Alpaca Kitchen Review - Idyllwild - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Alpaca Kitchen is a short drive outside of downtown Idyllwild, but it’s also on the way to popular trailheads like Southridge and Ernie Maxwell. That makes this tiny coffee shop/cafe an ideal fuel-up spot. There’s a small sit-down area if you want a full breakfast, but our move is to grab a sausage-packed breakfast burrito from the hot case and a chagaccino, an iced latte infused with chaga mushrooms, cinnamon, vanilla, and monkfruit sweetener. It tastes great—just don’t ask us how.  " - Brant Cox

Google
10 stars all the way. Staff was attentive and friendly. There was no wait on New Year Day. Simple menu with a good variety of savory and sweet options for breakfast. Avocado toast was simple yet delicious! Generous portion for the price you pay. You can't find it anywhere at the price you pay with decent good. Oh not to mention their coffee is amazing 👏

Google
The food was good. Portions were small for the price, but I guess you can expect that from a mom and pop cafe. I wish they would have the options to choose from the bakery side on the menu from the restaurant, but they don't show them. We went for the coffee and the bakery and restaurant. But when we got the menu, it had regular coffee to order, and the waiter did let us know we could order but I had to look at completely different menu that I had to ask for and the bakery goods go fast and also aren't on the menu to select. But cute place and would go back again.

Excellent food, convenient location right off the main road into Idyllwild. The food was great, and made quickly! The pancakes were incredible, some of the best I've had. Staff were friendly, and checked in on us to make sure we had everything we needed! Overall a perfect breakfast.

The host and chef were super friendly. Chatted a bit about Moco Locos being from Hawaii. The food was delicious, and they accommodated my 3 dogs. Overall this place felt like my safe space in Idyllwild 🫱🏼‍🫲🏽

This is now a breakfast kitchen with high quality food. The omelettes were amazing. The menu is small, but you can order a mixture of whatever is clever. Not very busy. The coffee and tea are amazing. There is a deli for quick bites.

We got the vegan ramen. It was fine, but it really didn't taste good. The book chose was huge and impossible to cut with the chop sticks or spoon. It was expensive. I ate enough to not feel starving for the drive home.

Quiet after school drop offs. The perfect little lofi café with grab and go coffee shop under the same roof. No complaints, service, food, atmosphere and pricing are all areas where Alpaca shines.

Google
Cool weather, cool view &:cool manu, the restaurant is situated in a very desired real estate in the town. I ordered a dish of Chicken Katsu w/Curry. The chicken was breaded & deep fried. Base was sweet rice, which I like. Japanese curry over the top of chicken, potatoes & carrots were simple taste but a little hot. Side salad was looking good but I didn't get any taste because of my finicky companion ate all. My companion asked me how was the Katsu. I told my finicky friend that it was good. My friend nibbled ate it and silenced.

Yelp
Such a cute little spot that is connected to the coffee and tea place. Friendly service and unique food. The eggs and bacon were cooked perfectly! The sweet cream pancakes were not evenly sweet, perfect sized and very fluffy. Outdoor seating as well as indoor. Dog friendly on the patio. It got kind of busy around 9:30-9:40. We got here at 9ish and avoided a huge rush. I would love to come back and try their brunch foods!

Yelp
The airbnb host listed Alpaca kitchen on their where to eat recommendations. It's a short walk from the airbnb so I stopped by to get breakfast and tea. I was truly surprised by how delicious the food was. I sat on the patio with my dogs and got a breakfast burrito and a hot matcha latte. Service was good, portion was good, and price was fair. I went back in the afternoon to the cafe side to get another cold drink after our hike, and got another matcha latte the next morning for the trip home. That should tell you how much I liked the place. If you are in Idyllwild, definitely need to stop by Alpaca Kitchen.

Yelp
What's not to love? Good food, great service and beautiful ambiance! The restaurant is filled with delicious breakfast/brunch items that'll sure satisfy your cravings! I got the steak and eggs and it was very filling!! My tummy was so satisfied. If you happen to be in the area, be sure to stop by. And be sure to save room for drinks next door! :)

Yelp
Stopped for lunch on a hot day. Wings were juicy and nicely seasoned. We liked the flavor of the sauce. A good balance of a little heat and sweet. Wasabi fries Wasn't sure what to expect. Not too spicy but adds a hint of flavor of wasabi. Inside is super cute. Clean lines and modern colors. Don't forget to grab a strawberry matcha boba from the cafe side for the drive home. Would come back again.

Yelp
We came here at noon just to find out that they stop serving breakfast at 10 AM. We faced a new lunch menu that they started recently. Fair to say, maybe you should avoid this menu until they come out with a new one. First, the server never came by after we were seated but I think that's OK. We don't come to Idyllwild for the service. Second, we also never got a drink menu so knowing that there is a full café in the corner of the restaurant, we assumed that there would be some drink choices we could choose from. So when we finally asked somebody who came by, they said we serve coffee, lattes, etc. No specifics so you should already know what you want without knowing your options or the price. The AC is strong and the atmosphere is cute. There were some people on their laptops so I assume this is a nice place to catch up on work/study. Back to the menu- This new lunch menu was confusing and expensive. It felt unapproachable. We got a tonkotsu ramen ($20). The portion is small and the ramen is just OK. I would recommend something else. We also got a kabayaki-don ($15). It's cooked eggplants over rice. The eggplants were well cooked and it was soft enough to eat with a spoon (although you have to ask for a spoon and I would still recommend that you cut it with a knife). The sauce is sweet but yummy. The rice is undercooked - that made this dish sad. One last comment about the eggplant dish - it comes with slices of peppers. They are red and they are unassumingly spicy. They're actually incredibly spicy. No one told me that. So now you know more than I did. Continuing with the theme of lack of communication in this restaurant, the service is nice when you have a server. It will be slow service nonetheless and the check may never come. I was disappointed considering the other reviews raving about this place. The cute drawing of the alpaca and the friendly staff couldn't save this review from taking a different view.

Yelp
What a nice find in Idyllwild! Coffee shop on on side and restaurant on the other, both connected. Indoor space good for small groups (5 or less) of people to sit together. There are multiple tables. Clean inside. Food - The Brioche French Toast was good. Sweet cream pancakes were mini-size and fluffy. Breakfast burrito was the best - would recommend with bacon. Drinks - Good latte (hot). Good Nutella latte (hot). Good strawberry matcha milk tea.

Yelp
The Alpaca Kitchen does a great job of collaborating with Idyllwild outdoor environment, and introducing great breakfast in a seated or on the go option. The indoor area is perfectly spacious which helps with accessibility, and accommodates the outdoor with limited patio seating, as well. I ordered the Eggs Benedict, my wife grabbed the Brioche French toast and everything was amazing. Alpaca currently has burritos and spam musubi- to go! The staff are so kind, and do very well to exceed expectation with great customer service and a warm inviting presence. This elegant spot is a must for a relaxing start to your morning.

Yelp
New owner, son of Mama who retired. One waiter on for over ten tables. Waiter was lovely but.... Service slowwwww.... Fresh food is great but the time it took was sadly too long (approx. 30 mins-40). Waiter needs to be more attentive to those waiting and acknowledge time by checking back, offering coffee, toast, fries, something. Lastly, two prominent items featured within the "Alpaca Bowl" (namesake & written on the menu) were not in the bowl: Quinoa & Brussel Sprouts! When I mentioned this to the owner/female with baby she graciously gave us 10% off! The old owner's son (father of baby) arrogantly stated, "oh we haven't had that in months!!" Since the menus are printed on paper I thought to tell them would be a nice gesture so they could UPDATE THE MENU! Also on the same bowl I ordered the choice of Flank Steak and was asked what temp I requested "Rare." Well it came DARK BROWN/Well Without a hint of pink at all. We would have complained but with the service being so slow (kitchen times that is) I figured we wouldn't ever see it cooked to temp or be able to leave so we decided not to say anything. Yet again another are where a "Rare" could have made all the difference in serving time, not to mention how tough the meat was-Beef Jerky was pretty much the texture. I know flank steak is tough but this was exceptional & had probably been pre-cooked and reheated and served would be my guess Love this place, love the food, choices and flavors but the Son taking over doesn't do his Mom's legacy Justice. The Son just doesn't seem to care or have a sense of urgency. His employees do, his wife does, his Mama did maybe he needs to find his inner fire

Yelp
Great coffee and brunch place! It is modern with delicious foods and great healthy options, all kids of coffee drinks. I had Ratatouille Toast and it was perfect, lots of tasty veggjes on crispy toast with an egg on top. Came with blueberry spinach salad. My decaf latte was great too. My husband and son enjoyed pancakes with eggs and sausage.

Yelp
Formerly the Mile High Cafe, Alpaca Kitchen has a fresh new look and a small tasty menu. We had the Sweet cream pancakes and Eggs Benedict, both were generous portions, served hot and delicious and pretty quickly give how busy they were. They could use one more waiter, but the service was fine. About a 10 minute wait to be seated. On the coffee bar side, try the cherry blossom ice tea - wonderful!

Yelp
The food was tasty and the service was great ! They have a full coffee bar across the diner. If you're in the area it's worth stopping by.

Yelp
Food was delicious. Decor was clean and modern. Great location just outside of town so you can avoid the big crowds. Owners are very kind and friendly. Highly recommend!

Yelp
After being a local for years..... this is a total total disappointment. I had a couple buddies come up to ride the trails and decided to spread some love to this restaurant. NEVER AGAIN! My buddies ordered breakfast burritos and they were served with the McDonald's potato cake. The service was poor at best, the product mediocre at best. Quite honestly- when people come up here they look for mountain ambience rather than decor that is cold, hard and looks like something out of Westwood. I was truly embarrassed by everything at Alpaca..... the graphics in their logo says warm and cuddly and the interior couldn't have been more of a contradiction. The menu is always changing and this was the last time I'll go. One would think that a bit of consumer research might be in order.....not so. Such a pity as this is an opportunity lost. I asked some locals this morning at a meeting in another location and without exception- the consensus was 100% of what we experienced.

Yelp
Our family had a wonderful experience. The food was amazing! It has the kickback and relax atmosphere. The Beef Bulgogi was the bomb! If you've never had it, you'll never find better in my opinion. French toast was amazing. I ordered Croque Madame, it was sooooo good! I love different types of food, and do they deliver, it was wonderful. The menu was diverse. What a pleasure to go up the hill and enjoy a fantastic meal. Would I recommend this place? Yes, in a heartbeat! Looking forward to going here again!

Yelp
Stopped by with friends for the first time. Many items on the menu were marked as "not available." The service was slow and once the food arrived the poached eggs were more raw than cooked (poached eggs should be cooked well enough to prevent salmonella). The final straw was when A 20% GRATUITY WAS AUTOMATICALLY ADDED TO OUR GROUP OF 4. Seriously, 20% for a small group? For this reason alone we will not be returning. If you do decide to visit to eat here be informed about these issues and do not accept poor service, food that is marginally okay to eat, and absolutely do not be pressured to overpay a gratuity. I was going to speak up but the couple I was with wasn't comfortable with it and we were in a hurry to leave as the late food was delivered late.

Yelp
Fresh delicious ingredients, super cute cafe, outdoor and indoor seating options Amazing coffee A must-go in Idy!

Yelp
FRUIT TOAST & a NUTELLA LATTE...you will not be disappointed. I know what you're thinking, pretty basic items but no they are not. The sheer amount of goodness stacked upon the top of those thick slices of brioche bread is pure delicious madness. It's just flavor in every corner and every mound. The textures dance around in your mouth as you lament the fact that once you chew it down it's one bite closer to being gone. On the upside though it's pure bliss. And then you get to take sips of another delight which is the Nutella latte (warm). Also they did it right, the Nutella isn't floating around in blobs, it's mixed in perfectly with the drink. You seriously won't be disappointed, it's a cool place with a cool alpaca logo/illustration on the menu (kinda want a hat and t-shirt with it on it), great customer service and good food.

Yelp
Ate at Alpaca this past weekend. The food was delicious! In our group we had the Fun Guy Stir Fry which was a terrific mix of flavor and textures. Lots of vegetables on a bed of Jasmine rice. Very Satisfying. We also had the Teriyaki Duck breast that was so tender and full of flavor. The third dish was the Coconut Ginger Salmon. Just moist and yummy. The prices are good and the portions are generous. Everything came out nice and hot. There was a little delay on the salmon but not a problem. We splurged and also had the mussels, not my go to seafood, but delicious. Served with noodles in a spicy sort of soup/sauce. It was really flavorful and good. We will come again soon.

Yelp
Excellent food. 5 star service. Prices are very reasonable. Beautiful setting. My wife and I had brunch here, met the owner who accommodates every table. As the owner of a large corporation the entire experience was 5 star. I 100% recommend without hesitation this restaurant!

Yelp
From the time we arrived, things went south. I wish the cafe would just say - we are busy and we just can not handle the crowds. Instead, we were made to wait 15 minutes to be seated, another 15 to take our order. I guess this should have been a warning sign already, but then there were several items on the menu that were not available (who runs out of hollandaise sauce for Sunday Brunch?). Once the order was taken, we had to wait at least 45 minutes to receive our food. When we inquired, we were first told that the food will be right out, and 15 minutes later that we are busy. I have been to many restaurants around rush hour, and they always warn the customers beforehand about their service load. So a lunch that was supposed to be a fun atmosphere for everyone turned into drama with the waitress and the manager. Please PLEASE - if you cannot handle the crowds, please warn your customers from the beginning.

Yelp
This place is incredible. I have been a huge fan of the flavored specialty lattes (matcha and coffee) and pastries at Alpaca Coffee & Tea for years, and now they also own the space next door with brunch food and it's just as amazing. I had the ham eggs benedict with home fries and I have had a lot of eggs benedict over the years, this one was top notch. The sauce was on point, the ham was shaved thin and lean and tasty, and the english muffins were crispy, the breakfast potatoes alongside were seasoned to perfection and air crispy. Just perfection. Aaron our server was a delight. I would eat here every morning if I was a local.

Yelp
I just got Alpaca's Steak Sandwich to go. It was without a doubt the best steak sandwich that I've ever had. The fries that came with it were crisp, fresh and delicious. This place is the real deal! I was a long time customer of Nam's at Mile High Cafe. It looks like her son Jason didn't fall far from the tree because his menu is innovative and the quality is top notch.

Heather U.

Yelp
We came in Aug 25 at like 5 and we were never served. The two tables next to us were served. Slow, but served. She said she would be right with us.The 4 of us waited and waited and I smiled when she walked by. Nothing. I just thought maybe she's overwhelmed so we will wait. Nope, not a single word. After 10/15 min we left. I'm ok with slow, but how long should we wait to even ask if we want a drink or anything? Super strange to not even talk to a family sitting right in the middle.

Nacho F.

Yelp
Best duck I have ever had! The staff is very nice and went out of their way to make my dining experience enjoyable. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area! Total hidden gem in the mountains.

Yelp
4th of July. Just went to google. This place is off the charts. Ambiance is just what you want in a mountain town. The fusion food is the best. We had duck and stir fry.. so yummy . The fries Chris's and salty... perfect. Service .. perfect.. fast , friendly.. I would highly recommend this. For those in the Coachella valley .. the temperature is 25degrees cooler.

Declan K.

Yelp
This is a new place in Idyllwild. It used to be Mile High cafe now it's Alpaca Kitchen. I had the Duck my friend had the Salmon. Both dishes where great. The atmosphere was light and airy. The staff where great with explaining each dish. The place is clean friendly. They also have a coffee shop attached to the restaurant. You can have expresso after lunch. I highly recommend Alpaca Kitchen.

Laura H.

Yelp
Delightful brunch spot with friendly staff and great food. Stop by the cafe and check out their Strawberry-Matcha iced latte too!

Tara D.

Yelp
Great friendly service and quality food, I love that their meat is pasture raised. This is our new favorite spot on the mountain. The coffee from the attached coffee bar is also excellent
