Yelp
For yeeeeears, I passed by Amanouz Cafe, a casual Moroccan restaurant, when I walked through the Northampton Center. It became harder and harder to walk by as good word of mouth turned into great Yelp reviews. But since I've never lived in the Northampton area, I always stuck with my favorite spots. Also, Amanouz Cafe was often very busy. I finally visited for a late lunch last weekend. Although I liked portions of my meal, I suspect Amanouz Cafe was having an off day.
There were three issues with my experience. First, I ordered a chicken tagine, and they gave me lamb tagine. Because the lamb was covered with stuff, I didn't even notice until I had a few bites of the non-meat parts. I was in a hurry and I like lamb, so I just kept it. I noticed that there were mix ups with orders at a couple other tables while I was there.
Second, the texture of the bone in lamb was tough. It seemed overcooked, but perhaps it was a tough piece as well.
Third, my table was cleared, but it hadn't been cleaned. I ordered and paid at the counter, and then I chose a table. Only one table had a bit of separation from other guests. After I sat, I noticed food patches had been left on the table.
Notwithstanding these hiccups, I saw enough that I would return. The rest of the tagine, which is essentially a stew with peas, olives, onions, dates or figs, etc., was very good. It was well seasoned. Warm flavors. Slightly sweet. Service and the atmosphere were both fine.
I've got to give 3 Stars based upon my experience, but I definitely plan to give Amanouz another chance.
