Bagels From Chains Like Panera and Einstein's Won't Win Awards. They're Still Worth Loving | Bon Appétit

"This bakery brand’s sprouted‑wheat bagels are remembered as nutty and crumbly, offering a homestyle flavor that shoppers deliberately buy in plastic bundles at national grocery chains. While not intended to compete head‑to‑head with traditional New York–style bagels, these loaves occupy a distinct, well‑liked category that evokes ‘home’ for some eaters." - ByAntara Sinha

My favorite bread is protein and ca style! Makes the best French toast and open faced sand witches yummy! I buy it all fresh and freeze it to use as needed. The bagels, buns and everything else they make is superior products! Been sustained by these excellent bakers for decades now! Thanks! Keep up the good work!

I have been buying their bread since it was Captain Carrot Bread at Raleys. In recent years Raleys has continually been out of Raisin Cinnamon bread & hamburger buns. I started to buy at El Cerrito Natural Foods & then they were continually out. I reached out hard to both & they didn't get it. That's why I wrote to the company. NO ANSWER! Now my wife makes our bread. I still need the buns. I was able to get them for the first time in 18 months at El Cerrito Natural.

Google
The new soft bread with all due respect, really sucks, your business is going to go way down If you keep that on the market. I got it from grocery outlet and I see you have it at whole foods Hope you don't mess with the trader Joe mix. I really even give it one star it's thin is nasty is gooey I can't believe you guys think you're going to go somewhere with this I do understand that sometimes the bread feels hard on the outside and it has holes occasionally however it's still way worth the direction you've gone in. it was the best bread on the planet. If you have any questions you can contact me at my email williamgb66@yahoo

I’ve been buying their California style sprouted bread for years. This last loaf I bought seems like it is 30% less substantial than before and is too delicate. Now when I butter it after toasting it, the butter goes through and makes a soggy mess. (Forget French toast.) I can actually see through the bread like lace. It looks like they’re covering it up by calling it “now softer”. All I can see is they’ve cut back on its substance. I’m sad because this has been my favorite bread for so long, but it’s time for a divorce. Now I wish I (and lots of other people) had posted how much we loved it before and maybe they would not have made such a bad change.

Google
The bread has good taste, but there are 3 problems. 1. The thin slice bread is falling apart and many times there are holes 2. The wide Bread organic is not available anywhere online only 3. Ordering online you will end up paying over $10 per loaf, as the shipping is very expensive. Therefore it would be nice that Alvarado bakery would adjust the prices since the shipping is more expensive that its bread. They still would make more profit than selling to middle men, like vendors and local retail stores.

Google
Have bought the sprout bagels for years. Recently the recipe changed and the price went up. Ech! All that added flour! So soft and doughy they can't even be called bagels. The dough sticks to your teeth. They used to have texture - they were grainy and delicious plus great for a low gluten diet. Now it's just a scam . Were you bought out by the Philippines?

Google
I got my bread shipped to Florida... YESSSS NO-Salt freshly sprouted multi-grain wheat. Amazing for all of America to be able to enjoy quality bread without the salt and other junk; and it tastes delicious! Fresh Baked YUMMMM. I am so Blessed to have found this bakery and will start to order this bread always and forever!!

Google
The sprouted flax is the best low-carb bread I've ever had. Since COVID it's hard to find locally, and I'm happy to pay $40.00 shipping to have it delivered. That's how much I like the product.

Yelp
I very recently found Alvarado St Bakery Flax and Chia thin sliced freshly sprouted bread and I loved everything about it. I am trying to find it online to order but not able to. Would love assistance :)

Yelp
Softer? What happened to the last good commercial bread in the USA? Have they lost their collective minds? There are enough breads out their with no substance...this is a sad day indeed. Wheat bread needs heft and texture, not this new air puffed sugary lightness. Thank god their is a local bakery that near me that still has an ounce of baking integrity left.
google avatar

Christina K.

Yelp
I do not like the new SOFTER whole wheat bread. I ate the original version for years and it was my favorite bread. I will not eat it again, since it now has flours and sugar.added to it, amd it has no bulk or density to it. It squishes like Wonder bread! Horrible. I am beyond disappointed

Susan W.

Yelp
Alvarado brought their old recipe back! The original sprouted whole wheat is now available again, under "Black Label", with the higher protein and fiber. It comes both regular and thin-sliced. Seems enough of us wanted the old bread back they they brought it back. Safeway carries the thin-sliced, and Draeger's has the regular. Outstanding for sandwiches and toast.
google avatar

Yelp
The "Now Softer" version is a HUGE disappointment. Why bother with sprouted grains if you're going to add white flour and sugar, to make it taste more like nondescript "wheat" breads? I loved the Alvarado Street's flourless sprouted loaves-- a staple for me for many years and I am so so so sorry to see this change. I got a loaf today marked 061723--- supposedly good to sell for 11 more days, and it already tastes days old! So I will return it and not buy your product again, unless you bring the wholesome flourless sprouted recipe back. Please do!

Clifford S.

Yelp
I have always loved their breads. Years ago, I could shop at the bakery's store but no more [Covid? ] The lady who answered the door told me that I could order online and pick up the next day. Unfortunately, the website seems to be down.

Timothy Z.

Yelp
What were you thinking? Is this your version of shrinkflation? I was a loyal customer for as long as you were around. When Whole Foods no longer carried your sprouted rye bread, I resigned and went to your sourdough wheat bread. But your new "version" is a disgrace. It is so pumped up full of air, that even after it is toasted, it collapses when you butter it. Here's an idea for you. Try selling your old version side-by-side with this new crap on supermarket shelves and watch what happens.

Warren H.

Yelp
It seems that the new "Softer" recipe means that Alvarado street no longer makes flourless bread. The ingredients used to list various crushed grains only and the bread was dense. I know that for me, this was the only reason for paying the extra price for the bread. Alvarado Street may as well place their bread in the regular bread aisle along with all the others since there isn't really anything that sets it apart anymore. Christina K is absolutely right about the wonder bread comment. I think the company is going to pay for this decision - I cannot believe that they surveyed the customer base before implementing this sabotage of their product.

Robert E.

Yelp
I have been a fan of Alvarado Street Bakery sprouted wheat bread for many years. They recently changed the recipe and say it is now softer. The bread now has a paste taste and a different consistency that I do not like. Since there are other sprouted breads on the market now I will be searching for a new bread.

Lenore U.

Yelp
The new "softer" version of your Sprouted Wheat bread is a mistake. Learn from the lesson of "New Coke" in 1985. This new softer bread is very sweet, has less flavor, and is rather mushy like so many other inferior brands. Each slice also has 17% less protein, not a good thing. The recipe is drastically changed, with the addition of cane sugar, whole wheat flour and white flour. After several decades of eating exclusively Alvarado Street Bakery Sprouted Wheat bread, I will not eat this new version. You have lost a dedicated customer.

Lexus G.

Yelp
Disappointed in the "Now softer" multigrain bread. If I wanted softer and more doughy bread I would buy the economy loaves offered in any supermarket bread aisle.
google avatar

Chutney B.

Yelp
Thank you sincerely Alvarado Street Bakery for your excellent breads. Sprouted multigrain toast each and every morning is all I ask for in this life, with maybe a little jam on top. A word of caution, Whole Foods freezes and thaws the bread before it goes on the shelf. Quality is noticeably diminished.

Yelp
My honey and I were yearning for burgers one evening for dinner. Okay, it's a pit stop at Nob Hill because I wanted my bottles of Sweet Leaf Tea, too. We got to the bread aisle and they didn't have the Oroweat hamburger buns (whole wheat) that we usually buy. I did not want the Sara Lee brand...yep I am very picky on my breads and buns. Inventory was low on whole wheat breads, buns, rolls, etc. The choices we had were Alvarado Street Bakery Sprouted Burger Buns (100% Whole Grain) or Sara Lee hamburger buns. The Sara Lee pack had 8 buns and the Alvarado had 6 buns. Alvarado was pricier than Sara Lee, but ingredient-wise the former was healthier than the latter. Here it is, our first time trying a different brand of burger buns. Will it be something that we enjoy and will we buy the product again in the future? Answer: yes, yes!! Alvarado's sprouted burger buns are made with "organic sprouted wheat berries, organic whole wheat flour, filtered water, honey, wheat gluten, fresh yeast, sea salt, soy based lecithin, cultured wheat." Their buns are "made in a bakery that DOES NOT use peanuts, tree nuts, or dairy products." (Quoted information from their bag.) These buns were not only great for burgers, but also toast with butter and organic blackberry jam; and a fried egg sandwich. Forget Oroweat whole wheat hamburger buns, I found a truly wonderful organic 100% whole grain burger buns made by Alvarado Street Bakery. I also look forward to trying their cinnamon raisin bread, sprouted wheat bagels and tortillas. Finally, when one sees products from Alvarado Street Bakery, do not walk away. Purchase their breads, buns, bagels, tortillas, etc., your body will appreciate it...LOL.

Yelp
California style complete protein is our favorite. It's time for Alvarado Bakery to 100% expand into the gluten-free market . Please! Find a need and fill it whydon'tcha. Your clients will love you for these efforts. Just build a GF bakery. Thank you.

Yelp
I love Alvarado Street Bakery. This is the corporate office but I'm reviewing their products. I only eat bread from Alvarado. They are delicious and nutritious -- my favorite is the sprouted barley bread. I also love the reference to Alvarado St in Los Angeles, which happens to be my home town. Thanks for making such quality products.

Yelp
BBE = Best Bread Ever !!! Not light & spongy, not dense & flavorless, these breads are just right. Made with spouted whole grains, the kind Dr. Oz recommends. The rye, you taste the rye not too light, not too heavy. The cinnamon raisin bread is my breakfast favorite. Overall, I'll put this bread along side any other brand and I feel that overall, you'll find Alvarado Street Bakery bread to be superior in every way. No corn syrup and inferior ingredients in these products, just the real thing. We by it online by the case. Keep up the great work, we appreciate it and so do our bodies;) Alvarado Street Bakery breads, ROCK !!!

Yelp
We love their bread. In particular the spouted RYE is exceptional bread. The taste is complex, it toasts beautifully and at 5 mg of protein a slice, it stays with you. We have it most mornings with whipped butter and English marmalade.

R C.

Yelp
I can not say enough good things about this company. Aside from the fact that their bread is excellent, the customer service is above and beyond the best. I ordered the ASB brand of bread off of Amazon, and it never shipped. So I contacted ASB via email to let them know. Even though ASB is not affiliated with the seller on amazon, they shipped me the bread, overnight, free of charge. This is not the kind of service you expect from any company. If I could give them 10 stars, I would.

Yelp
Been a staple for me for at least 20 years. Also amazing about the company is their business model, it would revolutionize America.

Anna L.

Yelp
you've discontinued your only low carb brad option - flaxseed brad! and you did it in the middle of the pandemic with no warning to the consumers! this is a punch in a gut!
google avatar

Monica F.

Yelp
This bakery laid off 22 people at the beginning of this month most of whom had worked there for 20+ years. Horrible! I'll never buy their bread again.
google avatar

Ralph C.

Yelp
I've purchased most of their breads. Healthy, reasonably priced, and locally made. My favorite is the flax seed bread. Not the tastiest of their breads, but I feel better knowing how healthy it is. Tip: Trader Joes generally has the best prices on their breads. My only complaint is that I can't try all their products. I have yet to see the sourdough or cinnamon raisin breads in a local grocery store.

Yelp
Love this bread. I love that it's from whole sprouted grains. I really like the sprouted sourdough. This bread is made from very good ingredients.

Yelp
i used to love this sprouted bread for a long time........but a couple years ago, alvarado began to freeze everything. so today all breads are now f r o z e n ( yes ) f r o z e n !!! the wonderful fresh soft texture & lovely aroma is gone which was the very things that set it apart from all the other brands of sprouted bread. it used to toast beautifully & was the best i ever tasted. now it has none of the soft texture, little aroma and the act of toasting previously f r o z e n bread yields a hard tasteless result because f r e e z i n g destroyed the very life that these breads used to have. they simply ruined it. it's really a loss of a rare superior product in the name of higher profit and longer shelf life. for all of you that never had the experience of enjoying these breads before alvarado began freezing them, you will never know what a very special product you missed.. ...unless you drive to petaluma and buy a bread directly from their bakery, ( before ) they freeze it. but for me in berkeley it will never ever happen. goodbye alvarado, this old fan of yours is moving on.....

J. D.

Yelp
I really enjoy this bread, particularly the Sprouted Rye. Thanks for your delicious, healthy bread, Alvarado St. Bakery!

Parvathi S.

Yelp
Love It ! The safeway near my house have their items sometimes and healthy food has never tasted so good. I love the sprouted whole wheat bread , its has a nice texture and it doesn't even have sugar.
