The Best Dishes in London Restaurants This Week, By Eater Writers | Eater London

"A no-fuss Brick Lane Bengali canteen ideal for mixed dietary groups, offering hearty bowls of rice and fish curries alongside standout vegetarian dishes — especially aubergines gently fried until they disintegrate, pre-marinated with mustard, coriander, cumin and garlic, finished with a generous scattering of fresh coriander. Plates are very reasonably priced (£4–£6), making it a practical, flavour-forward choice whether you’re vegan, pescatarian or feeding a crowd." - Feroz Gajia

The Best-Value Restaurants in East London Are Cheap, But Not Cheap Eats | Eater London

"The curry houses around Brick Lane can be quite overwhelming, especially with Adrian Chiles’ face endorsing no fewer than three identikit curry houses. Grinning across the road at each other are Amar Gaon and Cafe Spice, two of the few which cater to the local Sylheti Bangladeshi community without concession to British tastes for rich, Punjabi sauces. Their differences are reflected in disparate takes on the Bangladeshi/Bengali mashed staple of fish bortha — Cafe Grill’s is white and green, fresh, herbal, and vibrant, while Amar Gaon’s is heavier, pungent, and singing with the volatile aroma of mustard oil. Elsewhere, there are dishes that reflect the Bangladeshi love of river fish and seafood: chitol, pabda, hilsha, and the thousand voyeuristic eyes of tiny keski (silverfish) mas bursting in the mouth. Both restaurants are best experienced in a group so that multiple dishes can be ordered and enjoyed alongside shukti satni, an indispensable chilli paste charged with the taste of fermented fish." - Jonathan Nunn

Food was amazing. I love saag and vegetables and their paat shak/naali saag and sheem bharta (cow pea mash) are just amazing. Love their pabda fish and Boal fish jhol. They were a bit short staffed during busy lunch hour, so, I felt they were a bit stressed because of the delay and you could tell. Didn't like their comment when I asked which one was daal bhorta (because when mashed they look the same!!), but, they commented on my ethnicity. However the evening staff are much more polite, professional and efficient. Also the toilets were super clean!! Highly recommend for the authentic Bangladeshi food!

We came all the way from Canada for a short trip and got recommended to come visit Amar Gaon. As a fellow countrymen, this was a nice taste of home away from home. Friendly service, good taste and incredible value. Regardless of your background you should have a stop and sit-down. Highly recommend this place.

Went for an early dinner at this Bengali cuisine restaurant in the heart of Brick Lane. We were greeted by a member of staff who was a bit stern, but overall helpful. We found the ordering confusing as we went for the 'Special lunch offer for two' that included 1 meat curry, 1 chicken curry, 1 saag aloo, 2 portions of plain white rice, 2 cans of drinks for £24.99. The staff member then continued to show us all the curries they had and when we wanted to pick which meat and chicken curries we wanted he explained that they will pick it out for you, we thought that was confusing and strange. Every single dish was on the spicy side and we can certainly handle some decent spice level but these were over loaded with chilli! Overall the food was good and you get enough for two people. At the end the staff member did try to (slightly) overcharge, however this was quickly rectified. Brick Lane Mosque is one minute walk away which is super convenient.

Wow! Ma'sha'Allah what an experience! The service was lovely from the moment we walked in. We were helped with dishes to select and seated. It was a hot day and another gentleman kindly put the air con on for us without us even needing to ask! The whole place is immaculate, fresh and airy. And the food - every dish was perfect! Each was flavoured beautifully and had such a homely feeling. Finished with a perfectly brewed cup of tea ❤️ We will definitely return every time we're on Brick Lane - Thank you.

Came to this place after a lot of recommendations from food influencers. The restaurant is very clean and spacious, toilets are clean, cutlery is clean too and food presentation was nice. We were given water bottles as soon as we were seated and it was charged, I thought this was quite sneaky as we never asked for it and it was showcased at though its complimentary. Next, we saw a lunch time offer which seemed like a good deal but we were told we can't use it because we're not white and it was only targeted for white customers ... bit racist towards your own no? Then we went to choose curries and we were kept offering fish curries even though we reminded the man multiple times we're allergic to sea food. There was hardly any veg curries, we did order a bindi baazi but it was not nice at all and very mushy. We ordered a bengali roast but it was very sweet and contained an apricot seed. We ordered the naga chicken but we were presented with medium spice chicken curry cooked with pickle. Overall, I felt the food we cook at home was better. Maybe the fish curries would've been better but there was no lamb either. Bhortas were nice but again we've had better. Dont think we'll be coming again .

I really like the atmosphere and the smile of people but the simple food i ordered whuch is a very basic ,White rice/Bhorta platter/Daal,I was very disappointed to have the Shim bhorta,it was not even boiled properly, other bhortas were okey,I bet the meat and fish section might be better,I will go again to try them,Price wise i paid 22 pounds..little expensive than other Bangladeshi food places.. I liked the fish bhorta and mango lassi(try them).

I generally go across the road for my Deshi cuisine fix. I thought I would give this place a try. I did a take out of pabda, keski, borta platter, chicken roast, beef curry, chutki, nalli saag, fish row tenga and king prawn with water marrow. Everything tasted fantastic with lots of deep flavours. Only the Keski could do with more stronger flavour but other than that the flavours were fantastic and well seasoned. Thoroughly enjoyed it and no doubt will be back. Hope they can keep the consistency.

We needed to eat quickly and finding parking in Brick Lane we ran into Amar Gaon. Oh my goodness, the welcome was incredibly warm and accommodating, and the food was outstanding (they chose for us ☺️)...simply delicious. We'll definitely be back. Thank you again guys for the warm hospitality and amazing food.

Yelp
You could literally smell the delicious aromas as you walked down Brick Street. Like literally, my mouth was watering, and I couldn't wait to get in and try this place out. When we walked in, they said it was cash only, so we had to go grab some cash from the ATM across the street. We were back 5 minutes later, getting an explanation of all the goodies they had on display. They had a variety of meat dishes, fish dishes, and some vegetarian curries as well. They offered rice and paratha (like a south-Asian tortilla with cilantro, etc.). The service was amazing. They brought water to our table, kept checking in about the food, made conversations with us. The food was packed with flavor - and each curry was different than the rest. Both my husband and I had a wonderful time here and we are looking forward to visiting when we're back next!

Yelp
Everything about this restaurant is great. Authentic home cooked bangladeshi food. The service is always amazing, and they recently renovated the place so the ambiance is good too!
