Hawaiian plate lunches, loco moco, spam musubi & curry

"This long-time fast-casual Hawaiian restaurant serves the city’s best plate lunch, down to the white disposable containers. Spam musubi and marinated beef short rib make for great meals, along with the customary macaroni salad and a scoop of white rice." - Ashok Selvam
"Chicago’s original Hawaiian plate lunch restaurant Aloha Eats is a taste of paradise. For many Chicagoans, it was their first encounter with a Spam musubi, and for homesick islanders, an important reminder of Hawai’i. Recently celebrating 20 years, a lot of stories and history have been made here, and the family continues to pile the mac salad and kalua pork high." - Alex Jewell

"A neighborhood standby of nearly two decades known for hearty portions of island favorites — notably loco moco, Spam musubi, and curry chicken katsu — that is encouraging supporters to donate to multiple Maui relief organizations (including Maui Mutual Aid, Maui Strong Fund, Maui United Way, and the Maui Humane Society) and has shared a detailed spreadsheet to help direct donations to local families." - Naomi Waxman
"A Lincoln Park mainstay invited to participate in the Stock Monday supper series (scheduled for June 26), representing established local restaurants collaborating with the publication to put chefs and their food directly in front of curious diners as part of a wider effort to spotlight Midwestern foodmakers." - Jessi Roti
"For some restaurants, Styrofoam is routine. Aloha Eats in Lincoln Park serves traditional Hawaiian plate lunches in its customary white containers. Isabel Lee, whose father opened the restaurant in 2005, said that she coincidentally talked with a supplier last week with hopes of finding an environmentally friendly replacement. Lee didn’t know about the proposed ordinance. Recycled plastic should cost just as much as the old Styrofoam, she said. According to media reports, if passed, the city would keep a list of approved suppliers of environmentally friendly containers." - Ashok Selvam
