San Francisco's Best New Restaurants Of 2015

"Al’s place straight-up rules. The plates are beautiful, the food is creative without being overly fancified, and it all tastes amazing. Better still, the seafood-centric spot deep in the Mission is unintimidating and welcoming. The wine they keep in buckets near all the tables doesn’t hurt either." - max child taylor abrams

Google
I like an old fashion diner style eatery but this place really didn’t do it for me. I had to sit at the front counter on a stool which I hate because the table section of the diner was closed. The country fried steak was nothing spectacular and the consistency of the gravy was too thick for a country fried steak in my opinion. The best part of the meal was the hash browns that were made in sort of a scalloped potatoes type of way which were absolutely perfect. But I’m always willing to give a place a second chance so I will be back again.

Google
Great place in the neighborhood! No frills old school diner serving up all your typical breakfast fares.

Tommy Le

Google
Such a great diner style vibe. Larry was working the kitchen and also ended up ringing me up, was such a treat to chat with him. If you’re looking for a hearty, no frills breakfast with everything done great, this is where you want to go! Quick service and freshly made food. Omelette especially hit the spot. Visiting from Texas and I had a packed schedule and was able to get in, enjoy a meal, and finish the rest of my day fueled up.

Google
Prompt friendly service, delicious breakfast, and super affordable prices! One bad note is that the soap is actually Fabuloso and feels quite drying and toxic to the hands; I felt bad giving a bad review just because of that, hoping they'll read this and get real soap (if the issue hasn't been fixed by the time I go there again, unfortunately I'll have to change my rating to 4/5 or lower).

Sarah Parsons

Google
Great, classic, affordable diner food in the Mission. Came here on a weekday and it was pretty dark and dingy inside but the owner and staff were super friendly and kind. Enjoyed the food and service. Not too greasy and tasty.

Michael Parsley

Google
Idk how this place has semi good reviews. The food was really disappointing and bland. The check was like 25% higher than the listed menu price, and had 0 itemization/explanation

Google
This is a neighborhood staple! The kind of place you’ll come every weekend. The service is good, food is delicious and in decent portion.

Google
Had a great experience at Al’s this weekend. Huge portions and great value. This diner is really a gem and rare nowadays. Their hash brown is probably the best hash brown I’ve ever had! The owner is super nice and friendly. I’m so glad I stumbled in here and will be returning soon

Yelp
This place just makes me happy! Old school SF vibes. My mom used to bring me here when I was a kid, and I've kept coming back over the years. Just grabbed breakfast to-go, and it hit the spot, like always. When I'm craving something simple but delicious, this is my spot. The portions are solid, the prices aren't crazy and I'm so glad they're still serving up deliciousness :)

Yelp
I'd been eyeing this place for a good while and always remained on the fence about giving it a try. I liked the old-school vibe and what I saw on the menu, but it was always empty despite the cavernous size. I finally rolled in for breakfast one morning excited to try what the menu described as "fresh" corned beef hash. I've not found a good place for corned beef hash since Manor Coffee Shop in West Portal closed down. I am picky I suppose, because real corned beef hash, when made with distinct shreds of corned beef is a top 5 breakfast for me, whereas canned corn beef hash in its pink-gray slurry form is about as edible to me as dog food. Well, their hash is dog food alright, despite what the menu claims, but maybe others might not mind it. What was even less excusable were my over easy eggs cooked with snotty whites on both sides. I don't mind a runny yolk, but come on. If your diner cook can't fry an egg to order, what are you even doing here? All this with an under brewed cup of joe in an otherwise empty restaurant. This is a neat space and I'm sure the location has a history, but the people running it are doing a beyond indifferent job.

Kammy W.

Yelp
I was disappointed that the waffle was not fresh, it was from the freezer, and it was not toasted through so it was cold inside. They were attentive, but I didn't want them to warm it up since I didn't want to eat a frozen waffle. Husband had an omlet and said that it was good. Coffee was not great.

Yelp
This is a nice breakfast find for myself! All the portions were perfect and fairly priced. This isn't as good for breakfast as other diners but it definitely hits when you're starving in the morning! The corned beef hash and potatoes were cooked to perfection, it was crispy and soft! My wife loved their fluffiness of their pancakes but a little bit of vanilla would go a long way. Finally, the omelette was delicious and has everything you'd expect and not over cooked.
google avatar

Yelp
Good old time diner breakfast! Delicious chicken fried steak, hash browns, pancakes and corned beef hash. Service is traditional diner style- if it's crowded you wait- felt nice to slow down, not be rushed and anticipate the meal to come. Looking forward to our next visit soon!

Yelp
On my visit to Al's Super Cafe on Mission for breakfast, I had a great experience. The cozy ambiance and friendly staff made me feel welcome. The omelettes and corn beef hash with eggs stood out - they were flavorful and perfectly cooked. Despite a bit of a wait during busy times, the delicious dishes made it worthwhile. If you're looking for a delightful breakfast, Al's Super Cafe is worth considering for their tasty omelettes and corn beef hash with eggs. Plus points for the tasty house made breakfast salsa

Yelp
Local neighborhood Cafe shop with an extensive breakfast and lunch menu, plenty of seating and reasonable prices ($10-15 avg. meal per person). The people who run this place are really sweet. I got sidetracked with my order forgoing my usual egg scrambles for a tex mex potatos with a side of sunnyside up eggs. It wasn't heavily seasoned. Could have benefitted from doing roasted potatoes or something that gave the potatoes a bit more crispy texture rather than slicing it like potatoes au gratin. Great service, even better fresh squeezed orange juice.

Yelp
I have not visited the cafe yet, but I order their brunch via Grubhub regularly. Price is reasonably cheap. Food is tasty and portions are decent enough. This place is more like a diner-ish type of brunch place than some place fancy with the girls. But I love diner-ish fares!!! Allow some time to get your food thru Grubhub. They're quite popular and gets A LOT of orders!!! And be specific on the order notes as to any specific omissions because of food allergies and such. They do read and follow the notes!!! Keep up with the good food in my Grubhub orders!!!

Amy A.

Yelp
Just a lovely classic diner! The service was very friendly and the food was super reasonably priced and hit the spot. I especially liked the pancakes.

B. K.

Yelp
Food is consistently good and reasonable in price.. too bad the millennials don't come in from next door, but good for us so we don't have to wait!! We're bringing our friends here!
google avatar

Yelp
The food is delicious! No frills kind of diner and I love the old hollywood decor. I have been going here since the early 2000s and Larry the owner treats his customers like family! Highly recommend the French toast and fish n chips!

Yelp
This is my new favorite breakfast delivery joint. I'm surprised Al's doesn't have a higher Yelp score. Overall would do again! ORDERED: Corned Beef Hash w Over Easy Eggs + Coffee. WINNERS: Corned Beef Hash comes from a can, fried up in a smash patty and predictably good. Eggs were cooked over easy with yolky center just as ordered. The included hash browns were a winner, chipped/shredded potatoes like in gratins and griddle fried home style. EHH: Coffee was just MID but not terrible.

Yelp
You want good food and a real diner? Come here to Al's Super Cafe! Definitely real old S.F. in the Mission. Breakfast is busy and lunch you can still find a seat. Try and I'll be back!

Yelp
Amazing lil diner. Not too many real diners left in America like this. The food tasted great and insanely cheap for SF. We were given a homemade salsa (that I wasn't expecting haha) which was so tasty. Service was awesome and quick, nice people there. The vibes inside are super cooky but fun, a lot of frank Sinatra memorabilia all over. Def recommend if you like casual diners.

Yelp
Don't expect a fancy place with all bells and whistles. Menu offering many breakfasts, salads, hamburgers, and other delectable items. I've had one of the omelets, fish and chips, hamburgers, and recently pork chops and eggs. Nice portions and deliriously prepared. The owner is very nice and makes you feel welcome. Courteous service. Coffee could be a little stronger.

Theresa C.

Yelp
A SF institution! This place has become our go-to quick, easy, and delicious diner food breakfast! Very affordable!

Yelp
This is probably a good neighborhood spot, but it's probably not worth going out of your way to eat here for the perfectly average, fine food. RESERVATIONS Made for 12:30pm on a Sunday a day in advance, but it was completely unnecessary. It was empty except for one other diner. It was apparently much busier earlier that morning. THE SERVICE This is a one-man show (chef, host, server was all one person!). He was really nice and was doing a lot. Our food still came out quickly and was good. Probably because there wasn't more staff, he did not check for poof of vaccination. KID-FRIENDLINESS There was a single high chair in the restaurant. Lucky we got it! THE COST $53.25 before tips for brunch for 3 adults, 2 babies. THE FOOD * French Toast + fruit ($8.25 + $2) - 3.5 stars Perfectly fine! * Mediterranean Scrambler ($10.95) - 3.5 stars

Aria B.

Yelp
The manager/owner at the entrance was rude, egoistic man with zero people skills. No wonder the restaurant was almost empty during peak brunch hours on a Saturday.

Genesis A.

Yelp
AMAZING FOOD !!!!!!!!!! THE BEST MOM AND POPS CAFE !!! Please continue to support small shops like this one ! The owner was such a sweet old man ! This shop has been here since 1942 !!

Rick L.

Yelp
Great place to go to. Completely unpretentious. Old style diner feel. Great prices. Exceptional omelets(try the veggie omelet),.

Yami P.

Yelp
Very cozy diner with good diner food, plus the staff are very nice as well. Has some nostalgic vibes too. 10/10!
google avatar

Lj L.

Yelp
No bells and whistles but who needs that when you have great food and seriously decent prices? The owner is such a great guy and everyone there has been super nice. Whenever anyone is visiting I always take them here and everyone has loved it. Trust me, check it out.
google avatar

Amanda L.

Yelp
Great family friendly place with reasonable prices and very friendly staff! We love bringing our toddler here since it's very relaxed. Food is standard diner fare and very tasty, especially the home made hot sauce.

Alexandria C.

Yelp
Do not recommend! Owner cursed me & friends out pointed his finger in my face and told us to get out. Bathroom is disgusting, kitchen was dirty, staff in kitchen wasn't wearing gloves. Service was horrible!
google avatar

Rosemary K.

Yelp
Al's is my favorite diner in SF! Never disappoints, good service, great food, chill ambiance. I'll always recommend people go here if they haven't already.
google avatar

Annie B.

Yelp
As soon as I stepped in, smiles and greetings followed by this old cute asian man! The cafe itself looks like the 80s, very vintage, and you can tell it serves locals! We were seated immediately and served with coffee. I got the french toast with fruit, and my friends got pancakes, bacon, eggs, and toast. my french toast was deliciously cinnamon-ey, and pancakes were fluffy!! The man made sure our food was great and that our coffee cups were always full. Enjoyed this lil gem that I found! Will definitely come back!! :)
google avatar

Moon D.

Yelp
Do you like greasy spoon diners with long counters that exude nostalgic Americana without being explicit about it ? Then you'd probably like this place, too. Sat at the counter, drank coffee, and ate a chicken fried steak. It was awesome!

Obeey D.

Yelp
food was good, hot chocolate was terrible. hot water is what they give you pretty much. ik its not that big of a deal, but to me IT IS because why is it hot chocolate so hard for some places, why wouldnt it be a big deal? im not paying $3 for hot water, and the food aint that good for me to skip over it so please FIX EHHHTTT
google avatar

B L.

Yelp
Old school diner with straight forward delicious food that are reasonably priced. Do not judge the chicken fried steak by its look, it's much more tasty than it appears. I also love how running and slimey my sunny side up eggs were, exactly the way I love them. -1 star since the toast was medicore

Neeya L.

Yelp
First time experience and my last experience. Over the weekend my friends and I purchased 4 mimosas. While we were waiting the owner walked up to our table and asked If we had intentions on going next door "four chairs" we said yes at some point. Immediately he started screaming at us & told our party that wasn't right that we were going to go next door. We asked him to calm down because we didn't know why he was so upset if we were paying for drinks at his business. After he made a scene, we didn't feel welcomed and got up to leave. He screamed "no, you're going to pay for these drinks" mind you the drinks never made it to our table. We told him no, after this experience & he called us "mother fuckers" and told us to leave. In all honesty his temper cost him a sell and he will continue to lose business by acting this way to guest. I will never come back and will never recommend this place ever.

Bryan S.

Yelp
Another awesome breakfast the French toast is good with or without fresh fruit.this place is my go too for breakfast

Yesenia P.

Yelp
I love this place so much I've basically been coming here for years! growing up i've always enjoyed the food here. Totally recommend the service is good ! delicious food. 10/10 !

Vivian V.

Yelp
This place was a disappointment, should've gone to the place next door. We were overcharged, the place was dark and gloomy and the food was ok. We ordered the Pancake delight, the 2 eggs any style with bacon, an extra side of hash browns and 2 coffees and an orange juice. Note: Do not get the coffee it is watered down! At most the bill should've been $30 based on the menu prices but we got a $40 bill. Despite all that we tipped a small amount and the reaction from the (presumed) owner was uncalled for. He took the signed receipt walked off but then stopped in his tracks to comment about the tip, as if it was too small. We're not coming back. Will try out the place next door, it was packed and food looked good.

N B.

Yelp
On my route of breakfast / brunch spots; this place has always had an authenticity that other nouveau diner places aspire to. I ordered the steak and eggs today, and I got a steak that any restaurant would be proud to serve. USDA Prime, done just the way I ordered; perfectly prepared and seasoned. Way better than I expected, and worth every penny. It was so good that I tried some A.1 sauce, and the A.1 made it worse, not better. Most places, when you order steak and eggs, the understanding is that you get some Filet of Shoe steak with no apologies. They can do this at Al's Super Cafe, but I highly endorse their real steak. Next time I'm ready for a steak, this is where I'm coming. Bring an appetite.
google avatar

Lefteris M.

Yelp
Basic yet impressive. Don't believe the stars. If you're looking for the real diner experience you ll love it. Service with a smile and a chicken fried steak to die for.
google avatar

Nicholas M.

Yelp
I've been going to Al's for at least a decade. I am born and raised in San Francisco. I ordered a $6.50 scramble, added sausage $3.00 and a Coke $2.00. That's it. I was with my girlfriend and we wanted to split the Coke but we're told we would be charged twice to split a soda. I agreed and ordered the soda for my GF and did not have any of it. The bill came and it was $18+. Am I cheap, yes, but these assholes are price gouging. I disputed the bill verbally and Al said the menu doesn't reflect the prices any longer and the sales tax was $2.95. I have an accounting background and in no world are you paying 2.95 sales tax for a bill around $20. I tipped like hell and got the fuck out of there. As a long time patron here, I say go anywhere else. So bummed, used to be a favorite.

Yelp
Incredible Spinach Benedict (or maybe it was Florentine?) super super nice owner, try and chat with him if you can, he has tons of cool stories of the history of the place. Interesting Soju Bloody Mary's too.
google avatar

Sam Y.

Yelp
I met up a friend here for a quick breakfast. No complaints as the food was hot and what I would expect for typical diner fare. The staff was quick and easy to deal with, no complaints as well. +1 for hash browns containing actual pieces of fried crispy potato
google avatar

Mary J.

Yelp
literally the best mimosa i've ever had in my life and good food larry is so nice love this place !!!

Jasmine L.

Yelp
If you're just looking for something pretty to put on your insta, go somewhere else. Looking to avoid a long wait? Don't feel like being surrounded by a bunch of hipsters? This is the no frills, classic, greasy spoon you're looking for. Solid breakfast. Tasty. Exactly what I wanted. Nothing more. Staff was attentive, but not overly attentive. I'll be back.

Rika A.

Yelp
Great food, came last week and ordered the chicken fried steak. AMAZING. Just came in today and had the Tex-Mex potatoes and the flavors were melting on my tongue. The guy there is also cool asf. Definitely great for breakfast
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing experience - very friendly and warm! The Asian chef is great! Food's great - classic diner experience. The restaurant is filled with history and memorabilia.

This place was CRACKING!! My vegetarian omelette and my babydaddys egg breakfast with hash browns was on point! Everything was crispy, especially my bacon love it like that , fresh and delicious we will definitely be back! I wish would have been able to sit down but it's understandable!

Yelp
I wonder if most people walking by on Mission even notice that Laurel and Hardy are the faces prominently displayed on the signage for Al's Cafe... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8tKfvKhysY&feature=related Walk into this authentic old-time diner and step into somebody's idea of a glamorous past... the owner has attempted a classic Hollywood-type diner with movie memorabilia in every nook and cranny of this place. Autographed movie-star photos fill the walls, and there are celebrity look-alike dolls on shelves in the back. Everything is rather faded, and the place feels a bit musty and rickety, but it somehow survives in a "Sunset Boulevard" kind of way. I've walked by this place many times, but it's always closed since they're only open until 3PM on weekdays. I happen to be in the neighborhood today, so I thought I should give it a try since it's too kitschy not to. Orange formica and plastic red flowers are all around. It turns out to be a solid greasy spoon, sort of like a roadside diner on Route 66 somewhere past Kingman, Arizona, circa 1946. Works for me especially since I'm a movie trivia sponge. I can actually appreciate an autographed picture of Kim Novak next to my table. I tried the $8.25 Big Burger with Cheese (see photo), and it was good dive food. Sure, they used American cheese slices. However, the meat, all eight ounces of it, was fresh, and it came on a soft French roll with a pile of fries and a cup of their meatball soup. The soup was more like a cup of ground beef, but I didn't mind. Hearty stuff here...they don't kid around with the cholesterol. The staff looks like they've been here for years since the service was kind of robotic. A server gave me two different checks, and another needed to be coaxed to give me a refill on my Diet Coke. But in a way, it all fits the greasy spoon mindset I should have expected here. I just noticed it's open on weekends until 4PM, so if my arteries can take it, I may just come back. A roadside diner in the Outer Mission...cool. FOOD - 4 stars...a good, greasy-spoon-style burger...who can argue with that? AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...old-time Hollywood meets Mission ghetto SERVICE - 3 stars...seem to be doing it by rote now TOTAL - 4 stars...we need to encourage these small diners to survive, don't you think?...or else, we must live with execrable places like Mel's
google avatar

Humberto V.

Yelp
I've walked past this place many times and each time I say, I should give it a try. Well finally I did. Not much to say about the place since it has been around for quite some time and it shows. I was greeted by the owner and sat by the counter. I ordered the cheese burger and coffee. The cheese burger was cooked to perfection and was well seasoned and juicy. Fries were fresh but small portion. Coffee was fresh but not hot enough for my taste. I went back a couple of days later and had the fish and chips. It came with 3 pieces of fresh fish, fries and tartar sauce. I was really good. Many options to choose from. I suggest you give this place a try. A new trendy techy place opened next door and charge and arm and leg. Why spent beacoup of mula, when you can enjoy a better quality at Big Al's. A trust me.
google avatar

Yelp
I really regret to inform you, but Al's Cafe has changed. It was bought by new owners who changed the menu. We decided to give it a chance anyway. I regret to give them two stars, but I have to be honest about my reviews. It's not personal, it's food. I ordered the Florentine Eggs Bennie. It was totally too fancy for it's own good. The spinach was raw, topped in avocado, a slice of cheese and covered in a White Wine Holendaise. The hasbrowns were overcooked and not crispy enough. They were like you took a chunk of mashed potatoes and slightly fried the outside. My friend ordered the regular Eggs Benedict, which had a weird holindaise flavor to it as well. We thought it may be packaged and maybe that's why it tasted a little different. Now that would normally sound okay breakfast, maybe it was just our taste buds or we were expecting something different... but after we left - we got the meanest stomach aches that lasted all day. Maybe they need to keep things simple for now...

Yelp
Ordered breakfast for 2 and went to pick it up. Immediately when I get there, the Cook behind the counter, starts screaming at me to go run out and track down the woman that just walked out with a bag because apparently she had my food. First of all, don't yell at a customer to run after another customer to try and pick up your mistake. It was pouring rain and the woman wasn't responding when I was flagging her down so he calls one of his waitresses to run out after her but she was afraid to get wet in the rain and didn't really do much. Eventually the woman in the car saw us and figured there's something going on and ran back into the restaurant with the food which I had to double check because I wasn't sure if I got the right order. This is terribly organized and the food is really bad. FYI, don't order the biscuits and gravy because it comes with undercooked shitty canned biscuits.

Stephanie R.

Yelp
Today, I woke up craving corned beef and hash. I looked through the available options on UberEats and saw Al's. It's a simple dish - corned beef, potatoes and eggs. But WOW was it cooked well. This was one of the best corned beef hash that I've had. The saltiness from the corned beef balanced perfectly with the thinly sliced potatoes, which were not salty at all. There was no grease pooling at the bottom of my take out box, a huge feat considering how greasy this dish can be. Every ingredient tasted fresh and perfectly seasoned. My boyfriend got the eggs florentine and that was quite good as well. All of the ingredients were fresh and the presentation was nicely done. I forgot to take photos because the food was so good, but I'll take some pics when I order from them again. I'm seriously considering ordering another corned beef hash, and will pick it up so that they won't lose revenue to a delivery app.

Yelp
So this is just another diner but it's a life saver when you're craving breakfast on a weekend in sf. The service is awesome with someone always filling your water or bottomless coffee or checking on how you're doing. I just wish I liked the food more: My scramble and hash brown were watery and bland French toast was dipped in a batter that felt like there was flour but created a thick coating and wasn't too appetizing I do like places that give you a biscuit as your side toast without an extra charge. The biscuit was decent but a little too much on the hard side for me (I am a biscuit snob though)
