Travel California: A Complete Guide to Sacramento

"A charming bed and breakfast in Sacramento’s Midtown neighborhood, Amber has 10 rooms all named after classical museums and writers (Dickinson, Beethoven, etc.). Each room is different—the Dickinson has a fireplace and a wall of windows, the Chaucer has a four-poster bed and an antique bathroom sink—but all include breakfast (think yogurt, fruit and housemade granola, oatmeal, crêpes and eggs)." - Sophie Friedman

My wife and I stayed here over the weekend to celebrate her birthday. We booked the Mozart room because it had a Jacuzzi tub, fire place and private patio. The host was very nice when we checked in and asked us what time we would like breakfast brought to our room etc. He also brought us silverware and dishes for take out we ordered to our room. Overall customer service was good. However, for a hotel room at almost $300 per night my cleanliness expectations, especially during COVID, were much higher. The room was very dusty and had cobwebs on the light fixtures. There were still random rose petals and tooth past caps etc. left on the floor from the last person's stay. The toilet had brown marks in it and there was hardly any hand soap left in the bathroom. Breakfast was very pretty but my wife and I could not eat the waffles. They tasted like fried funnel cake but were so chewy I had a hard time cutting them with a knife. I honestly wouldn't have left a review at all but the final straw for me was the pot smoke. The manger/ hosts unit backs right up to the room we stayed in. The host would stand on their patio backing up to our room and smoke morning and night. We could hear him hacking and we couldn't use the patio at all because it reeked like pot and would fill our room. The last morning we were there the whole lobby smelled like pot. I don't care if people smoke but it was very unprofessional to do so in an area that effects your guests. Not everyone wants to stay in a $300 hotel room that smells like weed! Anyway the rooms were very pretty, the bed was comfortable and overall the place was very quite.

Such a great experience. We went for our 9-year anniversary and had an amazing time. Everything from check-in to check out was absolutely flawless. Every little nook and cranny is so adorable. The attention to detail in the decorations was amazing. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a relaxing time. The breakfast and bed was delicious, the jacuzzi tub and the room was so relaxing, and the space was impeccably clean!

Google
This bed and breakfast was great! It was in a great area with lots of restaurants within walking distance. The staff were wonderful. They brought us cookies at night, set out drinks in the morning and brought breakfast to the room. The drinks were set out on a tray just outside our door at 6am so we could have them when we wanted. You can choose from coffee, tea, juice, hot chocolate etc. They were so quiet I didn't even know they were there. The breakfast was wonderful. Orange salad with honey and almonds, apple smoked sausage and Belgium waffles with walnuts and syrup. They brought it to the room, set it up with china, silverware, flowers and cloth napkins. The beds were comfortable and the bathroom was really nice. Marble floors with a large jetted two person tub. This was an excellent place to relax without the kids!

What a great place! My wife and I were looking for a quiet getaway but nothing to far and Amber house was perfect. The room was clean and welcoming. We enjoyed the decor and the jetted tub. It's in a great location, we were able to walk up the L Street for dinner and dessert. We came back and soaked in the tub, it was so relaxing. The bed was comfy. And the breakfast was delicious, fluffy belgian waffles, crisp bacon and oranges with a tasty drizzle and almonds. The coffee was good too. After the food coma wore of we got up and packed. While tidying up we noticed a brown journal, it had notes from all the previous visitors. It was so cool, we read a few and then left our note. It would've been cool to read the night before. We'll definitely be back.

Google
Love this place. So many great things to make and my favorite is that they bring you coffee to your room in the morning for while you get ready. And of course they give you more at breakfast which they make when you walk into the dining area. It is also delicious and more intricate than I expected. They also consider so many details. My room was on the first floor and the bottom windows were frosted for privacy. There is a space heater in the rooms because they are large.

This past weekend, my husband and I celebrated our 1st wedding anniversary at the Amber House Inn of Midtown. Neither of us had ever stayed in a bed and breakfast prior to this and it was a truly memorable experience. The staff was very kind and friendly, and the breakfast was amazing! The house itself is very unique and I think a detailed history of the house and the neighborhood in the room would be fascinating.
Staying at the Amber House Inn reminded me of visiting family as a child. They were there to help us with anything we needed and made us feel at home. If they started serving brunch and mimosas I might never leave the house at all. :)
My husband and I have already discussed making this a yearly tradition for us. Thank you so much for the hospitality Amber House!

Google
Beautiful place. Check in was a breeze. Beautiful, regal homes. Stayed in the Mozart Room with the fireplace and patio. A truly wonderful place. Bed was ok, little wobbly. The only reason for 4 stars is for some slight improvements upon what is already a spectacular place. Such as stained windows like the room across from it would be a very nice touch. An updated television that offered streaming services. Screens on the bathroom windows so you can enjoy the hot tub without the worry of bugs. Perhaps blankets on the patio to cuddle and converse. And also, parking. Perhaps parking placards of some sort for your guests. With such a premium price presented the LAST worry should be a ticket or worst off a tow. Other than that, a great place and great space. Maybe I will try a different room next time.

Google
Old Victorian charm. The spa tube was awesome. The breakfast was delicious. Only draw back you can hear everything, every foot step and our bed was super sqeaky. Other then that we had a great experience. Great downtown location just blocks from an outdoor promenade and gracious hosts.

Yelp
We stayed in the Chauncey Suite. It was AMAZING!!!! The room is everything we expected and more. The little intricate details added the perfect touch. The room was clean and comfortable. The pillows and bed were like sleeping on clouds. The staff was helpful and friendly. The jacuzzi tub was perfect for us after a long day, definitely big enough for 2. We had fresh cookies waiting for us in the room when we arrived. We would hands down recommend!!! It was relaxing and romantic. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
Amber House was burned in a fire in June of 2021. To date, no restoration has occurred.

Yelp
The cafe de olla is perfect. The service is great and the mariachi are great! The food is good, but the beans need to be more thick. The beans are like a sauce? Beans should have substance. The atmosphere is likely. Good place

Yelp
I stayed at Amber House for a week in the fall of 2019. It's one of the only B&B options in Midtown and has a bit of charm. The breakfasts were always good. They made what would be just basic fruit and eggs taste glorious. We had a few nice conversations with Holly, who had owned the B&B for about 3 years at the time. She told us a little bit about the history of the block and the B&B itself. It's a nice touch to have coffee delivered to the room each morning. Our room, the Dickenson, was a bit dusty when we first arrived. When we complained, it was quickly and mostly remedied. The weirdest part of the room, though, was that the bathroom had no real door - just a curtain. I just don't see why the door was excluded. That being said, the bathroom had a large jacuzzi, which I wish I had used more. It was a treat!

Yelp
Loved staying there...no longer open not sure what happened great owners. Comfortable rooms. Nice breakfasts too bad they shuttered

Yelp
Went for a Valentine's Day get away and stayed in room 13 the Beethoven room. We went out to dinner came back and my girlfriend seen a cockroach crawling on the bed. So we lifted the sheets and then one fell to the ground. I called the on site manager (owner) and showed him the roach dead on the ground. He apologized and he said all he could do was issue me a refund. I had to find a hotel room at 11pm which on top of the roach ruined everything. My refund never came through after months of calling the amber house which stated that the refund was processed. 2 months later my bank is still dealing with disputing the charges and getting me my refund. I would not recommend staying here.

Yelp
Hello Mr Owner, *I thank you for changing your response to what you posted earlier. I am not a critical reviewer. When we arrived at 11am we were not warmly welcomed. What we were served the next day, I found a little funky. As for price? Both the King Room & Queen room are the same price. So my choice wasn't based on price, the website has fine print which states Spa Tub. Nothing that I can see regarding house choice. I wish you well in your future endeavors. If there is one thing I hate, it's an argumentative business owner. When you say my reviews are extremely critical? Yeah, you're stirring the pot. This is so not the case. If you think travelers want canned pineapple rings and cookies out of a package, compared to the farm fresh eggs I had at a B&B last year, maybe that's a Sacramento B&B thing? It's not critical at all, just pointing out the fact that it's nowhere near flying an excellence flag. And it was never explained to us that we'd be staying in another house. Good day to you sir!

Yelp
Have you ever left your honey moon suite because you and your husband were treated unfairly? If I can, I will rate Amber House ZERO! We paid $285.42 for a deluxe room with queen bed and in room massage tub. On the night of our wedding, as soon as we walked into the room then the bathroom. We were totally disappointed because the tub that we expected was not there. It was a totally a 1-star room full with the weird smell. We called Holly and asked why we received this room instead of Deluxe room and she said that that's all they have. We booked 2 months ago and didn't expect to stay in the room like this on our wedding night. She said we could leave and get the refund later. She blamed Expedia for giving us the wrong information about the room. FYI, We have used Expedia for many times and no bad experience with it. They overcharged us. They treated us unfairly. Who would do that to your customers? And just tell them to leave if they want to. And blame the third party and system problem. If you still want to book this place, don't use Expedia. They will screw your expectation.

Yelp
Great B&B. Check in generally at 3 PM and checkout 11 am. There are two victoeian homes that are part of this place. The larger one has a porch with 2 tables and a swinging chair. This place is great to take your breakfast, or PM sip of vino. The entrance leads to a living room with comfy couches, rocking chairs, a fireplace and an entrance into the dining room. The dark earthy wood and accents of stained glass make this place so charming in a Sactown kind of way. The rooms are each themed differently. Each morning they leave coffee outside the room at 6:30. Then they offer 3 types of breakfast options, each that is tasty and beautiful in presentation. The location is central in midtown so you can walk the city. Plus it's a flat city so am strolls are great, especially in the summer, before the day gets hot. Staff was kind and accommodating. I highly recommend staying here when you visit the California capital.

Yelp
You need to stay here at least once in your life. With your partner, with a friend or even by yourself. They have booze & every room has a private patio. The breakfast was the beautiful.

Yelp
Five stars is not enough. This Victorian home in a quiet section of the mansion district is a great destination in Midtown. Walking distance to an eclectic array of dining venues; however, the provided breakfast is top notch. The courteous staff does everything within their powers to pamper you. The rooms are named after composers. The Vivaldi Room (complete with 25 greatest hits cd) with its rooftop patio and bathroom jacuzzi tub are great features. Highly recommended as a destination in own right, or as a place to stay if you are in the state's capital.
google avatar

Stacey B.

Yelp
We enjoyed our stay in the Vivaldi room. The location is unbeatable and the hospitality was lovely from the Inn. The roof deck was great, there was plenty of hot water to fill the tub. I would definitely stay again and refer friends.
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
My wife and I spent a lovely night in the Vivaldi room and our stay was excellent. The balcony attached was quiet and shady, the jacuzzi tub perfect, and the bed comfortable. In these COVID circumstances we miss the bustle and charm of meeting people in a B&B, and we also regret we couldn't spend additional nights. But our stay was great and as things return to normal, we expect to return as well.

Yelp
My fiancé booked this place last night. He chose this place because he saw it was rated 4.5 stars. Since the pandemic started this is our 2nd time staying anywhere outside of our home with our 9month old baby. He had booked the king size room. (We got room #10, upstairs, far right corner). My first impression of this place, looked a bit sketchy. Reminded me of those old horror movies that either the place was haunted or some serial crazy killer was going to get us. It didn't look welcoming to me. When we got into our room, I felt like it's been vacant for awhile and has not been throughly cleaned with fresh linens/towels. Last night it was so hard for me to fall asleep because it was so damn hot from the heater. I tried to see if I can lower the temp but there was no option in our room. So I ended up sweating all night. I wanted to take off my pajama pants and fall asleep that way but I did not trust sleeping on the bed with no pants on. I didn't trust walking around barefoot in the room either. The carpet looked unsanitary. When we woke up this morning at 6am, I had turned on the lights to get ready for the day. My fiancé had to be at an important event. So as my baby and I are sitting on the bed, I see a small bug crawling on the bed. I got up so fast! I took pics and a video of it. I showed it to my fiancé when he got out the shower and he said it was a BED BUG! He moved the sheets to see if he saw any more and sure enough he did! He called the front desk and explained what we found. They offered if we wanted a different room but by that time we were already disgusted knowing we just slept on a bed with bed bugs with our baby. We did not want to stay there. Instead we asked for a refund. My fiancé and I came home with bug bites all over our body all because of the unsanitary rooms they offered us. I'm extremely disgusted! I would never stay here again! If only I can add the video I have since these pictures don't do much justice.

Yelp
Cutest B&B ever, came here for my 5 year anniversary and did not want to leave! If you are looking for a local vacation, this is definitely the place to go. The beds are definitely a cloud out of heaven with many many fluffy pillows!

Yelp
Cozy and hip B&B in Central location. This place is amazing - love the decor and theme of the place. The rooms are super clean and comfortable. The jacuzzi tub at the end of the night was incredible. Loved waking up to hot tea at our door. Everything was within walking distance and in a safe area.

Yelp
I was greeted when checking in with smiles and sweet courtesy. Good start! It's always a great thing when you enter a room and instantly smile, then say wow! Beautifully vintage with lovely antique furniture. The fireplace is a wonderful touch that helped this insomniac fall asleep so fast! I literally slept more hours the last two nights than I have in a week. My counting sheep were wondering where I went! The breakfast that is brought to you is scrumptious. Great experience with all staff. I am supposed to check out today but going to try to sneak another day in. :) I am very thankful for this experience!

Yelp
My husband surprised me with an overnight stay at this B&B. What a lovely place! The attention to detail is amazing. We stayed in the Bach Room which is beautifully decorated. The bed is super comfortable. The innkeeper was super nice and friendly. It was like being in a historical, romantic movie. I can't wait to come back!! Oh! Breakfast was delicious!!

Yelp
This place is my go to for Sacramento. All the employees are always courteous. PJ is awesome. Great BnB.

Yelp
I was here for just a weekday night. I started off by ringing the wrong doorbell (there's a yellow house that is different from the main house), so they came from the main house anyways to fetch me and didn't make me feel too bad! Check-in was easy and the room itself was right by the entrance to the house. Despite this, it wasn't too loud, but you could definitely hear if people were talking when they walked in. The room and amenities were incredible, cozy and comfortable. They give you fresh baked cookies when you get settled in, and breakfast in the morning. I had a croissant, egg, ham and cheese sandwich with watermelon and OJ. Super delicious. I wasn't used to them setting up the breakfast and table for me (used to doing things myself!), but that was appreciated. Overall, it was a great experience and I'd definitely stay there again.

Yelp
The Amber House Inn is an absolute gem. Located in midtown, the Inn is quaint, charming and clean. The architecture and furniture are in line with 1920's (ish) style and can make you feel like your getaway is to another time. The breakfasts are wonderful and they leave fresh brewed coffee outside of your door at 6am ever morning on a darling tray. Must stay here again!

Yelp
Beautiful little spot in midtown! Walking distance from a lot of great eateries (I.e. Kru, Red Rabbit). It is a quiet place where you can get a lot of privacy. I stayed in the Chaucer room which was very clean and classically decorated. The bathtub is big enough for two people. Upon check in you get to select your choice of breakfast and where you would like to dine. I chose to stay in my room and it was glorious!! THE MOST comfortable bed and bathrobes EVER!!! It is in midtown so expect to hear some of the commotion from the street. But overall VERY lovely. Kind of pricey but you do get what you pay for. I will be back!!

Yelp
I normally start my review with all the positives. Unfortunately, I don't have that privilege today. My wife and I booked to stay there. Unfortunately due to an unforeseen medical condition (for which we had a doctors note for), they were unsympathetic and denied us a refund. Expedia called on our behalf many times over the course of many days only to be told that there was no manager on site. Keep in mind that even Delta Airlines worked with us. They lost a few customers because they wanted to save $192. It may not be a lot to others, but that was a lot for us. We love bed and breakfasts and would have come back many more times as we like to frequent Sacramento. If you book here, remember that they have a five day cancellation policy. They will be unsympathetic if you try to reason with them. Rules are rules I suppose. I will not get to see why others scored it 5 stars as I'm sure it's a lovely place.

Yelp
Yep. I live not even eight blocks away. That's how amazing this place is. Two houses, Musicians and Writers - across the street from each other...plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from. I, personally, am in love with the Vivaldi room. (#12) Judith, Carol and Patrick- Thank you for making me feel I was far away from Sacramento. The breakfasts? Amazing. Soy Vanilla French Toast and seasonal fruit with poppy seed dressing one morning, and Eggs Benedict with a first course of spiced pear- while listening to doves, meadowlarks, pigeons, crows and blue jays... indescribable. We dined on the patio several times, even in the rain, under the umbrella- and had the best time ever. The last night I had ordered two glasses of wonderful port and a candlelit bath as a surprise for my (still) awesome husband. ...We had lunch at Capitol Dawg, earlier, and Teriyaki on the deck under the umbrella while watching the rain for dinner. We are trying to continue a yearly tradition, and have succeeded so far. We treated my amazing Ma in law to the Brahms room, and I don't think she's ever been so relaxed. Non alcoholic beverages of your choice until nine, a whirlpool bath, plush terrycloth robes, cable, ipod deck, morning paper and service- fresh baked cookies and icy cold milk and tea (or what you please) at turn down... Luxurious. There really is no other word. Ive never felt so pampered. If there's a special person in your life you want to impress, or if you need that gift for the one who has everything- this is it. Home away from home, indeed.

Yelp
My Husband and I got married here in 2012 and it was just great! The Amber House was the only place we could find for a small wedding (less than 30 people) and it was just beautiful! We had the option of having the wedding inside in the front room of the main house, or outside in the backyard of the second house across the street. We chose inside of the main house because it was cheaper and I am the cheapest person I know. They had cute white folding chairs they set out, and a dock so we could plug in our iPod to play music. We had a "cocktail hour" with wine and soda after the wedding when we took pictures and they allowed us to take picture across the street in the backyard of the second house too. Judith was really great and super nice, we loved her! She listened to what we said and wanted and had answers to everything! Really sweet lady! I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice venue for a small wedding that doesn't cost a fortune! I would like to come back sometime too and stay in the hotel one day. :)
google avatar

Mish L.

Yelp
I called this morning to ask about booking a private room for a small birthday party, but was informed that their rooms were too small to host what I needed. I spoke to Judith and even though she could not accommodate me, she was still very helpful. She gave me suggestions of other hotels that might suit my needs (unprompted) and was most courteous. If this is the type of service they give to people who would not be guests, then I could just imagine what better service they would provide to their actual guests.

Yelp
Check out the "last minute deals" I never thought I would find myself "vacationing" in Sacramento. Mostly because I have spent 90%+ of my life within an hour or so of there. But for Christmas we got a $100 gift certificate to this place. And then 3 months ago we moved out of state. We came back this last weekend and decided to stop by. (ps. if you call the day of or the day before, if they have any rooms (except Mozart) you can get them for $159. We got the Vivaldi room, which from what I saw really was the best. It has it's own roof top deck you can spend your breakfast at. The only complaints I had, the neighborhood can be a little noisy, but it wasn't to bad. And the AC decided to stay off the whole night so I got way to hot. Other than that the beds are comfy, the rooms are great. They have a two person whirlpool tub, that really actually comfortably fits two people (imagine that!). The staff is beyond nice. Judith (one of the owners) is quite a joy to talk to, very sweet lady! The breakfast was just right. First course was melon balls with greek yogurt, and toasted almonds. The second course was some delicious french toast with thin sliced apple, 2 pieces of bacon, and some kiwi, and a light touch of syrup. Oh man, that was tasty and just the right amount of food. I personally have never done a B&B but I would for sure go back to this place. It was a nice was to relax on an otherwise busy trip. Oh! And there's cookies when you get there :)
google avatar

Amy D.

Yelp
You can't blame the staff for noise outside these charming b&b houses, but you can keep that possibility in mind when you decide to stay in downtown Sac. That's also what makes this place so great as you can walk to a variety of the best restaurants around. The innkeepers are absolutely delightful & very accommodating. The rooms are spotless & felt cleaner than home. The beds are super comfy & the breakfasts yummy. If you are a first-timer here, ask where your room is located. For example, The Beethoven room is directly inside the front door & facing the street. The old homes are elegant & original, so there are gaps under the gorgeous solid wood doors & you can see through the keyholes just like a peephole. There are quieter rooms upstairs or tucked away from the entrance in the main home, but if you are used to white noise (or better yet, ocean!), packing a sound machine would be a good idea. The customer service just doesn't get any better. They'll bring you beverages (free of charge except for alcohol) any time up until 10pm & warm cookies are available when you check in & every evening of your stay if you choose. What I like best is this isn't a b&b where you have to be social with the other guests. Your breakfast can be delivered to your room at your preferred time & set up for you with flowers & all. This is great because most likely you'll be wearing one of the Amber House robes & feeling too cozy to leave your room until it's checkout time.

Yelp
They deserve 5 stars without a second thought. Hands down the best place we have ever stayed. It's pricey but well worth it for the experience. It was quaint and beautiful. We stayed in the Vivaldi room with our own private balcony! The couples tub was HUGE not just one of those tiny "two person" tubs. The staff was amazing. Any person we came into contact with was more than helpful and willing to accommodate any request. The breakfast both days was AMAZING!!! No other way to describe it. Sunday we had flambéed grapefruit and French toast with sautéed apples. Monday a fruit salad with poppyseed dressing (we did not get the dressing as my fiancé is deathly allergic to poppy seeds) and spinach, mushroom, and cheese egg white omelet with breakfast potatoes. I do not like omelets... I should say I USE to not like them. Fabulous! The room was clean, we got the romance package which they set up in secret without my fiancé knowing while we were to have some cheese and wine. We were also attending the Garth Brooks concert which was part of my finances surprise weekend gift. The limo service driver gave it away right away even though I requested several times to the staff to keep it s secret until we were at the venue. Not The Amber Houses fault at all, they did their part. ;) My only complaint is that it was hot outside 85 degrees, which sucked because there is everything you could want or need within a short walking distance. No need to drive anywhere. Within a short 10 blocks there is food (both cheap and high scale), drinks, bars, BBQ, sushi, shopping, parks, you name it! This was for our three year anniversary and we plan to make it a tradition. Love The Amber House, love the experience, food, robes. Everything was exactly how it's described on their website only better! Thank you for making our trip the best couple trip we have taken thus far.

Yelp
Thoroughly enjoyed a relaxing stay at the Amber House... the innkeepers were welcoming and helpful. In the morning, we opted to have breakfast in our room, it was fantastic! The Eggs Benedict were delicious! They have a great set up and provide excellent customer service. Everything is up to you: what time for turn down service, when would you like your breakfast, etc... after spending so much time at large chain hotels, it was a nice change to have choices with more of a personal touch.

Yelp
Terrible. I had booked this room with the acknowledgement that they had a rollaway. Instead I arrive with my Sister and either have to share the bed with her or sleep on the floor. Of course I slept on the floor. The host was uncaring. They were nice to leave an empty water bottle in my room and half used shampoo. What a nightmare. Expect to hear early risers or late nighters as the walls are paper thin. They ignored my request for a refund. Thank god Hotels.com was awesome and provided me with a credit towards another stay. Good Luck if you stay here as maybe it was just my one experience as they are rated fairly well.

Yelp
If I could give Amber House six or seven stars, I'd do it in a heartbeat. This place is superb. My partner and I were celebrating our 2 year anniversary and we're lucky enough to stumble upon a "last minute deal" for Amber House. We stayed in the Chaucer room, which suited us perfectly! We were greeted and offered beverages upon arrival. Check in was simple and enjoyable in the comfortable lounge. We were then asked several questions about our preferred time for breakfast and any special dietary needs. Then they set us off on our way and encouraged us to enjoy ourselves on our anniversary. The attention to detail really shined when coffee was delivered. They had written our names with hearts on a plaque which was delivered with our coffee. Also, when we showed up for breakfast, which was delicious by the way, they has sliced strawberries into rose petals and wished us happy anniversary! Overall, this was a great experience and we will definitely be back. Thanks so much to Carol and Elena for taking great care of us and making us feel welcome and supported.

Yelp
We had our wedding night here in 2001. Thought it was closed down and were so happy to see them in business still! The walls are not paper thin by any means, despite some petty reviews. We had the loveliest evening in midtown and a wonderful breakfast the next day. I cannot fathom people who have complaints about this place! It's an oasis in the city! Definitely worth every penny. We'll be back asap! Thank you Amber House again for a beautiful stay. We can't wait to return.

Yelp
Wonderful little gem. Stayed here one night while we were in Sacramento. We booked the Mozart room, it was great - vintage / retro Victorian looks but in a cool way. Suite had a jacuzzi tub and private covered back porch area for lounging. Location couldn't be better, we could walk under 15 minutes to great food and cocktails. Breakfast in the morning was really good, choice between egg scramble or yogurt and granola. Both were homemade with care. Will be recommending this little place to others and staying here in the future for sure.

Yelp
Wonderful staycation in midtown! Decided to book the Longfellow Room at Amber House and loved the place. Our room was very nice and comfortable, and breakfast on the porch was a delight. Just fyi- the bathroom in Longfellow can get very warm due to the skylight.

Yelp
This is a long time in coming ... wasn't really trying to keep it a secret (maybe a little bit so I could always have my pick :) ... seriously though ... this place is for real in over-the-top posh. You will definitely get your pamper on ... i mean how could you not!! The room we were in (The Vivaldi)? ... had a private patio in which we were served the most delicious morning brunch (see the pics) ... the bed had both comfy pillow top mattress AND high end down comforters ... the room held true to a 1920's style decor with wonderful high back chair, poster bed, retro phone, and free standing retro stove/fireplace ... the 1920's style even extended to the bathroom (w/ a touch of modern including a Jacuzzi bath and phone at over the tub). The pottery barn style decor offered lovely soaps, elegant skin moisturizers. The exit toward the patio (through the bathroom), came via beautiful a beautiful french door. Coffee and pastry were an additional option -- delivered to the door -- and a beautifully appointed great room / dining room was only a stone's throw away in the main house across the street -- where you could also find complimentary brandy, a wonderful collection of books in the quaint library, and plentiful games. Never mind the creature comforts offered from within the BnB ... the location is only a few minutes from downtown Sac ... a $5 Uber ride will take you to an amazing selection of restaurants, and a $6 Uber ride will get you to/or from the Amtrak ... and if you are inclined to venture in the gay part of town (as we were) ... then you will probably be quite happy with the short trek from the BnB. This place has everything for the most romantic stay-cay that you'd ever imagine. I would highly recommend the wonderfully, satisfying elegance and hospitality of The Amber House BnB ... and in Sac ... who knew?!

Yelp
This was my fourth time staying at The Amber House Inn of Midtown and it will definitely be my last. We stayed in the Mozart Room and I was very disappointed with how our bed mattress caved in the center of the bed. From the window blinds to the "tub for two," everything was totally aged and needs replacing before charging guests almost $400.00 per night. Next, I paid to have candles around the bathtub. When we arrived I expected candles and there were none. The canopy on the bed was aged and the bathtub is stained which tells me that it needs to be replaced. Finally... my husband and I requested to have our breakfast delivered to our room at 9:00am. I opened the door at 9.10am and there was coffee but no breakfast. I then called to inquire about our breakfast and was told that my husband and I requested breakfast in The Amber House dining room which was incorrect. At approximately 10:05 our breakfast was delivered; and both were cold. This was my husband's first time staying at The Amber House and per his own words, "I appreciate the effort my wife made however, I was expecting more for the $400.00 we were charged. Thank you Amber House but this was definitely a disappointment and our last stay at your B&B.

Yelp
The room we stayed in (Longfellow) was very comfortable amd adorable. The bathroom was absolutely lovely! We took a night soak and a morning soak in the jacuzzi. There is a window AND a skylight to enjoy, plus a shower. The rest of the house is decorated nicely, including a library! Honestly, breakfast wasn't good. They could probably use a chef with more experience! Lovely and romantic spot, but venture out for breakfast

Yelp
My fiance and I stayed here again to celebrate his time home from the military. Everything was just as perfect as we remembered. It was just about the only time we had together while he was home since we were with his family the rest of the time and it was just what we needed. The chocolate chip cookies were as good as I remembered, staff just as friendly, and breakfast just as delicious! This time we stayed in the Vivaldi room and absolutely loved the patio. I think I prefer the actual Dickinson room a little more but I loved the fact we were able to eat breakfast outside. Hopefully we are able to come back in the near future and try a different room the next time!

Yelp
I have to admit, since this has been under new ownership, this service has gone down a bit. The last few times we've gone, the inn keepers have seemed new so I'm not sure if there is a large turnover rate or not. They never remember us so they may not keep records. The past owners remembered repeat customers and we once got an upgrade to a larger room because of that. Not that I expect it but it was nice to be remembered, especially since that upgrade was on my birthday. They also no longer serve warm chocolate chip cookies and beverages at night. Now they are packaged (still possibly homemade though) oatmeal raisin cookies on your bed when you get there. We had gone to a play for the evening and wanted to take a bath when we got back. Had trouble with the tub and you can't reach an inn keeper after 9:00. God forbid there should be an emergency. They do have a mini fridge with water & sodas and a portable ice maker in the library which is nice. I wish they had a vegetarian option for breakfast other than removing the meat from the current choice. I've already started looking around for other B&B's in the area.

Yelp
My husband and I stayed in the Dickinson room and were completely impressed. The room was spacious, clean, and bright. We enjoyed the jacuzzi tub and warm fireplace. The room was quiet, which is great since there was a couple in the room next to us. The bed was perfectly soft and comfortable. We requested wine glasses and a bottle opener, and both were brought to our room with warm, fresh baked chocolate chip cookies. Fresh coffee and earl gray tea was waiting for us when we woke up. We asked for apple juice at the last minute and it was no issue for it to be brought up with our delicious breakfast. If you are looking for a cozy, comfortable place to stay in Sacramento, this is the place for you. We have zero complaints.

Yelp
I had my wedding here recently and I would definitely not recommend this as a place to have any event. We originally liked this place because it has an intimate garden that we felt would be perfect to host our wedding. We were given a price sheet and told what the deposit would be to hold our date. I called back to make the deposit and after my payment was processed I was informed of an added gratuity (non optional) that had never been mentioned before. The event contract was scant on details, but up to that point the event coordinator had been helpful so I wasn't too worried. As our wedding date approached, we had to continually call with questions. The only time that we were contacted without calling first was when they made a mathematical error on our invoice and needed more money. We couldn't get access to the garden to decorate on the day of our wedding until after their breakfast was complete (another fact that was not disclosed until after the contract was signed). I also couldn't get access to the bridal room until breakfast was complete. I understand that they want to make their guests comfortable, but I was paying more to be there a few hours than the guests were paying to stay overnight. We felt that our mere presence was an inconvenience. On the day of our wedding, the event coordinator was late. I felt that she should have been there and been ready for us. She said she ran into traffic. I understand that happens, but no one else on the staff seemed to be know what was going on or where to get the things (like tables, tablecloths, plates, etc.) that we had been promised. It was almost impossible to find any member of the staff and we had to go looking for them several times. I will say that they were friendly and helpful once we found them. One lady even provided water to the people who were decorating which was greatly appreciated. The staff overall were friendly. On to the "bridal room". This is a tiny room right off the main entrance. This room is apparently the library. There is a window right in front that you have to cover to change. This makes the room quite dark and on my wedding day it was also very hot in there. There was no place to hang my dress and the only place to put anything was on the bench seat in the window. Additionally, this room has no mirror so you can check your look. If you want to do that, you have to go to the second floor. I also had someone actually open the door on me while I was changing into my dress! My husband and the best man had to change into their suits in a small bathroom located off the garden. I would think that with two houses comprising the inn, they would have some space that could be used for this for a few minutes. Our wedding was actually beautiful thanks to the hard and fast work of some of our friends and family. We paid for cake cutting by Amber House, which was done by the event coordinator. I was told by several people that she was short with them, which I do not appreciate. I won't be hosting anything else here. It might be a nice place to stay, but after the experience with hosting our wedding, we will most likely never know.

Yelp
Came for a one night stay to celebrate a birthday. Stayed in the Lord Byron room. Beautiful room, comfy bed, tasteful and well kept decorations in bathroom and bedroom. Check in and arranging breakfast options was smooth. Husband has a walking boot on, and at check-in employee checking us in noticed immediately and was able to switch our room for a room on the bottom floor, which we appreciated. 6am coffee and 9am breakfast was delivered right when expected, both were delicious and hot! Much better experience than staying at hotels in the area- quieter and a relaxing environment, perfect for when you are staying with a significant other. Will definitely come back next time we are in town!

Yelp
I stayed overnight in the Beethoven Room on April 11, 2018. I was greeted professionally by the evening innkeeper although I did not get her name. I found the Beethoven room to be comfortable with modern amenities including Wi-Fi and I was very pleased there was also a Jacuzzi in the room as well. The queen-sized bed was clean and comfortable. The room was well-lit and nicely decorated. Since I had not stayed in a Bed and Breakfast type room that was 100 years old Victorian style in over twenty years, it did take me a few minutes to figure out how to work the lights and the fan. When I read the dining and guest guide, I was pleased to read there is a library from which one can check out movies and books. I thought that was a really nice touch and is something you don't normally hear about with lodging establishments. There is also a DVD player in the room right above the TV. I was pleased that there was street parking available very close to the Inn and it was also free. The dining guide in the room was very helpful for finding eating establishments within walking distance in the midtown area. The next morning, I enjoyed orange juice brought by Allie (sp?) who was very friendly and pleasant. When I checked out after breakfast, I met Tanya the morning innkeeper and chef. All I can say is best Belgian Waffles ever! Just amazing! Tanya's cooking will make your tummy melt and her smile will make your heart melt. If it hasn't happened already, someone should marry Tanya yesterday for her cooking and her smile. I would highly recommend the Amber House Inn especially for couples (Jacuzzi in the room), tourists (plenty of places to visit within walking distance), and those who appreciate and value history. It is not often one gets to stay in a one hundred-year-old Victorian style inn with a Jacuzzi and modern amenities. The only negative comment I have about the Beethoven room is there isn't really a place one can work from. There isn't a desk or office in the room. There are chairs and the bed which one can use a laptop and Wi-Fi from but I imagine how that might get a little tricky.
