What Would a Non-Whole Foods Amazon Grocery Store Even Look Like? | Eater

"Designed around convenience and speed, these small-format outlets focus on prepared foods and grab-and-go items for shoppers who use the company’s checkout-free technology; they have also been criticized for not accepting cash, which limits payment options for some customers." - Jaya Saxena

Google
Amazon GO is like a futuristic convenience store, and I’m super excited about the potential for this to become more common in the future, especially with the advancement of AI. The idea is so cool - when you walk into the store, you just scan your app or scan the palm of your hand or insert your credit card and start shopping. How convenient is that? I’ve always had a great experience here. The employees are always so helpful and friendly. I’ve been coming here a lot for years, I don’t have complains. There were snacks, water bottles, and coffee makers everywhere. The whole store was full of sensors and cameras to keep an eye on you. There were no tellers at the checkout counter. Instead, you’ll get a pending transaction when you leave. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this store doesn’t meet the same fate as the others in Manhattan. I really hope Amazon doesn’t let it shutdown all the project

I had a wonderful experience at this store! The cleanliness was immediately noticeable. I like when I walk into the store everything was well-organized and spotless. I was especially impressed with the quality of service I received from Shaun. He was welcoming. Also, he was attentive, professional, and went out of his way to ensure I found exactly what I was looking for. Speaking of which, the food item I came in for was in stock and easy to locate, which made my day even better.

5/19/25 - 8:10a today was the first time I stepped into an Amazon Go store, primarily to activate the Amazon One account my heath care institution "forced" me to create. The gentleman on duty (I wish I'd caught his name; I will update with his name when I go back) was fantastic (7/7/25 Update: His name is Shaun, and he's awesome!). He was extremely courteous, professional, and super helpful in not only directing me how to sign up for Amazon shopping to access the Amazon Go store but also in accessing and activating up my Amazon Go account. Since I was there, I also bought some food. Everything was fresh, and the store was clean and bright. Excellent first-time experience.

AMAZON GO is a high tech futuristic convenience store powered by Jeff Bezos. Never question why their shares are the highest in the market. Upon arrival, scan your application/palm or insert your cc and shop. Nobody checked our temperatures or followed you to find out if everything was going well. Snacks, water bottles and coffee makers were prominently displayed. The entire store was equipped with sensors and cameras to monitor each movement. No tellers on the way out. Instead, you will get a pending transaction when you leave. Kudos to Amazon for developing an algorithmic activation that could ally even more during this period of autonomy. That will certainly enhance the experience of the overcrowded airport.

Google
Don't expect anything special. Prices are higher than Target's for food, you'd expect them to be lower since their labor and sq ft is substantially less. The selection of food is about the same as your local Bodega, just a lot more pretentious ( a $7.00 pb&j? Seriously?) This is basically a walk in vending machine. Keep on walking and support a buisness that actually adds value to a neighborhood.

Google
This is a convenience store, similar to a 7-11 store. The difference between this store and a regular convenience store is that after you down load an app and put your credit card number in you don't have to stop at the cashier. In fact there are no cashiers. You just get the items you want, put them in a bag and leave. Amazon Go has various sandwiches, drinks and snacks. The prices are in line with other convenience stores . Its fun to try out the store and shows where retailing is going.

Google
Amazing experience, and so easy. Highly recommend for small items, like a normal convenience store. I had samon and vegetables and was very fresh and tasted amazing. Well done Amazon!

Yelp
Amazon Go Lexington Ave location experience was super amazing! This is the way shopping should be! Friendly greetings, no check out lines, no long lines, no crowds, extremely convenient. If you have a question, you can ask the staff, that is available to help. Love the Amazon lockers for fast delivery of orders. You will have a great experience. Definitely recommend! Hope they open more of these locations in the NYC metro area.

Yelp
Convenient to the Lexington & 53rd St Train station, and some good deals there to drive business. A plus is that they currently offer a $2 off $5 purchase if you bring your Amazon return here. A lot of ready made food choices, drinks, candy, lattes, etc. The Service is great if you have setup an Amazon account. Just walk right out with your purchase in your bag and they add receipt in Amazon account. Otherwise just use card at exit. They will calculate what you bought without dealing with any staff.

Yelp
I'm trying to like Amazon go. This is the second location I've visited. I'm just not the type to enjoy a meal or coffee on the run. I realize some of the modern business models don't work for me. I prefer a small business "where everyone knows your name!" If you work in the neighborhood you may appreciate this location. I'm sure the fans of Amazon are happy it's here.

Yelp
I really wasn't going to write this review, but I was prompted by Yelp to write something, so here goes. I was looking for a particular item and had Googled it to find that possibly I could get it here. Excited, I had 10 mins before my bus, so I decided to run in. Bad idea! On entering, I was confronted by a barrier that wouldn't move, and the place was deserted. After a couple of minutes, the barrier doors suddenly flung open, as if by magic, and in I went. All of a sudden, some guy in a brown uniform appeared and rudely told me to get back out. I said that the doors had opened; I didn't force anything! Talking over me, he told me that I needed an Amazon Prime account to come in. I explained that I didn't have one, so he barked "credit card?" at me. I said that I had nothing on me at all. Then I saw the notice that said I would need to have a palm print taken! I mean, come on! Are these people serious? I have the Gestapo on me, and I have to give up the rights to my firstborn just to look around? I told him that I didn't need the drama and exited. I won't be back!

Yelp
I spotted this grocery shop in the cab to the hotel and made a mental note to visit. I'm always interested in different applications of technology and in new forms of retailing. I had long ago downloaded the app, Amazon Go, which as the name implies is separate from the Amazon or Whole Foods apps. The app on-boards the user through the process; it is brief, perfect for when you are in the store. To enter the store, I scanned the two-dimensional barcode on this app (similar to the Starbucks payment app) to pass through the turnstile. After that point, I could have picked up snacks, drinks, some household essentials, etc. I was tempted by the DKA kouign amanns and Magnolia Bakery cupcakes but somehow resisted. Given the location on prime Midtown real estate, I expected pricing to be higher. Instead, they were quite reasonable. Once I was done, I could leave without checking out in the traditional way. That is, checkout was automatic (à la Minority Report). Later, I received a digital receipt. There are attendants available to help shoppers understand the process, including the very important tip to not pass merchandise to the purchaser. From what I've read, Amazon uses computer vision, artificial intelligence, and sensors to validate what shoppers' purchases. I was so impressed I returned the next day - 2 visits in 3 days.

Yelp
Walked past this AmazonGo store, right by the 6,E 53rd Street and Lexington stop. What a great location and find! Very few people there near closing time. Was a great place to get some snacks and cold drinks. Easy to scan the Amazon app code at the turnstiles and then grab and go. You just put the items in your own bag or take their orange AmazonGo reusable bag. You can also put the item back into the shelf if you change your mind. It knows to deduct it from your virtual cart. Just don't pass items to your friends unless you want to treat them too. They had prep sandwiches, salad bowls, drinks in the fridge, beer, boxed baked good from select bakeries. They also have meal kits and raw meat items. What a fun and fast place to grab some snacks and groceries!

Yelp
Several days later, we are still mystified by how this store works. You walk in, pick what you want and walk out. It's that easy. Seriously. My husband had downloaded the app a while ago, so when we passed by we decided to pop in. He scanned me in as his guest and then scanned his phone again for himself. We browsed around for a bit, each had one item and walked out. I'm guessing they aren't stocking as much d/t COVID as we saw some empty shelves, but we still found a snack and a drink we wanted without a problem. Prices are on par with other drug stores or bodegas but you have the ease of not checking out. I know fans of small businesses hate this. We are big on shopping local, but this was just so easy and also kind of fun. They did have one employee hanging out in the back, I'm sure his main job ends up being people asking how the magic works. Obviously not a place to do your grocery shopping, but it makes it just sooo easy to grab a snack or drink!

Yelp
This is a very convenient shop. You don't need a cashier at all and the environment is clean. When you want to return the goods, you can always get their timely treatment.

Yelp
Always an issue with checkout. The palm scanners never work. And if you expect to have an employee around, good luck. You press the attendant button and when someone finally comes out, they act as if you needing their help is the biggest inconvenience in the world. This scenario has happened to me multiple times.

Yelp
WOW, I was just telling people why Amazon put a Go store on Park when Lexington or 3rd is the place to be ? And BANG, that's where they put the new store and they did it real quick too, almost as fast as 2 day Prime. The Go store is way bigger than Park and more noticeable to on the corner of 53rd and Lexington Ave. Prices are about average I seen items here for less and also for more at others places. You just got to how and where to shop. I really excited that I don't need go to Duane Reed for a juice or a bag of chips and stand on line at checkout and again tell them 'No I don't got your card'. I tried out the Starbucks Espresso machine and it makes a decent cup but not has good as a barista would do. I got it for $1.85 same as coffee, but it will jump to back $2.85 once the store promotion is over. I tried the Dominique Ansel Kouign Amann sold at the Go store it is delicious but at $5.50 each ? Anyway Yay Yippee Do

Yelp
Right by Lexington Avenue's subway on 150 E 53rd Street this is one of three Amazon Go locations in New York City and wow - the concept is unbelievable - it is smart, innovative and classy and one I loved - you scan in through gates with your Amazon account and then everything you take out with you, you take home - a staff member explained that everything you pick up does get charged but due to the amazing technology including sensors and cameras, if you do put something back it shouldn't be charged either - meaning you can feel free to pick items up take a look (especially if you have allergies like me or you're calorie conscious) The store might not have been a great size and you obviously couldn't have done a full shop here but they still did have a small selection of meats as well as nice selection of cold beverages, sandwiches and to-go food (sadly not much gluten-free other than the potato chips) and even hot freshly brewed Starbucks coffee. The coca-cola freestyle machine was also a highlight, normally one single drink from this can cost £3-4 in the UK but here you can get any sized drink for just 99 cents which works out £0.81 in the UK so is a smashing bargain - especially considering its-self it contains over 100 different drink and flavour combinations from the Coca Cola brand - do be careful if you're visiting from overseas though as the US drinks do seem to contain a hell of a lot more sugar than we're used to here - the diet coke (sugarless in the UK) here seems to taste more like real coke in the UK, but obviously that isn't the stores fault as it's everywhere in the US. I would have liked to see a better gluten-free selection as they had nothing made specially gluten-free, so it was basically naturally gluten-free products or by chance which you could have, I do also feel the store could have been staffed better. TIP: Do watch out when you come in that no one enters behind you on your scan because it means they can pick up items on your tab! Still, this cool idea of a store, Amazon Go is really cool, unique, innovative and exciting - I really do hope it expands to the thousands of locations they have said and they include the UK too - they do really need to up their game for gluten-free now and perhaps making it more of a supermarket than a convenience store selling some products, while also housing Amazon Lockers (a useful bonus for sure) 4*

Yelp
I think it's a cool hybrid experience of going into a convenient store (akin to 7-11 meets Wholefoods) entering with your Amazon go account via QR code going in and grabbing whatever you want to purchase and leaving. No checkout needed. I think this is so cool and feels a little weird to put items in your pocket and just walk out. The staff 1-2 people were friendly and helpful and helped me return Amazon items directly in the store. I really liked this since it would credit my account upon scanning. If it's safe I would love to see a 24/7 version of these stores. Oh and heads up if you bring a long a friend and they pick something up you'll be charged for that too, goes for the kids if ya have them.

Yelp
I love Amazon Go! I'll admit when it first opened I was a bit hesitant. A cashier-less shopping experience? Everything on your body being scanned by thousands of cameras? Walk out like I just shoplifted? The whole idea was a bit off putting but I was quickly sold. This location is right by the E, M, & 6 lines and by my office. It's on the smaller side but is great for a quick lunch that you can literally grab and go. Scan your app at the turnstile, head on in, buy whatever you want, and leave. You'll get a receipt within minutes. There are associates around should you need help but everyone is pleasant and you honestly don't even need them. The sandwiches are good, the prepared hot foods that you need to zap in a microwave (they have microwaves on site, too) are delicious, and they also suck you in by offering Magnolia cupcakes right before you walk out. They also sell refrigerated items such as milk for the office or ice cream for the freezer. There is a self-serve Starbucks machine as well as the cool Coke fountain machine with all the nifty flavor options. They also have a tiny area devoted to toiletries in the event you forgot to put on deodorant that morning. Great concept for those of us who are introverts. The salads are also huge too if you're looking for something on the healthy side. I just wish this location itself was larger considering Europa cafe used to be located here and they had a whole other half that is now blocked off.

Yelp
I was having trouble returning an Amazon order yesterday. As I walking out because I was frustrated since I couldn't get in the locker; A very nice young lady an employee by name Ericka approached me and assisted me with my return. This is a nice clean location and the customer service is excellent!! Thanks Erica!!

Yelp
Super disappointed with Amazon Go. Went here last month as I thought it would have a little bit of everything or like a version of Target. Not at all as its more like a more primped up version of an express Deli but without having to checkout with an employee. Even with that, I was also confused as how to enter the store, because you need to enter through your Amazon app and have to go to a certain section and than do a scan. It's weird and somewhat inconvenient, not to mention doesn't have a super variety of selection when it comes to foods and snacks on the go. Love Amazon overall but I'll pass.

Yelp
I can't believe I almost forgot to review this restaurant!! Simply put: the food was good, the drinks were STRONG (rum punch) and the music was great! I went with my friend to the silent dinner party, it was a DJ battle.. we had an amazing time! Can not wait to go back!

Yelp
This is such a cool store. You just pick up items from the shelf and walk out. I wish they had a wider selection, but for a small store you can get quite a lot: sausages, frozen meals, pasta, frozen vegetables, coffee, sushi, basic toiletries, and on and on.
