Google
Alta Via Pizzeria located at 6425 Penn Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15206. On October 30, 2025 I and a guest checked out AVP. While not our first time here but my official first review. We were promptly greeted and seated without delay. Our server, Olivia presented us with drink options. Our order Grilled broccolini with creamy sauce and olive oil drizzle (as pictured $14.00 Greek Salad Fresh mix of greens, feta cheese, red onions, cucumbers, and cherry tomatoes $13.00 + Add Salmon Perfectly grilled salmon filet added to the Greek salad, Original Round Pizza with house tomato sauce, mozzarella, and basil $19.00 with a side ranch dressing [$1.00] Chocolate Chip Cookie warm-baked cookie topped with flaky sea salt $5.00 + Vanilla gelato paired with the cookie $2.00 with everything totalling: $70.62 After our workout at LA Fitness we decided to eat at Alta Via Pizzeria (AVP) in Pittsburgh’s East Liberty district offers a cozy atmosphere perfect for a recovery meall. The service by Olivia was friendly and attentive throughout the night. The Broccolini was lightly charred and plated over a creamy base with olive oil rich in flavor and beautifully presented. The Greek Salad was crisp and refreshing, elevated by the addition of the grilled salmon, which had excellent texture and a perfect sear. The Original Round Pizza delivered strong flavor and a rustic crust, though portions of the outer edge were noticeably burnt (as seen in the photos). Despite that, the cheese and sauce balance was authentic and flavorful. For dessert, the Chocolate Chip Cookie with Gelato stood out served warm, soft, and slightly gooey, paired perfectly with a scoop of creamy vanilla gelato. While the pizza’s crust could use a touch less char, the salad, broccolini, and dessert more than made up for it showcasing quality ingredients and thoughtful presentation. Overall Rating: Excellent service, upscale atmosphere, and strong menu execution with minor preparation flaws on the pizza crust.

Google
Mixed review. My most recent experience was really good. The pizza was just right. We got the special pizza - the spooky one with black garlic etc - and it was really good. In the past. I've had less than stellar pizzas from here. I really enjoy their atmosphere and their service is generally really good. The arancini appetizer was quite delicious. This is a good spot to take people from out of town if they want a casual slice or for a sit-down dinner.

Google
5 stars for the service. Amazing service and atmosphere. Loved the Pepperoni and Taleggio pizza here. It's a 14" round pizza. The Taleggio cheese is definitely yummy. The salads here are big portions. We ordered the Rigatoni with meatballs and it was ok.

Google
I got the white pizza and I can't say that it was horrible but it was the WORST white pizza I have ever had. Especially when you consider it was $25 for one personal pizza. It had a drizzle on top which was very garlic heavy but I like garlic. I also love ricotta cheese but their ricotta had the consistency of an eraser. The worst part was that it was SO salty it was inedible. Unfortunately, the crust is bland and over cooked. I can't remember when I had a pizza that was worse but I'm sure there was at some point, right? I will say it has a nice atmosphere if you just want to go there and take pictures for instagram.

Google
One of the best pizzas in the Pittsburgh area ! The sauce is unlike anything I’ve ever had and all the ingredients just flow together like perfection. Nice staff and really cool open glass building design.

Google
Gluten free pizza crust is great! Only reason I’m giving it four stars instead of five is because the pizza itself (cheese and sauce) was really salty. If it wasn’t salty this would’ve been five stars.

Google
Amazing. I went when it opened on a Saturday and both the service and alla vodka pizza with caramelized onions was excellent. It wasn’t busy when they opened but it got slightly busy within an hour. Service was still super fast and friendly. All of them. Prices are okay, definitely worth it! Next time I visit I have to try the tiramisu, this time I was too full from a whole pizza! Shoutout to the waitresses! 10/10!

Google
The food and service here is amazing! We had the fig pizza which was delicious. The manager Portia came by our table and made sure we had everything we needed and was very helpful and knowledgeable of the menu. We would definitely come back here!!

Yelp
Located in Bakery Square and part of Big Burrito group, AVP offers a menu of pizzas, pastas, sandwiches, desserts, and drinks. The bar hosts happy hour from 4-6pm featuring bites, drafts, cocktails, and wine. While the cacio e pepe pizza didn't quite measure up to my expectations, the square vodka pizza (vodka sauce, mozzarella, Pecorino Romano, basil, pepperoni) was delicious. The gingerbread tiramisu (whipped mascarpone, gingerbread crumb, espresso, ladyfingers, cocoa) was an amazing seasonal offering!
google avatar

Yelp
AVP is really a good place to have pizza and talk with friends. You can't help but feel relaxed in its soothing colors and lighting. Lots of specialty pizzas to choose from or you can build your own. Plenty of other menu items if you prefer to avoid the tasty triangles. The staff is welcoming and typical of Big Burrito restaurants. Parking after seven is usually available right outside the door and the garage is always there, just not as convenient.

Yelp
We ordered from the takeout window and sat in the space between the restaurant area and the city kitchen area. We ordered several slices. When they first brought out our order, one of the slices was wrong--not a big deal, but instead of just taking the one slice back, they took our whole order back and then when they brought it back some of the slices had cooled down and weren't as hot. The pizza was good. The specialty slice had a drizzle made to look like a spiderweb, which was cute. Overall, I would come back!

Yelp
I've been to Alta via - but never the pizzeria & wow am i disappointed in myself for that one. This place was . Honestly everything was great. The salad was fresh, pizza came out hot, and the atmosphere is off the charts. So many great concepts in one location. Will be back!

Yelp
Alta Via Pizzeria (AVP) is a local restaurant that is in Bakery Square and serves Italian foods for lunch, dinner, and catering for dining in and takeout. AVP's menu lists appetizers (e.g., arancini and mozzarella sticks), salads, sandwiches, main courses (e.g., pizzas and chicken parmesan), desserts (e.g., tiramisu and gelato), and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. So far, I have eaten two weekday lunches here. I did not have reservations, but many tables were available. The waitresses provided very timely and friendly service. For my first lunch, my main course was mafaldini (5 stars), which had perfectly cooked noodles and a delicious spicy sauce. I added meatballs (3 stars) that tasted OK to me. My dessert was affogato (4.5 stars). I am not a coffee drinker, but I enjoyed eating vanilla gelato with some espresso in it. For my second lunch, I ate a slice of the Original cheese pizza (4.5 stars) with a combo Chopped Salad (5 stars) and a slice of the Chicken Bacon Ranch pizza (4 stars). The slices were large and had a nicely chewy crust and flavorful toppings. The salad contained delicious ingredients of greens, salami, mozzarella, chickpeas, giardiniera, pine nuts, basil, and red wine vinaigrette.

Yelp
Met up with my gal pals for some pre-Christmas cheer at AVP. Beautiful and comfortable atmosphere with subdued lighting and cozy booths. Shared some apps- great zucchini, good meatballs, ok French fries and a fantastic slice of pepperoni plus cocktails. Gianna took great care of us! We all agreed AVP was a great pic and we'll be back.

Yelp
Sat at the bar for happy hour, they had cheap apps and good drink deals. bartender was friendly and attentive. The portion sizes are huge, so many leftovers and reasonably priced. They were decorated for xmas so it was cozy and warm. Highly recommend

Yelp
After a busy Saturday and no desire to cook, we decided to take our chances and head to Alta Via Pizzeria in Bakery Square. To our surprise, we were seated right away--the place was nearly empty, which made for a calm and relaxed evening. Our server, Dustin, was excellent--attentive, friendly, and on top of things. We started with the chopped salad, which was tasty but a bit of a surprise. With chickpeas, pine nuts, salami, and field greens, it was fresh and flavorful--but not exactly what you'd expect from something labeled "chopped." Still, no complaints on the taste. The standout of the night was the Hot Honey Chicken pizza--a perfect balance of sweet and spicy with a crispy crust. We split everything, and it was just the right amount for a casual, no-fuss dinner. Overall: Quick seating (at least on a Saturday evening) Great service from Dustin Delicious pizza Salad name might be misleading, but still enjoyable A lovely, easy night out--no reservations, no rush, just good food and a good vibe.

Yelp
Pizzas were delicious! We got the romeo, prosciutto, and buffalo chicken pies. They were so tasty with thick crust. Perfect slice sizes. We ordered takeout, but i'd definitely have to go in person to get a better take on the space!

Yelp
We stopped by for their happy hour on MLK Day and were able to get a table for four right away. Their happy hour has both food and drinks which I love. We then ordered our pizzas and sandwiches. Everything was really good and the portions were generous. It took a while to flag down our server towards the end of our meal to get takeout containers and get our checks.!

Yelp
1/29/25 Ate List: Round Pizzas: Original - 8.2 Pepperoni and Taleggio - 8.6 Really solid spot. Had been meaning to try this pizza for a while. Flavor of the original is good. VERY thin. VERY light. It is delicious but also very plain (if that's what you're after, you should be happy). The Pepperoni and Taleggio really caught me off guard and I really enjoyed it. Slight kick. Perfect small pepperonis. Both pizzas had a good tasting crust. Really great all around. The atmosphere and quality is a little higher which shows in the price tag. We got these two pizzas for about $45. A little steep but that's the only knock I have for it. If my total was closer to $30, this would become a near weekly spot for us.

Yelp
Another great night at Alta via pizzeria. Charlie took great care of us and got us everything we needed. We shared a few starters, then shared a pizza and finished off with the tiramisu. I absolutely love the tiramisu presentation and I can't wait for my next visit.

Yelp
The ambiance is very clean and inviting. The seats are also comfortable. We ordered the regular pizza and it was so good! I would highly recommend avp and can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Classic gem in Bakery Square! Love coming to Alta Via but I definitely recommend a reservation. Came for happy hour but turns out happy hour is only for bar seating (as a heads up)! With so many options it was hard to pick which pizzas to order. Tried the ramp pizza (a special) and it was delicious! Crowd pleaser for sure. Also got classics like the prosciutto and pepperoni rounds which were also delicious. I ordered a Hugo spritz and tasted more like water than anything and my friends spritz's also tasted really diluted. So if you order drinks definitely get the normal cocktails and not the spritz's! My friend's bee's knees was great.

Yelp
Solid pizza joint if you're looking for something more upscale than take-out. We've been a few times and I keep not leaving a review because we eat the pizza faster than I can remember to take a picture! Our most recent visit, service was a bit slow but we also went during the holidays when there were only three other tables seated in the restaurant. We got the round pepperoni and taleggio pizza and some cocktails, and it was all delicious as always.

Yelp
I see I last reviewed this spot when it was takeout only. I have now been here at least four times since they opened for dine in so I feel qualified to review it again. It's a beautiful place to eat, and although the focus is on being a pizzeria, there are plenty of non-pizza items if there are folks in your party who want to branch out, such as salads, sandwiches and pastas that you might be familiar with from their other locations. I've never had a sandwich here but their pastas are amazing and I can't recommend them highly enough, particularly the mafaldini with vodka sauce. I'm also a huge fan of the appetizers, particularly the olives and Arancini. I am usually at this location however for pizza. If you come here during your birthday month with a big burrito restaurants birthday email (sign up for their list!) you will get a full pizza or entrée for free, which I did in October. On my last couple of visits I sat at the bar for pizza slices. On this visit I was redeeming my Pittsburgh Pizza Passport. They had three slices available today: square, one with pepperoni and one classic plain. As a vegetarian the classic plain was my only option, but I'm very happy with that here. I also ordered a simple blood orange San Pellegrino. Bar service is quick and attentive, the person next to me was ordering multiple alcoholic drinks but I never felt pressured to order more than my slice and soda. The classic slice here is perfectly done. Not Neapolitan thin but not too thick, perfect amount of cheese, a little bit of basil. It's just right and one of my favorite slices in the city.

Yelp
I've been here a couple times and it's really just so good. Most recently, a friend and I shared the burrata and a buffalo chicken pizza. We loved both! Not only is the food amazing, but the space is so cute. I love that the huge windows allow a lot of natural light and there is greenery throughout the restaurant. Service is also always quick and friendly with recommendations as needed.

Yelp
Well the Pizza Was Good BUT It Was Very Over Priced and the staff wasn't very friendly towards my service dog ... unfortunately won't be going back

Yelp
Went back here recently with a group, including several kids, and got take out. We sat outside in Bakery Square while the kiddos played on the large turf field adjacent to the restaurant. It was a very nice outdoor atmosphere and let the kids run wild while the adults could talk and/or eat. We got one pizza and a couple sides, which was plenty for our family of three. The Romeo pizza was pretty interesting, with some sausage, large blobs of ricotta, and a mildly spicy hot sauce. A tad wet for a pizza but lots of good flavor and very filling. Beans & greens was a nice side; a hair smaller than I would have expected but tasty. Also, like the pizza, a bit too saucy. Similar on the side of brussels sprouts; yummy but too much sauce. The meal left me satisfied but also thirsty from the salty/saucy dishes.

Yelp
Thank you AVP for bringing back your Square Pizzas! Our group of 6 is delighted!!! We have put AVP back into our monthly rotation
google avatar

Madi N.

Yelp
Great pizza and fun date night! However zucchini fries were the hardest fries I've ever had. Hard to eat and bite into. Ended up not being able to eat them all due to dislike. Pizza was amazing!
google avatar

Melissa N.

Yelp
My 1st time grabbing lunch at AVP. Service was great for a Monday and being a holiday. We ordered the chicken parm sandwich and the meatball hoagie. Immediately as the food was delivered to our table, I could tell there was not enough red sauce for either dish. The server did bring me some extra which was both much needed and appreciated. I tried both the sandwich and hoagie and preferred the Chicken Parm here which surprised me because I love meatball hoagies. The parking was free in a garage close by. Overall, I would dine for lunch at AVP again.

Yelp
My husband and I wanted to find something upgraded but also very easy and AVP was exactly what we wanted! Walking in, the restaurant has a cool vibe and the staff were very welcoming! Once seated, the menu had so many options it was hard to choose what to get. The waitress gave us some good direction. We were also happy that they had happy hour deals on a Saturday! We ultimately decided on two pizzas - their special of the day and one of their classics. The special pizza (Calabrian chili and sausage) had a nice kick and it was full of flavor, and their classic pizza (Fig and Brie) was sweet and was a nice complement to the spicy of the other one. We also got the Semolina Crusted Zucchini, which had a delicious salty crust to the sweet zucchini. We cannot wait to go back again and try something different next time!
google avatar

Nelson B.

Yelp
This place has some amazing pizza! The space is laid back and the service is ok. We had to wait a while for the pizza compared to the other food. The olive appetizer is worth getting.
google avatar

Heather B.

Yelp
Fantastic square pizzas - crispy, cheesy crust, with super fun toppings. Highly recommend the hot honey chicken pizza. The circle pizzas are great as well if you're looking for something lighter - great chew on the crust.
google avatar

Xin F.

Yelp
Was excited to try this since I've heard good things about AVP's pizza but was slightly disappointed by the quality of the pizza. Shared an appetizer and a round pizza with my friend. The actual burrata ratio to the sides was off. Salad turned out good tho! Unfortunately the pizza was slight burnt causing the crust to harden. Perhaps I've ordered the wrong type and should have stuck with their square pizza. Service was slow with an unexpected crowd while I was there on a Monday. Our servers were great and attentive to our orders.
google avatar

Maureen M.

Yelp
We really move this place and come frequently. This trip left a terrible impression. 1. They've eliminated the signature rectangular pizza, which was the thing that set them apart from better pizzas in the area. Our usual appetizers were cold and lacked their typical garnishing. 2. Waited forever for a drink; arrived well after the pizza and had to ask someone who wasn't our server. It was a very slow night, no reason for the indifferent service we got. 3. Server practically threw us out before 6pm. Wanted to bring a box as we were starting our second slices, still actively eating. We're sitting there chewing and they're asking about a box, coffee, desert, check. It was really awkward and rude. We're not slow eaters, and we were celebrating a birthday so would have absolutely been inclined to get dessert if we'd had a second to finish eating and let our food settle. We went elsewhere.

Yelp
Great atmosphere. Great food. Very simple approach ! The ice cream next door was a great close to the meal.

Yelp
I signed up for Big Burrito Birthday reward and received $30 off an entree. My husband and daughter came with me.We got the chopped salad first and it was fresh, high quality ingredients and delicious.Thenvwe got a square pizza with mushrooms and sausage. It was so good.Again ingredients were so fresh and there was a lot of mushrooms and sausage on pizza.Waitress was so kind and pleasant.A great meal.

Yelp
Alta via pizzeria really snuck up on me. I went a few time when they first opened and enjoyed it. It has slowly become my families go to pizza place. I do have to say take out is the way to go. The few times I've dined in the service has been slow and there's a very grumpy woman working the bar. I was also surprised that even though they have a full bar they only have can soda. My family loves getting take out and eating on the lawn to let the kiddos run around. I would definitely recommend getting pizza here. Beats anything you'd get at city kitchen.
google avatar

Nhu L.

Yelp
This is such a cute place for date night, birthdays, special occasions or even a casual lunch! If you are craving pizza then this is definitely a place to go to! Especially it being in such a nice cute location where you can shop and get dessert after! The service was good and prompt! They take pan pizza to another level because it's really thick! I love pan pizza but I would say one slice is good enough for me. Definitely a family style place which I love so I can try all the flavors!
google avatar

Josh S.

Yelp
Went for dinner, overpriced and poor service. I've had decent experiences in the past and decided to give another go, definitely will not come back. Mediocre/poor pizza for top price.
google avatar

Angela L.

Yelp
OK so this is going to have to be the best piece I've had in Pittsburgh. What the hell. The pizza was so delicious. My favorite was the one with pepperoni and mozzarella, I can't remember what it was called but I was shocked when I tasted it. I was not expecting it to be that good! I ordered two pies and it did take a while for them to come out but that was immediately forgiven once I tasted how good it was I like the ambience of the restaurant. Natural light that came in. their outdoor seating isn't actually outdoor seating but rather some tables outside the doors underneath a high ceiling with windows to allow the sun to come in a bit.

Mike D.

Yelp
We ordered the veggie pizza and it does not include pizza sauce! It's a "white pizza." It consists of bland dough, an excessive layer of cheese and a scant amount of veggies. It is disappointing and not worth the price. Service was spotty at best. Our server was busy with a table of 11 and barely had time to check on us. Other servers ignored us since we weren't one of their tables. When our pizza arrived, we wanted red pepper with it. We were half done with the pizza when the server returned and went to get red pepper. Here is a tip for the manager: when customers order pizza, deliver red pepper to the table -- before the pizza shows up. Bottom line: Not worth the price.

Yelp
Super delicious, with an elegant interior atmosphere, and the waiters were very attentive to our dining experience. I visited Italy a long time ago and really liked the Italian pizza culture. Since then, I've tried pizza in many different places while traveling, but very few places truly satisfied me (I also like a pizza place in Shanghai, China, which is very authentic, but their crust is thin, so the flavor is a bit different from here). Anyway, the three of us ordered two pizzas, and we especially loved the pepperoni here! Very authentic and tasty.
google avatar

Maureen R.

Yelp
This place is in Bakery Square, which is such a great area. There's an outdoor/atrium area with a to go window to order at. Or you can sit inside the restaurant. It was a warm night so we sat inside. We started with the artichoke that was roasted and had so much flavor. We also split the chopped salad. We were so hungry, I forgot to take pictures of these. We then shared two square pizzas. They are known for the square pizza, but also have a traditional round. We had the Rosa that is a plain cheese pizza with vodka sauce. We also had the mushroom and onion. The group consensus was that the mushroom and onion was the favorite. The dough is delicious with a crispy-ness on the outside that really makes it. Our server was awesome....super attentive, answered our questions and was very personable.
google avatar

Rich R.

Yelp
What a cool place! The guy woking the counter was so helpful and nice! I ordered a pepperoni pizza and they were about to close and decided to make one fir me!!!! The parking is in a mall type area but lots of other choices if pizza is not your thing. But it should be. Pizza is round and has stuff on it and should be its own food group!!
google avatar

Valerie Y.

Yelp
I love AVP in Bakery Square! It's such a solid spot for all palates! I love the margarita pizza! There is a subtle spice to it! And the salads are yummy! My favorites are the Greek, the Cesar, and the Beet (golden beets). The service is always great too!

A Z.

Yelp
We ordered out tonite 10 16 25 the food was delicious we ordered 4 different pizzas pasta with sausage. Appetizers, olives. Meatballs. Variety of food the staff was very friendly and accommodating food was 5 stars hats off to AVP definitely ordering again
google avatar

Ciara D.

Yelp
Awesome atmosphere! We had great service! Our pizza was awesome! We got a plain cheese pizza for our kids and I got the hot honey chicken pizza and it was great! Perfect sweet to spicy ratio! Still thinking about that flavor! Definitely kid friendly as long as your kids like pizza! They gave crayons and coloring pages! The only reason I took off a star is that it is a little pricey for being pizza! But overall a fan!
google avatar

Ulyana K.

Yelp
A solid and tasty pizza, but I did find it a bit pricey. The portions are quite good though, definitely enough to share between a few people. I tried their classic chocolate chip cookie and a round white pizza. The white pizza was a bit of a let down, but still solid. It just wasn't that flavorful. Not much of a garlicky flavor. I do like that it was very thin crust and not greasy at all. The crust was kind of forgettable, and so was the cheese. The little drizzle (ranch?) on top really was what made this pizza pop. The chocolate chip cookie was absolutely huge! Way larger than I expected. And, it was really good. Tons of chocolate inside. Crunchy in the outside and soft in the middle. It wasn't too sweet either (I would have wanted a bit more sweetness). Really good still. All in all, nice pizza place for some more upscale slices. The white pie wasn't that flavorful, but you must try the chocolate chip cookie if you come here.
google avatar

Lindsey C.

Yelp
This really had potential.. unfortunately part of the issue is that we ordered delivery and everything we order arrives ice cold. We had the Fig & Brie Pizza, Crusted Zucchini and Tiramisu. The pizza was ok. We had to microwave it which really ruins the fresh arugula on top and it was really just too rich. With figs and honey it was just incredibly sweet. The crust was good though so definitely had potential. The zucchini was terrible... it was just so soggy and mushy, not a fan. The tiramisu was very ok... that's all :-) I would give another chance sometime but less foofy, lol.
google avatar

Karla D.

Yelp
I really like the layout. It's for the feel of an upscale restaurant. A high-end pizzeria with product that's worthy of the interior design. The pizzas are phenomenal. I love the AVP (square) and Original (round). The Margherita is incredible. Pizzas are reminiscent of those I've had in Italy. Creative cheese blends, flavor punching sauces, light and airy dough. Service is outstanding.
google avatar

Jon G.

Yelp
Another of the pizza places in Pittsburgh that I wanted to try. I was in Bakery Square so I made a point to order AVP. They were not too busy so we grabbed a couple slices. One pepperoni and one seasonal special Spooky Pizza. Both were large and delicious. The staff was super friendly and accomodating. Definitely going back.
google avatar

Leslie H.

Yelp
I'm always glad to support places that offer vegan options. What I am less glad about is when I am asked to pay considerably more to get those plant-based options. AVP's vegan ingredients are top notch and coalesce into a delicious pie. However, one pizza ends up costing over $30 dollars due to the hefty up-charges, so I don't go back very often unless I have a discount code.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Pizza passport stop 12 and first time here. Bartender was great and they offered pepperoni, plain, and rotating daily special which was fresh crab, fresh mozzarella, lemon aioli and fresh herbs. Can't decide get both, right? Best non sourdough crust of the whole passport so far...a little on the dense bread side which I enjoy. The ingredients were fresh and the pepperoni was cooked perfectly. I will surely be back!
google avatar

Halie G.

Yelp
My mouth is watering looking at the pizza picture again. Loved my experience at AVP. Went for brunch and got a regular pizza and their breakfast pizza. Everything was so fresh and light. I can't wait to go back and try more!

Louise C.

Yelp
Good specialty pizza. Could be warmer But interesting. Salish there were more options and more well done crust.

Yelp
Seated at 8:45 for 8 PM birthday reservations with closing time 10 o'clock. Food, drinks, prices, and atmosphere were all good; Although my friend's pasta came out cold and needed reheated. Staff were nice and apologetic for the few issues. I hope to try again with a smaller group on a less busy day with more time to enjoy the restaurant.
