Alpine Gourmet Prato Borni

"The fine dining restaurant of the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof, in the town centre, serves two fantastic set menus made with top-notch ingredients: "Heimat" seeks inspiration in the region and "Fernweh" looks to foreign climes. The classically elegant dining area is done out with fine wood panelling, and the front-of-house team provides well-coordinated service. Impressive wine list!" - Michelin Inspector

The food was generally tasty, but surprisingly far too salty and got simpler. We’ve visited this restaurant several times, but sadly, it feels like things are going downhill. There used to be a great sommelier and lovely staff, and the wine pairing was one of our favourite parts of the experience. We even bought many of the wines they recommended in the past — but not anymore. This time, the wine pairing just wasn’t impressive. As for the food, aside from being overly salty, it lacked any sense of care or motivation. The dishes looked a bit sad. Overall, the experience didn’t have the same spark it used to.

Great experience. They have 2 different menù, 6 courses each, we decided to combine them. Food was perfect. The service was great. The wines were awesome and well explained.

Wonderful evening enjoying a 6 course meal with perfectly paired wines by the sommelier. And they have an extraordinary wine list to say the least. Over 700 wines from the world over to pick from but I highly suggest that you try the Swiss wines as they will blow your mind. The chef and his team prepared two different gourmet menus to chose from. The staff was very friendly for a Michelin star restaurant which we welcomed. The sommelier took the time to explain each wine and why he paired it with the dish, making it very informative for wine lovers. Highly recommended. We'll be back.

We recently dined here, and unfortunately it did not meet our expectations. We have dined at fine restaurants around the world (including Michelin rated restaurants) and therefore went in with reasonable expectations. We both chose five courses (3 starters, 1 main, and dessert) by mixing between the two menus (homestyle and international). Note that if mixing, all at the table must select the same items - not a problem for us, but it might be an inconvenience for those who have different taste preferences/restrictions. Of the five courses, we each thought two of the five were terrific: we both enjoyed the Beef Filet Irish Beef Club and the scallops, and my wife enjoyed the Felchlin Grand Cru Elvesia for dessert. The rest of our courses were so-so. We felt like the two-menu format should either be changed to one set menu and/or an a la carte option. The cost (170 CHF/person) was reasonable for an esteemed restaurant, but not for the quality we received. For beverages, I chose the wine pairing, and my wife chose to order from the cocktail menu. If I were to do it again, I would not have done the wine pairing and instead chosen one bottle of wine or a cocktail. Like the food, the wines were hit or miss, and the pour size was very small: 1 dl pours means we paid 105 CHF for the equivalent of <2/3 a standard bottle of wine. The service was poorly timed and uncoordinated. During our visit, we were served by two different gentlemen and at least three ladies. They didn't seem to have set roles, and they didn’t seem to communicate. Water glasses would remain empty for several minutes at a time. My wine pairing would be poured several minutes before the food was served. My wife was served her beverage while mine was forgotten - it happens sometimes, and I wouldn’t complain except for the fact that we overheard the same mistake happen at the table next to ours. The initial finger foods were laid out before our menus arrived, causing us to have to hold our menus so that they didn’t touch the food. The waitress poured olive oil for our bread out of a store-bought container while explaining that the oil came from Italy. At the end of the night, we were ready to end the experience and return home. We really want this restaurant to succeed, however it will take substantial changes to the menu and service before we would return. Hopefully the management sees this review and makes the necessary changes. We anticipate they will lose their Michelin star soon.

It was a fantastic dining experience. We chose local Swiss 6 course menu and it wowed us. The perch was perfectly cooked, the layers of flavour was amazing. All the wait staffs are professional, they are specialising in service and wine. They service cheese all produced in Switzerland. Will be back again. Thanks everyone for this absolutely fantastic evening. A highlight in my Zermatt trip.

My experience was rather disappointing. Most of the food was mediocre, with the exception of one outstanding meat dish unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to redeem the overall visit. A major issue was the lack of transparency around pricing. Appetizers and digestives were brought out without any explanation, making it seem like they were included. Only later did I find out they were quite expensive. Interestingly, the cheese selection which was also presented without clarification was included, and genuinely enjoyable. This inconsistency felt misleading and left a bad impression. That kind of upselling tactic is something I really don’t appreciate.

My Husband and I visited Restaurant Prato Borni on our honeymoon in Zermatt. Unfortunately I had broken my leg skiing during this trip and we were searching for nice experiences we could still enjoy together. We were so lucky to have the opportunity to visit Prato Borni. The dining room itself is stunning and we were lucky enough to be sat near the front window during and evening of beautiful snowfall. The staff could not have been more kind, helpful and accomodating of my slow mobility, even finding a little stool to rest my leg on. These things made our stay even more special. This is before even mentioning the food!! Wow, what an experience we were treated to by Chef Heinz Rufibach. We thorough enjoyed the Heimat menu which showcased the local Swiss cuisine and produce. Absolutely delicious. We had a magical evening dining at Prato Borni. After what had been a challenging time for us, this dinner was just spectacular. Would highly recommend due to quality of food and service.

Came here for my birthday and the service and food were beyond top notch. When you first arrive you’re greeted and told the story of “Prato borni” and greeted with champagne and offerings from the kitchen. This was a 3 hour meal but was absolutely delicious and we did the wine pairing.
