24 Essential Bars and Breweries to Know in Birmingham, Alabama

"There’s always something going on at LGBTQ staple Al’s on 7th, from drag shows and battles, karaoke, and watch parties to themed dance nights. The decor is simple and divey, because the energy from the staff and patrons is all that’s needed to create an amiable atmosphere. Most events focus around the indoor mirrored stage, but there’s also a smaller outdoor stage on the patio." - Sarra Sedghi

Al’s is such a great place to go for good drinks and a good time! I’ve been when it’s packed and I’ve been when it’s dead. We had a blast both times!! The owner was super nice and accommodating when we went on Halloween night. On weekends or during pride, it is THE place to be! My wife and I have loved our experiences here!

As soon as I walked into the establishment, I felt welcomed. It was a Friday night and not as busy as usual, the other places on the strip seem to be more popping. However; I looked up. The drag shows and quickly noticed that this was the best stage. After exploring around the area, I spoke to a few locals and headed right back to Al on seventh. The vibe was immaculate. The bartender service was attentive, long pours and cheap. I would 1000% come here again if I was ever given the opportunity.

Good atmosphere with wonderful staff! Always feel welcome here! Special shout out about safely and security here, you have to bring current ID that will be scanned before entry! Thanks Mark!!

OMG! No tables to sit at to drink you drink and watch the show, huge mistake who wants to hold their drink all night with no place to sit it down. Trust me whoever thought this was a good idea was wrong , I bet they aren’t selling as many drinks . We were visiting from Atlanta Saturday night 12-28-24 there isn’t any bars out here that would make that mistake. Tuesday they announced a new yrs count down 😂 the crowd will be only tiny twinks that can stand for hours. Until the tables come back we won’t go back. Dumb mistake

In my time at Al’s I have always felt accepted, loved and cared for. Mark and his team make safety a top concern, both physically and socially. When you’re at Al’s, you’re family!

If you come here on a weekend, you will be greeted by the same unfriendly ladies who take your cover. You will watch a drag show (that lasts too long) and you’ll see the same routines they did last week. I think folks just want to dance some times, but the show always takes precedence.

Yelp
Really great bar. Fun atmosphere, cool air conditioned inside, fantastic patio & friendly service. We came here the evening of the Pride Parade & had a very nice time. Felt very safe & welcomed. Nice selection of spirits. They even had a food truck on site. Thanks for a fabulous time, Al's!

Yelp
Have been here a few times for some nights out, and once for a drag show with a special guest. The place is kind of what I would consider to be "bare bones". Not a lot of seating, not a lot of frills. The staff is pretty friendly and the drinks are reasonably priced. They have seltzers and hard ciders as options alongside a full bar and beer. On a particularly busy night I ordered a seltzer, a hard cider, and two vodka red bulls and it came to $25 which I felt was pretty good. Cover is about $5 unless there is a special event. My biggest beef with this place and one of the reasons I don't come here often is the bathroom situation. There are two gender neutral bathrooms, single stall. And that's it. So when events are going on and there are 200+ people inside, the line can be absolutely obscene. Most recently we waited probably 30 minutes. That being said, overall a decent place to go.

Yelp
Al's is the best!!! Probably my favorite gay friendly bar in the city! The staff is friendly and fun, and you can catch drag shows, sing karaoke, or play bingo several nights a week! The patrons are friendly as well! They have a decent beer selection and their mixed drinks are great! It's a bit divey and rough around the edges, but I think that just adds to their charm. Go check them out!

Yelp
I came here Halloween with some friends as part of our bar hopping, and we had a great time. The bartenders here were so friendly and personable! I got a lemon drop shot and amaretto sour which were perfectly made. They have both an inside/outside-ish area and are very spacious!

Yelp
I came here on a Saturday night for my first drag show, and I had a great time! They have a few performers that have multiple performances to songs from different decades of music, which definitely appeals to the diverse crowd that comes to see these shows. They had limited seating since some were for VIP reservations and a few cocktail tables for your group to stand around. From personal experience, I would say try to avoid the cocktail table near the restrooms if you can. They do open up the dance floor and the stage after the show, so you can unleash your inner drag queen.

Yelp
My buddies and I were in town for a convention and really wanted a wonderful night out to relax and have fun apart from our meeting. We first went to the neighborhood to go to another bar, but when that wasn't quite what we wanted we asked another patron their recommendation, and they said "Al's most definitely!" We went, and did not regret it! We had a *blast* at Al's! The bartenders were sexy, quick, and skilled (and it was packed!). The layout of the place offered distinct areas including a huge patio, great for different moods or interests. The drag show was one of the best I've seen - and I've lived in some major cities. I think it's fair to say Al's On Seventh showed these travelers the very best Birmingham has to offer!

Yelp
Nice local gay bar in BHAM we were in town for the night while traveling across the country and wanted to find a fun and safe space to have a drink and they even had a viewing partying for RPDR Finale! Would recommend any of the local beers or there slushees. If I ever find myself back in BHAM I'd definitely return! ‍

Yelp
One of the more popular gay bars downtown. Al's attracts an older crowd and in general it's a very mature and chill atmosphere. The bartenders here have generally been super friendly and personable. If you're into billiards, they do have a pool table in the main room by the bar. There is also a theatre located within where viewing parties are held as well as drag shows. Overall, it's a pretty relaxing place to just hangout and grab a drink.

Yelp
Mark, Tim, Brandon, and the rest of the gang do a great service to the community. Great drag shows. Sunday Funday supporting the softball league. Excellent DJ. Fun place to gather with friends.

Yelp
If your looking for a nice place to hang with friends, watch a drag show or do karaoke this is a great place. They have a large covered patio that also has a bar open on busy nights. Bartenders and staff are very friendly. My favs or Tim and Brandon. When it comes to alcohol they pretty much have it..including wine. Mark does a great job managing and it definitely shows. If your from our of town and looking for a gay bar definitely come here. Drag shows are always entertaining.

Yelp
I always have such a good time at Al's. They have a fairly diverse clientele with some nice staff. I love the drag shows! Sometimes we're lucky enough to get a table upfront where you can really take everything in. They layout of the place is also really great. When you enter Al's you have a fairly large bar to your left with some pool tables towards the back. Veer to the right and there's another seating area with another bar that prefaces where they do the drag shows. Walk straight forward and you can enter there outside patio. The patio also has a bar but it's rarely ever open during the colder weather. The outside patio is very large and a great place to grab a smoke or escape the hustle and bustle of the inside crowd.

Yelp
This is a fun and cool place to hang out. This is my favorite place to do karaoke. The drinks are reasonably priced and they keep them coming rather quickly. I like the vibe here too.

Yelp
A Great and Fun bar. Had a very good time Friday night. The drag shows were FABULOUS and the bartenders very friendly......and they pour a very stiff drink. Will definitely go back the next time I'm in Birmingham !!!!!

Yelp
Al's is a place that you can go to get a pretty good price on a drink. They have karaoke some nights, which is always fun. I love the back patio and usually spend most of my time there. They charge a $5 cover on the weekends, when they have drag shows. Since most of the same performers can be found at Our Place for free, we don't generally pay the cover here. Overall, a good place to hang out with friends!

Yelp
I always have a good time when I come here. Great karaoke three days a week, good drinks, cute bartenders, a newly constructed dance floor and the best drag shows in the city hands down. The Dreamcast drag shows have proven to be a big hit on Friday and Saturday nights, perfect for bachelorette parties and boys-night-out gatherings. There's even a spacious patio with HD TVs and an extra bar opened on weekends. And when softball season rolls around, SUNDAY FUNDAY -- with its catered free food, cornhole tourneys, flip cup and endless fun -- brings all the boys and girls to the yard. Definitely Birmingham's premier gay bar.

Yelp
I have mixed reviews about this place. This place has gone through several name changes.... the drinks are resonably priced and a ok place to go with friends. I do not like to go as much on weekends because its too crowded and they charge a cover charge. I know they have drag shows on the weekends but have not really seen any there latley.

Yelp
I'm a bit outraged to pay a $6 cover charge to enter an EMPTY bar unless there is professional entertainment. ...And no local drag queens don't count as professional entertainment.

Yelp
Best place ever!!!! Best drag shows, best bartenders, best ambiance!!! And it's clean!!! This is a nice place! Great clientele! It's just awesome!

Yelp
This bar/club has gone through a few name changes since I moved to Birmingham 6 years ago-Lakeshore Yacht Club, Joe's On Seventh, and now it's most recent incarnation, Al's on Seventh. While there wasn't much change between Lakeshore and Joe's, there was a tremendous amount of change (at least in decor) from Joe's to Al's. It's much sleeker, more inviting, good use of interior and exterior space. There's a covered back patio area for smokers now that Birmingham has gone smoke free-even as a smoker myself I appreciate that. Bathrooms usually seem fairly clean, I really like that they're 1 person per bathroom at a time. Drinks are moderately priced, pours are controlled (which has its plusses and minuses in my opinion). There's a fairly decent sized dance floor and stage area (for those bold enough to be more in the spotlight). My biggest grievance-and this, sadly, is not limited to just Al's in the Birmingham area-the drag shows go on FOR.EVER. And ever. I'd be less inclined to call that a minus if A/ the drag queens were spectacular and B/ there were several different performers vs. usually only 2 or 3 (the same 2 or 3 doing at least 2 songs). The truth is, the performers are typically mediocre, at best-I've not seen one yet that has knocked my socks off. On the whole, I think this is a great place to go, hang out, conversate with friends, have a few cocktails and do some fun people watching. Just be sure to head outside once the drag show starts.
