Where to Drink at the Movies in Boston | Eater Boston

"It’s a chain, but the theater chairs are comfortable — and outside the theater, there’s plenty to eat throughout the Assembly Row development. Taste some beers at the American Fresh Taproom (from the makers of Slumbrew) down the block, and then catch a blockbuster while sipping on something from the theater’s MacGuffins Bar. (Yes, the bar is named for the plot device.)" - Terrence Doyle

Great Movie Teather. Great food options and a bar !!! We got the side seats after recommendations from the ticket girl and were a great experience. Seats turned to recliner !!! Best part ever. Staff was ok. Helpful enough. The place was clean.

AMC Assembly Row Review: "A Mid Spectacle, But No Oscar Winner!" "In a world… where theaters compete for glory… one AMC stands…mid-ly." Queen and I rolled up to AMC Assembly Row like two stars in our own low-budget rom-com—"Parking? Easy. Seats? Waiting. Refreshement stand soda? Shared like true cinematic soulmates." This theater is no Alamo Drafthouse—"The Godfather of movie-going experiences"—but it’s a solid B-movie sequel. The seats? Comfortable, but don’t expect the "heated luxury of Alamo’s throne room."The cleanliness? "Mostly pristine, like a set right before the cameras roll." The vibe? "Not quite ‘premiere night,’ more like ‘Tuesday matinee with half-price tickets.’" But hey, it’s close, it’s easy, and it gets the job done—"like that trusty sidekick who never gets a spin-off." If Alamo is 5-star dining, AMC Assembly Row is "a decent fast-food burger—familiar, reliable, but not changing the game." Final Verdict:"Mid… but sometimes, mid is all you need." 🍿✨

Hands down one of my favorite spots for a movie night. The seats are incredibly comfortable, the sound is top-notch, and the staff is always welcoming. I caught a late showing last weekend, and everything—from the popcorn to the perfectly timed previews—felt like a well-composed experience. There’s something about this place that makes it feel golden every time. Highly recommend grabbing tickets in advance—this place fills up fast, and for good reason.

Google
Almost always a great experience. The employees are kind, theaters are rarely dirty. The IMAX and Dolby theaters are some of the best in the area. If you see at least two movies each month, definitely subscribe to their A List and download the app. You can see four movies EVERY WEEK, in any format, at no additional charge. That's basically 16 movies for about $28 a month. Can't beat it. The adjacent parking garage has free parking for the first three hours, which is adequate for most movies.

Google
So there is no seating in the lobby, which is terrible for people with chronic pain and/or disability. The only seating is in the bar and hi-tops which is again problematic for those with disabilities. We were in theatre 11 and it was so hot! The lobby where the employees work nice and cool, which I absolutely support- but spare some air for your patrons! I probably won't be back again. The chairs are comfy though and you can put the arm rest down and cuddle.

Google
Movie was great. However, food was not. Not only did we wait nearly 20 mins for hotdogs there was a lot of cross contamination happening. No fresh gloves. The table they used had just about everything on there. No sense of urgency whatsoever. The actual theater? Disgusting. First of all, people stealing seats. The amount of food left behind from previous showings. Idk for the amount of money you pay, AMC assembly row could definitely do better.

Google
I attended an 8pm showing at AMC on a Friday and was really disappointed by the cleanliness in the theater. When I walked to my seat, there were drinks, popcorn, and snacks scattered everywhere not just at my seat, but also in several other seats nearby. There were no attendants present to clean up before the show started, I had to clean after the last guest just so I can seat. I understand that running a theater is a business and sometimes things can get hectic, but the appearance and cleanliness really matter for the movie-going experience. Instead of rushing to open the doors for the next showing, please take a little extra time to clean and reset the theater for new guests. It would make a big difference and leave a better impression!

Yelp
Solid movie theater, easy to get to and always a good time. They even have a full bar where you could get yourself a drink while watching the movie. However, easy to see what movie theaters are becoming a thing of the past. $6.00 for a bottle water and another $6.00 for a Diet Coke! We left the register laughing out of the sheer ridiculousness of it all.
google avatar

Anonymous U.

Yelp
There are plenty of theaters and tickets are fairly priced! Staff is friendly! My complaints are it is usually pretty dirty in there and the snacks are way overpriced but that's how it is at any movie theater.
google avatar

Manfred S.

Yelp
There is no other movie theater location more convenient for me than Assembly Row. Parking is super easy and free as long as the movie is under two hours. A complete unknown made us exceed the 3 hour limit if you account for concessions and commercials. The little theater (probably #3 but I am not sure) had terrible seats. Cushioning was worn so badly that I would have been more comfortable on a wooden board.

Charley B.

Yelp
If you actually want to enjoy a movie, maybe just stay home. The theater itself is fine, but the overall experience? Awful. The staff couldn't care less. People were openly on their phones the entire movie--texting, scrolling, lighting up the theater like it's a concert. There was talking, disruptions, zero courtesy. And look, I get that's not 100% the staff's fault, but when it's brought to their attention, they should at least pretend to care. No follow-up. No effort. Just a shrug and "sorry." When did people get so disrespectful? It's two hours. Put your phone away. It'll still be there when the credits roll. Spending $30+ on a movie and food just to sit in a room full of glowing screens and loud conversations? No thanks. Not worth the price, not worth the hassle.
google avatar

Frank A.

Yelp
Theater used to be great but it's getting dumpy. Projections, sound, etc still fine but seats are getting torn and the seat numbers have been removed and moved around - making it hard to find your seat. Whole place is going downhill rapidly.

Yelp
This is my thing......I love the movies. It's my safe space, where I go to decompress. And I love Assembly, so when they put AMC there, I was delighted. It used to be a fine establishment. Everyone knows movie theater food ain't ever worth the figure.....so that's not what you should come here for. The Mac & Cheese bites though......gimme 72 of 'em right now! Lol, but in terms of the environment... As the years have gone by, this place has gone downhill. 'Downhill' ain't even the word. It's, well, like most people are saying...sleepy, dirty, sticky, smelly, etc. And a sticky seat here and there is normal, but it just makes me really sad to see a place I love get treated so horribly. I mean, you have people such as myself who pay the membership fee because of their love of film....you'd think management would do right by their loyal patrons who help keep theater business alive. But bathrooms are a hot mess ALWAYS, soda machines out of service, theaters are really dirty from prior screenings. I hope they do better......it really takes away from the beauty that is Assembly Row.

Yelp
Came here to watch the much awaited Meg Ryan rom-com 'What Happens Later' tonight! We've been here once before too. Great location right in the mall here at Assembly Row! Lots of parking! This theater is great has many screens and the seats are very comfy! Leather chair seating. Screen is big and sound quality is good. Common areas were clean and restrooms were clean too. Overall good experience!
google avatar

Danielle T.

Yelp
This movie theater is just okay. I came here last week to see a movie with my family. The seats recline and are reasonably comfortable, but the restrooms were filthy. I prefer Showcase Cinemas over AMC as they seem to take better care of their facilities.

Yelp
It was so COLD! I had to go and ask for the heat to be put on but they said that a company controls the heating.

Yelp
I went to see the Shazam and also John Wick: Chapter 4 at this theater. I was disappointed that the up escalator was not working. So it's a workout to get to the theater floor from the entry. The theater is nice. The concessions was a little confusing but it seems like the regulars knew what was going on. The popcorn sucked though. They had a lot of popcorn pre-made and it was stale like it was from several days ago. :( So that sucked for a 3hr movie. I'm not sure why they had so much pre-made popcorn. It was under heat lamps but that just made it warm and stale.

Yelp
Went to this theater for the encore of Met in HD's Marriage of Figaro. For the entire first half and most of the 2nd, the audio wasn't synced with the video. Finally in the 2nd half, the screen went black for a few seconds and when it came back, the syncing problem was resolved. So it could have been fixed much earlier but no one working there was paying attention. Also, the video quality throughout didn't look like HD. All in all, very disappointing.

dennis G.

Yelp
We went to see the Metropolitan Opera's Tosca. 1. When the show started (I assume it was a broadcast) there was audio but no sound. 2.Then the audio disappeared and we had to wait (I'd guess) 5 minutes, with a few audience members going out to find someone to talk to, before the show commenced. 3. When it did it was projected at the wrong aspect ratio -- the top and bottom extended beyond the screen, making it hard to read the subtitles. More audience members went out to find someone. Probably another 5-minutes before this was fixed. 4. When Act III came on, after an intermission, the house lights stayed on. Again, more audience members went hunting for someone. My impression is that nobody there is paid to care much whether the show goes smoothly.

Yelp
This movie theater use to be beautiful when it first opened I DO NOT KNOW WHAT HAPPENED it is absolutely disgusting now I mean GROSS! You can hear and feel the filth on your shoes when you walk in. The theatre it self was filthy with the cup holders full of trash for The last show! The bathrooms?! OMG SMH! Health inspectors should be called take your own soap and purell people. Even though the staff of high school/ college kids the state of that business makes the management team who ever and wherever they were look very bad and poor at their job not that they care, but for your own safety I would suggest another theatre where it's cleaner and there's actual Food on the menu AND CLEAN THEATERS!

Frank G.

Yelp
Prices are too low..Charge for Water $100 one hundred for service $100 for anything extra Beer wine &coffee $100 No limit

Ruby C.

Yelp
They found my bag, 48 hours later. A bit suspicious, but it's fine. Management, please put a protocol when someone alerts that property was stolen.
google avatar

Blake L.

Yelp
I get being a high schooler or college student having a job at the movies and not really caring but there's some other employees here who are absolutely miserable! Popcorn is stale. It's like they made a bunch so they wouldn't have to make more for the rest of the night. Just a really crappy place to go and see a movie. It really isn't that hard to no help people enjoy a product which requires us to sit for a couple hours and watch a screen yet this place manages to do so.
google avatar

Tara N.

Yelp
Wow. We were so surprised at how nasty this place was, especially considering the location and being somewhat new. There were at least 7-8 high schoolers working (and I use that loosely), one was sitting on the counter, and the rest were either socializing or standing around. I don't really consider this their fault, there were no adults around to keep them accountable. Every single surface of that place was absolutely disgusting. Crumbs, food, dirt, grime. We ordered fries and pretzel bites yet, they were out of all condiments. You're telling me an AMC theater can't afford mustard? Ok. The icing on the cake was they were doing some drilling or construction during the movie. It's 8pm...we could hear it the majority of the movie, which BTW was "A quiet place", that is supposed to be quiet for much of the movie.
google avatar

Savannah H.

Yelp
It is so cold. I can't explain how cold it is without calling to mind the arctic. It doesn't matter what the outside temp is, inside is positively freezing. I left my movie from discomfort, wearing a tshirt and Jean pants, in June, because it was so cold i genuinely thought I'd go into shock if I stayed. The area outside the theaters is normal temp but the theatre is a tundra. I had long full jeans and a top and nearlt cried from the cold. Plus the movie didn't start on time. I would rather kick my grandma than sit in those temperatures for 1-2 hours I actually couldn't sit through my whole movie because of the temperature. I was wearing jeans and a tank top very weather approaiate But I was so cold I had to leave halfway through. Purely bc I was so cold I stopped having thoughts. I had taken bathroom breaks for warmth but that meant missing the movie
google avatar

Yelp
I saw an incredible movie so I'll start by saying this isn't a review on the film. This establishment is horribly run. Where do I begin.. it is run by a group of adolescents with no adult in sight. I'm all for younger kids working but you arrive at the theater and not one employee speaks up, makes eye contact with you & is helpful in anyway shape or form. I first arrived and the two story elevators were BROKEN. Now, I'm an able body but there were no signs it was broken and all I could think about were the folks who may be disabled and unable to get up those 60 flight of stairs.. next, the bathrooms.. I got to a bathroom that was out of order so I walked to another where there wasn't toilet paper in any of the stalls, trash bins completely full etc. There had to be at least ten teenagers working there so to me, it shouldn't take much to fix that.. I also ordered food ahead of time and when I went to go pick it up there was again more teenagers standing around no one confirming my order or any acknowledgement of my existence. A confirmation it was in the works would have been nice even but instead they were sitting on their phones and staring into the sky. By the time I did get my food, I was almost late to the movies. Lastly they pre-make popcorn and put them under these fluorescents lights and there's no instruction on whether your supposed to take them if you ordered online ahead of time- it didn't stop people from taking them though .. many assumed popcorn was free and took them and walked to their movie. Lastly, the pop corn was stale, cold, and had no taste. Overall like I said great movie, but if you go to a late night film here be prepared for horrible horrible service. The place was a dump. Not impressed and won't be returning, I see why people Netflix and chill inside their houses. AMC, do better.

Shawna R.

Yelp
This is the Nastiest movie theater I have ever seen. Theater 12 smelled of garbage and urine, it actually started smelling in the hallway leading down to theater 12. I asked to go into another movie theater, to see a movie I didn't even want to see, because we were already here. Chairs are broken, old, some torn, and dirty. Someone I was with brought food, Im diabetic and wouldn't even eat it stale popcorn. If the theater as a whole looks dirty, I know you're not cleaning the soda machines or the popcorn area. Bathroom is gross. It's really sad nobody cares about it. Had so much potential. If I could negative stars I would. ---. Done

Yelp
I was very pleased with my first experience at the Assembly Row AMC! Hands down a much more enjoyable experience than the Boston Common location. Updated, clean, & comfy trumps all. The Assembly Row AMC is conveniently located just a 5 minute walk from the Orange Line and in the heart of so many shops, restaurants, and activities. When arriving for our movie, we went up the escalator, 2 sets to be exact, and finally met a front desk for tickets to purchase or scan if pre-bought. I was a little surprised by the set up for concessions. There was a long line for a grab & go popcorn. Then, once you grab your size popcorn, you loop into another line to pay and purchase more snacks or drinks. It was organized, but took so much longer than expected. Unfortunately, as well, only one of the 5(?) butter dispensers was working, as well. We bought tickets for the cozy rocking chair seats. Really nothing to complain about. Seems that the front rows and the sides were the recliners. I'll be back!
google avatar

Katherine R.

Yelp
Run of the mill movie theater. It seemed a bit run down and dated but it was fine for watching a movie. It had the big seats with 2 cup holders each, which was great, but the seats only rocked back and forth and didn't recline or have a foot rest, so that could be improved. My only big disappointment was the woman's bathroom.. it was gross.
google avatar

Joey G.

Yelp
What used to be a beautiful movie theater is now a broken, dilapidated unmanaged mess. I understand that blockbuster movies are not a thing at the moment, but please avoid this movie theater at all costs. The place was falling apart, they sold us chairs that didn't even recline properly and were broken (see picture). Don't get me started on the concessions, which had no CO2 for the drinks but they were still selling them. The popcorn had seemed like it had been sitting there since the morning. $16 for a smart water and popcorn. Bathrooms filthy and hallways a mess. Avoid at all costs.
google avatar

Stephon M.

Yelp
Just terrible. Dirty all around. Of course when a lot of people are there its 10 times worse. Definitely not coming back. It's a wild place and a sight to see before you jump into watching a movie.
google avatar

Constance L.

Yelp
Friendly service and really great location but not very clean. When we got to our seats, there were crumbs and trash in the cup holders. Seats are roomy though!
google avatar

Cassandra B.

Yelp
The only way to see a movie here is in the IMAX theater (theater #2) where every seat reclines. I'm a part of the AMC Stub Hub program, so I definitely take advantage of seeing newer releases in IMAX. The regular seats found in most of the theater rooms are equipped with less comfy standard seats. As a newcomer to the Boston area, AMC at Assembly Row is the only theater I've been to in town. It's definitely not a luxury theater but it's a pretty decent option. I like that you can pick your seats on the AMC app ahead of time. Now I don't have to worry about arriving early! Bathrooms are clean-ish and parking is covered. You get 3 free hours at most parking lots at Assembly Row. YELP'S 2020 REVIEW CHALLENGE: #9
google avatar

Matt D.

Yelp
The two best things about the AMC theater at Assembly Row is the parking garage connected to it and it's right off of Rt 93. Having it located in the Assembly Row shopping area is a nice plus too. The layout has the actual movie theater and a small concession area on the second floor. They changed the concessions to more self service, I'm assuming due to the labor shortage. I've been to many movies here given it's convenient location in relation to East Boston (when the Sumner Tunnel is open). The theaters are generally clean. No sticky floors or leftover popcorn. I've found this AMC to be less busy than the AMC Boston Common and will tend to go here on an opening weekend.
google avatar

Jenny T.

Yelp
BATHROOMS ARE SO NASTY- sinks and soap dispensers were broken, toilets didn't flush, pee stains everywhere, dirty stalls in general... clearly had not been cleaned for a while. It was very noticeable when exiting the women's bathrooms that they had not been cleaned for a while and a lot of women were disgusted by this as well lol especially during the end of the movie. As for the movie theatre itself, it was also pretty dirty. The floors had popcorn spilled everywhere... looks like it hadn't been cleaned for a while. Seats were very comfy though but this is such a dirty movie theatre...
google avatar

Arthur C.

Yelp
Out of Focus!!! Their Premium Dolby theater is extremely out of focus and distracting. Its crazy they can charge $22+ for a screen that is literally worse then any screen I've ever seen. The center of screen is bad and the edges are terrible. There is this ghosting affect where everything shows up twice as if its supposed to be a 3D movie but its not. Not possible to read text on screen . I don't know who to complain too. I tried contacting AMC through the website but nothing.
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
Loved that the parking garage was right beside (probably connected) to the theater and only cost me $3. Out of all the AMC locations I have been to, this was the most clean and well presented. I liked the bright red lights indicating the theater room. Have yet to try their bar, but will some day. Instead of popcorn, opted for nachos and a large soda. Plenty of tostitos, but the cheese was on the heater for so long, I could've drank the cheese, too liquidy. The seats didn't recline either, so that was weirdly nostalgic.
google avatar

Marissa R.

Yelp
I love this location solely because of the free parking & shopping/restaurants in the area. The theatre itself has been clean & comfy every time we've gone. I took off one star because it has been extremely loud/disruptive the past few times we've gone (kids running in & out of theatres, people talking the entire time, adults on their phones, etc.). We've seen employees try to handle the disruptions with not much luck. I recommend avoiding evenings (especially on weekends).
google avatar

Brendan M.

Yelp
This AMC could be described as middle of the road. It did not seem like the concession stands were very active or large, unsure if they had a bar. The movie and experience in the theater itself was fantastic, however seats with the reclining buttons would be an improvement versus the weight driven recliner to get in the right position for 1-3 hour movies. The seats were vert spacious and it seems like everyone got 2 cup holders which is great for snacks and your drinks.
google avatar

Nio W.

Yelp
I always enjoy being able to pick my own seats for the movies and avoiding being stuck in seats too far back or too close up. The seats are the nice leather ones but they aren't as comfortable as I like. They also don't recline like many AMC ones do. It is nice to have the middle cup holder console rise to give more space but many are wobbly and just rugged looking. I'll only come back to this place on a Tuesday when tickets are way cheaper. It's not worth full price because the ambiance is so-so and it was so cold in the theater.
google avatar

Micah H.

Yelp
Love this amc. It's one of the better ones in the area and LANDON is a wonderful employee that has been working there for a while now. When the soda machines aren't working and the bathrooms are chaos, at least there's Landon at the front to welcome us all in :)
google avatar

Marni M.

Yelp
My friends that I have come to this theater a handful of times. Before, there used to be a lot more activity, which meant fresh popcorn. The last couple times I have gone, the popcorn is relatively stale. Snack options were also more limited. Chairs are incredibly comfortable and staff has been typically friendly. Street parking can be tough but there's always the big parking lot nearby. Will end up coming back when the time is right.
google avatar

Deanna P.

Yelp
I truly cannot believe how terrible this place is. I must be a masochist because I keep going there but now I'm absolutely done. Pre-COVID they had some of the worst customer service I have ever experienced but somehow it's worse now. Details: 1. It's a confusing layout with confusing rules about how to buy food and how to enter. One of the only things that made it more convenient is the walkway from the 3rd floor of the parking lot, which they've closed... I guess for covid? Which doesn't make sense since that action in no way would make them safer. 2. I get that they're out of all kinds of product (I know many businesses are facing this), but have some level of kindness or empathy for the situation. Rude, rude, rude. 3. It. Is. FILTHY. The bathrooms are as filthy as porta potties and the theater itself looks like it hasn't been cleaned in ages. Definitely the grossest experience I've had since COVID. It's such a bummer that this place doesn't have it more together. With Arclight closing and the movie industry dying, it feels like AMC isn't even trying at all.
google avatar

Tom T.

Yelp
Great theater besides the occasional thing broken. My wife complains consistently about the thrashed women's bathroom. At least the parking is convenient and free and the popcorn is good.
google avatar

chad m.

Yelp
This theater has gone downhill. It's almost like a post apocalyptic theater. The stained seats are broken. The cup holders are wet and sticky, and if you're hungry there is always some stale popcorn and candy between the seats.

Y. R.

Yelp
I've only been in one of the theaters at this location, so I'm not sure if this is an issue in any other one. I went to a movie in theater 4 and was disappointed. I understand the bright red exit signs are mandatory, however the placement and brightness with no consideration to block the light from the screen really spoils the picture. The bottom third to half of the screen has a red or pink cast to it which is incredibly distracting and detracting from the film. I imagine this has been a problem ever since this theater was opened years ago, yet nothing has been done about it. The only reason I didn't get a refund is because I am subscribed to the monthly membership, but if I wasn't I'd definitely ask for a refund. In addition, the image was fuzzy/out of focus. It sort of looked like there was a slight doubling of the image as you looked away from the middle of the screen. This wouldn't be a print issue, but a projection problem. Why aren't professional projectionists working here? One would think with such a massive company like AMC they could afford them. In 2022 alone their profits exceeded $46,000,000. Do better AMC.

Jack L.

Yelp
Felt discriminated against, waiting in line to buy snacks, staff only served one side, and I am an A-list member. Very disappointed.
google avatar

Christina L.

Yelp
Came here to watch Avatar 2 in Dolby 3D. Assembly Row has tons of parking options available, so it makes it pretty convenient to get to. This is an ideal location and the staff is friendly. However, the location itself doesn't offer many good food options. Yes, there is a huge candy selection. But, they didn't even have jalapeños for nacho lovers. The theater itself was ok - seats were in decent condition, but I didn't like how there was only one functioning exit...it made it awkward to have tons of people crawling over us during the movie. Overall, the theater is ok, but major work should be done to revamp their menu options.
google avatar

Rob L.

Yelp
My first time back since the pandemic and being on A List. The theater I was in was so dilapidated it made me sad. The chair divider in front of me was broken and hitting my legs. Guest services was going to move me to the side reclining chairs but they had already moved people there for other broken seats. Had to be moved to the handicap seats.

Alexis B.

Yelp
Theyre icee machine is always so watery but ive never had it separate this much this fast before, its been messed up the past 3 times ive came.. so disappointed.
google avatar

Araxie M.

Yelp
This place is gross. I remember when it first opened, what it is now isn't even a fraction of that experience. The facility is humid, hot, without any air conditioning at all. The lines continue to be long and suffocating. But the worse part? The seats are ripped, the floors are stained permanently, the bathrooms are repulsive. Nothing is updated or maintained. They haven't cleaned anything!! Even if it's post-Covid, for what you're charging, it's insane -- fix your facility or close it.
google avatar

Ayatt A.

Yelp
This is our go-to movie theater and all of our experiences there have been awesome. I must say though, their regular seats, although roomy, are wildly uncomfortable. Usually my boyfriend and I pay extra for the reclining seats on the side, but last night we went to see Joker with two other friends, and my back was hurting in those regular seats. Also, the bathrooms are HEINOUS. I don't think i've ever seen them clean. There's always toilet paper everywhere and lots of the stalls don't have toilet paper period. That being said, everything else is really nice. There's free parking in the Assembly Row lot for up to 3 hours, and they have a bar too.
google avatar

Michelle H.

Yelp
Popcorn taste and smells like ita been sitting there for a while. Chairs are ripped and uncomfortable, Even after the employee's clean there is still popcorn and trash.

Dylan G.

Yelp
made us pay extra money for a movie we didjt wanna see. Had to pay for two popcorns because I touched the other one and couldn't put it back. Security guard was following us around made us miss half the movie

Came to see Hunger Games with my friend at 8pm and couldn't get a hot meal as they had closed the "kitchen" or ran out of all food! Our movie session wasn't even the last or latest one, and all they could offer was candy or popcorn which my body can't tolerate. So ironically we were watching Hunger Games being HUNGRY. Fantastic experience!
