Everything was delicious and beautiful, even the eating space. I brought my family after church, and we ordered everything we could. The fried fish, chicken was delicious. The yams were fresh, and delicious. The potato salad wasn't my favorite potato salad, but it was very tasty and we all loved the flavor. I guess it was just the texture. the mac and cheese was cheesy and old school delicious. The beans and rice was so good and nicely seasoned. The greens were bright green, and I didn't know what to expect and I was a bit afraid to taste them, but they were lovely. We all loved them with I believe a sprinkle of smoked turkey and garlic I think-- whatever it was, it was a big hit as the elders are still bringing them up. "Remember those greens?..." I don't know if the green beans were from a can, but they were delicious as well. The sweet potato pie, peach cobbler, banana pudding, were unbelievably perfect. The banana pudding is made from scratch and it is divine. That peach cobbler--perfect combo of delicious peaches and crust. The sweet potato pie, another friggin' hit. I think we didn't get the freshest German chocolate cake as it was a bit dry. But the icing was delicious. However, with everything else being perfect or close to it, I'm thinking it was just an older slice. I will order it again. The pomegranate fresh juices were delicious. My daughter complained because she had to pay with her own money and I believe they were over $5, but my in law told her that the same size are usually $10, so she was fine. If it were my money, she would not have complained. Outside of the restaurant is rough looking and it's hard to park, and it doesn't look nice, but when you enter, it's like you are in another world. Everything is so quaint and nicely decorated. And the service is wonderful. The young lady at the register and the one working in the back were very professional and very pleasant. So when I saw that someone from this restaurant complained against Kendrick Lamar video, I couldn't understand why it had to be done publicly since it brought so much pride and unity to the surrounding community. The same Black pride and feel goodness that emanated from that video shoot, with the Bloods and Crips coming together is the same that is radiated in this little restaurant. It wasn't just a place to eat--it was a space where our stories, recaps from the work week, and laughter came together to nourish our souls. Just like that moment of unity of the video shoot, this spot carries the essence of connection, culture, and belonging. So a private letter to the artist and an invitation for him and his crew to come over and taste the food would have been a game changer because once they tasted the food, everything would have been sold out. Then when I saw that someone was going after each bad reviewer, doing a tit for tat, and reporting social media accounts to get them removed was disappointing; there was a lost of respect. But after coming and tasting the food and seeing the hard work that goes into everything, I get it now. Someone is trying to preserve their good name and protect the livelihoods of the staff, especially those young people who are so patient and kind to the customers. And if you don't know that this is a little unassuming gem in a blighted area, you wouldn't know the care, love and consistency that goes into the work here. Somebody is taking their time, being conscious of quality and doing some magic in the back, behind that little curtain, and bringing life into an area that may have been or currently be viewed as a food desert. My family had such a wonderful time here, we will definitely be repeat customers. I can't wait to taste everything else on the menu.
