Almost Famous Chai Food Boutique - Review - Culver City - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Seemingly unrelated to our favorite Cameron Crowe film, Almost Famous is an all-day Indian fusion spot in Culver City with a menu that’s more straightforward than its name suggests. Brunch features staple dishes like brioche french toast, eggs benedicts, and fried chicken sandwiches, while the dinner menu gets more interesting with crab bhuna, pork vindaloo croquettes, and sausage kulchas." - Cathy Park

A group of six of us Had dinner together last night, and we ALL enjoyed our individual meals at this restaurant! Wow! The flavors were sooo Delicious!! I personally ordered the garlic scallops, the garlic and chive naan, and the lamb roast, and it was all amazing. My Friends ordered the lamb biryani, the beef short rib, the crab appetizer, and the shrimp and grits… Nobody was disappointed! And our waiter was so attentive; she got us anything we needed! 10/10 experience! Highly recommend

Wow! My husband and I visited yesterday and it was absolutely incredible. We are so happy to have this restaurant in the neighborhood! The food was FANTASTIC and the service/ambiance was excellent - we shared the crab buhna, fig papdi chaat, pea & paneer butter masala, and ghee roast lamb with more than enough for leftovers the next day. We can’t wait to come back and try the rest of the menu!

The crab bhuna a with a semi-sweet banana bun stole the show, really soft, balanced, unforgettable. The chorizo plate was small but mighty, and the chicken curry from large plate was so well cooked and perfect on flavor (creamy and not spicy). Dessert was outrageously rich and indulgent (an easy 10/10).

My wife and I had the signature Chai which was perfectly rich, aromatic, and comforting. The ambiance was romantic and made the whole experience feel personal. The food was outstanding: Beef Short Ribs Nihari full of depth and spice, Ghee Roast Lamb Karahi perfectly balanced with bold flavors, and the Awadhi Lamb Biryani with Boondi Raita was delicious. We ended with Carrot Halwa and Ice Cream, which were unique and flavorful. Overall, a fantastic experience with great food and great atmosphere!

We dined at Almost Famous in Culver City tonight with a group of seven and had such a wonderful experience. The candlelit dining room is warm and inviting, and the service was unbelievably kind and attentive from start to finish. We ordered most of the vegetarian menu and loved everything. Standouts were the brown butter paratha and the cauliflower appetizer, both truly delightful. The house black daal and butter paneer were rich, comforting, and beautifully balanced. Even the chai impressed, with a noticeable fennel note that made it feel like the perfect digestive at the end of the meal. We left completely stuffed, and the total came to about $40 per person including a 22% gratuity, which felt like great value. This is exactly the kind of thoughtful, locally owned restaurant I am happy to support and will absolutely return to.

We visited with friends both for dinner and breakfast, and every time it was a great experience. Breakfast was a highlight the Blueberry Pancakes are absolutely delicious, perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The chai latte is on another level, honestly incredible. For dinner, we tried the Saag Paneer, Fried Cauliflower and Beef Short Ribs everything was rich, flavorful. The service deserves a special mention classy, attentive, and warm. Our server, Misha was very charismatic, friendly, and made the whole even better. We’ll definitely be coming back and recommending this place to friends. A must-visit spot in LA😍

This restaurant is excellent. It’s a modern take on Indian cuisine. The short ribs, the scallops, the shrimp and grits are all outstanding. Everything has great flavor. The staff are extremely nice and it’s a beautiful inside since it’s so clean. I happen to meet the owner and he was extremely hospitable!

This place is incredible! This is our second time here and the food is top notch. Every single thing on the menu is absolutely delicious, and the staff is incredibly nice and attentive. Dishes we have had so far are the braised short rib main, lamb ghee main, sweet potato Papdi Chaat, and the Gobhi Bezule. And the naan is 🔥🔥🔥!!

Yelp
My husband and I stopped by on a Saturday evening and were instantly charmed by the warm, vibrant vibe. We decided to start with three appetizers: the Crab Bhuna with banana bun/poori, Kerala fried chicken, and fig chaat. All three sounded too good to pass up, and they lived up to their descriptions. The standout was hands down the Crab Bhuna, flavorful, and perfectly balanced by the sweet banana poori. The fig chaat was fresh, and the fried chicken had that great southern meets south India crunch, but we quickly realized that "small plates" here are Indian small, meaning quite generous! We paced ourselves and moved on to a lamb main course with dal and whole wheat roti, comforting, hearty, and deeply satisfying. Service was good and friendly. By then, we had no room left for dessert (even though the options sounded amazing), but that just gives us something to look forward to next time. Almost Famous truly delivers on inventive Indian flavors without losing the soul of the cuisine. We'll definitely be back, and next time, dessert is happening!

Yelp
Almost Famous was great: the food had a lot of flavor, the dishes were presented nicely, and the service was fantastic. Below are my thoughts on each dish ordered: - Gobhi Bezule (cauliflower): a bit too much breading - Crab Bhuna: the amount of sauce mixed in made it so I couldn't taste the crab as much as I had hoped to, but maybe this is what it's supposed to be like - Fried chicken: a bit too much breading and not crispy enough; the sauce was amazing - Awadhi Lamb Biryani: so, so good - Kulfi: the ice cream consistency was absolutely perfect, the flavor was there, and it wasn't too sweet One thing that kind of bothered me was the front door slamming shut. It slowly closes itself, but then loudly slams shut at the last second. This was pretty noticeable on the night I dined here and I assume it will be addressed. I look forward to dining here again! TIP: They are working on obtaining their liquor license and have no corkage fee for the time being - bring a bottle of wine!! They provide glasses and will open the bottle for you!

Yelp
I work nearby and came to pick food up for myself and a coworker. i was helped by Vajay, who was really nice and made the experience pleasant and fast as i had to order quickly to go and get back to work. the food was ready within 20 minutes. the presentation(to go) was great.. i just ate it super quick and so the pictures dont do it justice. im always skeptical out fusion spots and with this being Indian-American food i didnt know if one cuisine would be better than the other but i truly enjoy both and would highly recommend this place! Will be trying out their dinner menu next. p.s. i am also south asian so my review is coming from someone very familiar with the south asian/indian cuisine- therefore take my word for it! Bonus: they service halal chicken and lamb.

Yelp
Amazing food and service. Loved the sagpaneer and lamb. The kulfi was out of this world. Will be back.

Yelp
I stopped in for brunch at this self-serve gem, and wow--what an unexpected treat! The atmosphere was warm, inviting, and they're doing a cute subtle Christmas theme. Even though it's self-serve, the staff here is phenomenal. Everyone was genuinely friendly, attentive, and clearly proud of what they do. Special shoutout to the chef behind the French toast--easily the softest, fluffiest I've had in a long time. I still don't know what kind of syrup they used, but wow. It had this unique flavor that set the whole dish apart. Everything about the experience felt thoughtful and high-quality. If you're looking for a brunch spot that's both relaxed and seriously delicious, this place should be at the top of your list. I'm already planning my next visit! I rarely leave reviews but, well deserved 5 stars.

Yelp
I was so happy to see an Indian fusion cuisine open for brunch. Loved the choice of American and Indian options. Loved the vada pao. The benne dosa is not like a regular dosa. It's softer and the potato filling is yummy. Loved the chutney it's served with. A must try! Servers were very polite and even though the place is self service, they came during the meal to ask if the food was good and if we need anything. They have decent sitting area. Ample of seats.

Yelp
First time here, and pleasantly surprised by how flavorful each dish was! Each item had such unique flavors. Our favorite was the cauliflower small plate. The coconut flavor really came through. The crab dish was good, but the natural crab flavor was a bit over-powered by the strong spices. Altogether still enjoyable, and the banana buns it came with were delicious! The saag and lamb roast were excellent as well. Lamb was not gamey and was very tender. Looking forward to coming back to try other dishes and to the welcoming service. Ambiance is perfect for a date night.

Yelp
Almost Famous is terrific! They take familiar Indian flavors but repurpose them in ways I've never had. There were a huge number of dishes we wanted to try, but at the server's suggestion, we started with four small plates, which wound up being more than the two of us needed. The portion sizes are extremely generous ("small plates" is a misnomer...). We had the crab bhuna, fig papdi chaat, fried chicken, and pork vindaloo croquettes. Everything was very good, but my favorite was the croquette--great crispy bite with great flavor and the perfect amount of spice. The fig papdi chaat was also a standout with a complex flavor profile. Would love if this place did a tasting menu so we could try more bites; otherwise, we need to come with a big group to try more. Only suggestion is that they add a decaf chai option. We would have loved to try the chai but didn't want the caffeine at night.

Yelp
This is our second time here. The service top notch. The staff courteous as always. Food - fingerlicking good. If you like the real Indian food save going to any other restaurant and do yourself a favor and come here. You won't regret it! Wishing them the utmost success. Cheers to Vijay and team.

Yelp
Almost Famous is one of those restaurants that I think will be super famous 6 months from now with tables booking out weeks in advance. The food is extremely flavorful, creative and reflects the heart the chef put into the menu. The ambience is really nice and service to top notch!

Yelp
Loved it! Such a nice atmosphere and the food was delicious. I got the bene dose and also the yummy masala chai. They even had jaggery to sweeten the chai. Definitely recommend! The service was great too.

Yelp
It's hard to find good Indian food around LA like there is in SF/Fremont area. All food we had was great but their Kerala Fried Chicken and Crab Bhuna with banana buns were amazing. The classic saag though we felt could have had something more in it, not sure quite what missing but maybe a little more spice/herbs but by no means was it bad. The naan here was exceptional, tons of flavor and garlic! Will be back to try other dishes.

Yelp
Love the new addition to the neighborhood. Popped in for a late dinner last night and had a great experience. The service was quick and attentive. More importantly, the food was awesome! The menu is a little extensive so another visit is definitely in order. I didn't see a drinks menu so they might be working on their license but definitely worth it!

Yelp
Cute gem in the neighborhood. Love the fusion of American and Indian food. Went for brunch this morning and the food was very good, the biscuits and gravy were really good and the benne dosa was very flavorful. Chai was on point... The side of eggs was surprisingly expensive for 2 eggs and the chai was also priced higher than expected. Overall, tasty dishes and a nice vibe. Definitely coming back again for dinner. I recommended the manager to checkout the Dishoo restaurant music, old Bollywood style music would be jazzy...

Yelp
We were walking to another breakfast place and decided to pivot and try this place out. Super good, little pricey, but it was worth it. We had the pancakes and the American breakfast and we both ate everything. Looking forward to coming back and trying their dinner menu.

Yelp
Incredibly delicious. The food is obviously made with love, featuring deep flavors and creativity. I was so disappointed to get full as I didn't want to stop.

Anupama K.

Yelp
No more being greeted with jarring red yellow and orange artificially colored rice that gets dished out in almost all Indian fares. Flavored and fragrant rice interspersed with succulent pieces of lamb. This place is an absolute must try. We walked in to a softly opened restaurant. We ordered crab sukka with Mangalore buns (or banana buns), lamb karahi, awadhi biryani and the house dal (another must try)

Yelp
This Indian American restaurant has a cool modern vibe and is one of the few Indian restaurants around that opens early. We tried the vada pav, benne dosa and chai. The food was very high quality and well spiced. The sambar was especially delicious. Both the owner and the server were welcoming and attentive, making the experience even better.

Yelp
Friends and I came to this delightful new "Food Boutique" in Culver City. We found it on Yelp and it certainly lives up to it's 5 star reviews! The menu is varied, interesting & creative. We shared a variety of small plates because we wanted to try several things on the menu, loved the cauliflower & the crab starters. The service was wonderful: very attentive and friendly, offering suggestions from the menu. I highly recommend this for the ambience, the service, and best of all: the delicious food selections.

Nicole B.

Yelp
Everything we had was delicious, super flavorful and authentic! Ambience was elegant and chill. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable, helping with my food allergies easily. This is my new favorite neighborhood spot and I plan to work my way through the entire menu.

Junaid K.

Yelp
Finally a new A+ Indian restaurant! Such a creative, healthy, delicious menu made with conscious intention. Every single thing we've had here was incredible! The cauliflower appetizer is a MUST try! All the curries we've had we loved. The naan is fresh, fluffy and yummy. The dosa is SO good - a good as south India! Kulfi dessert is fantastic. They even make their own ghee in house! The staff, owner and server are very kind! Enjoyed talking to Vijay the manager, you can tell he really cares about customers being happy at the restaurant! Vibes are warm and the lighting is inviting. This place just feels like a great place together with friends. The ambience is simply perfect for almost any occasion! Parking was easy too. Definitely will be back! I've introduced three friends to this restaurant, and they all loved it!

Yelp
Was so excited to have an authentic Indian restaurant in the neighborhood, and it exceeded all expectations. We went for brunch and had the dosa, vada pao, banana foster pancakes and chai. All were perfectly executed. The chutney and sambar was especially delicious with the dosa, and all the sauces, spices and flavors were well balanced on the vada. The chai had a strong ginger flavor which I loved and the pancakes were fluffy with a delicious caramel sauce and not too sweet. Definitely excited to come back and try more on the menu!

Killian J.

Yelp
Loved this new spot in Culver! They did a really nice just setting up the restaurant interior. Love the open kitchen and tables working around the center area. The staff were incredibly nice and attentive and the food was fire. We got two small plates, the crab and date ones, and two large plates, the pea and paneer and the roasted lamb. All were delicious! Will definitely be coming back. Also, great portions and the leftovers made a yummy breakfast the next day.

Will H.

Yelp
Must-try Indian food in Culver City. The fig papdi chaat is one of the most interesting and flavorful side dishes I've had. The lamb was extremely tender in the ghee roast. Oh, and the chai is delightful!

Debbie H.

Yelp
Everything was excellent!! My daughter and I went for Brunch and it was our first time. The service was fantastic, food amazing. We spoke to AJ he was very professional and asked how we liked our dishes. We will be back to try the Dinner menu !!
