Former Michelin-Starred Restaurant Lord Stanley Reopens in Russian Hill | Eater SF

Village Rotisserie in Noe Valley Has Closed | Eater SF

"One of Santana Row’s first tenants, Amber India is closing after 20 years because the owner says lunch business has been hit by remote work; the restaurant will relocate to Milpitas where the new space will serve as both a traditional dine-in restaurant and a kitchen for catering." - Paolo Bicchieri

After 20 Years in San Jose, Amber India Restaurant Has Closed Its Santana Row Location | Eater SF

"After two decades of serving butter chicken and green pepper lamb curry at Santana Row, the Amber India outpost owned by Vijay Bist has closed because the decline of in-person work at local offices hurt lunch sales and it didn't make sense to renew the lease; the mini-chain will relocate to Milpitas, taking over a space that offers on-site dining and kitchen production so it can better fulfill catering and to-go orders, and the new location at 556 South Milpitas Boulevard will open June 30 for both dine-in and take-out, while Amber India restaurants in San Francisco and Los Altos remain open." - Lauren Saria

"This Indian restaurant is a must-try! They offer a wide variety of authentic dishes that are absolutely delicious. The spacious and clean dining area adds to the overall experience, and the manager, Godfrey, is super friendly and helpful. I'm extremely satisfied and happy - highly recommended!"

My weekly Indian food fix spot! Amazing food and great service! Atmosphere is excellent for large parties, plenty of parking is definitely a plus~ come see for yourself 🥰

Google
A relatively new location for another Amber Indian restaurant. This one specializes in catering but also provides nice on-site dining. The food selection is really good with a lot of vegetarian choices. The service is very friendly. The chef even came out after our dinner to make sure everything was to our satisfaction. Warmly recommended!

Google
Went here with a friend. Three of the four dishes ordered were good, one was a little underwhelming. Atmosphere of the place surprised me, fairly nice inside, outside looks like any other industrial joint in Milpitas. A little pricey for what you get. Went for lunch, 3 people, 4 dishes a couple of drinks, a little over $100.

Google
While this restaurant is in an isolated area and doesn’t draw big crowds, the setting was perfect for a relaxing lunch with close friends. The food was amazing. The attention was unparalleled and parking was super easy. If you are connecting with friends or family and want to have a long leisurely lunch with no noise in the background and good ambience, then this is the place to come and be there for a while.

It was not at all a good experience visiting this new location for the first time. Its very different compared to the Santana Row branch. The restaurant has been given a facelift since I visited this place last time. The decor is decent and can accommodate more than 50 customers at a time. We ordered gobi manchurian and dhania murg as appetizers followed by bhindi masala and mutton Rogan Josh as part of main course. The dhania murg and garlic naan were the only good stuff out of all dishes we ordered. The chicken was juicy and well cooked. The gobi manchurian did not use the right kind of sauce, the gobis were not at all crispy. It was more like a gobi bell pepper sabzi cooked with tomato ketchup. The bhindi dish had a few "not so tender" pieces. It definitely did not do justice to a 20$ bhindi dish. The pudina paratha was too thick. I do not plan to go to this place again.

I ordered takeout at this restaurant, as I have done so a number of times before. The order was this : one Kadhai Paneer meal, 4 garlic naans, one butter chicken, and one goat biryani. When I went to pick up the order, there was no one at the reception (and no one in the restaurant anywhere). I shouted “hello, anyone there” 3-4 times and no one showed up. The order was sitting there, bagged, but anyone could have walked out with that, and no one would be wiser! Anyway, another customer shows up, proceeds to loudly say “hello, anyone here?” And then decides to go to the kitchen to call the staff out! Then out walks the proprietor and hands me my order. When I get home, I find : Naans are hard and chewy. Both curry dishes re okay, nothing great. The goat biryani has bits of charred, tough goat meat! The rest of the goat pieces in the biryani are tough as well. The biryani itself wasn’t as flavorful as last time. Poor food quality, poor service, but prices are premium. Will not be coming back. Ever.

Google
Went to pista house recently, we ordered a biryani and veg meal. Loved veg meal was wholesome, delicious and homely. Biryani no doubt was very good as this place is famous for it. Chef and staff were friendly, came over to ask if we were comfortable and food was good. There were only 4-5 people for dine in the time we went, lot of pickup orders. Would definitely visit again to try out new dishes.

Yelp
Thanksgiving black friday, when most restaurants are closed, we walk in to an empty place, but food was amazing!! Chicken biryani, my son finished in 10 mins! The chicken was cooked so well that the meat slipped off the bone. Its been so long since I ate chicken like that.

Yelp
Was craving Indian food so decided to try this place. I ordered takeout but am definitely planning to dine-in next time. The restaurant is super clean and spacious, with plenty of tables that can accommodate large parties. Service was super friendly and one of the reasons I will come back! The butter chicken was pretty good, the garlic naan was very garlicky but a little bit burnt, and the butter naan was great. Total price was $33 for an order of butter chicken, garlic naan and butter naan. Portions are kind of small for that price point, but overall my cravings are satisfied!

Yelp
Food was so yummy and staff were very friendly. Will come again! ¨ Ordered butter chicken, garlic naan and tandoori chicken

Yelp
Tried this place yesterday, food was mid no flavor whatsoever. Service was good. The butter chicken all I tasted was tomatoes that were a bit sour, no spice no other flavor. Garlic naan was good, raita and mango lassi was wayyy toooo thick. The paneer aur papad kebab i'd say 7/10, bit too cheesy but it's an item on the menu worth trying, something different. But don't think i'd come back.

Yelp
I called for to go during lunch hour (you cannot say "takeout" with them). Their phone service or maybe it's me was terrible. Conversation came in and out. Arriving within lunch hour (1245pm) to pick up the food, there were only two customers (same table) eating in. Additionally, strangely, this restaurant comprises an entire business warehouse, it is located within the south Milpitas business center. FOOD I appreciate the top notch takeout containers. Saag corn lunch tiffin - food did not mix - very light - curries are thick - rice is tasty Mutton curry - bitter aftertaste and undertones - two big pieces with cartilage whereas other were dry chunks of meat - very expensive nonetheless Garlic naan - lots of raw garlic chunks - very expensive running at $4 SERVICE - rude - dismissive - customers eating in literally had to scream CAN I GET THE BILL and CAN I GET A BOX... I have never been to India before and do not know if this is the standard but other Indian restaurants here are not this bad??? - DOES NOT UTILIZE APPLE PAY; literally screamed at me, CAN I GET THE CARD AMBIENCE - looks like an Indian party all day every day - I wouldn't eat here myself LOCATION - a business warehouse within the south Milpitas business center - lots of parking - interesting entrances Skip. Not worth it. Not tasty. Tastes old. Rude service.

Yelp
We had a wedding tasting here. The location is tricky, situated in a business park area in Milpitas. It was an hour drive from home. Entering the restaurant, it looked more like a hall and only 1 party was having dinner. We were met by the managers who were very polite and helpful. We listed some vegetarian dishes for some of our guests and they gave us 4 dishes each to try for appetizers, main course, side dishes and dessert. The dishes were very delicious, with just a few that needed minor adjustments, etc. The kitchen is 8k foot square and can cook for 1k people. They also serve party trays and corporate packed meal boxes. I read they serve a mean butter chicken but some of our guests are vegetarian. I would return here if it wasn't so far from home. Excellent dishes to say the least.

Yelp
This place is located in an office type of building so it can easy to miss. There is a decent amount of parking. The interior was spacious, modern and clean. When we were there, we were surprised, because we were the only ones. The restaurant didn't get too crowded either. The staff was friendly and the service was decent. The butter chicken here was probably the best butter chicken I have tasted. It tasted different and better than all the past butter chickens I have tried. The garlic naan and the tandoori chicken were delicious as well. The tandoori chicken was not dry and went well with the provided sauces. I tried pani puri for the first time and it was okay. This is now my favorite Indian restaurant.

Yelp
Excellent palak chaat and chai. Ambiance is nice and informal. Service is very prompt. Prices are reasonable for this area

Yelp
Went here for my birthday, we heard that this location used to be the Santana Row location. The inside was pretty so so compared to the old place, and had barely anyone in it. Not usually a problem for me. I had the butter chicken which I am giving a mixed review to- the sauce is amazing, one of the best I have ever had- a lot on the buttery side, BUT the quality of the chicken has deteriorated from when I used to come here about 20 years ago. The chi icken quality has been replaced from fine shredded chicken to that of a lower end indian restaurant. The garlic naan was tasty, but portion size was extremely small- needed to get 2 in order to get full!

Yelp
First things first, the food is Excellent! We had a small gathering of 4 families & were looking for a central place in the Bay area & stumbled upon Amber. Believe, they have recently moved from Santana row to Milpitas. Back to food, the quality is Amber-SFO like, their signature Palak chat is a must. Chicken Hara(Green) tikka & 65 both nicely done. The main courses - Dum ka Mutton, Goan Fish curry & Chicken Chettinad were top-notch - not overly creamed or spicy. Saag Corn is worth the risk. The portion sizes are generous & prices are pretty decent. The manager, staff are very friendly & efficient. The place is spacious, the decor could do a minor makeover. Don't get bothered by the obscure location. Overall very happy with the experience & would recommend it highly for group gatherings.

Yelp
Amber India in Milpitas offers authentic North Indian cuisine, emphasizing Mughlai dishes prepared with traditional techniques like tandoor cooking. The menu features a variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, including popular items such as Palak Chaat, Tandoori Chicken, and Butter Chicken. Some flavorful vegetarian dishes, fast, & friendly service.Love their brunch buffet. We were here during Diwali and the food was delicious as we remember when it was on Santana Row. Overall, Amber India in Milpitas provides a cozy atmosphere with attentive service, making it a notable option for those seeking Indian cuisine in the area. it's a solid spot to spice up your meal plans. Just remember, they're closed on Mondays - even curry needs a rest day!

Yelp
Amazing food! Satisfying and great service. We always come here for our Indian food fix. Manager Godfrey is very accommodating.

Yelp
My husband and I absolutely love coming to Amber India! It's become our new go-to spot for everything from delicious pani puri to warm, comforting chai tea. Every dish we've tried is bursting with authentic flavor and always tastes freshly made -- A special shout-out to the manager, Godfrey, who is incredibly welcoming and attentive. Highly recommend to anyone craving flavorful, high-quality Indian food in a friendly and inviting atmosphere!

Yelp
We went to Amber india to do a wedding food tasting and this experience was absolutely out of the world. The service here was absolutely impeccable. Once we got into Amber the ambiance is very nice for a yummy Indian sit down meal. We ended up trying: * three cheese tikki asparagus - we liked our crispy this was on the outside and soft on the inside. We wish there was a little more cheese in there but otherwise enjoyed * pesto paneer tikka - this was soft and well flavored, and for any fan of paneer this is a go to! * wild mushroom chettinadu pouch - if you are looking for mushrooms wrapped around a crispy crunchy exterior, this is a nice dish for you *Peshawari murgh tikka - this was absolutely the best thing ever - if you are looking for juicy succulent pieces of chicken, well seasoned, this is absolutely something you must try * boti kabob - I really loved these also, the pieces of lamb were juicy and tender, but I also really loved the seasoning on these * karavali macchi cutlet - this was a fish cutlet made of fish and potatoes, it could use a bit more seasoning but it was nice and crispy and went well with the sauce it cane with * Sarson ka saag - this is green goodness, it's creamy and delicious and went well with the naan * Kadai paneer - made with bell peppers and onions this paneer dish was tender and flavorful. Would highly recommend * kurkuri bhindi - this was crispy and crunchy as well as super flavorful. We had some leftovers for the parents and they loved it * dal palak - this was simple yet delicious. Perfect addition to the rest of the meal * ambers butter chicken - this was creamy, flavorful and delicious. The pieces of chicken were also very tender which I loved * goat masala - this was also really yummy and the curry was very flavorful. Loved the bone in lamb! * naan/ pulao/ raita / salad - all the accompaniments were delicious and fresh. We couldn't stop eating! * Santra firni - this was nice and creamy, however I could not get the orange taste enough and felt it could be a little sweeter * kala jamun with rabdi - this was the star of the show, the warm jamun with cold cream rabdi was to die for. I could not stop eating this. Godfrey who was helping us packed us some extra for our parents who absolutely loved it Overall the food was yummy and Godfrey and the chef cooking for us was absolutely a delight to talk to and work with. Would highly recommend to check out this business and location for future events/dinners in general!

Yelp
We went here by chance as we wanted an Indian place in Milpitas and found this place on Yelp. We were very happy with our discovery. The food was both plentiful, and delicious. The service and ambience were friendly and elegant. I highly recommend this place for dine in and take out.
google avatar

Yelp
This was an interesting experience. To Note: this place does not serve alcohol. The restaurant is pretty large and we went for the lunch buffet. Considering that the restaurant was half filled, we were surprised that there was a shortage of many items while we were there. It was Mother's day and they seemed a bit short staffed. We had to wait a while (as well as other tables) to get our Naan. BUT it was nice and hot once we did get it. They ran out of plates at the buffet area . You would think that they had enough plates considering the restaurant was only half full. So people had to wait for plates to be restacked. They also kept running out of certain buffet items. Had to wait a bit but they would be make sure to refill it. The food was okay, but I think the experience is why I will not be coming back.

Yelp
All the food items prepared by Head chef Shiv were on point and mouth watering, good portion size, decent ambiance, and absolutely a great value value for the buck! For reference I Have had palak chat at Ettan, and I liked Amber's palak chat way better than Ettan ( portion size, flavors and the $$ ). The tandoori chicken was sizzling and delish! I went there for butter chicken and it came out to be as I wished for. The server Venkatesh was very pleasant and took great care of our party. Definitely coming back for the yummy food. Thank you! UPDATE-- I ordered food for a house party, and the butter chicken, kothimbir chicken and naan were so so good, additionally the staff was kind to send me a sampler of some assorted Indian mithai complimentary. The delicious food + the thoughtfulness goes a long way! Thank you

Yelp
Excellent food and service. We ordered snack items , naan and butter chicken. All are very tasty. Service is little slower. Can be better.
google avatar

Monica C.

Yelp
The food quality was pretty good. The service was extremely slow. We were only two parties in the restaurant . The barbecue chicken was okay although very fresh. The biryani was good and the yellow daal was delicious. I became a fan of the yellow Daal.
google avatar

Donna N.

Yelp
We always were a fan of the one in Santana Row but not as good as we had hoped. A bit disappointed. Might not return.
google avatar

Megha R.

Yelp
We've been ordering take out from this restaurant for a few year now. The staff are helpful and do consider modifications to existing dishes to suit our needs. We don't eat very spicy food so this is a plus. We typically order paneer with the butter chicken sauce as it's creamy, delicious and not spicy. Both the butter naan and garlic naan taste very good. A pretty solid option for North Indian cuisine in Milpitas.
google avatar

Quynh T.

Yelp
Refreshing take on Indian cuisine where the flavors are on point, the food was tasty and timed out perfectly, the balance of spices come together with each bite is such a delight! Godfrey was an excellent host and very approachable. He made great recommendations and we look forward to try more dishes next week! Definitely a hidden gem!

Gurp M.

Yelp
I have been to other locations of Amber, this Milpitas is not only the worst from others, food is does not even meet the basic standard. Went on Mother's Day with wife and two 12yrs and 14 year old paid $160. Came out pissed off with quality of the food was never going back. So here is the good, bad and the ugly. 1. Ambiance is terrible for a high end restaurant 2. Saag was so terrible. It looked like they melted crayons so unappetizing 3: Naan was fresh and great. 4: butter chicken was okay, not great as other locations. 5. Dishes were labeled nut free yet had nuts while my son has nut allergies I wouldn't recommend going to this location.
google avatar

Yelp
Went on a weeknight and was pleasantly surprised with the food. We ordered Pani puri, chaat, Amber dal, butter chicken, goat curry and chicken birayni. Our fav was the butter chicken and biryani. It's also reasonably priced so will def get food from here again. The only thing that was just okay was the pani puri - we felt they were stuffed it too much and there wasnt enough pani to make them juicy.

Yelp
UPDATE: the restaurant refunded our money this morning. We have changed our review from 1 star to 4 star (on our own) because we actually LOVE Amber. They are by far our favorite Indian restaurant. We were just really frustrated because we live in Lodi (2 hrs away) so we were really, really looking forward to get our butter chicken fix. We placed an order through Bento Box a little after 4:30 (I arrived by car at this time and waited outside). I walked and checked at the front desk at 5:10 and was told they had received the order two minutes prior. I went back outside to wait for the text message that it was ready. By 5:41 I hadn't received the message so I left. Finally at 6:11 I receive this message: "Your Amber India Restaurants order #12075866 is ready to be picked up at 556 S Milpitas Blvd, CA, Milpitas 95035", about 1 hr and 45 minutes after we placed the order. We called and were told that the food was ready shortly after I had walked in. So from the time the food was ready, around 5:10, you did not notify us that the food was ready for pick up until 6:11. If the food was ready around 5:10, why did you wait until 6:11 to notify us? You wasted almost two hours of our time and we didn't get any food. When we called to get a refund the restaurant refused.

Yelp
We recently hosted our son's 1st birthday party at Amber India Milpitas. It was simply a fabulous experience. Food was very delicious and service was outstanding. The place gets a lot of natural light and just improved the overall ambience for the event. Godfrey and Vignesh really nailed it for us. Whatever they committed to us in terms of the food menu, service, timings, decor they executed it religiously. All our guests were so happy and thoroughly enjoyed the event. Thank you so much Amber India for giving us a memory of life time. Certainly looking forward to hosting more such events and get togethers going forward !

Yelp
Food quality and spice level is exactly how they had it when they were in Santana Row. Those who need mild to medium spice this is the place. They are quick to seat you and take your order. Food also doesn't take long to come. Simple ambiance.

Sasikala M.

Yelp
Food always tasty just the right balance of spices . A good place for worktime lunch in the area. Buffet was really good too . I like the decor staff was just okay .

RJ N.

Yelp
I wanted to try this restaurant for a long time. Tried a to-go on a Sunday. Tried their Ramza special chicken biryani. Biryani was dry, chicken did not seem fresh and the taste was not good. Really disappointed with this one. Especially when the restaurants was not busy. Wasted $19+.
google avatar

Yelp
I have been her a few times now and I must say definitely my "go to" spot for great Indian food. The food is amazing, with well balanced spices and flavors; good portions as well. The decor inside is very classy and clean. Also plenty of easy parking outside. However most of all...the service here is first class! Our waiter is extremely attentive and provides warm service. The GM here is a great guy and makes the extra effort to all the customers to ensure your experience is amazing. Highly recommended.

Dong Wook C.

Yelp
This restaurant is not situated in a typical strip mall. At first, I thought the GPS had led me to the wrong place as I pulled into what appeared to be a warehouse parking lot. Don't let the exterior discourage you from entering the building. The restaurant is spacious and nicely decorated inside. Great place to bring family or even have date night with your spouse or significant other. The food was delicious. Really yummy butter chicken. Their mango lassi was refreshing. The wait staff and management were attentive and courteous. Godfrey (bless his heart) was so sweet and kind. Thus, the 5 star rating. I really hope you Milpitas residents and out-of-towners alike will give this place a try, especially if you like Indian food. Support your local small business and show some love for this new restaurant.

Bharti M.

Yelp
Visited Milpitas location on Jan1st. Setup and ambiance is in warehouse. Not good at all. Worst of all food was really cold for lunch buffet around 1 PM. Not enough choices. Also 30 dollars for very few items is extremely high. I will NOT go to this location at all. Please try something else.
google avatar

Suresh B.

Yelp
We had business lunch for 30 folks at Amber Milpitas location. Everyone loved the buffet. The buffet had nice variety of dishes for both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. Right from appetizers- 2x veg and 2x non-veg with mint and sweet chutney, then naan with 4x type of curries, rice and then 2x dessert. We also received courteous service. This location has nice interior and ambience of our business lunch and get together. The manager Godfrey was kind and accommodating our request to provide a private space for socializing.
google avatar

Paola R.

Yelp
I got the butter chicken, rice, garlic naan, and gobi Manchurian. The butter chicken was very flavorful and tender. The garlic naan was delicious crispy and flavorful. The gobi Manchurian was slightly spicy, crispy and savory. Service was nice and waiter was attentive, the inside was spacious and incredibly clean compared other restaurants I've been too. Portions were a little small for the price but the quality made up for it so I didn't mind! I would definitely go here again.

Anika D.

Yelp
At first I was confused and not impressed by the location. However, the food was amazing and service was good. Would go back again!
google avatar

D S.

Yelp
Pretty good. Chole samosa and gobi manchurian was delicious. I wanted more from saag but it was decent. Butter chicken was creamy and good too- not on the sweet side, but wanted a little more spice and tang. Naan was sturdy. Mango lassi was delish. Cool venue, quick service
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent customer service and cleanliness. Professional. Smells divine. Had the naan, spinach paneer, riata and butter chicken. Will 100% be back.

Yelp
We had six different dishes and all of them were delicious! Everyone in our group raved about how tasty everything was. Will definitely be back Highly recommend!
google avatar

Mahesh H.

Yelp
Very friendly staff. Vignesh has been super kind and's professional and this was my second visit here. We ordered Butter Chicken Methi chicken Breads Kotimbir chicken All of them were stellar and will surely recommend all to try the above

Rajeev E.

Yelp
I went early the service, food and settings were good. But the place seems like a banquet hall...just felt odd. Not bad...just odd.
google avatar

Candi L.

Yelp
This is a new large location. It seemed odd at first being in the industrial area but they have done the inside very well and transformed it into a nice restaurant with a large party rooms. They have a great selection of menu items. We ordered the samosas, garlic naan, aloo gobi and butter chicken. All of the items were very tasty and top quality. Portions are a bit small for 3 people to share but good for lunch portions for us. Will be back soon!

Ravin K.

Yelp
We ordered party food from Amber for 18 people and it was amazing experience. Got food in boxes, no need to hot it again before serving. Delicious food and very good quantity, Reasonable price and super hospitality.
google avatar

Aubrey M.

Yelp
Call before going. We were sad when the Amber India closed down in the prune yard, but happy to know one was in Milpitas. We drove 30 minutes from San Jose only to see a sign on the door that they are closed due to a private event. We love them and they have great food but this was very disappointing and annoying after driving so long.
google avatar

Thi L.

Yelp
I found Amber India through a Tiktok and I've dined there twice. The food here might be the best Indian food I've ever had. I recommend ordering the palak chaat, the somasas, and the chicken kabob (it was super flavorful and juicy). The manager is extremely kind and welcoming. He even recognized me when I came for the second time. He would check on our dining experience throughout the meal and provide recommendations from the menu. Although the restaurant is in an industrial park and looks unassuming on the outside, it's beautiful on the inside. The decor is bright and colorful with lots of natural light. Overall, the food and service are amazing and I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
Plenty of private parking Beautiful layout with soft music makes for a relaxing atmosphere. They do tons of catering, but are not too busy on a Sunday afternoon. Going for sone Tandoori chicken with garlic naan for a quick lunch .... Super flavorful meal, very enjoyable.

Amy M.

Yelp
Godfrey and his team was great! The food is delicious. It was a strange location but everything was delicious and the service was attentive. Can't wait to return.
google avatar

Apoorva H.

Yelp
We hired Amber as our caterer for our wedding. Tarun helped to organize a tasting at their South Bay location and incorporated our notes into the final catering menu. They were also willing to create some dishes that weren't on their menu (indo-chinese snacks) and provide some small number of Jain plates for some of our guests that did not eat onion or garlic. The food, both at lunch & dinner, was a big hit at our wedding, even from our guests from India. Would highly recommend catering from Amber at your next event

Yelp
Despite having been part of one of the oldest restaurants chain in the Bay Area, Amber Cafe, Milpitas remains a hidden gem! Its inconspicuousness may be attributed to its location, but it offers spacious dining, clean and pleasant ambiance, an experienced and professional management in Mr. Godfrey, excellent service, and above all delicious food.

Udayan J.

Yelp
Limited menu. Service and ambiance are good. Food is less spicy than expected. Chettinad chicken is good.
