Yelp
SOLID, SOLID 4 STARS for our recent stop in for dinner. First off, this place takes reservations (Open Table) - highly recommend making them because why the hell not amiright? Especially on the weekend. We made them for Fri night, 715PM, peak weekend dinner time - and we were so glad we did. While we were immediately seated, we saw plenty of walk-ins being waitlisted.
This was only our second visit - the first must have been close to a year earlier and, that first time, we stopped in on a whim (walk in) - a spontaneous decision to ditch our plans to eat at Matchbox next door as we walked by this place, peered in, liked what we saw and all of a sudden developed a hankerin' for Italian lol. We ducked in, they sat us immediately and proceeded to enjoy our meal.
Now, why we hadn't thought of this place for dinner since that first time until now is beyond me. Not really sure....
But from our dining experience this second time, it's definitely going on our short list. And won't be forgotten anymore. :)
This'll be a place we'll consider if we've got that hankerin' for Italian or pasta. Aside from Olive Garden (sorry Alta Strada not meaning to offend!!!), there aren't really many specifically Italian places in the NoVA area. (And come on now, I have to say that as much as ppl like to meme Olive Garden, there is a time and place for it - including the affordability factor and $$ value - and I for one am a fan.) :)
With the ridiculously high cost of eating out since post-covid, I guess it's the expected new normal. Which for the budget conscious means dining out has become an every now again occurrence because it's just too damn pricey to enjoy a nice sit down meal whenever the fancy strikes you.
So when the fam DOES go out to eat, it's just a given we will pay an arm and a leg so the food BETTER be amazing, the service stellar and the ambience and interior decor warm and inviting, cozy and charming enough that you feel like you've come to a reallllly special place. And you better not be rushing me out the door to turn tables - I want to stay a while to enjoy my meal, my meal companions and the entire dining experience. These are all the hallmarks of a place I would rate 4 or 5 stars and would place on my go-to dining list.
Alta Strada - check, check, check and check. :)
We loved the ambiance and decor of this place. It's not a huge place. Step inside the door - bar on the left side (it was lively on a Friday night) and the dining area right in front of you. In the dead of winter, I'm not keen on the front entrance opening and closing and letting cold air in - there isn't a vestibule nor a proper waiting area. (Ask to be seated towards the back of the restaurant so the chill isn't an annoyance!) But that nit aside, the place is cute and quaintly decorated - inviting and comfortable.
The dinner menu is one sided. You won't see pages and pages of menu options. They've got a short list of seasonal specialties as well but the selection options are not vast. That's okay though - they do offer something for everyone and you can order any protein with any of their pasta entrees. You can also order a side of pasta with entrees that don't come with pasta.
Party of 3 and we ordered a Chix Parm entree $29 with a side of pasta $7, a Chix Milanese entree $29 with a side of pasta $7 and the Penne alla Vodka pasta entree $22 with sausage $8. We also had the Famous Garlic Bread side brought out with the mains (no bread basket - disappointing).
Our meals - all 3 entrees and all the sides - were delicious. REALLY good. They came out all together, piping hot from the kitchen and were beautifully plated - every single dish. The pasta dishes were all cooked al dente, chewy-just-so and nothing was oversauced. Hallelujah! Fresh parm cheese and fresh ground pepper were offered to top all dishes. And portion sizes were decent - no skimp going on here. In fact, we had leftovers to take home with us which were promptly devoured the next morning (yes, for bfast).
Service was EXCELLENT too. Our server, Fiona, was AHHHHHHMMMMAAAAAAZZZINGGGGG. Fiona was just as pleasant as can be. She knew her stuff. She was patient with all our questions lol. She was responsive and was always there when we needed anything. And the best part was - she never rushed us - she allowed us to truly stay and enjoy our meal and time together. Big love. I mean - if Fiona is an example of the quality of service Alta Strada strives to achieve, KUDOS and duly noted!
Let's put it this way - if I'm going to shell out a Benj-and-half for a meal, I want EVERYTHING about my dining experience, but especially the food, to be spectacular, something memorable.
It certainly was all that.
Be back for sure.
