Square Stopped Working Last Week. The Outage Lost Portland Restaurant Owners Thousands of Dollars. | Eater Portland

"Another of the businesses Nguyen helps run, bistro Alouette suffered the same loss—three-fourths of Thursday transactions—leading Nguyen to post on Instagram that the businesses are 'fucking devastated' and struggling to cover bills." - Janey Wong

A Charming Breakfast Spot with Beautiful Brioche French Toast I had breakfast at Alouette Bistro, located on the ground floor of the Executive Hotel Le Soleil. The interior has a wonderful, sophisticated, and calm atmosphere that makes it a comfortable spot for both families and solo diners alike. The female staff member who served me was incredibly warm and welcoming. I ordered the Cappuccino and the Brioche French Toast with fruit. The French Toast was impressive—a thick, golden slice of brioche beautifully adorned with fresh berries and a generous topping of cream. It was as delicious as it looked, with a lovely balance of textures. As for the cappuccino, the flavor was good, though I found the foam to be a bit less creamy/velvety than what I'm used to. Overall, it was a very pleasant start to the day. I would definitely recommend it for the great service and the lovely ambiance!

This was my fourth visit to Alouette Bistro, and it reminded me exactly why it’s become one of my favourite spots. The staff are always so warm, welcoming, and genuinely attentive. On my very first visit, they surprised me with three cocktails on the house, which honestly set the tone for how thoughtful their service is. This time, they gifted me a complimentary cocktail again, and it made the experience feel just as special as the first time. I tried the ratatouille and the baked brie, and both were amazing—the ratatouille was cozy and flavourful, and the baked brie was creamy, rich, and perfectly balanced. From the food to the atmosphere to the consistently incredible staff, Alouette always makes me feel taken care of. It’s the kind of place you keep coming back to.

Had such an amazing time at alouette bistro with my friends. Each dish was delicious and served in a very timely manner. So much attention to detail throughout service and our waiter was very helpful throughout the menu. We ordered the beef tartare and our server assistant Brandon did such an amazing job at presenting each dish and making sure we had everything we needed. Both entertaining to watch and delicious to eat. All servers and server assistants this night were just delightful, kind, and knowledgeable. Will definitely be coming back!

This restaurant has been on my saved list for quite a while, and I was so excited to finally try it. I visited today with my boyfriend and his relatives, which made the experience even more special. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere felt welcoming and comfortable. The space felt cozy but not cramped. It was a great setting for a group meal. We ordered a variety of dishes to share. Sharing made the experience more fun. It also allowed us to try many items on the menu. The food came out beautifully presented. Everything looked very appetizing. The flavors did not disappoint. Every dish tasted thoughtfully prepared. The quality of the ingredients really stood out. For the price, the value was honestly very good. The portions were generous. We ordered a lot of food. We ended up with more than enough for everyone. No one left hungry. In fact, we were very full. My favorites were the escargot. The escargot was rich and comforting. It was well seasoned. The texture was perfect. I also really loved the ratatouille. The ratatouille tasted fresh and balanced. The vegetables were cooked just right. The flavors felt authentic and hearty. The duck was another standout for me. The duck was tender. It was flavorful. It felt indulgent but not heavy. Even the dishes that weren’t my personal favorites were still very delicious. Everything we tried was enjoyable. There wasn’t a single dish that felt disappointing. The menu overall felt well thought out. It was great for sharing. It’s perfect for group dining. The pacing of the food was also good. We didn’t feel rushed. We had time to enjoy each dish. The experience felt relaxed. Our server, Betty—or possibly Betti, and I apologize if I mispronounced her name—was absolutely wonderful. She was incredibly attentive. She checked in on us at the right moments. She explained each dish clearly. Her explanations made the food more enjoyable. She answered our questions patiently. She was friendly without being overbearing. Her service really elevated the entire meal. You could tell she cared about the guests’ experience. She made us feel well taken care of. Dining feels so much better with good service. She truly made our visit memorable. The combination of great food and excellent service made the experience stand out. Everyone at the table enjoyed themselves. My boyfriend and his relatives were all very happy. It felt like a place suitable for both special occasions and casual gatherings. The restaurant has a warm and inviting vibe. It feels like somewhere you can return to again and again. I can easily see this becoming a go-to spot. I would happily come back to try more dishes. There are still many items on the menu I’m curious about. This place exceeded my expectations. I’m glad I finally crossed it off my saved list. The quality matched the anticipation. It lived up to the hype I had built in my head. French food can sometimes feel intimidating, but this place made it approachable. The flavors were comforting. The experience felt satisfying. Everything came together nicely. From the food to the service, it was a great meal. I would recommend this restaurant to friends. I would also recommend it to family. It’s a great option if you’re craving French cuisine. It’s especially good if you enjoy sharing dishes. If you’re looking for good French food, this is a place worth trying. We will definitely be back!

Google
One of the best French bistros we've been. Impeccable service, amazing food - I personally fell in love with the tartare made directly at our table in front of us. And this came with great ambiance and a little touch to highlight our anniversary.

Google
Unfortunately, my phone died so I couldn’t capture the beautiful dishes but they were just as stunning as the interior. The service was outstanding with friendly, attentive staff who really made an effort to ensure everything was perfect. The manager even checked in at every table, adding a personal touch. I'll definitely be back for more escargots!

Google
What a beautiful restaurant! Great date night spot. The service was fantastic. We came during happy hour before the dinner rush. We ordered one of everything from the happy hour menu along with their famous burger. All the happy hour appies were your standard French, buttery, cheesy and carby classics. The burger was very tasty, it has a french onion soup vibe to it. Our table's favourite was probably the baked brie. Will definitely try a salad and a classic French entree next time.

Google
Alouette is hands down one of my favorite restaurants in the city, especially in the summer. Their patio is absolutely beautiful and truly feels like a little escape to France right in the heart of Vancouver. The service is always incredible. Guillaume was our server this time and he was fantastic, attentive, kind, and knowledgeable. I’ve been here many times, I know some of the team by name (Jose is also amazing). Their wine selection is thoughtfully curated, and I can’t recommend their brunch and happy hour enough. A perfect spot for long lunches, early dinners, or just enjoying the sunshine with a glass of wine.

Yelp
We had a beautiful evening at Aloutte Bistro. We'd been out earlier in the day so we shared some bread and muscles and then a seafood pasta. The muscles were fresh and the broth they were cooked in was super flavorful and aromatic. The seafood pasta was also really good. All of the seafood was fresh and the pasta was cooked nicely. The service and ambiance were also exceptional. I loved the table settings and the whole vibe in general. If you'd like a nice evening out that's still accessible and affordable with quality food, this is definitely a good option.

Yelp
I had been to this restaurant for brunch and happy hour and this was my first time visiting here for dinner. Service and ambience are awesome as usual. our server was very attentive and welcoming I ordered the Vol-au-vent and it was my first time ordering this dish. The sauce with mushroom was delicious but like classic french cuisine, the sauce was rich. But the frisee salad did a great job of balancing the richness of the sauce. Portion was generous and i was not able to finish my plate and had to pack it to go. I added the chicken on the side as protein. Nicely grilled without drying the meat. My only feedback for the dish was the amount of sauce on the puff pastry. I find a bit too much and pastry started to become slightly soggy half way through the meal. My friend ordered beef tartare and it was a table side service too which was interesting to actually see the assembly of the plate

Yelp
It was my birthday, and we were craving some French food, so we decided to try Alouette Bistro. We started with the Escargot, and it was absolutely delicious! Then we had the Bouillabaisse and Duck Cassoulet -- both were full of flavor and perfectly cooked. For dessert, we ordered our favorite treat, Crème Brulée, which was the perfect way to finish the meal. The only small downside was the seating. We booked a couple of days in advance but were given a fairly standard table. Later, we noticed there's an upstairs area that's quieter and cozier -- we thought it was just for larger groups, but some couples were seated there too. I totally understand that reservations don't always guarantee the best table, but since it was a birthday celebration, a little personal touch would've made it extra special. Food: 5/5 | Service: 5/5 | Atmosphere: 4/5

Christina L.

Yelp
I had my birthday dinner here (table of 6), and we had a great time! Everyone enjoyed her food, which says a lot as we are foodies. I loved my sablefish dish. The beef tartar was done at the table and we enjoyed watching the staff put it all together while introducing every ingredient that went into it. It was delicious! We felt the complimentary birthday champagne at the end was such a nice gesture from the restaurant, and it added to our celebratory vibes. The restaurant decor is beautiful and elegant. Chairs are comfortable, too. Can't wait to eat there again (we've already been for brunch and happy hour, both were great!)

Yelp
This spot is so lovely and the ambiance harkens to Art Deco Paris. The bar is so ornate it was hard not to order a Kir Royale. Service was hit and miss as we ordered a charcuterie board for two. When asked the types of cheese on the plate the waiter made it up because none were correct. Then he said the kitchen couldn't tell him. (what?) When the hostess came by to check on us I told her what happened and she found out the types of cheese from the kitchen. We actually never saw our waiter again. (I'm guessing he was too lazy to ask). I loved the atmosphere and will give them another chance, probably for dinner instead of brunch.

Yelp
Came for breakfast one morning and it was great! We had no wait, but we were quite early in the morning. The server was very friendly! Most of us had the eggs benedict, which was served on a croissant, and loved it. The breakfast potatoes were cooked perfectly. There were a lot of other great menu options so I would definitely return for breakfast. The interior was beautiful and I wish I could have wandered upstairs to see more of it. It was a cute little spot and I highly recommend.

Yelp
Great place to come for happy hour. The inside of the restaurant gives you that old style European feel. The service here is top-notch. Our server came and checked on us regularly, and we never had to flag any one down. The food reminds me of an upscale French Bistro. My wife and I were already full from lunch, but we wanted to enjoy some wine and cocktails for happy hour. Happy hour pricing made everything very affordable. The shrimp cocktails were medium sized, tasted fresh and sweet. The mussels were plump and delicious. I loved the escargot. I mopped up all the sauce with the bread. I would come back again to enjoy a few glasses of wine during happy hour.
google avatar

Michealea F.

Yelp
I got the escargot during happy hour and ratatouille. The escargot is great with the bread. Service is excellent and they made sure my glass is never empty. The ratatouille lacks is a bit tangy for me, but it has a nice savory taste to it. It lacks unity overall.

Yelp
Nice French restaurant. Small siting area. Very cozy. Great breakfast. Ambiance is rustic and old traditional. The service is fast. Enjoyed dining here. Love to come back.

Yelp
Alouette Bistro is absolutely phenomenal. After a long morning of traveling, we landed in Vancouver famished, decided on having a late lunch and found Alouette. We arrived looking a mess with our carryons and backpacks but we were welcomed and seated promptly inside this gorgeous establishment. It was around 2pm and the restaurant was clearing out. The only negative is that the food took longer to be prepared than what we are accustomed to, but it was well worth the wait. We ordered escargot, ratatouille, truffle pasta and seared halibut. Admittedly, this was my first time trying escargot, the butter and herb flavors really shined especially paired with the baguette. However, I had trouble getting passed the fact that I was eating snails. I didn't try the ratatouille but was told it was delicious. On to the halibut, it was seared to perfection! The mashed potatoes were so creamy and the anchovy vierge brought the entire dish together. The star of the show was the truffle pasta. This was honestly the best pasta I've had, ever. It was so creamy with the most amazing cheese pulls and combined with the flavor of the truffle was truly exceptional. I can't wait to be back in Vancouver and enjoying Alouette Bistro again!

Yelp
This restaurant is located on Hornsby St, in the Hotel Le Soleil. It's a very beautiful space with high ceilings, wood flooring, and a very interesting light fixture over the center of the space. I got there just after it opened so it was empty. Chloe was my server. I started with a double Monkey 47 gin and tonic ($28.50CAD), and ordered Bone Marrow ($24), and Duck Cassoulet with foie gras ($59). Along the way, I had another Monkey 47 G&T and finished with an Americano ($6). The bone marrow came with four pieces of toasted baguette, and some Shimeji mushrooms and pickled onion. It was so unctuous and delicious! The cassoulet was rich, with confit duck, sausage, lardon, and some vegetables. The foie gras add-on ($20) took the dish over the top. This was a fabulous first meal ($156.13CAD + tip) in Vancouver ... I loved everything!

Yelp
Every time - And I mean EVERY TIME I plan a trip to Vancouver, I make sure I include Alouette in my itinerary. I make reservations weeks before I get there. The Lamb is always cooked to perfection; So delicious! It's my go to....and absolute favorite dish to get. I highly recommend this restaurant...and I can't wait to plan my next trip.

Yelp
Had a lovely dine out dinner at alouette with a friend! The restaurant itself is very beautiful, great ambiance and attentive service. Water was always refilled and food arrived promptly. Loved the cocktails - very beautiful and tasty. Empress club was gorgeous to look at and the negroni was super smooth. Food was tasty. My favorite was the beef tartar appetizer and the two entrees. The salad was just mediocre - not much flavor. The beef entree was great - meat was so tender. The confit duck leg was equally delicious - nice and crispy. Chocolate mousse was pretty but a tad sweet. We got a double espresso to balance the sweetness. Overall a great meal!

Yelp
I came here for happy hour, two days in a row. And I highly recommend it. I had the duck poutine fries which were fantastic. And the next day I had the baked brie which came in a cast iron skillet with candied bacon and thin slices of potato. I love this place. The food is great, the restaurant is beautiful and the service is wonderful. I highly recommend giving it a try.

Yelp
Spent my birthday dinner here. For me, this is the most private and intimate dinner I've experienced. Food is so good and the customer service is splendid. Look for Paul. I highly recommend this restaurant if you're in Vancouver.

Yelp
Tucked away inside a hotel, this charming French restaurant is a hidden gem that's absolutely worth seeking out. The atmosphere is cozy and intimate, perfect for a relaxed dining experience. I had the steak and bone marrow, and it was outstanding. The steak was cooked to perfection--tender, flavorful, and beautifully seared--while the bone marrow added a rich, indulgent touch that really elevated the dish. Every bite felt like a true indulgence. Sevice was top notch as well, come check it out.

Yelp
I have nothing but amazing things to say about this bistro! While visiting Vancouver, I found this bistro was a block and a half away from my hotel so decided to get some take out! The service is incredibly friendly and it's a cute little space! I have been here for three days thus far and have picked up take out all three days! Their beef tartare is absolutely yummy! I also LOVE the sear foie gras! It's melt in your mouth delicious! Their prices are very reasonable and I will be returning to dine in so I can try other items on the menu! If you're downtown Vancouver, definitely check this spot out! A+++

Yelp
What a delightful meal we had today! Classic decor, friendly attentive service from the entire staff, spot on recommendations from our server Wanita, and mouthwatering flavorful shrimp provencal appetizer, Dover sole main course, expertly de-boned tableside, and expansive wine menu. A perfect exclamation mark on a late summer day.
google avatar

Kev M.

Yelp
Such a beautiful establishment located in a hotel where if you stay there it includes breakfast at this fancy and delicious restaurant. Service was great but our waters could have been filled more often. I had the smoked salmon toast and it was really more of a salad with a sourdough base. My partner had the classic breakfast and kid had the continental breakfast. Everyone was happy.
google avatar

Chris Q.

Yelp
Excellent French food thoughtfully prepared. My lunch of coq au vin was so good I put my phone away so I could savor every bite without distraction. The suggested wine pairing was perfect. Breakfast is also not to be missed. For something light I had yogurt and granola which was a harmonious balance of flavors and textures, sweetened with just enough but not too much honey. If you like your coffee strong go for espresso instead of the pot. I'm looking forward to the French toast tomorrow.

Yelp
Came to Alouette Bistro for Happy Hour with a colleague. Like the last time I came, decor was fabulous with the slightly darken restaurant vibes but with great lighting. Service is excellent - our waters were constantly refilled and we were consistently checked up on by our fabulous server. She was so personable and professional! Happy Hour dishes are all $12 and the portions of them were large for the price point. We ordered the Moules et Frites, Shrimp Provencal, and Duck Poutine. My friend also ordered the Happy Hour cocktail for $8 and they actually had some mocktails available and I ordered the Mulberry Fizz ($15). The drinks were superb and I really enjoyed the Mulberry Fizz. It was a large size and included a generous wedge of fresh grapefruit that really enhanced the drink. So fruity and refreshing! Moules et Frites were yummy, served with skinny fries and the server provided ketchup on the side. Mussel meats were tiny but generous dish portion. My favourite dish of the night was the Shrimp Provencal. The buttery white wine, large shrimp cooked to perfection, and accompanying slices of bread were to die for. Highly recommend! Duck poutine also generous in size and portion of Duck meat included. However, like with most Duck poutines, it was quite salty so I could only eat so much of it. My friend and I commented what a great Happy Hour place this is and also a great date spot. It was pretty busy for a Wednesday Happy Hour so glad to see Alouette doing well as it is well deserved.
google avatar

Milly D.

Yelp
Nice service and fancy place. Great for a date. Could be less noisy as these places always are. My problem is with the food. I've never had less delicious mussels for instance. The lack of seasoning was significant. All the food we ordered was under seasoned and underwhelming. The halibut and the mussels. The drink was just ok.
google avatar

Steve A.

Yelp
This is a lovely space with a dramatic ceiling and a beautiful bar. At brunch, the menu included typical brunch fair and a few classic French bistro dishes. He had "It's called Brunch", which was a selection of breads, smoked salmon, and cooked ahi tuna. It was all good, nothing spectacular. Service was pleasant. The kitchen was leisurely.
google avatar

Cyn L.

Yelp
We had dinner here the other night and enjoyed everything from service to food. I booked a reservation thru Open Table and they were able to accommodate us earlier. The hostess was very kind and accommodating when I called. My husband had the rack of lamb and said it was the best he's ever had. I had a crab pasta and it was delicious. Others in our party also enjoyed their meal. We had a chocolate bar dessert which I'm still thinking about. It was decadent and came with boysenberry sorbet. Service was great and prices were fair considering the quality of our meal and the beautiful ambiance of the restaurant. Definitely recommend this French restaurant!

Yelp
Lovely place and amazing food. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Will go back again.

Yelp
Super delayed birthday celebration due to the snow but finally got to try this French restaurant in downtown! The lamb rack was so so so so so good. I am so glad I got that! Between the onion tart and the vol-au-vent, I like the latter more. The puff pastry with the various vegetables and mascarpone was a great combination. I am looking forward to trying le burger next time! Huge portions and it looked so delicious. Service was professional and timely. It was a cozy and comfortable place!

Yelp
This was the last dinner of our mini vacation, and it was wonderful! Our server was very helpful with talking to the kitchen about our vegan options. We could have the chickpea fries, the ratatouille, and the vegetables du jour, so we ordered all three! They gave us a tomato sauce for our chickpea fries since we couldn't have the aioli. Everything was really good. The chickpea fries and ratatouille needed a touch of salt, but it wasn't a dealbreaker. The atmosphere was very classy, and I loved the decor. It was certainly a fine dining experience without being too stuffy. It was also very affordable! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant, but there were a few misses for us.... Entered the restaurant at lunch just after 11 am...they advertise a burger with a beer or wine for 20 dollars. What they fail to do is let you know what type of burger...today's selection was a salmon burger...yea..no thanks. Hub decided after hearing the review from me about this place to order the steak frites for 40 dollars...good price. So we both ordered that. Waitress asked if we wanted bread..we were not sure so we said yea ok...she did not say the bread was an up charge of 6 dollars...I don't think we needed it, however it was super delicious...it would have been nice to know there was an up charge. Got our steaks, and although they looked delicious, they were overcooked.. my medium rare was a medium plus and hubs medium was a medium well...usually this is not a game changer, but the meat quality was not great. They say this is tenderloin so do not expect a filet...other reviews list "filet" and it is definitely not near that quality. The saving grace was the peppercorn sauce..it was magnificent and the bernaise is probably the best and most fresh tasting I have ever had...sadly you don't want sauces to have to cover an expensive piece of meat. Next time I will choose elsewhere for this price point .

Gary D.

Yelp
The wine was warm, the food over cooked, service sporadic. I had steak and frites - a traditional French dish. French fries were small pieces, steak overcooked. Just not a good experience for the price they wanted.

Laura H.

Yelp
Preface: I hope for a chance to try them one more time. The greeter told us that our reserved two-top was in the back of the dining room, behind a pillar, and suggested that we might like to wait for a table that was about to be vacated. Not her fault that the people stayed and stayed. We were finally offered a table next to the open kitchen, not normally used for guests, I imagine. There was no tablecloth and there were stacks of plates by our heads. My cassoulet arrived warm, not hot. It's on me for not sending it back, but we'd already spent so much time waiting for the table. The cassoulet was cold before I finished. My husband didn't think that the seared tuna variety on his Niçoise salad was a good choice. I did have a delicious cocktail that included beautiful blackberries. This would normally be my kind of restaurant. Maybe we'll have a chance to try them again some day.

Yelp
French Onion Soup 4 caramelized onions, beef broth, gruyère cheese, crouton, cheesy, flavorful Escargot 4 shallots / onions, garlic, herbs, butter, bread crumbs, baguette / bread slices, super garlicky, medium flavorful Truffle Pasta & Cheese 4 ear shaped pasta, rich truffle aroma, super cheesy, flavorful Seared Foie Gras 3 rich, no flavor Duck Cassoulet 5 confit duck leg, crispy skin, tender, juicy, lardon, sausage, cannellini bean, carrots, celeriac, tomato, onions, flavorful
google avatar

Anna L.

Yelp
Just ok. The interior looks nice and fancy. Service was great. Although, the server said they had an espresso martini to die for, it turned out to be a watered down cocktail. Most dishes lacked salt, and flavor in general. Escargots were very bland. Same for the pasta, greasy, which is fine if it tastes good, but it didn't. The best was the tomato tart, which we took as a side. The duck cassoulet was alright, same for the mussels. But nothing to rave about. It is a nice venue, and service was good.

Yelp
Most everything was delicious - we did a casual walk in for a late dinner. Our server was very nice and attentive. We ordered the steak frites- flavor good but a little tough- pasta was delicious , salad was yum! And burger was on point. A little pricey, we are worth it.

Yelp
Greatest experience in have had in the longest time! Already planning another trip to Vancouver! They were very accommdati.g to my celiac disease. I had rack of lamb and creme Brule! Service was incredible! The ambiance was beautiful. I could not have asked for a better experience.

Yelp
Loved everything about this spot! Uber sexy interior, amazing staff, over the top food, and atmosphere that made you linger in awe. While I'm excited to visit Vancouver again to try more amazing foodie stops, I am excited to visit here again! I'm salivating just thinking about it!

Yelp
Dine out menu: Beef Tartare Sablefish Croquette Beet Salad Cassoulet Bourguignon Pate au Fratinee Chocolate Delice Beef Tartare The seasoning of the beef itself was done nicely but the baguette really threw off the whole dish. The bread was kind of tough and did not pair well with the beef. I think if they used a softer bread or maybe something crunchy for a different texture it would be a lot better. I liked the crispy cheese paired with the beef though! But aside from the bread, I would not say this is the best beef tartare I've had. I would recommend you try it if you've never had it before, but maybe somewhere else. 3/5 Sablefish Croquette The fish was soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. It really fell apart in your mouth because of how soft it is. I enjoyed it paired with the sauce and the pickled onions and mushrooms as well. 3/5 Beet Salad I enjoyed this one the most because of how unique it was. I also liked how the beet was done. They used golden beets which were cooked until soft and almost candied in a way. The texture was pleasant and the sauce went well with everything too. It was kind of something I couldn't stop eating because of the flavour combinations. Don't forget about the goat cheese sprinkled on top for extra flavour! 5/5 Cassoulet The duck was cooked beautifully! Crispy skin and meat that fell off the bone. I enjoyed the bed of beans and other things that the duck was laid on. Take a spoonful of the beans and don't forget the lardon (a type of fatty bacon) and eat it together. However, I did get a little tired of eating beans after a while tho... 4/5 Bourguignon The beef was the star of the dish, which it should be! the beef was so so soft and cooked delicately. I am honestly not too sure about the other elements of this dish because the beef really stole the show and is the only thing I remember. 5/5 for the beef Pate au Gratinee If you are a fan of truffles you will like this dish. I am personally not too keen on truffles but found this dish still pleasant to eat. I enjoyed the other mushrooms in the dish and the broiled crispy cheese on top. It was a creamy pasta but didn't feel heavy for me. 3.5/5 Chocolate Delice The popcorn was not too special, but the cake was really good. I enjoyed the crispy bottom for extra texture and both chocolate and berry sauces went well with the dish. Taking a bite of the mint with the cake was also very refreshing and gave the cake a new profile. 5/5 Overall: It was a nice dine out experience and I think since I booked a reservation, we got to sit on the top floor. I think it was quieter compared to the bottom but I also enjoyed the layout of the bottom so I don't think I would have minded either way. However, my final verdict with consideration of the cost and food itself is 3/5. I think it is a fancy and good restaurant but just not to my taste. Ps. bonus for playing the black and white film Rebecca on the TVs by the bar

Yelp
Just delicious. I had the Eggs Benedict amd it was awesome. My wife had the sourdough toast with smoked salmon and locks but it also had arugula, olives and tomatoes. It was delicious as well. Service was amazing too.

Not generally a french brunch guy, but we were in the area and looking for some brunch and the menu here looked good! Tired the eggs benedict and vol-au-vent Eggs benedict was great! Eggs cooked just right with a very deep orange yolk that spilled over the croissant base when cut in half. Potatoes were roasted just right without a lot of char and seasoned generously w salt. Overall, it's what you'd expect for an eggs benedict with a croissant base from a french spot! Vol-Au-Vent was something new I tried and was amazing. Definitely enjoyed this a ton. The only description I can think of is an onion/mushroom creamy sauce/gravy poured over puff pastry. The balance of texture and richness was balanced w some acidity in the herb salad on the side. Definitely would recommend and get this again!

Yelp
Excellent French bistro in downtown Vancouver. The food was oh so delicious. Every course was beautifully plated with bold flavors. Good portions too. Paul was a wonderful server, very attentive with great recommendations. He knew the menu well and could easily accommodate my gluten free requests. Many items on the menu are either gluten free as is or can be slightly modified. They even brought out GF bread with the escargot for me (and left off the breadcrumbs, of course). Several vegetarian items (maybe vegan too). The staff was so good at refilling our water glasses and being available for everything right away. Stellar service all around. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Stopped by for happy hour after we checked into the hotel. We had the baked brie , which was fantastic! Drinks were great, service was even better. The bartenders were so easy to talk to, and made us feel comfortable. Batu and Conal are fantastic :)

Yelp
I don't know how Alouette Bistro only has 4.3 stars. From when my family arrived to when we left the service was exceptional. The food was some of the best french food we've had outside of France. We ordered almost one of everything from the happy hour menu. Not one dish disappointed us. They were all delicious. Portion sizes were big enough that 5 of us could eat a good portion of each dish. For our main dishes we got the halibut, Bouillabaisse, burger, and seafood taglierini. AMAZING. The halibut was tender. The bouillabaisse was so flavourful. The taglierini was cooked perfectly. And the burger was juicy and perfect. We also had the beef tartare which was plated table side and it was so good and just as good as ones we've tried in France. Everything was so so so delicious I don't know how else to describe the food. For dessert get the crepes suzette and my toddler LOVED seeing it being torched. He kept saying "fire" for the rest of the night. The crepes and creme brulee were the perfect desserts to end our night. Thank you Jose, Morgan, and everyone at Alouette for the best mothers day dining experience. We will be back soon!

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant attached to the hotel and a great spot for later dinner / nibbles since it's a restaurant hotel. Great service and ambience. I found the tables to be a bit squished together. Probably if they took one or 2 small tables out, it's easier for servers to walk around. The food was absolutely delish. We had a bunch of plates to share but definitely will be back for a proper meal. Escargot comes 6 pcs to an order, drenched in garlic parsley and butter. So good. The moules frites were delicious too. Good portion. Lots of sauce to do dipping in. I loved the salad lyonnaise. Very flavourful. To top it all off, the mix the tartare table side which I didn't expect so it was a nice side show!

Yelp
Located inside Hotel Le Soleil, the restaurant is beautiful. However, only dine here if you have time to spare. SUPER SLOW SERVICE! I arrived on a weekday at 11:30am and one women literally did everything: hostess, take orders, expo, serve food, clear dishes. She was working hard and filled our water several times, but it was difficult to flag her down. I only saw one person in the kitchen and we waited a long time between our appy & main courses. They really need to hire more staff. Escargot: do not order, lacked flavour Rainbow trout almondine: they serve you the entire fish with brown butter sauce on the side. Fish was fresh, I recommend this dish! Chocolate mousse: I don't really care for chocolate, I just wanted a birthday candle on the cake (I specified "birthday" in the reso). Of course the server was too busy to pay attention to small details like that. Not a great place to celebrate a special occasion!

Yelp
Gorgeous interior, romantic and intimate. We came for happy hour and the hostess sat us down right away. Our server started us with our drinks and then proceeded to take our order. Our table was never cleared of menus & extra glasses until we requested. We ordered baked brie and moules er frites. The brie was warm and gooey, but the bread it came with was cold. The moules er frites lacked a bit of flavor, but the mussels were soft and fresh. For a fine dining establishment, the hospitality needs a lot of work. I felt that it was extremely rude for Adrian (server with glasses) to toss down the bill on our table, rather than handing it to us or placing it down nicely. The staff aren't friendly and we did not feel welcomed at all. Definitely disappointed and did not enjoy my experience here.

Yelp
Alouette was very enjoyable. What tops it for me was their outstanding service-- my waiter was friendly, patient, and attention oriented. But from what I observed, everyone else was also as kind and attentive. Anyways, onto the food: I came for their dine out menu. They're known for their duck and I had to try it out, hence I got the Duck Cassoulet. The outside was slightly tough, but once you make your way inside, the meat was perfectly tender. It was paired with lardon, sausage, cannellini beans, carrots, celeriac, tomato, onions fan of beans and was a burst of flavours. Unfortunately, I'm not a huge fan of beans but it was stacked full of it and so it made the dish slightly less enjoyable for me. Their Pate au gratin, which was shell pasta, mushrooms, truffle mournay, Gruyère was amazing! Arguably my favourite part of the whole menu. The cheese was strong but no overpowering, and I love how it had the perfect crisp on the shells! This was their vegetarian option. The beet salad wasn't the strongest appetizer they had on the menu. The beet itself was delicious, but everything else paired inside was not the greatest. Some of the leafy greens were also extremely bitter. This menu intrigued me because of the beef tartare, which was what I had come for originally. It was drenched in sauce and was over quite mediocre. They only offered one dessert-- chocolate mousse cake. First bite filled you with joy as it was so rich and creamy. However, it was soon too much and I had to take the rest home. Lovely dessert overall, but it was just too sweet for my own preference. Lovely interior & perfect atmosphere for a date night. I'd suggest trying to to sit right underneath the lining right below the second floor though, as accidents may happen through the gaps

Yelp
We stayed at the hotel and visited the restaurant for dinner and breakfast. The nice thing about the restaurant is that you get to see your food being prepared in the open kitchen. The place was definitely busy and thanks to the people working here for providing a great service. The place is well decorated with a nice retro feel. We ordered the Shrimp Cocktail and Panisse for appetizers. The Shrimp Cocktail was good. Panisse was a chickpeas based dish which we liked very much. For the entrees, we ordered a Lamb Stack and Coq au Vin (chicken). Lamb was my favorite - perfectly cooked to your preference and presented very well. Chicken was great too. For the breakfast we ordered French Toast and Smoked Salmon Toast. French Toast was made from a thicker slice of bread which was nice. Right amount of sweetness with a great maple syrup pairing. The Smoked Salmon Toast was good and just enough to start your day. Overall we definitely loved the food and will visit again.

Yelp
Inside/adjacent to the lovely Le Soleil Hotel and Suites. Don't be intimidated when you walk in, because it looks very fancy and you feel under-dressed... but that's okay. If you sit upstairs they do have a private elevator. Staff impeccable! Professional service and very attentive and friendly. Food was cooked perfectly. We went back two days later we were so impressed! Recommend parking by the newer underground lot next to the restaurant by the gym and YWCA. AVOID THE ONE ACROSS THE STREET. Recommend the French Onion Soup and the tenderloin. Other soups are great also and the vegetable du hour was a masterpiece in itself. Kudos to our waiter whose name was Darrin I believe...

Yelp
The restaurant itself it attached to a hotel, but don't let that dissuade you. It is a comfy, intimate type place. We arrived on a Friday night at 8:30pm, it was still quick crowded. We were seated quickly in the lower level near the kitchen. The service was friendly and attentive. The menu is not large, but does feature a good amount of choices. We started out with a nice pate (it was creamy and full flavored) and Niçoise salad. Both were very good. For a main, we split the lamb chops. They were cooked for perfection. Simply delicious. My only knock on the place was how long it took to get our food. +45 minutes. Not sure what happened. That said, I would return. N*joy!
