18 New York Area Spots to Sip on Chardonnay This Memorial Day | Eater

"Nestled on the cusp of the Theater District, Amarone’s Scarlatto presents itself as a cozy indoor-outdoor trattoria. Reflecting the owners’ Italian heritage, the restaurant offers a delightful array of dishes that capture the essence of Italian cuisine, as well as a wine list featuring Harken Chardonnay. Order the Cozze al Vino Bianco (mussels in a white wine sauce), the Piccata al Limone (veal with lemon, white wine sauce, spinach, and roasted potatoes), or mushroom risotto, and you won’t be disappointed. With a warm and inviting ambiance, the restaurant makes everyone who walks through the doors feel right at home." - Julia Gómez Kramer

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Hidden Italian Gem Our experience at Amarone was absolutely incredible. From the moment we walked in to the last bite of dessert. The ambiance was warm and welcoming, setting the perfect tone for the night. We were lucky to have Sergio as our server, he was outstanding. Friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive, with excellent recommendations that made our meal unforgettable. The food? Next level. Every dish was flavorful, perfectly seasoned, and thoughtfully prepared. The chicken parmesan and rigatoni truly left us speechless, easily some of the best Italian food we’ve ever had. And just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, the crème brûlée arrived and completely sealed the deal. The texture, the flavor, the presentation was perfection. This place is more than just dinner; it’s an experience. Whether it’s date night, a celebration, or just craving quality Italian cuisine, Amarone is the spot. We’ll definitely be back. Highly recommend this is a hidden gem you don’t want to miss.

This little hidden Italian Gem is fantastic!! From the ambiance, the espresso martini, the appetizers, to the dessert, everything was beyond delightful. My sister and I dined here on a Tuesday night, Brian was our server (and bartender). We kindly had asked him if we can take our time throughout dinner as we had to kill time for a Broadway show we were seeing later on. He was so kind and accommodating and made sure we weren't going to be early and making sure we weren't late for our show! The prices were also very reasonable for the quality of food. Definetly recommend if you are looking for an Italian place to eat at in Hell's Kitchen! It's also a very convenient place to dine if you're going to show on Broadway (only like a 7/8 minute walk to Broadway1)

Very good! We had a reservation and arrived 10 minutes early and they had a table ready quickly! Very much appreciated since it is so cold outside! Chicken parm, bolognese, and salmon were great. Would recommend!!

This was a great small Italian joint that caught our eye and was totally worth stopping by. I highly recommend sharing some appetizers and trying their espresso martini. The staff is also incredibly attentive and knowledgeable about the menu, wine, and other facets of service. The highlight was the Chicken Amarone and the Arancini

We had dinner here before going to a Broadway show, which was very close to the theater we were going to. It was also my sister's birthday and they did up her dessert plate with a candle and happy birthday on the plate. The food was very good but our waiter was really what made it a great experience. He was attentive, helpful and patient. The pear salad was excellent as a starter. The rest of our dishes were good but I'm picky when it comes to Italian food. I tasted the salmon dish and thought it was delicious.

We dined around 7 p.m. on a Saturday night in late September. This is a hard review for me to write because the food we actually got was good, but the service was bad to an extent I have rarely experienced, and there seemed to be no management around to observe and help the server who was clearly struggling. It was busy, but not crazy, so I truly was expecting more. I hate to be so critical of the service when the dining room support staff (the gentleman doing bread and water service, and helping to run and clear food) were exceptional. They were like a dining room pit crew, it was just too bad they didn't have support from the servers and management. We never get everything we ordered, not even after reiterating it to the server at least four times. And not once did she ask if we wanted more drinks. She was so confused she tried to offer us dessert after we'd only had salad and seemed baffled when we kept trying to explain we'd never gotten our appetizer or entree. The salad was excellent as was the Rigatoni when we finally got it, I was just too hungry and frustrated to even take a photo of it. Other tables were also very frustrated, with one leaving in a huff, people clearly irritated at not being to get or pay their check (took way too long) and the table next to us had at least four bread baskets since no food was coming. I cannot imagine we would go back.

This quaint Italian restaurant on Ninth Avenue is a respite from the crowded and noisy eateries that the posh set dine at. The servers are warm, the food excellent and the ambiance transformative. Visit Italy in the city

WOW! This place was phenomenal! Took my wife here for a nice date night while visiting nyc and came across this gem! Amazing nyc food for a reasonable price! First-The restaurant was very clean. Small, but had a cozy, romantic and pleasant vibe to it. It smelled like fresh cooked food the moment you walked in. I made a reservation on open table and got there right on time and was promptly seated 5-10 minutes. While you wait they have a small bar available for drinks which I highly recommend! The staff was probably the best part. Extremely professional, funny, and you can tell they work hard. They all did an amazing job! Second- the food was out of this world! They have a decent sized menu with a lot of amazing dishes to choose from. Me and my wife started off with some salads. I got a Caesar and she got the same. You can tell it’s fresh homemade dressing and it wasn’t to heavy portioned, but was enough to cover the whole salad. For our meals I got the Fusilli Norcia (sweet and hot sausage) and it was honestly top 10 best Italian dishes I’ve ever had. It was a great portion size but not to much. It exploded with flavors and just fresh tasting ingredients. It was presented beautifully. My wife got the pappardelle bolognese and I think that was even better! Generous portion size and it tasted incredible. It was hard not to steal food off her plate! For dessert we got tiramisu and chocolate cake which both were delicious. And ended it with some hot coffee and cappuccino and they were great! My only issue was that there was a good amount of time between courses, so be prepared to wait a little. But for how good everything was. It was worth the wait! I HIGHLY recommend!

Yelp
While this spot looks a little touristy, the food and service were great! Our server was very enthusiastic which made us excited to try the specials. All the specials were fantastic!! The servers were very attentive and conversational. The restaurant at 10p on a Friday was not busy, a good spot for after a Broadway show and away from the chaos. Great spot for groups.

Yelp
Solid Italian spot in the city. Service was very friendly and they made you feel at home. Drinks were made well, especially the dirty and espresso martinis. Nice selection of bread for the table and the apps were great, we got the calamari and the antipasto. The chicken parm was very good - pounded super thin and a big portion. If you're a chicken parm lover - it's definitely worth checking out. We will be back for sure!

Yelp
service was a bit slow. great martinis and pasta though! it was in a convenient location we walked to it after seeing a show.

Yelp
They moved back to Hells Kitchen and the foods as good as it's always been. Cozy warm ambience sets the stage for another good meal. I love supporting family owned and this still is one of my favorites. Started with mussels that were cooked perfectly. Next up was Pasta Vongole. Plenty of clams in a spectacular white wine, olive oil sauce on top of Al dente pasta. Dinner wouldn't be complete with out a Chicken Parm which IMO is one of the best. No matter where they are in the city, this is still one of my favorites, the food is always good and now that they are close to the theater, it's perfect for a pre-theater dinner.

Iris R.

Yelp
Charming old school Italian restaurant Large menu at reasonable prices ( considering the location). Although they were very busy, we were well taken care of and the food was delicious and beautifully plated

Yelp
Let me start off by saying my wife & I had a wonderful 33rd Anniversary dinner at Amarone Scarlatto's. Great service & my wife truly enjoyed her Pumpkin Ravioli & her Mozzarella, Basil & Tomato Salad. I on the other was a little disappointed with my chicken parm dinner. Seemed a little lite with the mozzarella cheese. The best part of my meal was my Caesar Salad. We started off Arancini which was just ok. I'll give it 4 stars solely on our experience not on my food. One thing I will say was everything came out very hot. Enjoyed myself but I'll try another restaurant next time we are in NYC.

Yelp
Lovely atmosphere and most importantly: good food. I had the chicken parmigiana and was happy to see that it was not just a thin slice of chicken. Recently I ordered this elsewhere in separate restaurants and it was hard to find the chicken under the fried cover! The accompanying pasta was perfect too!
google avatar

Mary G.

Yelp
We were thirty minutes late for our reservation because of midtown traffic, but they still got us to the theater on time. I had a special that was fantastic - apple burrata ravioli. Would love to visit again.

Yelp
My trip to the City was planned months in advance along with my reservation to Amarone Scarlatto. Besides the array of, "must haves," when visiting New York such as bagels and pizza, the traditional Italian dinner entrees should also be on most lists. That said, I was looking forward to dining here given the solid reviews and the great ambience displayed in the pictures. Unfortunately, my experience fell a little short of my expectations. I arrived a little earlier than my reservation, but the folks there had my table ready available right away. The atmosphere was excellent from the decor, to the spacing of the tables and the care spent maintaining the restaurant. The service was exceptional with bread brought forth quickly and service throughout being very attentive by all. To start, I had a Caesars Salad. Very generous salad with a dressing that was tossed into the lettuce which was not overwhelming in the least. The service approach with the cheese atop was non-traditional, but it worked well with such a large portion. My entree was a linguine and lobster special which was equally generous. I had not expected to manually crack the lobster, but the inclusion of the shell added to the taste of the sauce along with the other shellfish that was included. Unfortunately, the sauce could have used additional seasoning as it was otherwise very mild in taste. Red pepper flakes might have helped, but my sense was that the pepper flakes would have been too much. Perhaps other herbs and garlic were a couple of things that were missing. This was the biggest reason for my rating. The entree was followed with a delightful looking NY cheesecake. When it came to the table, it was presented with additional sauces and a topping, but the appearance did not translate into its taste. The cheesecake was somewhat bland and on the dry side. Those who have rated Amarone with five stars was a huge enticement to my reservation. I had a great conversation with locals who had nothing but wonderful things to say about why they frequented as often as they do. Their thoughts did not translate to my experience this evening. I plan to give Amarone another try as I did see entrees around us with the depth of red sauce that I prefer and the service that I had was simply outstanding. If my dining experience is different for the next visit, I'll be sure to share the experience. Be well.

Yelp
If you are in NY visiting or just live in NY and you are looking for a amazing bite to eat, I highly recommend adding this authentic delicious restaurant to your must try itinerary ! The service, the food and the atmosphere was beyond amazing. The owner and his staff are attentive to the customers needs! I had the seafood pasta, every bite melted in my mouth. The seafood was fresh and it was flavored to perfection! I sat on the patio and people watched as the food satisfied my souls desires! I DONT THINK I have tasted like food this great in a very long time! EVERY-TIME I'm in NY I will be coming here!

Yelp
By far the best Italian food near Times Square! The restaurant has been in the family for years.

Robin Z.

Yelp
The food is incredible , the dining room was busy ,the staff very fun Italian mixed with no nonsense/polite you will be served with excellence atmosphere .. the food - homemade with very special flavors; no processed/microwaved dishes here , the sundried tomato bread dipping sauce; I saved the rest to pour over my main dish. Son's chicken Parmesan dinner was huge, all our dishes were lovely/tasty presentations & the lightest most delicate calamari prepared I've ever, ever had. From the wine to the dessert the staff happy & kind. They are busy so reservations are recommended

Adam S.

Yelp
The food was great. The ambiance was excellent. Not too loud, and able to hold a conversation with a semblance of intimacy. The service was attentive and prompt! The wine selection was a bit disappointing, but I won't hold that against the quality of the food I had the gnocchi scarlatto, my date the capellini scarlatto and that antipasta was definitely worth it.
google avatar

John E.

Yelp
Really nice location for personalized, authentic Italian food. The wine selection is good and the food is consistent with NY neighborhood, Italian restaurants. The olive oil and balsamic are premium and French bread is really fresh. Our meal - sweet Italian sausage and pink sauce was really good (Linguine Fusilli Norcia). We split this order and it was perfect for lunch

Yelp
- we would easily come back and eat here again! - the dishes pictured were 10/10. Great taste, came out hot. The only minus is that the chick pea part of the Polipo e ceci dish was dry, but the seared octopus was cooked to perfection so we didn't care - not pictured are two espresso shots which were perfect to give us some energy in Times Square - great service from multiple people! Very friendly staff

Yelp
Delicious food and nice ambience. Service was very good also. Reasonably priced. Highly recommend.

Yelp
We ate here before the dinner hour and it was great. Wonderful food, great service, nice menu. The apple tart with cinnamon ice scream was the best dessert I've ever had.

Graeme W.

Yelp
Excellent meal in a quiet and relaxed environment. Good service without always bothering you. The food however was the highlight. Good portions without being a massive any of pasta unlike some restaurants.

Jaime R.

Yelp
Food was excellent. The service was great. The restaurant was a little loud. The ambiance was very inviting. Prices are a little high, but well worth it We definitely go back again

Vanessa D.

Yelp
We came kind of late, but they serviced us still! It was great pasta & drinks. The pasta had the freshest taste & the drinks came out great! The service was amazing as well. Loved the ambiance of this place! Would definitely return.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing!!! My mom had a great birthday there. Delicious food, modest prices comparing to other restaurants in NYC, great service and beautiful ambient. Will definitely go back! Grazie mille!

Yelp
Decided to try Amarone since we had a taste for Italian food and it was close to the theatre for our Broadway show. Received a friendly greeting by the host and waitress. Everyone worked together. Somehow our waitress forgot our fresh bread. As soon as we requested some bread, someone was brought it to our table immediately. Great service. Okay, let's talk about the food. I think great service is very important. The bread was soft and taste ok. Nothing special. Our Caesar salad was good. The lasagna was absolutely delicious. It had thin layers of fresh pasta and each layer topped with a delicious sauce. One of the best lasagnas I've ever had. Reasonable prices. Will visit again.
google avatar

Yelp
I came here with a meet up group after seeing a play. I had a veal dish and Panna cotta for dessert. The food was excellent, very well prepared. Servers were efficient and graceful. Would definitely go back.

Yelp
Bottom line up front: check the store name and menu before going in. I think Amarone NY and Scarlatto merged and now have a different menu. Read on for more details. Broadway trip with my daughter and needed dinner in between shows. Here's how it went: The Good: - arrived right at 5pm on a Wednesday and got seated right away - decor and cleanliness was terrific - staff was very polite and friendly; a guy I assume was the manager came up personally to ask how things were going - Ordered the fettuccine portofino and the gnocchi sorrentina: both were delicious, hot, and came quickly; scallops in the portofino were done correctly and not too tough - bread on the table was delicious The Not So Good: - pictures on Yelp showed a different place, menu, and prices. So when we sat down I thought I must have missed a smaller door that led to the other restaurant. NOPE. I think Amarone NY and Scarlatto must have merged because they now have one awning with both names. Because of this, the menu has changed and is more expensive than the older Yelp pics. I'm uploading new menu pics to show what is there now. - and yes I checked. The menu pics show Amarone, my receipt says Scarlatto. - took a long time to get attention of staff to get the check Bottom line: good food. Service mostly good. Prices way too high for amount served. I'd come back for the taste if someone else decided to foot the bill.

Michael T.

Yelp
Have been going to Amarone restaurant for years and the food, wine selections and service had been impeccable. Went to Amarone on 3/8/25 and had the worst experience. We had a reservation for 4 people but when we arrived the staff did not acknowledge us for a full 5 minutes. We saw the host texting on his phone before realizing we were there. The quality of the food definitely wasn't as good as it used to be..... In the past, I have ordered the Branzino and always got the whole fish (both fillets). This time I ordered the Branzino and got one fillet (half of the fish) with a very paltry piece of orange, slice of onion and slice of tomato. It was quite shocking to say the least. They totally brought the wrong meals for two out of the four of us and were quite indifferent about it. Finally their selection of wines used to be good quality Italian wines at reasonable prices. Although the wine selection was decent, you would have to get a bank loan to afford many of their bottles. What we noticed on the menu sign as we were leaving the restaurant is Amarone is under new management. That explains everything........

Yelp
Wonderful brunch spot on the upper west side! We went and sat outside on an oddly warm winter day with our little puppy. The host/waiter/extraordinaire provided great service and accommodations. The brunch menu was limited however we were glad to hear the lunch pre-fixe was offered $17 per person for three course is an amazing deal! We ordered the meatballs, minestrone soup, and for entrees the eggplant parm (delicious!) and the Pollo alla griglia. And to top off, the tiramisu was one of the best! (Better than the one I make!). Highly recommend, especially if you want a satisfying brunch (that is not your typical eggs on the run).
google avatar

Ron R.

Yelp
Cozy little place out of the fray. Service is inconsistent. We ordered CACIO E PEPE 4/5, VITELLO SALTIMBOCCA 3.5/5 (good flavors, but dry), cheese cake 2/5 (we didn't care for the ricotta). Good wine by glass choices.
google avatar

Rickey C.

Yelp
Really nice spot. Staff was wonderful. Nice wine list. Excellent old school Italian dishes. Simple but really good.

Avé-Maria N.

Yelp
Spaghetti was okay but dessert was good. Atmosphere was okay they gave us unlimited bread.

Brian T.

Yelp
Very basic sauce, undercooked pasta, ,sub par service. The bread was the best part. It was a slow night, but it's no excuse.
google avatar

Cyndi L.

Yelp
Delicious food and wine !! I don't eat meat so they made a cheese ravioli and it was divine. Paired with a Malbec and I was in heaven.
google avatar

Bonnie H.

Yelp
Delicious food, elegant surroundings and attentive service. We had Caesar salad, spaghetti with meatballs, gnocchi and cheesecake. It was all great
google avatar

Greg A.

Yelp
Excellent Italian, friendly service, inviting atmosphere. The pasta and tomato sauce are top notch.
google avatar

Ani P.

Yelp
This place is pretty good, ambiance is quite authentic old New York Italian. So you won't be seeing a trendy young crowd here, but the food and service was great. The Arancini was not that good, but the main dishes we had were delicious. We had the ravioli and chicken entree, both were very buttery but had great flavor profiles! Drinks were tasty too!
google avatar

Andy F.

Yelp
They were able to accommodate us without a reservation even though they were busy. The service was great, and the food was exceptional. Well worth the price.
google avatar

Eric G.

Yelp
The UWS has plenty of Italian restaurants with hair-free pasta and good customer service. I was looking forward to another one. Sadly, Scarlatto tripped on even this low bar. Tonight I found a long hair in my pasta. The manager insisted that it couldn't have come from their staff, even though I picked up my food, have short hair and wasn't eating with anyone else. Were aliens involved? Star Trek transporters? More obscenely, the manager refused to whip up a new dish (I live around the corner), telling me to pound sand and go work out a refund with Uber Eats.
google avatar

Marcelle M.

Yelp
We entered the restaurant 10 minutes before closure so maybe it was a poor decision on our part, the staff was definitely quick to serve us and very attentive but the food had mixed reviews. For appetizers we got eggplant Fritters and caprese both very fresh. The pasta w Clams was rather dry I was expecting a wine or garlic sauce but the pairing of clams did not give enough flavor. The rigatoni and orechiatte we're average and had nice sauces.

Michael W.

Yelp
This was the second time I have tried to enjoy this location. The food unfortunately is amazing but with the service I was provided both times... I won't be going back. I believe in giving people a chance and having an off day but this visit was worst than the last.

Olivia S.

Yelp
Romantic Italian restaurant. Food was delicious and the waiters are excellent. I will definitely visit this place again.

G D.

Yelp
After the Broadway matinee, we decided on an early dinner. I had dined at Scarlatto's preCovid and decided to return. We were seated in a corner and ordered our meals. The food was good, but the service was POOR! The waitress never returned to our table after taking our order. No one refilled drinks-neither water nor tea/soda. No one came to ask how the meal was even though the man at the bar could clearly see glasses were empty! I will go to Little Italy if I want a good meal and service.

Jon S.

Yelp
Extremely cold. Asked to turn off ac, would not do it and would not move us to a new table. All 5 of us had to wear coats and sweaters Then charge us a cc fee at end without notice. Food was so-so Waiter was excellent though I won't be back Far better experiences and food in mid town Manhattan
google avatar

Mary Beth S.

Yelp
HK local. Service was great! The food bland, no flavor. We took a bite of the bread that tasted like it was a week old. Boyfriend ordered the Chicken parmigiana with spaghetti and I ordered the seafood pasta both very bland and no flavor. We ordered one cucumber cocktail, no liquor and all ice in the cup. I won't be returning and I don't think you should go here either. I hope for the best for Scarlatto.
google avatar

Troy M.

Yelp
Lasagna, eggplant, and tiramisu were amazing. Highly recommend Amarone Scarlatto. Reservation recommended.
google avatar

Claudia F.

Yelp
2.5/5 - came here for late dinner. I was hyped because the menu looked great, but the food was average. The bread they serve before your meal is cold - we asked them to warm it up and it was soooooo much better... they should just do that for every serving. I got the ravioli and i don't know, there was something missing. Wasn't very flavorful and it was lacking saltiness. I will say that the plates come out suuuper fast, but i was there for the vibes and it was just all too quick.
google avatar

Chia Yuan W.

Yelp
The effect flower shaped ice cream is very nice visually however takes too long. Ice cream itself is delicious.
google avatar

Joselyn P.

Yelp
Wow, almost past up this gem because it looked empty and had open slots for reservations. So glad we are here, excellent food and service. I am picky but no complaints here. We were served quick and the portions were perfect. I like finishing my food (I had my two fav bronzino & broccoli rabe. Rabe was a tad salty) & I was able to. My friend couldn't finish her chicken parm (a little tough) she took a doggy bag. Hubby had veal parmigiana, enjoyed the rosemary & speed but a little tough.
google avatar

Alyssa S.

Yelp
I don't like this place as much as my partner does, but there are some very good dishes here. This time I enjoyed the Amarone royale, which is like a kir with Amarone. The fava bean salad Was exceptional. It was perfectly seasoned, and the olives, red peppers, And especially the fava beans were extremely Delicious. I think I have gotten the Amarone salad before and Not been so impressed. I got the tuna special this time on the recommendation of the waiter, And it was not that exciting. The flavors were very similar to the father beans salad, with olives and tomatoes. And I wasn't a huge fan of how that tuna was cooked. But my family loves the chicken and the veal Parm here, and it's a cute atmosphere, even if a little crowded, on ninth Avenue. Remains a standby for us in NYC.

Yelp
Welcome from Tom started this dinner off on the right foot! We all ordered salad and main course. All fresh and tasty! The photos speak for themselves! Nice outside seating in front of the restaurant and the help was very attentive! Give it a try... you'll be happy! We were!
