Amatsu

"Amatsu is perhaps the best Japanese eatery in Ghent. Authentic Japanese fare in a characteristic low-key interior. The teriyaki salmon with a subtle soy and sesame sauce unveils and highlights the chef’s skill and talent and for a close-up view of his high-flying dexterity, opt for a table in the first room to see him crafting sushis with less well-known fish. Fine selection of sakés. The lush green patio is heaven for alfresco dining." - Michelin Inspector

The presentation of the food looked nice, and the service was quick and efficient. However, the price is a bit steep for the quality of food. For instance, we ordered chicken gyoza, and only had 3 dumplings for €10– we have had better gyoza at other establishments with double the amount for the same price. I enjoyed the duck with mustard soy sauce, but the price made the dish overall underwhelming. I do appreciate that there are so many side dishes and rice included, and the pickles were especially tasty— clearly homemade and a tangy flavour.

I tasted the chef's special, 16 pieces of sushi & nigiri and Vegetable & shrimp tempura. It was a nice experience accompanied by hot sake. Maybe I would have been more satisfied if there was no surumi in the Sushi set. It's worth the price you pay.

They awet the mood from the door. The place is great for intimate meetings and also groups. They take your coat, which is nice as their chairs are quite low and a trench coat would be touching the floor. The service is just right for freshly, handmade food. It’s definitely worth the price point. They also take the time to explain the dishes and the staff are so professional. TLDR: nice ambience, pricey but worth it, impeccable service.

Staff were super nice and the food was extremely delicious. Highly recommend picking any of the menus. The vegetarian one was great!

One of the best japanese restaurants I had the pleasure to dine at. It's more on the pricier side but the quality and taste are totally worth it. We even got a little surprise since one of us had their birthday the day we visited. Just make sure to plan ahead since a full menu can take up 2 to 3 hours (starters, main course, etc.).

Great place, great food. For a first time visit, definitely go for the full menu with sake. You won't be disappointed. The second time, dig deeper into their choice of sushi and try more specialised sake. Nice and cosy terrace, weather permitting

The sushi was quite nice and fresh. The sake we had was amazing. However the curry was a total disappointment. Overall we felt it was way too expensive.

A very nice Japanese restaurant. The sushi and warm courses were well-prepared and delicious and the waiters were kind and attentive. In addition, everything here is very reasonably priced: we payed 110€ for a menu of four courses, two sushi courses, a nice bottle of German Riesling and sparkling water. In sum, I can definitely recommend this place if you like Japanese food 😊

Yelp
We found this place by walking the city, and were told to stay away from the chains. The menu looked solid, so we went in. The setting is nice, minimal and modern, but definitely with a Japanese flair. The service is fine, the sushi bar looks fine, everything is accessible. The first thing we noticed (as frequent travelers to Japan) was that they did a proper table setting and later, the starters that came with our dinner were also what we are used to getting in Japan. This is nice, considering most places don't put so much thought into it, or even bother. The sushi was perfect, as was the chicken teriyaki. I am only giving this restaurant a 3-star rating for three reasons: 1- it was overpriced. 2- the menu was underwhelming. When I say this, I mean that it was VERY traditional and had no imagination. Most of the options were prixe fixe, and although there were many to choose from, there was not a lot of room for personalization. 3- an addition to 2- customers can NOT order sashimi a la carte. I trust NO sushi restaurant the first time around, and was not about to leave my chirashi or sashimi choices to chance. This place is definitely a good one, albeit a bit on the expensive side for what normally costs FAR less in actual Japan. If you just want really great fish and not too many frills, definitely go here. But if you want crazy rolls and Tekkadon, best check the other options.
