The 38 Best Restaurants in Sydney, Australia | Eater

"Ambi Thind can create around 40 types of chai. They perfume the air as you walk into the tiny, caravan-like shop he opened in 2018. These captivating scent-clouds of cardamom, cloves, ginger, and other spices are generated by staff as they prep and stir bubbling pots of Afro-Punjabi brews inspired by Thind’s youth in Kenya, where locals dialled up the spice strength of masala chai. Each brew — many named after people Thind knows, including regulars, staff members, or hockey players he formerly coached — reflects its namesake. Brooksy’s Chai is fuelled by earthy ajwain seeds, Maddy’s Mzungu buzzes with 40 peppercorns and melted chocolate, and the Amritsar is a cardamom-charged reminder of Thind’s travels to the Indian city. Must-try dish: If you prefer milder brews, start with the signature pour. For a taste of Ambi’s joyfully potent style, go for the Smokey drink." - Lee Tran Lam

Really cool and unique boutique venue adjacent to Wynyard. They have combos available to get more bang for your buck, I had the African inspired chicken with Roti and Smoky Chai and it was very reasonably priced at $20. The chicken was delicious, with the brightness of pineapple, tender chicken breast and did I detect a hint of Tamarind chutney? I have no idea if this is authentic African style food but it was delicious. Could have used more chilli, I will ask for extra spicy next time! The chai was sensational, complex and not overly sweet. I would love to try more varieties, lucky for me I work nearby and will be back soon. I also was happy to receive great service, the staff were friendly and super accommodating. It is a small space so consider takeaway as tables were in high demand. A stand out, must visit spot. They are doing something different and I loved it. Veterans discount offered.

Ambi Chaibar in Sydney is a small eatery located opposite the 275 Kent Street Westpac office. I recently tried their roti roll, which was priced at $16. While the taste was good, I found it to be overpriced for the portion size. The roll itself was well-made, with fresh ingredients and decent flavours, but it wasn’t particularly large or filling to justify the cost. The place is quite small, more of a grab-and-go spot rather than a sit-down restaurant. Given its location in the CBD, it seems to cater to office workers looking for a quick bite. However, at this price point, there are better value options available nearby. I have yet to try their chai, which seems to be a key part of their offering. If the chai stands out, it might make the experience feel more worthwhile. But based on the roti roll alone, I wouldn’t rush back unless they reconsider their pricing. We are in the midst of a cost of living crisis. I want the businesses to thrive. So please kindly consider affordable options so that your business can thrive.

Wonderful little spot! So glad it's opened in the middle of the CBD. The chai is just perfect, staff are super friendly. Suggestion - $7 is too high a price for chai. You could reduce the quantity and price it to match the "regular coffee" . That way, people have an alternative to have either coffee or a chai and not have to skip chai because of the higher price point.

Love the chai here. Bold flavours really hit the spot and lift you up. Will be back. Thanks to Leo and Joaquin (hope I spelled that right) for the chai making. Will be back.

Love that Ambi’s Chai Bar is in CBD now, so you can grab chai (when you want a hot drink other than coffee)! Ashlee’s Chai is so delicious. Desi Chai is the popular choice for my workmates. Would love to try other drinks too in the future. If you dine in, the Chai is served in a glass (which makes it eco friendly). There are about 12 seatings inside. Friendly service too.

On recommendation from a friend I thought I will have some savoury Indian snack and chai to go with. Went in with high expectations and came out completely disappointed. At 2.30 pm I was told the kitchen is closed so I can't order any food. Came the 1st punch right on the face. You are a tiny eatery who are already closing early in the day at 3 pm. So I am offered to have a samosa instead. Ok, I thought I got some consolation. Got ready to eat a nice Indian samosa tagged with Desi chai. He offered to heat it for me, I got even more excited. So I go ahead and order my desi chai and a samosa. I saw people having chai in a take away while some sitting in and sipping in a glass. So I enquired if I could have my chai in a regular cup or glass instead of take away as I planned to sit and have it there. Came out the 2nd punch, the weirdo (iykyk) says.. NO, we don't have time to clean the cups now and you must have it in a take away. My preference is not to have extra hot drinks in take away for obvious reasons.. they are plastic coated. After a lot of haggling the other person in the kitchen offered to serve it in a glass. Ok, now comes the final knock out punch for me. Chai is served after a wait of about 20 mins. By now they have already forgotten that I have also ordered a samosa. After saying I have already ordered they again ask me if I'd like it heated. To which I eagerly say.. yes pls. To my surprise the samosa is shoved in the microwave for a minute and comes out as a soggy momo. 😱😱😱 What have you done?? You have killed all the Indianness from the poor samosa. I tell them that the samosa is soggy and drenched in oil. Worst thing for a samosa and an Indian to be served a samosa in that state. Not to mention, it is the tiniest of the samosa you will find in entire Sydney. No sause, no chutney offered. To this, I am now served an ice cold samosa from tge fridge. Request the owner to pls go and try and have a cold samosa at your place. Absolute shame. The staff has no politeness nor any idea how the food needs to be served. Hire some good staff who have knowledge of hospitality industry. 1 * is for good tea. But half an hour ruined by the overall experience. And yes, the place is overpriced as mentioned in other reviews.
