The Allure of Hoboken’s Roast Beef and ‘Mutz’ | Eater NY

"I now see the hero loaf coming from Amato’s Bakery in nearby North Bergen, which has replaced Dom’s as Fiore’s bread source." - Robert Sietsema

The best sandwiches and the staff is so nice!

I just want to appreciate the immaculate cross-section of this sandwich I ordered. It's beautiful. That's it, really. I don't know for sure if the fresh bread makes all the difference, but I appreciate it a lot

Google
Come here often for great sandwiches and to buy their panella and semolina knots. Family owned!

Google
The best chicken cutlets anywhere, made perfectly every time. Great old-school, bakery/deli. Fresh Italian bastones, loaves, and rolls. Italian cookies and pastries. Great catering. This family takes pride in what they do and their creations are works of art.

Google
The best bread, sandwiches, cold cuts and fresh Mozz around. Love giving business to a family business like this. Easy to do when they are the best around!!

Meridith N.

Google
Absolutely hands down the best deli in Bergen County! This family owned business is superb and they really make you feel special each time you enter the store. The chicken cutlets are unbeatable! Everything they make is star quality! - meri

Google
I absolutely cannot tell you how delicious their bread is. I’m so glad I found it. I haven’t tried any of the sandwiches yet. Eggplant is delicious as well as their fresh mozzarella.

Yelp
Apparently they make their own bread and mozzarella cheese here. You can tell because both are very delicious. I came here on a Saturday around 11:00 a.m. and there was a line out the door which is always a good sign for how good a place is about to be. They have a menu with about 30 sandwiches on it but I decided to make up my own sandwich. I'm not eating fried foods at the moment so I went with grilled chicken, roasted red peppers, broccoli rabe and fresh mozzarella on a semolina seeded bun. The sandwich was Devine. At first I didn't think I was going to be able to finish it because it was almost a footlong. But once I got home and started eating it, it was clear that this sandwich was getting taken down. I cannot wait until I'm off my diet and I will be back to have a chicken parmesan hero from this place. The sandwich was about $15 which is not bad these days. I would definitely return here for many years to come. A true authentic Italian deli.

Yelp
Best fresh mozzarella, cold cuts, Italian pastries, fresh breads and heros/sandwiches on this side of the Hudson. Love this family owned business. Be sure to take home some thinly-cut, freshly fried eggplant -- and ABSOLUTELY some of their home-made mozzarella. FABULOUS!

B T.

Yelp
Best Italian heros. Best bread. Great baked goods. Fresh mozzarella. All served by the nicest family you ever want to meet. Their fried chicken cutlets are the best I've ever had......and I'm a serious NY, Yonkers, Bronx, aficionado!

Yelp
Pass by all the time and never went in until today. No bread smell. Asked for ciabatta rolls said none. Asked for loaf said yeah. Two loaves cost me $10? Got home found it wasn't ciabatta and hard bread. BTW, store had a sign said three people in store at a time. Waited for someone to leave before entering. Noticed a man with two little girls plus someone came in after me with two little girls and two more people. No one said anything. Never again! Stay as far as possible!

Yelp
Today's review takes us to the Bergen/Rockland border at Amato's Bread of Northvale. Amato's is on a busy street and you may drive right past if you're not paying attention. But make sure to stop in for one of their many sandwiches. Amato makes their own bread and has a taste that is unique. It almost had a biscuit flavor on the outside and had a little more salt than most bread I've tried. I myself liked it, my wife, not so much. But what we did agree on was that the fresh mozzarella was really good. Super creamy with lots of flavors. As with most delis that have a big sandwich business it was lighter on the salt because of the salted meats. Just a pinch of salt was all it needed. And of course, I had to try the St Joseph pastry when I saw them in the display case. The sign read they were cannoli and custard. But there was only one of each left and I was worried that maybe they had been sitting around (the worst thing is a stale zeppole). That didn't last because I was really happy to hear the owner tell the other person working with him to make 4 fresh ones. They had fresh zeppole behind the counter uncut and not filled. I was more than happy to wait a few minutes as the person cut and piped in the fillings. The cannoli had a nice flavor to them and the zeppole was super fresh (I think the zeppole itself was the freshest I've had). I've read that their Cannoli have been named best in Bergen County but I think their custard pastry was the winner of the pair. It was a thick custard with a great taste, there was also no odd flavor additive that sometimes is put in custards. So if you're in the area definitely stop in for their fresh mozzarella and a fresh St Joseph Pastry you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
I haven't had their sandwiches, but their cannolis and bread are on point. I used their seedless italian bread for apple cinnamon french toast Christmas morning, and the bread was wonderful. It was nice and light and was not hard. The cannolis they fill there for you. I also want to mention that this place is family owned.

Yelp
Amazing food and a great family. You will be hard to find a better bakery with amazing Italian specialities! The cannoli are jerseys best!!

Yelp
Delicious local, family-run bakery specializing in authentic Italian delicacies. My last stop was for pignoli cookies over the holidays. Any of their pastries come highly recommended. Delicious! Have also heard good things about their fresh mozzarella, although I've never tried it. If the local buzz is anything to go by, it's worth it as well. As the name might suggest, their specialty is their bread. It really is that good - fresh baked and just right. Makes the perfect vehicle for any of their sandwiches. Friendly owners and good experience overall.

Yelp
The best bread and sandwiches. wish we had an amatos deli in Charleston sc. My daughter who lives in Chicago has her sister from bring her a sandwich from amatos when she comes to visit.

David P.

Yelp
Amazing service food is excellent. Must say by far best deli I've ever had. Great service and food!

Yelp
Not many genuine local bakeries around anymore. This place has awesome bread and pastries. CANNOLI, BABY!

Yelp
Had been frequenting this business quite often until I finally had enough of the poor customer service and attitude towards a friendly and polite customer...I actually tried to discuss the issue with them after the final incident, (something was left off, so I politely asked if I could take it on the side, but they wanted to argue that it wasn't on the ticket originally, even though I know what was ordered...) begrudgingly, they ultimately gave the oil and vinegar, but claimed they didn't want to waste another container so they asked for dish back...anyway, they didn't really care :( seemed as if they possibly don't want to have new customers for some reason???.. many items quite good though

Iliza R.

Yelp
I ordered bread and I was told to come back in an hour. I did. I waited on a 30 minute line to be told none of the items were ready. I expressed that I had been waiting and asked why I wasn't notified sooner that my order wasn't even close to being done. As I'm asking for information one of the girls behind the desk very rudely confronted me. I was apparently rolling my eyes. Number 1 in customer service is to never be confrontational to a customer. 2, is to be apologetic when an issue arises like lack of communication. I was not being rude I was expressing lack of customer service on their part. I've worked retail most of my life and I've never talked to anyone like that. Disgusting.

Yelp
Hands down- THE BEST fresh mozzarella, and their sandwiches and sauces are outrageously delicious too!

Nicole M.

Yelp
Great food and sandwiches. Most often I've bought bread, grilled chicken, chicken cutlet and fresh mozzarella and it's all delicious. This is my go to spot for a prepared sandwich every time I'm going to a Yankee game - chicken cutlet and mozzarella. Several of my friends and family get the Fuhgetaboutit (eggplant) and RAVE about it, I would guess its their best seller. Family owned business, the people working there are always very nice.

Yelp
This Deli is unique for a few reasons - First they make their own delicious home made bread. A sandwich on their bread is so good it really is better than any other bread in town! Another reason they are unique is they sell home made baked goods like cookies and cannoli. They also sell fresh pastas as well as some groceries and dried pastas from Italy. During the holidays they usually have Kinder eggs with toys inside and other chocolates from Europe. My favorite part about bis deli is the way they make the sandwiches - their Italian combo has just the right amount of cold cuts and cheese - other delis over do it and it ruins the flavor.

Yelp
Nothing to write home about....The service was ok, and the other than the pretentious smile, and custom salad, I wasn't a big fan. I might have made a better salad with my eyes closed. Then again, I wasn't necessarily someone that would have fit in to start off with. My colleague always gets sandwiches here, he likes them but not their service. Go figure.

Susan D.

Yelp
I tried this place on several occasions and stopped going. The sales staff can't count to 12. As the cookie boxes are closed before being presented to you, you don't know about this until you get home. And don't ask for anything by its Italian name, unless you like blank stares. (Zuppa Inglese, anyone?) You'll be better served at Sorrento in Lodi.

Yelp
Amato Bread is one of my favorite places anywhere ever. I don't live in the area -- actually a couple hundred miles away. But I pass through on the way to other parts east and several years ago stumbled across Amato. Since then I stop every time I possibly can. Favorites: - any of the sausage/cheese breads. Oh my. - the black and white cookies. My favorite anywhere -- rich buttery cookie base with rich and intense vanilla and chocolate icing halves. - lemon cookies -- fresh and refreshing with yummy hard icing. - the subs -- we always get the same two, Mr. Betz (cold cuts) and Grant Me a Wish (thin slices of fried eggplant layered with prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, and drizzled with balsamic vinegar). Excellent sub rolls, fresh and chewy. The eggplant sub is, and I don't say this lightly, among my most favorite sandwiches anywhere. If I had to find one fault, and it is a minor one, the drink selection (especially diet) is a little slim. But I don't care -- stop here as many times a year as we can. Great family run place, deserves more Yelps!

Francisco V.

Yelp
My whole company comes here, is the go-to place every lunch. The family keeps it running friendly and tasty, you will NEVER be hungry after one of these heroes! Just love the place, 100% recommended! Ingredients are fresh, the bread, my god the BEST BREAD, SO fresh you can taste it! Have a classic, Chicken Parm or La Bella Vita! you will enjoy each bite!

Yelp
I really like this place. The sandwiches and Italian cookies are delicious (my favorite sandwich is the Roofer's Special). The business is family-run, so there is a "homey" feel. They treat you nicely, and eveything is very fresh. I've heard customers conversing in Italian, which must mean it's authentic!

Kathy F.

Yelp
The bread...the fresh mozzarella...the cold cuts...vodka sauce...cannolis...heart-shaped cookies (stuffed with raspberry jam)...EVERYTHING IS SO, SO GOOD!! Just love absolutely everything about this little gem -- from the owners to the sandwiches. Their menu is extensive and funny (with memorable names) and their catering is outstanding too. So worth the stop if your in the Northvale area. If you have a big order -- call ahead and you can run in/out in two minutes. Love...LOVE...L O V E this place! You will too!

Restaurant R.

Yelp
The best sandwiches and bread in NJ. Homemade mozzarella, eggplant, broccoli rabe, and other Italian foods are also incredible.

Matt L.

Yelp
I go for lunch once in awhile from work. They have great salads and sandwiches. Everything is generally good. Staff is nice and friendly as well.

J G.

Yelp
I have only recently been introduced to Amato Bread and so far so good. Staff were patient while I looked over the sandwich menu and did not charge extra when I added to the sandwiches! Both were fresh, delicious and worth the trip. My second and third visits were equally worth it! Check this place out

Scott M.

Yelp
Without a doubt, far and away, the most tender, perfectly seasoned, still warm fresh mozzarella anywhere. It's so fresh that it takes the shape of the to go container by them time you get it home. Their breaded eggplant is the correct thickness, again constantly fresh, delicious. Their bread is great! Multiple options, sausage bread, semolina, they make these little puff pastries with leeks and feta that are top notch. My kids can't get enough of the rice balls and unless they start doing delivery it can't get much better. Highly recommended.

Yelp
I come here a few times a month and lately its been at least once a week. The bread is the best in Bergen County. My family keeps adding to my list of must buy for them every time I go. With our daughter home from college I have been here almost daily this past two weeks. You would think she hasn't eaten since she left for college, she has been an eating machine! The eggplant cutlets, chicken cutlets and grilled chicken are all as good as my own. Once I tried them, I stopped making them myself. It used to take me hours to fry all those cutlets as my family would eat them as fast as I was making them! Now I just go to Amato's and order a bunch to take home. The homemade mozzarella is FABULOUS! Very milky, creamy, soft and delicious. The best of any Italian deli within 50 miles. Other great options are their tuna salad, rice balls, broccoli rabe, roasted peppers, roasted marinated artichokes with the stem and the cannoli's YUM...

Chris C.

Yelp
Love the sandwiches- particularly the ones with eggplant in them (Cinfully Delicious and Fuggedaboutit). Subs are quite big- unless you have a big appetite, the rolls will be big enough.

Steve S.

Yelp
Best food of my life.

Stella P.

Yelp
Amazing fresh food from a family run business. I love this place, it's such a comforting standby. They make a lot of their sandwich ingredients on premises. I recommend the mangia te questo sandwich and roofers special sandwich! The sub size is definitely enough for two meals. I also love their cannolis. They always get my phone orders right.
