My son and I stayed here for two nights. The positives....the hotel is in a good Magnificent Mile location just two blocks east of Michigan Ave. There are lots of restaurants and shopping venues nearby. Water Tower, John Hancock, and Navy Pier are all less than 15 minute walks away.
Our rundown, if you want an honest opinion. Prior to arriving we checked reviews and pictures and thought the hotel looked nice and modern. The reviews were mostly good. It is part of the Marriott family, so we expected it to be fine. Check in was quick and simple. The guy that checked us in was nice enough. The lobby has a bar, lots of seating, a pool table, some board games, and a small area to buy snacks and drinks.
We got to our room which looked okay. It's very minimal and modern. There are bare concrete ceilings and accent walls. The beds were not your typical Marriott beds and there is no way these are the Marriott pillows. The pillows were flat and stayed that way. My bedding smelled a little weird. My son went to the bathroom and said, "Uh, this is weird. There's no lock and the door doesn't close." What? So, the bathroom doors slide. They are not pocket doors, but more like barn doors. They slide on a track only at the top and none at the bottom. This means that you can hear everything. So, if any of you are planning a romantic get away, you will hear every bathroom sound your partner makes, hopefully, you've been together a long time. Haha.
The first night of our stay I had a difficult time sleeping because the bed wasn't very comfortable and the pillows were so bad. The HVAC was really loud when it went off and on. The very worst thing was the horrible smoke detector. It had a green light that flashed, okay, I can live with that, but the bright white light that also flashed every 10 seconds was unbearable. At one point, about 3 in the morning, my son jumped out of bed, loudly said mom (he thought I was sleeping, but I wasn't), and said something's wrong there's a light flashing. I told him it was happening all night and wasn't the alarm going off. I thought maybe it was a battery dying or defective. The next morning, I told the front desk that there was a bright white light flashing on our smoke detector all night and I think it had something wrong with it. Nope. That's how they are.
That same morning we decided to sleep in and then head out later in the day. We left around 11AM and I asked the front desk if they could have our room cleaned as we would be out all day. Also, if they could have maintenance look at our deadbolt that didn't work. They said they would have both done while we were out. We got back around 7:30PM and our deadbolt still didn't work and our room was not cleaned. I called the front desk and stated that our room had never been cleaned and asked if we could just get some clean towels. I think the guy's name was Kevin said they would be delivered right away. An hour later I called down again and another girl apologized and said she would bring them up herself. She brought them up and gave us 3 bottles of water and 3 ($15) vouchers for the food area. That was nice.
They did have a guy in the lobby playing live music which was nice, except there was no where to sit. That's how crowded the lobby was. It was like this even before the live music. My son said it was a really odd mix of people in the hotel like the tatooine bar. We were surprised at how many people were always hanging out in the lobby. Kids, adults, people drinking, people working on their laptops, kids lying on couches, people with their dogs.
Luckily, the second night I was able to sleep since I hadn't the first night. The people across the hall were up cackling and talking loudly until 5AM. Yup, 5AM. It was annoying. I think there may be an issue with this being used for parties because I saw a little post it on the keyboard of one of the computers at the front desk that said "PARTY POLICY". I was too tired to call down and complain about the people across the hall. And, frankly, I was tired of asking for things that were not going to be taken care of.
I sound like a total crabby grumbler, but this was just not a great hotel. The pool was always packed with people because it is pretty small and there isn't a hot tub. The workout room was pretty nice.
So, if you don't mind a flashing light all night in your room, don't mind hearing guests in neighboring rooms all night, don't mind hearing your room mates bathroom sounds, and don't care if your room gets cleaned, this is the hotel for you. I hope this was just a case of Murphy's Law for us, but I am going to guess not.
