"On an average day at Alwatan you’ll see customers buying several bags of fresh pita bread, with the enticing smells encasing the entire building. Besides fresh pita, they specialize in mu’jinat, savory baked goods made with dough, including mana’eesh (za’tar bread sometimes with cheese), akras (wheat fritters), and sfiha (flatbread with meat). Another highlight at Alwatan is the ka’ik: airy bread covered densely in sesame seeds, a popular staple sold on street carts in Palestine, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon. Make it a meal by trying it with some of the bakery’s falafel. Alwatan also sells tea biscuits that are crunchy and slightly sweet, with anise and ma’amoul." - Nylah Iqbal Muhammad

"Alwatan is a Bridgeview classic because it features such an extensive menu of mu’jinat, an expansive genre of savory baked goods made with dough including mana’eesh (za’tar bread), akras (wheat fritters), and sfiha (flatbread with meat).  The white cheese and za’tar man’eesh come in all of the classic varieties (including what’s often called “cocktail” — a mix of cheese and za’tar). But another reason to go to Alwatan is for its ka’ik: an airy bread covered densely in sesames and typically sold from carts on the streets of Palestine, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon. Related distantly to the Turkish simit (circular bread with a hole), ka’ik can come in different forms (shaped like a long-oval, or like a football) and is eaten on its own (or with salt, za’tar, ful (fava beans), or whatever else you have on hand). A piece of ka’ik and some of Alwatan’s excellent falafel makes a meal in itself. Watan also sells tea biscuits that are crunchy and slightly sweet, with anise and ma’amoul." - N.A. Mansour

Yelp
One of the best middle eastern bakeries around. If you are in the area, go ahead and grab a meat pie or spinach pie! They bake everything fresh and use great ingredients. Thank you Alwatan for your great food and service!

Lala N.

Yelp
Freshest bread around! This place reminds me of one of the bakeries in the Middle East. I drive two hours twice a month to visit this place and it's worth it!

Stephen S.

Yelp
Very fresh, still warm, delicious pita. Meat pies were very tasty. Cheese pies were also good. Fig cookies were delicious. I wouldn't hesitate to stop if anywhere near. Best pita I've had in years.

Yelp
Great fresh bread, be prepared for it to be super packed. It's a grab and go kinda thing

Ramia B.

Yelp

Yelp
My Reviews/Ratings are fair and non-bias. STAFF- Fair & Friendly, they take care of the regulars. I don't live around this area, but I make a great along with my family for these pies. PRICES- Compared to all the bakery's around this community, they seem to have fair prices, for it's quantity & quality. This bakery has been around for a while, they built a great relationship with their community & the prices haven't scared anyone away. This is a successful establishment. FOOD- Because of the long distant commute I make, I always get 4-5 pies of each; meat, cheese, spinach, chicken, zatar, etc... You have to get there early to catch the fresh batch! Overall, they do not disappoint and continue to maintain their quality in baking these delicious pies.

Yelp
Great selection of Middle Eastern baked goods and everything thing was delicious. I wished they had the names of the breads in Arabic and English as well to not confuse costumers. But everything was delicious.

Mohammed S.

Yelp
My favorite pita bread in America . Always fresh, perfectly chewy and can be frozen without degradation.

Ilana V.

Yelp
The. Best. Pita. Ever. Delicious, warm, fluffy and just awesome. I buy and freeze them and they heat up so well! The falafel is fresh and delicious as well Honestly everything is so good.

Dalia H.

Yelp
If you need any bread or bakery items, this is the place. They have all the meat, spinach, cheese, and other pies you can think of.

Rania R.

Yelp
The service was great, they're Very friendly, generous. Their bakery is freshly made, taste from home.

Koury K.

Yelp
Probably one of the best in the area. We traveled about an hour twice to get some of their creations. Bread, mana2ish (cheese is the best) and many others... It is very traditional so get ready to eat without looking :) if you cannot eat food that was done with bare hands, this place is not for you.

Maria A.

Yelp
Horrible customer service, they sold me burt coconut cake and tried covering it up with katar. It's during the Holy month of Ramadan and their cheating their customers. I called to complain and the man on the phone pretty much said its my fault for not inspecting the sweets prior to me buying it. Why would I think my Muslim brother is going to cheat me?

Antaash U.

Yelp
Our favorite middle eastern bakery! My in-laws who live in Iowa stockpile their giant pita pockets each time they're in town because it's pretty much the only bread my FIL will eat! I'm not exaggerating when I say that they will buy 15-20 packets of the bread each time they come for a visit once a month. Alwatan has plenty of sweet and savory snacks as well. From falafel to meat and veggie friendly sandwiches, cookies and more. The one thing you must remember is that the bakery is wildly popular and in order to maintain freshness and the best quality to their customers, the bakery only makes what they will sell each day. That means that many things sell out, so procrastination doesn't work in your favor here. It's best to go early to make sure you get everything you want. Also, there's nothing quite like munching on freshly baked bread!

Naveed S.

Yelp
Went shopping and got a little hungry so went with friends recommendation and grabbed some snacks from here. If you want low carb this is not the place to go but if you want great taste, stop in here. We have the spice meat pies, chicken pies, and spinach pies. Also had a few other baked items. By far the best item was the spinach pie. I didn't have any of the desserts but they did had a good variety of baked cookies.

Zubair K.

Yelp
One of the best bakers of middle eastern goods in greater Chicagoland area. I enjoy eating all their items, specifically love the Zatar bread, date filled sesame sticks called Sananmaria and of course their spinach and meat pies are just as good. Definitely take home some of their bread and freeze at home, warm it up in the oven and it's just as good!

Mark A.

Yelp
I've been coming to this bakery for years. Their bread and baked goods are outstanding. The two stars here represents my disappointment with the bakery in not enforcing Covid related guidelines for mask wearing by employees at the counter. When counter staff are serving customers from open trays without a mask in the middle of pandemic, it makes you really wonder about the bakery's general health policies in general.

Helene K.

Yelp
One of my favorite middle eastern spots, it's a bakery. They always have the best wheat pita bread, and date cookies. Prices are not bad, they give you good amounts too. Try the pies! Spinach, chicken roll, and spicy beef are some of the best ones in my opinion. With all the bakeries around, they out do the rest. You can't go wrong buying here!! Staff is really nice too!

Wisal M.

Yelp
This place makes the best khobiz ishrak the state! I live in Ramallah and had a hard time finding Ishrak bread that is thin and stretchy the way it is made overseas. I will never purchase this type of bread from any other bakery excpet for this one again. I was so excited when I ate from it today. It was perfect! I can't wait to try out everything else they bake.

Yelp
Had lunch across the street and saw this and the Nut House had great reviews. This place was great and I would definitely make it a point to come here. Everything from fresh pitas, awesome assortment of cookies with sesame seeds which I love, dates, and jams. My favorite was the flat sesame cookies. Also got some zaatar bread, spicy meat, & spinach pies. Biggest surprise, the spicy meat pie, was made spicy with giardiniera! Although I wasn't familiar with most of the selection, it was fun to get 1 or 2 of everything and the staff was super nice!

Soraya K.

Yelp
We purchased some of their pita bread from Al Bawadi grill across the street from the bakery because we had it with our appetizers and loved it, then came to realize that the bread came from this bakery, according to the bag. It was hands down the BEST pita bread we've ever tasted...perfect fluffiness, yet not too "chewy". Highly recommend this bakery's bread to others. We plan on going back to buy more bread from here as well as sample other treats!

Kelly S.

Yelp
One of the best bakeries. It's always busy, so you know the turn over is fresh. Great spinach pies. Get some ma'amoul while you're there.

Saima K.

Yelp
Wow amazing place. Fresh pitas , the jalapeño topping pita bread is delicious. Friendly staff. Will def go there again

Mannar Y.

Yelp
The best in Chicago! Great service! Workers are gentlemen! And they always give my kids something for free! I never buy from anyone else! They have the freshest bread! If you pick out an old bag, they will tell you they have a fresh batch coming out! They are the most honest and hardworking bakery I've been to! Will never stop buying from them. I really cannot say anything bad about them.
