The 15 Essential Berkshires Restaurants

"Alpamayo has been a local favorite in downtown Lee since 2010, offering Peruvian classics such as lomo saltado and ceviche. Chef Javier Fernandez, an award-winning bartender, brings his A-game to his cocktail menu with a stunning pisco sour and refreshing chilcano (pisco, ginger beer, lime)." - Emma Van Slyck, Stephanie Gravalese

(Note: I write these reviews in part for my own nationwide business clients, for travel and activity inspiration. Follow me for more! I’m a financial planner - CFP®️practitioner - with a focus on retirement wealth strategies, primarily serving business women and LGBTQ individuals. #VirtualPlanningCraftedWithCare®️) I really enjoyed this restaurant! It’s located in the down town strip. Small place but has enough seating. We found the establishment clean and the server was friendly and attentive. Great food. I had the chicken soup and it may be the best I’ve had. I also had the steak with a fried egg and fries. Also very good. The meat was well seasoned and cook how I asked. The menu was marked with GF options. Thanks! It’s a family friendly restaurant and very likely to be LGBTQ friendly, given the town it’s in. Gender neutral rest room. Also a mobility friendly place. Stop in. It’s worth a visit.

Google
we got the fried yucca, fish taco, and arroz chaufa con pollo. way overpriced for rice that was good but tasted like i made it in my mom’s kitchen. plus the portions were pretty small; the $6 order of yucca had about 8 pieces

Google
When the food is THIS FANTASTIC, I really don't care that the restaurant is small and simple. (I think there were 8 booths...maybe 10.) In all seriousness, the food was so good we considered driving up from central CT JUST to eat there again. Please eat here and keep this place open-it's a diamond in the rough.

We stopped by on our way from Niagara Falls to Boston. Pleasant surprise. The food was delicious. I loved the beet goat cheese salad. My husband loved the clam chowder. Very smart to be open between lunch and dinner.

We drove 1 1/2 hr to visit this Peruvian restaurant …I was very disappointed to say the least. We ordered 2 Pisco Sour (1 regular and 1 maracuyá) that were pure crushed ice, tasted like water and could not taste the alcohol. We had to order one shot of pisco each to fix the drink. We then we ordered fish ceviche. It wasn’t fresh and the choclo was very hard. I wanted to leave, but my partner was hungry and wanted to go for strike 3 - and ordered the whole chicken, rice, beans and plátanos maduros. It was better than our previous two orders, but it was my first and last visit!

Amazing food! And wonderful service!! Visiting Massachusetts for a week and wanted to take my Wife to a place we never tried. Came across this cute little place close by to the Berkshire Holiday Inn Oak n’ Spruce. We tried the Lomo Saltado and Pescado a Lo Macho, they both were amazing!! Loved the fries and sautéed onions with the steak in the Lomo Saltado. And loved that there were little octopus in the Pescado a Lo Macho. Definitely would come here if you want something new and delicious!!

Google
We got there a half hour before closing.. the food came out within 10 minutes! I ordered the Lomo.. my hunny ordered rotisserie chicken! They were both good. The dressing on the salad was different.. almost like a mustard dressing.. the fries were fresh.. the lomo was well seasoned and tender.. the white rice was perfect! The service was good.. they ran out of the dessert I wanted (caramel custard) so we didn’t try anything else.. but I was tempted to try the carrot cake.. but i was full anyways..

(Updated Review for 2021) If I was forced to pick a favorite all time restaurant it would be this one, and I have been to a lot of restaurants. Every dish I have tried here has been superb: the Lomo Saltado is my favorite, and is perhaps the most flavorful and enjoyable beef dish I have tried. The new york strip and filet mignon options are both good also. The chicken soup here is exceptional, as is the fried rice, which are both good options for kids. My father always gets the excellent Quinoa and Shrimp chowder. Also try the peruvian limenade, it is a really nice drink and I like to enjoy it with the corn they bring out with appetizers. The quinoa salad is very good here as well. I have been coming here for years, though I live in New York and only pass through Lee very rarely. I wish I lived closer just so I could eat here more often!

Yelp
This is our second visit and the second time we enjoyed a delicious Peruvian meal with wonderful friendly service. While the ambiance is simple, our meals were wonderful. We shared a few ceviches among the five of us, and then each got our own mains. My fish with Ajo sauce was wonderful, and my wife's fish soup was excellent. My son enjoyed a beef stir fry that echoed of the Asian influences in Peru. Prices were reasonable and we all enjoyed the experience.

Yelp
Delicious fish and chips (would've ordered the ceviche but was not feeling great but so glad to have ordered) and seafood soup! The tilapia was some of the best fish I've ever had!!! It was super Moist and flavorful. The French fries or chips were standard and not as flavorful but fine with ketchup :) had a lot to brought back leftovers for next day lunch!

Yelp
Typical Mexican restaurant. Problem having a menu that is 6 pages in small print. Too much. Ordered a chapolte burrito. It was smothered with way too much cheese sauce. Entrees will run you $20-25. Too much for basic Mexican fast food. Service was quick. Less then 5 minutes from ordering to table.

Shalisa C.

Yelp
First eat me say our food was delicious! The seafood and fish soup was a taste sensation! Service was efficient fast but not particularly friendly in an American way. This is not a bad thing it's more of we are from a more southern state and used to a more warm and chatty type of service. This was very direct European type of service. The decor reminds you of an old 80's pizza place with the wooden bench booths. Not fancy at all. Street parking. Small bar although we did not have drinks. Soft drinks are served and charged per can with a glass of ice.

Yelp
Dimly lit intimate space...you will experience traditional music, TV futbol games, drink and fare of Peru with a smattering of Americano. Polite service, be patient with prep. A complimentary snack of roasted corn is offered. The mixed seafood civiche is served with corn and roasted yucca and topped with sliced red onion. I ordered the seafood paella which had calamari, clam, mussels and shrimp. The rice was bright almost turmeric like also topped with thin sliced red onion. They also use Peas and carrots which are Al dente. I would definitely recommend trying this place and - tip of the day is don't miss the the passion fruit pisco (Maraguya) or the cusequna beer (very malty).
google avatar

Yelp
We ordered the seafood paella and grilled steak. Both of them were the absolutely delicious. This was the best paella I've had in Massachusetts! It was a hot summer day and the staff recommended the Chicha Morada. This was our first time trying this drink and it was so heavenly! The perfect blend of spices and sweetness. We had a glass each. But I could just drink a whole pitcher of it! I hope we go back soon.

Yelp
We stopped in and got the seafood fish soup to go. It was very garlicky and delicious. Had big pieces of shrimp and fish. Highly recommended. Will definitely come back when we are in the neighborhood

Yelp
It is seldom that I hit Lee, Mass. While over in Lee, we decided to try out this Peruvian restaurant. So many choices, but just time for lunch. We will be returning to Alpamayo perhaps on another day. I had the seafood paella while SO had the fried seafood platter. OMG! I had a few bites of his and shared a few bites of mine. Both were just delicious. Of course, that all depends on whether or not you like seafood. It was fresh and plentiful. There were lots of calmari both on top of the rice and in the flavorful rice. On top was shrimp, mussels, calmari and a clam. I am a fan of tentacles and there were a number of these strewn throughout the dish. SO's fried dish was also a beautiful dish with so many tentacles (which I am happy to say he shared with me). I have not had the opportunity to eat in Peru but look forward to it one day. Staff were friendly and efficient. Parking was on the street, however, I did see signs that there is public parking off the main drag. So many options we did not try which just means we'll have to go back for more.

Yelp
Went last night from out of town for weekend! Food was absolutely incredible I had the steamed salmon it was cooked perfect and the sauce and seasoning was to die for! My date had coconut shrimp she thoroughly enjoyed her meal as well! We had 2 Peruvian cocktails that were out of this world! Server friendly and very accommodating! The atmosphere is a small quaint setting great overall place! We will be back

Yelp
What a delicious surprise! We've seen this spot for years when visiting the Berkshires, but never went in. We were actually searching Yelp for dinner ideas nearby and saw the great ratings Alpamayo had- so we decided on giving it a try, and are so glad we did! We started with a beet and apple salad topped with goat cheese crumbles, which was delicious and healthy, then shared the seafood paella and the lomo saltado. The paella was good, although a bit more seafood would have been nice. The lomo saltado was new to both of us and was very good! The beef had great flavor and the sauce really complemented both the sweet sautéed onions and the crispy fries. Sadly, no room for dessert.
google avatar

Theresa R.

Yelp
I was looking forward to the seafood paella dish but it was bland and had very little seafood in it. I asked for something to spice it up. My friend ordered the salmon dish and much of it was raw. The service was fine. Probably will not go here again.

Yelp
Getting 7 adults and 2 kids to agree upon a restaurant for dinner is not always an easy task. However, after finding Alpamayo on Yelp, we all agreed to give it a try and were so happy that we did. The Peruvian food, new to all of us, was so delicious, flavorful and plentiful. One of our best meals while visiting the Berkshires was here at Alpamayo. The entrees were prepared with fresh ingredients and came out pipping hot. The Saltado, whether with chicken or shrimp, was by far one of the best entrees of the night. The Paella was average, but our other entrees, including the salmon was awesome. The time between placing our order and receiving our food was a lengthy one, but definitely worth it. In addition to their vast selection of Peruvian entrees, they offer a kids menu (chicken fingers, fish and chips, hot dog, etc.)

Yelp
I really love this restaurant and feel for them with how the lack of work and pandemic have affected quantity of food. Haven't ordered since the pandemic began and a little disappointed for portion size on the $18 ceviche mixto. Still delicious and a great appetizer after a day of biking and hiking. Now off to find something that will fill me up
google avatar

Michele N.

Yelp
This was my first time there and first time trying Peruvian food. Every thing was delicious, the only thing that was not so good was the enormous amount of onions in my dish. I like onions, just not in that amount. Definitely recommend it if you're in western Massachusetts.
google avatar

Charlotte H.

Yelp
First Peruvian place I've been to on the East Coast and the ceviche was excellent. The service was on the slow side but the menu was great and even accommodating to kids (my son had sweet potatoes and some of my husbands shrimp). The lemonade was also a delight.

Yelp
Zero complaints about the food, service or prices at Alpamayo. We went awhile ago and have been saying every time we're in the Berkshires that we need to go back and finally did this trip. The menu is great. So many items to pick from! I tried a glass of the Chicha Morada which is made from fruits, spices and purple corn and loved it so much that we splurged and got a pitcher. Yum! I also love the popcorn kernals they serve as a free app before your meal. We tried the beef heart appetizer. Incredibly yummy. I loved the spices they used and you definitely don't see that on a menu every day. For my main dish, I went with the seafood cau cau which comes with clams, mussels, scallops, shrimp and calamari stewed with potatoes and peas in just the most delicious broth with a serving of rice in the center. Can I say again how delicious this dish is?! My partner got the steamed salmon and he thought it was perfect. Prices were super reasonable for this amazing food. We'll have to go back again next trip!

Yelp
I wish my steak was medium and eggs runny as I requested them. The fries were great though. Plantains were sweet. It was a okay meal. Service was good. Parking was fairly easy to find.

Yelp
The food is excellent-consistently so. Still is. But dinner time on a Sunday evening- don't waste your time trying to enjoy dinner here (6 PM) But man, the staffing and service is so bad, I take 3 stars off. yes, there's a labor shortage. But do you guys thinks that because you're the only Peruvian (read: tasty) restaurant in the Berkshires, you can get away with ignoring customers, sitting @ tables, waiting to order? Really? No soon up, please forgive us, not a word from the server (the only one in the place-and (its not small)....those are the little things which makes one forgive what they are going through. But ignoring people? What's the idea behind that? No corn to nibble on (gone I get THAT), but 10 minutes to get a glass of water.... No, If I do return, (big if) it will never be at a "rush hour" , however given that they stop serving @ 8PM on Sunday,, and we're there for a weekend, I am not inclined to favor this place. Just a bad bad taste in my mouth We can , and do eat and enjoy Peruvian food in NY, without this attitude.
google avatar

Laura S.

Yelp
What a gem of a restaurant! I didn't expect to have amazing Peruvian food in my time in the Berkshires, but Alpamayo proved me wrong. It's a cute restaurant in the Lee area that has a great menu. We got the ceviche mixto to start, the shrimp in aji amarillo sauce, and rotisserie chicken. The ceviche mixto was very fresh and had great citrus flavors. The shrimp dish was the favorite! The aji amarillo sauce was so decadent and paired so nicely with the rice. The yellow rice with veggies was so fresh and some of the best I've ever had. The rotisserie chicken was tender and moist. The fries that came with it were the that extra crispy kind that are the best. Plantains were also delicious! Very casual atmosphere with good food, good drinks, and friendly service.
google avatar

Yelp
We love this place, great food, great drinks and great service. We kept coming back here every time we are in Lee Massachusetts. I love the seafood and fish ceviche and fish taco. However there's more great food.
google avatar

Yelp
Like being back in Lima, but in Lee. Food and ambiance reminiscent of normal everyday Cafe in Lima. Huge kernel corn like in Peru. Came here a few years ago. I think they had Alpaca on the menu back then, but now heavy on seafood. Delicious corn on cob with cheese accented with Chica Morada, a classic Peruvian drink. Like others have commented, once the place got packed service was slower as only one server is there. But she was very nice given how much she had to do. Roller skates might have been handy! Will come back again when in the area.

Yelp
Tastes like home style Peruvian and so glad it is open on a Tuesday evening. For four people we enjoyed one order of Jalea, one Lomo Saltado, one shrimp with fried rice. My younger had chicken tenders and fries. Setting is casual diner style and sat in a booth. Had tres leches cake for dessert. Would return for casual dining good for kids and adults.
google avatar

Irene E.

Yelp
This Peruvian seafood eatery is on Lee's main street. We went in to grab a late late lunch at nearly 4pm after KBT hike and before the concert. The restaurant was empty with one table of four people by the window. The hostess sat us in the back in the tiny booth for two, which I won't mind if they're busy. By the time we left, a couple came in and were treated to the more spacious booth. The food was ok, overly salty - for someone who loves salt. The Cusqueña beer is interesting: it uses pyramid as logo - Peru has pyramid isn't widely know.
google avatar

Caleb T.

Yelp
A small, quiet, friendly restaurant in the downtown area of Lee. Service is friendly and quick. I had the Lomo Saltado (Sautéed Beef), and the rest of my party had the Seared Scallops and Garlic Shrimp. The Beef was an amazing sample of the type of flavor available at this discreet restaurant. The Seared Scallops were "some of the best I've ever had" according to one party member. A glowing review from them, I may add. There was something to be desired from the Garlic Shrimp, but it was admittedly still extremely flavorful. All in all, I say this little restaurant on Main Street has earned its glowing reviews, and also one of my own.
google avatar

Keith M.

Yelp
The service is a little slow due to there was only 1 person waiting on everyone. She did a pretty good job keeping up with all the tables. I ordered the Pescado a Lo Macho but wasn't sure about it. The food was great. The fried fish covered in the aji Amarillo sauce with shrimp, clams and mussels was outstanding. My wife ordered the Jalea, which was the fried seafood platter. Everything on the plate was cooked perfectly.
google avatar

Pamela L.

Yelp
Food was meh, service was worse. They only had one server on a Saturday night...okay, help is hard to find....but if patrons have to wait 45 minutes for their dinners, put some bread or chips on the table. Peruvian chicken was dry and tasteless. The fries were not fresh cut and were mealy and soggy. The two shrimp dishes were okay, very garlicy, but tasty. We paid cash because it took 20 minutes to get the check and we didn't want to find out how long it would take to get the credit card receipt.
google avatar

Nikki S.

Yelp
Omg where do I begin. We came in with a bigger group of six this past Friday night. We had made a reservation and were seated immediately. For drinks we ordered a pitcher of the pisco sour for the table. This is the drink Peru is known for. Very similar to a margarita and very delicious. We ordered lots of appetizers. The octopus, calamari, potatoes with cheese, and the shrimp ceviche. Everything was OUT OF THIS WORLD. Dinner was nothing short of spectacular. Every person ordered something different. I had the fish macho. I could have licked the sauce off of my plate..... but I am a lady so I held myself back. My husband had the seafood cau cau and it was soooooo yummy. Others ordered shrimp and garlic, and steak with an egg. Everything was spectacular and perfectly cooked. Service was extraordinary. Don't be put off by the size of this establishment. You just need to eat here! I promise it will be one of the best meals that you've ever eaten.
google avatar

Aditi J.

Yelp
Such an amazing Peruvian food! I tried this speciality for the first time and I absolutely loved it. Every single dish was just perfect! It's definitely a must try place.

Yelp
Our first visit. We love Peruvian cuisine, and so chose Alpamayo based on Yelp reviews. Small, family restaurant with simple décor. We will return when in the area. We enjoyed our dinner of Pollo Saltado with rice and fries, and the 1/2 chicken entrée with fries and house salad. Also ordered side of creamy Peruvian beans made from Peruano beans that will remind you of Cannellini beans. See Pics Tip: Can highly recommend Pollo Saltado (a Chinese-inspired traditional Peruvian dish) based on freshness and complexity of flavors. Will remind you of Asian cooking. Pluses: Friendly service. Full bar. If I wasn't driving for hours more, would have tried a traditional Pisco Sour...a delightfully refreshing Peruvian (and Chilean) drink. Where: Minutes off I90 in downtown Lee. Street parking is free. Dinner daily except closed Monday; Lunch Fri-Sun Small Gripe: Would prefer the option to choose rice and beans as alternative to French Fries for uplift charge. Alert: Kitchen is small and can see that this place could easily be over-whelmed when full with diners.

Yelp
Visited during COVID, and the restaurant had patrons well spaced out. Ordered a variety of dishes including the Peruvian rotisserie chicken which was delicious and juicy! Came with French fries which were crispy and a fresh side salad. Had the lomo saltado which was a great blend of steak, onions, and tomato over a bed of French fries with a side of white rice; steak was tender but wish there was a bit more of it! Menu was quite large and anticipate being able to find something for everyone; also quite diverse and included a lobster roll even.

Wendy V.

Yelp
First time at this restaurant. The food was very well prepared and service was friendly. Ceviche was bright in taste and not over marinated - which so often is an issue. There was only one person handling the front of the house, which made service slow, but the excellent food made the wait worthwhile.

Candace A.

Yelp
Enjoyed the Peruvian beef tip over fries and the blue corn beverage with cinnamon and cloves.
google avatar

Bushra A.

Yelp
This is a great Peruvian restaurant not too far from Albany, NY. Very convenient to stop by if you come to the outlets. The food is the best Peruvian you can get in the area close by. I have been several times and loved most of their items. I like seafood Jalea, chicken, Chichi Morada drink, lomo saltado and tres leches cake. The Peruvian corn they serve is awesome!
google avatar

Janet A.

Yelp
Very good authentic food, customer service, and environment. The food is full of flavor and worth the drive. You won't regret visiting this place. This small restaurant belongs on a show for best hidden restaurant. Enjoy!
google avatar

Darcie S.

Yelp
Best Peruvian food! Great service. Family-owned business. Go here!

Carolina M.

Yelp
Small restaurant with great service, polite and attentive. Definitely recommend. We visited for lunch, they have a large selection of beers and cocktails.
google avatar

Alex S.

Yelp
Great dishes for a Peruvian spot in the middle of nowhere, every time I come shopping to the outlets this is a must stop
google avatar

Ruby R.

Yelp
Delicious chicha morada, pisco sour, ceviche, and yucca fries. We also had chicken and aji amarillo shrimp which were good. Service was quick and friendly. A pleasant surprise to find good Peruvian food in the Berkshires!
google avatar

Kate M.

Yelp
This restaurant is a hidden gem in the Berkshires! Delicious, flavorful, fresh and filling food. The original mojito was bright and refreshing, and had a nice kick. The seafood ceviche was delicious, simple and well balanced. Lobster roll was cooked perfectly, the lobster wasn't chewy at all, and it was seasoned perfectly. Our server, Mirabella, was wonderful. Will be back and bringing friends.

Hannah R.

Yelp
You've never had such delicious food. We're on our way from Boulder, CO to Vermont, and having been to Alpamayo once before (last summer) we literally headed straight there when we stopped for the night before our last little push. I don't even like white fish, though I love most others. I love ceviche. Here, I actually enjoy the ceviche pescado more than mixto - even fresh shrimp couldn't improve their basic marinade. Not the most world-traveled, but honestly, have you ever had this enormous Peruvian corn?? Each kernel is its own freshly made tortilla chip. We are so so happy to see that Alpamayo is so high in the rankings of Lee/Lenox restaurants. It deserves every single star.
google avatar

LeiLou O.

Yelp
Food was good but you have to ask for sauces and utensils for takeout. We got the lomo saltado, seafood paelle, and another fish/shrimp pasta dish. It wasn't too busy when I went. I recommend calling ahead- and the kitchen closed at 7:30pm.
google avatar

Monce D.

Yelp
Okay, this place is great! Food is really good, tho because of it being so good you will have to wait almost an hour for it. They're extremely busy at times, don't know if they're short staffed but they deserve 5 stars! Can't wait to visit again!
google avatar

Jodi O.

Yelp
My husband went to Alpamayo for dinner Saturday night. The food is excellent- I never had Peruvian cuisine before. The restaurant also has a full bar with top Shelf alcohol .

Karyn G.

Yelp
You might pass this place because of it's subtle presence but you MUST give it a try-- you'll keep coming back. We gave it a try when we decided not to wait in a long line a couple of doors down. Best decision we ever made. You will find authentic Peruvian dishes and everything is delicious! The ambiance is quiet and subdued, staff is friendly and service is simple (only 1 server) and on the slow side. We've enjoyed the fish soup, the Lomo Saltado (steak), Shrimp in creamy Amarillo sauce (a little spicy) and kids fries with chicken tenders. Now we come here every time we visit the Berkshires. My kids love it here. It's family friendly, but also great for a simple date night.
google avatar

Amy B.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite restaurants in the area. I always look forward to going through the Berkshires so I can stop by Lee and eat at Alpamayo. Such delicious Peruvian dishes- I crave my favorites! -Favorite Cocktail: Maracuya Sour- the perfect blend of sweet and sour passion fruit and pisco. -Favorite Appetizer/Side: Toasted Peruvian corn. -Favorite Dish: Picante de Camarones- shrimp in a creamy yellow sauce with a hint of spice, served over sliced potatoes, with hard boiled egg and white rice.

Yelp
Perfectly good Peruvian food in a small town! I ordered 2 lomo saltados and a fried chicken wings appetizer to go. The food was prepared quick and was still fresh when I got home with it. Pretty good portions for both. My only concern were the wings were a bit too salty and saucy but the meat well cooked and tender. I would have totally eaten here if given the chance because they have a full bar and a comfortable environment and welcoming staff.

Isabella H.

Yelp
Highly recommend the chicken soup. The plantains were also very soft and delicious, and the juices (maracuya and mango) were the perfect level of sweetness. Overall very quality food and service.
google avatar

Viva B.

Yelp
Incredible place and super delicious! I had a Peruvian chicken dish served on potatoes and rice. My friend had a Peruvian Seafood soup and a side of fried yucca. Totally worth the stop!

Yelp
This little eaterie offers some unusual dishes. Everything was fresh and well prepared. They sported Kobi burger, Wagyu beef, and potatoes - which seemed a bit of a reach. And a tasty limeade that tasted a bit like whiskey sour mix. Can't speak to the authenticity of the cusisine, but it was tasty and unusual.
