Tripleta‘s Puerto Rican Sandwiches are Popping Up at the Former Al’s Deli | Eater SF

"Lauded chef Aaron London opened a colorful, fast-casual spot in 2019 — Al’s Deli — known for falafel dogs and flamingo wallpaper, but it closed after less than a year, only a few days before March’s shelter-in-place; London paid the full rent while the space sat empty for months and the graffitied boards remained on the storefront." - Becky Duffett

AL’s Place Spinoff, AL’s Deli, Doing Delivery in SF | Eater SF

"Recently opened as a spinoff of Michelin-starred AL's Place, AL's Deli is rolling out delivery via Caviar; I can have chef Aaron London’s pita sandwiches and salads brought around the city, and for dinner they offer larger entrées such as shawarma-spiced rotisserie chickens." - Caleb Pershan

I recently stopped by for a quick lunch and decided to try their burgers, having heard they were pretty good. The deli itself has a nice, classic vibe, but the staff were not very helpful. The selection of sandwiches and other deli items looked promising, and the place was clean. However, the burgers were where things went a bit sideways. I ordered a supreme chicken sandwich ($11.00) w/fries ($3.00) and a Al’s burger ($11.50) cheese ($.70) and fries ($3.00), and while they were undeniably tasty – juicy, fresh toppings, and a decent bun – the price felt exorbitant. I was shocked when the total came to $29.20. For two basic burgers? That's pushing restaurant prices, not deli prices. The burgers were good, I won't deny that. But at that price point, I expected something truly exceptional, something that would justify the cost. They were good, not "wow." Essentially, I felt like I paid a premium for a standard deli burger. If the prices were more in line with what I'd expect from a deli, I'd happily give them a solid 5 stars. The quality was there, but the value wasn't. Pros: * Tasty burgers with fresh ingredients. * Clean and classic deli atmosphere. Cons: * Overpriced burgers. * Value for money is questionable. If you're willing to splurge on a decent burger, Al’s Deli might be worth a try. But if you're on a budget, you might want to consider finding a more reasonably priced burger elsewhere.

Google
Grabbed the breakfast pita, a little dry needing some sauce, but hearty. The self serve coffee station had a pitcher serving luke warm coffee, but overall I would go back.

Google
Wonderful place for breakfast. We stayed at an AirBnB in the same building and found this to be the best local place to get a really great standard breakfast. Huge portions and cheap prices. This platter was only $8. It fed myself, husband and toddler. The potatoes were grilled with onions and the eggs nice and fluffy. The sausage has almost a maple syrup taste to it that was really nice. We ended up eating there twice this week it was so good. The workers were so friendly and I loved how they treated my little one so kindly. Great mini diner.

Google
We ate here before the Browns game on Sunday. Staff was friendly, service was fast, and the seating area had plenty of seats available. No alcoholic beverages though if you're looking for that. They did an adjusted smaller menu to probably help move the crowd through quicker. I got a gyro and it was good. Good sized too. It came with a bag of chips for $12. A bit pricey, but not too bad for the downtown area. Not sure where you'd normally park since we parked a ways away to avoid the traffic on the way out. I'd definitely eat there again.

Google
Tasty food, relatively fast service. Higher price compared to chain sandwich places but quality seemed much better. Also nice attention to dietary restrictions. My son liked his turkey sandwich and I enjoyed my roasted veggie plate with tofu.

Stephanie E.

Google
Nothing special breakfast. Not bad but also you order then sit, pick it up when cooked, and also clean up yourself. Also menu seems less deli and more Mediterranean. I don’t dislike Mediterranean but prefer a deli just be a deli. Reasonably priced but not sure if visit again.

Google
Stopped here for breakfast Clean, bright, inviting. Good food, good coffee. We like finding locally owned places when we travel. This was a win.

Google
I got breakfast here while staying at the kimpton. Food was tasty and well worth the price

Yelp
Very clean and well appointed space with lots of natural light. The owner was working behind the counter and was so nice and funny. The regular coffee was very good... they had a couple of different options along with specialty coffees and cappuccino. My husband had the Al's breakfast which he loved and I had the fruit... it was fresh and delicious! ( The rest of the menu looked very appetizing also. ) I think we will eat here again before we leave Cleveland. I highly recommend this place... good food and coffee and really reasonable prices! Great downtown location. what is not to love.

Yelp
Toast barely toasted potatoes barely cooked never again!!! I only ordered this time because a coworker comes in every morning with food I question where from and ask her to bring me some, my mistake!

Yelp
It's been a while since I wrote a review of Al's. I've been dining here occasionally over the last nine years. Every visit has been an excellent experience with my coworkers. They have great staffing, they're friendly, and they're fast. I wonder why I don't visit more often. On this occasion, I requested a gyro wrap because I've been craving them lately. Their sandwiches and wraps are served with potato chips. I also got a fountain drink. They called my order number rather quickly. My gyro wrap was excellent. It was warm and very tasty. It had a good amount of meat on it. I'll be back for more soon!

Yelp
Owner is not compassionate. Also the food taste terrible. Sausage egg and cheese sandwich was not good. Sausage had horrible aftertaste.

Genna S.

Yelp
Quick service, and one of the best Reuben's I've ever had. I only wish they were open longer so I could try some of their other offerings!

Yelp
Man, I hate to give a local place a low review...so I'm rounding up a star. Yea, that disappointing. Let me fill you in +1 for friendly service -1 for LOUD and hard to understand system for order number pick up. +1 for cleanliness -1 for chicken schwarma wrap. Ugh. The chicken wasn't warm, this is the first time I've even seen lettuce on a schwarma wrap before, and no pickles. AND they changed me extra for wanting garlic sauce instead of tahini, and it was STILL DRY. This just made me sad. -1 for the sad, warm, floppy dill pickle on the side. +1 my neighbors sandwhich looked way better. His was piled high with meat (corned beef or pastrami?) and lots of fries. -1 for the cheap bag of chips that were included with mine. They were the saltiest thing I've ever tasted! How about some local...or at least midwestern chips? Something better than these salt licks. Overall they need a quality control overhaul. At least for the chips, pickle, hot sauce (a packet that is dyed red and is more vinegar than hot) and schwarma. I'd come back to try their breakfast as that is what people had told me to try, but man was hoping for a gooood schwarma! Middleastern specialties my foot.

Ashley M.

Yelp
It was just fine. I ordered a roast beef sandwich with a side of fries. The bread was dry and was pretty much what you get at the grocery store. The meat was good and fresh. Fries were seasoned well but not crispy at all. The number system was really loud and unpleasant. The service was nothing special but also not terrible. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this place if you are looking for anything super flavorful or special.

Yelp
We stopped into Al's prior to the St. Patrick's Day parade in downtown Cleveland. The location was perfect! Large windows facing out onto the parade route. Food was tasty and service was fast. Great choice.
google avatar

Yelp
Seriously good breakfast sandwich. Went with a bagel, egg, pepper jack and sausage and man this does not disappoint! Easy to order online with instant communication on when it will be ready. Walked in, grabbed off the shelf and walked out. Easy and tasty!

Yelp
In town from Maine for an ailing relative. Incredibly juicy corned beef, French fries so tasty and well seasoned, and the whole place had a great vibe. Highly recommend

Yelp
Was visiting Cleveland for business and tried this place for lunch as it was a couple of block from my hotel. I ordered a pastrami on white and coleslaw to go. Once I got back to my hotel room...I realized they actually gave me corned beef -- and it was not good. The bread was soaked through with grease. And absolutely nothing else on the sandwich but meat and bread. The coleslaw was meh. There are a lot of restaurant options in downtown Cleveland...and I wish I had tried a different one.
google avatar

Yelp
In town for some business and decided to try a local joint for breakfast. Had a pretty solid scrambled egg, ham, Swiss cheese burrito for breakfast. $8 for the burrito, another $2.50 for coffee. Good deal. Solid food. Not outstanding, but it's a corner deli, cheap, fast, good. Solid four stars.
google avatar

Maria-Elena T.

Yelp
I found this on Yelp by searching under breakfast sandwich. It did not disappoint! Place was well lit and spotlessly clean. The woman at the register greeted me upon entry smiling. My order came up quickly. The sandwich was hearty with lots of bacon. The eggs were scrambled and hot. Good cheese. The place had a steady stream of customers getting breakfast. They looked local and like regulars. The food was fresh. Would definitely come back here !
google avatar

Christina P.

Yelp
Sometimes you just want shwarma, you NEED shwarma, but you're stuck ar work. So you go tey out the nearest place that has shwarma. I trudged thru the rain to pick up my order, my shoes getting soaked thru. The things we do for food... I ordered the Shwarma Rolled and asked for garlic mayo to be added in. It wasn't bad but it wasn't the best I'd ever had. I wished the meat was better balanced with the pickled veggies. It seemed like it lacked a bit in both. But honestly, if you have a craving it's not a bad place to come.
google avatar

Dawn H.

Yelp
Al's deli is a hidden gem downtown. Everything is so fresh and I love their corn beef and roast beef. I wish their hours were longer. That's my only complaint.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
This place is everything you need it to be for a breakfast diner. Cheap, simple, good. It's not fancy or pretentious. It's just simple French toast or pancakes and eggs. Good hazelnut coffee and lovely service.

Timothy D.

Yelp
The veggie wrap is AWESOME, and friendly people. The potato salad had a nice flavor. Busy with Browns fans.
google avatar

Amy J.

Yelp
This is called a deli but they only have candy bars and gas station type convenience junk food. No sandwiches or deli items of any kind. Smells like weed inside, really dingy and gross.
google avatar

Sonia K.

Yelp
Picked up a bacon, egg, and cheese from here around 10am for a late breakfast. The portion was huge and came with plenty of toppings. The service was really quick as well. Would definitely come back and try more options!
google avatar

Steve M.

Yelp
Fantastic place to grab a lunch downtown. I work close by and this place is always high on my list if I was too lazy to pack a lunch that day. Amazing Mediterranean food options here as well as burgers and deli sandwiches. Prices are fine to me.
google avatar

Deb B.

Yelp
Really weak coffee...had to throw out my iced coffee. Got a bagel egg white sandwich, which was flavorless, despite it being on an everything bagel No hot sauce.ugh.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a tough one guys... Breakdown. I was #34 and folks #62 were getting served. They got a "1" for food service. I ordered a Shish Tawook Rolled chicken, tabouleh NO fries. GOT well seasoned fries, but I didn't want them and they put my Tabouleh IN my Shish Tawook. ..wrong! The "sandwich" was flavorful, but rather dry...not nearly enough garlic sauce. They got a "3" for that dish. The Stuffed Grape leaves sat for the 15 min I had to wait and I had to ask for hot ones... hmmm, yeah, so you guys get another "1" on that one. The taste earned a "5" , however!!!!! Served with Pita and yogurt sauce, yes a "5" It's clean and staff is pleasant.. hence , my score of 3. I'LL give them another try... I truly believe they could earn a 5 once I provide feedback to the Manager. Stay tuned, because you know I keep it real! BTW, by time I left, they were on #96 in 45 minutes!

Yelp
Right off the bat: great customer service! This place gets stupidly busy for lunch, but the kitchen staff cranks the food out fast. Prices are actually on the low side considering where they are downtown. Have yet to have any menu item that was not excellent, and as importantly, made correctly. Falafel rolled features wonderfully crispy falafel. House made roast beef and pastrami are delicious, though can be dry at times. Their daily specials are worth checking out, and they feature a different pasta offering daily. Eventually I will try their breakfast offerings, so can't report on them now.
google avatar

Jon R.

Yelp
Ran in to grab a quick late breakfast/lunch for the first time. I've heard many good things about the food and the service of Al's from friends who work downtown and go there for lunch. The inside is super nice and clean. The natural light from all of the windows is perfect and brightens up the place. The person behind the counter taking our order was as friendly and nice as one could be which I greatly appreciate. Stuck with the standard breakfast sandwich with sausage and on an everything bagel. I could eat a breakfast sandwich/wrap/bagel at anytime during the day as it's one of my favorite foods. I'm going to have to add Al's breakfast sandwich to my list of "go-to's". Just the right amount of egg, it's not overloaded with cheese, the sausage covered the entire bagel so each bite had every topping, and the bagel was fresh and toasted to perfection. Must go.

Ashlee I.

Yelp
Stopped in for breakfast before a Cleveland Browns game. The food was amazing, the restaurant was very clean, the staff was friendly, and service was quick! Will definitely return!
google avatar

Thang T.

Yelp
As a downtown resident, I walk by this diner very, very frequently and it always catches my eye. Especially on weekdays around breakfast and lunchtime, this place is seriously packed with people. On my visit here, I ordered your standard breakfast platter--eggs, bacon, toast, with an iced coffee. All in all, I found this to be a very standard meal. Not bad, not outstanding, just average. Service was solid and ambience was light and fun. If I did come back here, honestly it would be more out of convenience than for the food.

Michael K.

Yelp
I came in for breakfast on my last day in Cleveland. The food was fine but it's hard to screw up bacon and eggs. The ambiance was clean and minimalist, so no complaints there. The reason for two stars was because the service was poor and the staff were extremely rude. They acted bothered that I was there to give them my business. It's the little things that make an experience what it is, and based on my time here, the two stars were very generous.
google avatar

Stella K.

Yelp
Wouldn't it be great if we could give half star ratings? This place definitely would benefit from a half star to get it up to a 3.5 star rating. Like most places the vegetarian options were slim pickings. I settled for a quesadilla sans chicken and was told I could substitute the chicken for extra veggies such as spinach and/or mushrooms. We went as a large group for lunch and because the deli was so crowded, we weren't able to sit together. However the wait time for food was pretty reasonable. I thoroughly enjoyed my veggie quesadilla which had great cheese pull. From what I gathered from the group, the pastrami sandwich as well as the steak and cheese were nothing special.

Alex B.

Yelp
I got what I thought was a safe bet. Their lunch special. It was a wrap with turkey, lettuce, tomato, avocado, and ranch. Not even 30 minutes after I ate it I started to not feel well and an hour later I was leaving work early because I felt sick. Great people that work there and great service but man did that lunch mess my stomach up. Probably won't return any time soon.
google avatar

Melanie C.

Yelp
Sent here for a quick bite by the concierge at my hotel. Nice clean restaurant with a ton of choices for breakfast and lunch. This is an order at the counter and pick up your food when it is ready kinda place. I thought it was a restaurant with table service. However, I did enjoy the food and would go back again to try other menu items.
google avatar

Ron R.

Yelp
Overall good place. Eggs, sausage, bacon, and coffee were great for breakfast. Club sandwich was very good for lunch. Lady at the register was friendly and remembered me after second phone in order. Placed looked ok to eat in, but just got takeout to eat in hotel room. Would recommend going here and will definitely go back on next trip to Cleveland.
google avatar

Amy M.

Yelp
We ordered breakfast sandwiches online on our way out of town and it was ready in 10 minutes. Very friendly staff, place is clean and all our sandwiches were really good. Food was fresh.

Scott V.

Yelp
Let me say this Al's is all about customer service. On Saint Patty's day I suddenly needed corn beef and Ryebread. In a panic I called and Al answered. I Explained what my predicament was and he said "no problem my friend come on by and pick it up. "Just like my experiences dining there. The food was excellent. and the service was friendly. Thanks for bailing me out Al !!!

Island L.

Yelp
Went in to look at the menu, because I was taking too much time a older gentleman came from behind the counter and asked could he help me. Just based upon his body language I could tell that he didn't truly want to help. Now note I had on Decent entire and I don't look like I'm homeless so I don't understand with the abrupt confrontation was about.
google avatar

Quinton F.

Yelp
There's something about his place. It appears to be your typical no frills, soup, sandwich, wrap, pita, diner, but there is something uniquely charming about it. I was definitely charmed my first time there. I went in at lunchtime, which was moderately busy. I didn't mind the wait. The person that took my order was a SWEETHEART. She tolerates me while I fumbled looking at the board for my selection, remarked that she knew I was new because she KNOWS MOST REGULARS, and told me about the free item club. I floated over to wait for my food to be prepared. I'd give the quality of the food a solid score too. I look forward to trying other items off the menu. I'm. a big fan of the deli food they offer, as well as the middle eastern selections and salads.
google avatar

Wen F.

Yelp
I'd say the breakfast Omelet is about a 3 star but the home fries were delicious. The service was friendly and quick so I bumped the overall to a 4. I needed quick breakfast and was in the area and didn't feel like paying the $20 that was being charged at the hotel. I stopped by Al's and ordered an Omelet combo. The Omelet was ok, did the job but not as good as places like ihop, maybe it's just me that prefers the inside out type of omelet. I also tried to cut a few calories so I didn't get cheese, maybe which would have helped the omelet a little. I just thought it was a little bland and the water from the vegetables leaked into the egg. I did love the home fries; it wasn't too salty but had great seasoning and a crispy outside with a warm soft inside. It came with toast and condiments like butter, jelly, and ketchup. A pretty good place for breakfast if you are in the area, but I think I might stick to a b'fast sandwich next time.

Crystal C.

Yelp
The best breakfast and lunch spot downtown is open for takeout! You can pre-order and pick up or walk in and order. As always, everything here is fresh and delicious. I love their variety of food and especially enjoy their middle eastern specialties. My favorites include the turkey wrap, apple walnut salad, and the cold quinoa salad. I'm always impressed with their customer service, especially in these challenging times.

Yelp
Reasons I love Al's Deli: 1) They are conveniently located in the 1717 building 2) The people working here are the kindest, most pleasant people, ever! 3) It is very clean and you can see that 4) Their breakfast is to die for I was waiting for Al's Deli to make its debut since August, so when they finally opened, I had to try! I was greeted by smiling faces and felt so welcomed. I ordered breakfast that morning, and the rest is history. I have Al's breakfast about once or twice a week, I just love their home fries and everything is made fresh to order, so your food is actually hot, even 10 minutes later. I have tried other dishes, but my favorite thing to order from here is the breakfast menu and if I had to give a recommendation for lunch, it would be the Philly chicken sub, ah so delicious! Wonderful people work here and the owners are around often, and remember me when I come in, which is really nice. I wish they were open a little later. They are only open until 7pm weekdays, 2pm Saturday, and closed on Sunday.
google avatar

Ron A.

Yelp
Stopped by Al's for the first time on my way to meeting. Had a double order of Low Fare (2 Scrambled eggs white on a bagel with seasoned fruit). Very tasty and not bland. Sat in the little dining area and embraced the warm inside before heading out into the cold Cleveland morning.
google avatar

Brad L.

Yelp
A great deli with awesome employees! I was in Cleveland for business for the first time, and I was looking for a quick place to grab dinner within quick walking distance of my hotel. I found this place right across the street. It was a quick and chilly walk over. The Assistant Manager greeted me upon entering and gave me recommendations. I chose the corned beef reuben. The sandwich was amazing along with my dark roast coffee. The chef even came out to inquire if I was pleased with my food. Overall, I love this place, and I will be returning if I'm ever back in the city.
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
Al's is a cool lunch/breakfast style deli place in downtown Cleveland. They close at 3pm during the week. What I really like about Al's is the level of customization you can do with your meal. You can pretty much do whatever, no bread no cheese, etc whatever your diet requires. Very flexible and that's what I like. Nice place.
google avatar

Jonathan C.

Yelp
This is in route to the Rock Hall of Fame The staff is very friendly, that's the most important thing right. The food (breakfast) is great, that's the second most important thing right. We came here to grab some grub before seeing the Hall of Fame. The outside looks like a quaint little mom and pops. It's right next to Dublin Donuts, but the outside charm led us here. When we walked in l, we were pretty impressed. It's a really decent sized place. Don't let the outside fool you. The atmosphere is very welcoming, it makes you want to stay and dine in. The huge windows bring plenty of outside light- the upbeat music makes even the most grumpy morning person want to dance. The service is quick, there's plenty of specials, I recommend the TWO/TWO/TWO for the breakfast lovers out there.
google avatar

Douglas Robert B.

Yelp
I should know better. I am a New York Jew and pastrami is in my blood. This pastrami was some of the worst I ever had. It was not sliced well and tasted like wood shavings. Manhattan Clam Chowder was extremely salty. In fact, salt was the predominant taste. My friends 'grilled' ham and cheese on Texas Toast. If warming the ham over a Bic lighter is grilled, then it was grilled. Texas Toast was as exciting warmed over French Toast. Can pass on a return visit.
google avatar

Chris P.

Yelp
The name deli is a little misleading. This is actually hands down the best lunch place in Cleveland. The food is always great, the people who work there are always nice, and the service is fast. They have great salads, awesome gyros, interesting specials, and occasionally I treat myself to their baklava, almost as good as the Greek mom in my old neighbor used to make!

Stacey O.

Yelp
A very nice, clean restaurant with delicious food. Very fast and friendly service. My husband had the corned beef and I had the chicken shawarma wrap. We both enjoyed our meal, very tasty and fresh.
google avatar

Alyssa D.

Yelp
So good! GREAT value. My mom and I split the falafel and the pastrami and corn beef Andre's Masterpiece! It's kind a bare-bones inside and my first impression was a little bit unsure of how the food would be. But we were both pleasantly surprised! Food was fantastic! And the service was very very friendly. Thanks for a great lunch!

Yelp
Really enjoyed the pastrami when I visited Cleveland a few weeks ago and plan on stopping for another one if I ever make it back to Cleveland.

Ken R.

Yelp
Best breakfast croissant ever. You will not be disappointed. Eggs, bacon, sausage and cheese. A complete breakfast.
