Amelia's Donuts Review - Idyllwild - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"After getting into a heated argument over how long is too long for a family hike, it’s time to win back the cabin. And there’s no easier way to do that than showing up with a box of Amelia’s donuts the next morning. The tiny shop has only been open a few years, but already has a devout following for soft, yet slightly crispy buttermilk donuts made fresh daily. We particularly love the maple glaze and cinnamon sugar, but this is an all-around great donut shop. So just press your face up against the glass, point at the ones you want, and walk out with a glorious dozen. " - Brant Cox

I came in having to use the restroom and bought donuts to do so. Man—what a life changing experience. I got the traditional glazed and my wife got the maple. Being from LA, we have donut shops on every corner. I’ve had Voodoo, Randy’s, and all the small mom and pop shops. The glazed was fluffy as hell—it looked like a gigantic beer battered onion ring. Perfect glazing, not overtly sweet, and the dough was puffy, not cake-like. The maple tasted like a pancake made of air. I genuinely from the bottom of my heart cannot express how good they were. Try this spot out. 10/10 no notes. Oh, and the view from the bathroom window is beautiful!

We came in for coffee in the AM and impulsively bought a sticky bun. BEST STICKY BUN I’VE EVER HAD! GO HERE AND EAT THEM! You will not be disappointed!! Cute little spot too with some seating inside and out! What a find!

Google
Amazing options with gluten free and vegan. Was almost sold out but that's the best because it means the donuts and baked goods are that tasty! Couldn't get any more pictures of the food. The hubby and I inhaled them. So delicious

This is such a cute donut and more shop. There was plenty of places to pick from but this place is just cozy & welcoming with so much character. The food options are great. I got the grilled cheese and ham sandwich that I forgot to take a picture of but it was so crunchy and tasty I would order that again! I also got the blueberry muffin and that was Delicious! I love all the decorations in the shop too. There is plenty of seating inside and outside and a restroom for customers. I definitely recommend this place if you’re in town!

Google
The best donuts I had in America! I know donuts because I finished the management course for a donut shop in Osaka. The donuts are freshly made that day the owner said she came in one in the morning to start all the donuts. A good donut needs fresh oil and precise temperature control of dough, so dough doesn't absorb too much oil when they are deep fried. Her donuts are the epitome of the classic donuts made it right. The Lattes I ordered were a perfect complement for donuts. Lastly, the shop was sparkly clean. There are many antique bakeware as decorations but no dust in sight. I highly recommend this place.

I was so excited to try this place after reading all the superb reviews. Unfortunately it was a miss for me, though. The Cinnamon Sugar donut had an odd, fishy note to it. I couldn't eat more than one bite. The Traditional Glazed donut was much better, but it was so oily that I couldn't take more than two bites. Definitely disappointing. But WORST of all is that because I used my credit card there was a 7.75% "electronic fee" and a 3.9% bank fee--neither of which was mentioned. I would've used cash to pay had the cashier been transparent. Only later when looking at the receipt did I notice these additional charges.

Wow!!! Don't skip this spot! the bakery items we tried were the maple donut and carrot cake muffin.. both were incredible! Unfortunately for us, the couple times we came, we came too late so we got a breakfast sandwich and breakfast burrito that had been sitting but still was so delicious so I can only imagine it freshly cooked! The service was quick, efficient and kind. Small inside but there's seating outside which we preferred anyways. Definitely coming back here when we visit again!

I brought my granddaughters to Amelia’s today for donuts and all three of us said they were the “best donuts in the whole universe “. I had the buttermilk glaze and it was so fresh! My one granddaughter eats gluten free food and said the chocolate gluten free donuts was “AMAZING” . And the cinnamon roll tasted delicious!

Yelp
We stopped in here several times on our most recent visit to Idyllwild. The pastries are amazing. We loved all the buttermilk donuts we tried, and then we had an apple fritter. OMG! This was the best apple fritter I've ever had, absolutely to die for. The proprietors also could not have been friendlier or kinder. That seems to be the Idyllwild way, and it's one of the reasons we're planning to move up there. Check out Amelia's when you're in Idyllwild, and do not miss the apple fritters!

Yelp
My dog Elizabeth and I are regular customers at Amelia's. It is clearly one of a limited number of venues I frequent in Idyllwild. I have owned a place in Idyllwild for 2 years, have been to EVERY food establishment in this town since. There are only a few places that I frequent on a regular basis, Amelia's being one of them. I stopped by Amelia's this morning. It was a busy Saturday morning. Fact is this is Memorial Day weekend, and this town is abuzz with tourists. Amelia was at the counter (as always) happy to sell me the absolute best burrito in town. Everyone in town makes burritos, some actually get them frozen and reheat them (yup - very true). If you want an amazing burrito, a product to remember, then come here. This morning, I got the sausage burrito. It was filled with fresh eggs, hash browns and delicious sausage. Amelia packed some salsa for me. Brought the burrito back to our cabin and we were in burrito heaven. 20+ places to get food in Idyllwild when I awaken. This is one of 2 I choose. Amelia's is a donut shop that sells breakfast foods and a wonderful array of Grab-n-Go items. EVERY hot Grab-n-Go item is amazing. I live on their burritos and sandwiches. Also love their savory ham and cheese pastries, turkey and cheese pastries. I have attached their small blackboard menu. Let's discuss the decor. This place is reminiscent of my childhood growing up in the 1960s. Cute tables, donuts on display, pies and breads for sale, simple menu written on a board. Watch any Hallmark movie filmed in a small town and this place fits in perfectly. If you want fancy? You're in the wrong place. If you want quaint 1960s down home America this is the place. When tourists ask me where to go in Idyllwild, I always suggest Amelia's and 2 other places. This is not a foodie town. However, Amelia's has products that clearly will appeal to the most discerning foodie. The owners are consistently nice to my English Bulldog Elizabeth and me. Amelia's gets my highest recommendations. It is impossible not to have a great experience here.

Yelp
My wife and I have been here a few times, and have tried the breakfast sandwiches and burritos which are great, but for some reason never tried any of the donuts until today. We split a buttermilk glazed and when I say this is the best donut I've ever had, there is no exaggeration. The texture reminded me of a non-greasy funnel cake almost, with a light crisp on the outside and an airy and fluffy interior. After finishing the donut, we immediately walked back to get back in line and order several more. When we told the proprietor how amazing it was upon our return, the smile on her face was that of someone that was nothing short of gracious and proud that their hard work is appreciated. This will continue being the first stop on our bi-weekly Idyllwild visits, and we can't wait to return.

Yelp
Stopped by for a donut and was blown away. The employees told me their pastries were a 10, and they weren't lying. Knocked it out of the park and then some Donut and Carrot cake muffin were moist and not too sweet. Coffee was excellent. One of the best donuts/muffins I've ever had!
google avatar

Yelp
First time at this establishment. I only wanted a snack for my son but the pies looked amazing. Bought the raspberry peach mango pie. As I eat my third serving today, my wife and I agree this is one of the best pies we have ever eaten. It's delicious.

Yelp
Delicious donuts and breakfast burritos. Such a cute spot you need to go here when you're in town! Everything from scratch . Owners are amazing !!

Yelp
Stopped by on our way out of Idyllwild. This is a cute and small family ran place. Upon choosing our donuts we asked the woman which her favorite was and she comically said she couldn't decide as she's been making them since she was 15! You can tell they make these fresh by hand. They were deep fried goodness. For the sweet tooth highly recommend the maple glazed and the cinnamon sugar. They also have grab and go breakfast items. There are a few parking spots out front which makes grabbing and go-ing easy!

Yelp
We stopped by to get donuts before we left Idyllwild. We got the apple fritter and maple bacon bar. The apple fritter was the favorite among the two. They were both a bit greasy though. When we went around 11, almost everything was sold out so go early! I heard the gluten-free ones are good!

Yelp
This is the first time I've had a buttermilk donut that is not super dense like a cake donut. I really appreciated the non-dense texture and the crunch of the outside. The donut was still warm and it's a delightful way to start the day on a chilly 40° morning! Thanks Amelia!
google avatar

Justin P.

Yelp
Incredible donuts especially when warm. I remember taking a bite of the glazed and thinking I like it better than Krispy Kreme. The old fashioned and apple fritter were also amazing. This is probably the first stop you have to make of the day as soon as you wake up because when I went around 9:30 AM, they were out of a lot of things. The breakfast burritos are also made in batches, so if there aren't any in the warmer, you might not be able to get one. I was able to snag a fresh breakfast burrito albeit with no meat like I wanted but it was really hearty and filling. Good coffee too. It's a small space that can handle like 8 people with a few chairs outside so probably better to go as one large party can really fill the space. One man in the kitchen and one lady (I presume Amelia?) behind the counter who both have a lot to do but put a lot of heart and soul in what they put out.

Yelp
What a pleasant surprise! For all my fellow savory treat / snack lovers, Amelia's has something for us! To my delight I found a couple savory options for sale alongside the sweets that they are famous for. I happened to catch them right before closing so we missed out on the Lentil Soup special of the day and apparently they also have sourdough bread that they bake in house. Turkey Pesto Croissant: 4 stars! Delicious, buttery croissant with turkey slices, swiss cheese and just the right amount of pesto sauce throughout. Very good and I can't wait to try their ham and cheddar croissant. Of the many times I have passed by Amelia's, I had no idea that they offered a few savory items. I'll have to come back in the morning when they are fully stocked next time! Also, I saw quite a few whole pies for sale that looked delicious. I can't think of an occasion at the moment that would prompt me to buy a whole pie, but you bet I'll have to start thinking of one soon as it looks like their pies are baked with seasonal berries/fruits. I wish I had discovered this place sooner! Service/Ambiance: 5 stars! Lovely owners working the counter and a very cozy, small town vibe! Be sure to check them out and be sure to get there onl The earlier side.

Yelp
This is a cute little spot in Idyllwild for a donut or cup of coffee. The owner is so friendly and sweet and her donuts are delicious! I had a buttermilk sprinkle chocolate donut and I took a carrot cake home. My donut was warm too, which made it even better. They have options for gluten free and even a keto donut. Great job having options for everyone!
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
My daughter and I wanted a cup of coffee and began to park our car into a parking space that said " Customers Only". The owner put a no parking sign in the space as we were parking. I got out to find out what the problem was. She stated they were closing in 10 minutes in a stern, unfriendly voice. Her husband added he had to unload something. There is a loading zone in the back of their store. The woman kept going on and on and I asked her to please stop. We have a cabin here and all the business owners and employees are friendly. This is a tourist town, after all. I will NEVER frequent this place. One of the the business owners down the street said the owner is unfriendly and complains about the holiday crowds. Can't wait to try the new bakery opening in two weeks.
google avatar

Amy L.

Yelp
Oof just got the apple fritter here but based on just that item alone, I can already tell everything else here should be delicious! It's actually my first time eating an apple fritter and oh my was it heavenly! Full of apples, moist and the perfect amount of sweetness. I would definitely come back and try the other items. This place is a small bakery but also sells food items for breakfast and lunch. Small mom and pop shop as expected in this little town!
google avatar

Doreen T.

Yelp
We did not get donuts here, but the sausage breakfast burrito and the turkey swiss croissant was amazing. Both items were very generous sizing and we were stuffed! We came early in the morning around 7am and the croissant was still warm. The burrito has crispy edges and chunks of hash brown inside. The owner did say the burritos sell out quickly so come early for this deliciousness!

Yelp
GLUTEN FREE DONUTS (THAT TASTE AMAZING)! as a person with celiac disease i'm always on the hunt for gluten free goodies and Amelia's did NOT disappoint! i came back two days in a row for the chocolate donut kudos for super friendly, welcoming service!

Morgan K.

Yelp
Quaint little place. Very friendly staff. Coffee was great! Doughnuts were a little heavy (instead of light and fluffy) and were a bit drenched with oil so we didn't finish them. But other that, we had a good experience. Great little place to Stop for coffee.

Alixandra C.

Yelp
Cute and cozy vibes, the employees were very kind and welcoming. I walked in and customers were chatting and drinking some coffee. There's a display with tons of unique types of donuts, including gluten free. Got the cheese Danish, bacon/maple donut, and the chocolate buttermilk donut. All were amazing and would definenetly recommend and will be coming back.
google avatar

Wendy M.

Yelp
What a gem! We got a few donuts and coffee to take on a picnic hike. My husband got the ham and cheese croissant and I got the maple old fashioned. It was the best old fashion I had in my life. So crunchy and the frosting was great. Can't wait to go back for another visit. Such friendly service too and a great atmosphere!

Yelp
Donuts were incredible. Has the apple fritter and it was practically life changing. My partner and I discussed maybe driving up to just get some donuts and come back home (OC), that's how much we loved it. The others were quite incredible, too (sugar buttermilk, brown sugar buttermilk, and carrot cake muffin). That said, the service was lacking. I understand it's a small mountain town so labor isn't readily available so I'm not giving any marks against it so much as just trying to give guests a heads up. We waited at least 15 minutes to be served due to a long line and only one person helping guests. And once we were served it was a hurried no-words-exchanged-from-staff-just-shove-donuts-into-the-bag-as-you-point-and-say-what-you-want. I don't need a smile or a good morning, but ordering at a kiosk would have felt like better service.
google avatar

Christina X.

Yelp
It's okay. Honestly in a different place I'd only give 2 stars but want to support business in Idyllwild I personally think it's a good place to stop at for visitors to try out. I personally will not come back. The quality of the donut is good. Very soft dough, (cinnamon sugar one was harder), and not ridiculously sweet). They also have a couple vegan selections. Also had a few different pastries (croissant/muffin) for non-doubt eaters. Overall it's a cute little shop. Staff is nice and it wasn't any long line when I was there (Saturday mid morning). To be aware, they charge 3.9% bank fee if you pay with a card. They do not tell you this ahead of time and just plug that in once you are ready to check out. This is not appreciated. I understand you need the extra charge to cover your expense but please be direct and straight upfront with customers. I had cash but I figured it'd be too late by the time I saw that bank fee was there. Honestly, unhappy with it!

Yelp
VEGAN DELICIOUS!! My wife and I have been plant based/vegan for 10 years. In that time we have tried massive amounts of muffins, donuts, pies, cakes, etc. Some better than others... but none... NONE compare to the vegan blueberry muffins and vegan chocolate donuts here at Amelia's! They are perfect : fluffy, airy, not dense or oily like most of the others we have tried over the years. Both Amelia and her husband Jim couldn't be kinder, nicer and more appreciative of our patronage. We even arrived early and waited for them to open to ensure that we were able to get our muffins and donuts as they sell out super fast! In this day and age where most bakeries get their products shipped in, this lovely couple wake up when most people are going to bed to bake their delicious goods from scratch and have them ready and waiting for the 7 am opening!! Old School never tasted so good!
google avatar

M A.

Yelp
The BEST apple fritter I have ever had in my life!! It was still warm from the oven, crispy on the outside with huge chunks of apple on the inside and just heavenly flavor. And then you have the owner Amelia, who could not be lovelier, more friendly and welcoming. This is an absolute gem of a place and a must stop when you are in Idyllwild.
google avatar

Timmy S.

Yelp
I have to admit to being a bit disappointed with Amelia's donuts. I stopped in around 11am and found the selection to be waning. Not surprising since they open at 7am and seem to be quite popular. I selected three - a buttermilk chocolate, an old fashioned, and a sticky bun. The sticky bun was excellent. Moist, tasty and...sticky. The candied pecans on the sticky bun made it even more enjoyable. The old fashioned was terrible, worst I've ever had. This is my go-to selection at any donut shop I visit. It was dry, very dense, and the glaze was minimal and not very sweet. The buttermilk chocolate was moist with a good chocolate coating on top. I didn't care much for the bland cake of the donut itself though. Prices vary depending on the donut but expect "gourmet donut" pricing. Also, if you use a card to pay, there is a fee (mine was $1.28 for using a credit card).
google avatar

Yelp
Amelia's Bakery is THE PLACE TO BE IN IDYLLWILD! They offer authentic, delicious, homemade breakfasts. The donuts were da BOMB! The service was AMAZING! I tried the sandwich. PRETTY GOOD BTW! And the STICKY BUNS? Best buns in town if you catch my drift. 5 stars Amelia. You are Leo approved!

Yelp

Yelp
The donuts here were nothing like I expected. I mean, I know what a donut tastes like. Don't we all? These weren't that. They were more like a... fried muffin in texture? That doesn't sound very appealing. But they were very good! Just not at all what I expected. Plus, they were fresh and warm. Not many pictures because I couldn't wait to eat mine.... I should note that this place is very dog friendly. A couple of other patrons had their dogs on their laps when I came in. And the woman behind the counter (the owner, I think) was very kind and friendly. My only dislike was the service fee tracked on, presumably for using a credit card.
google avatar

Paola B.

Yelp
This place is nice and cozy. Quick bites, great staff who remember you and greet you with warm hello's. Not just a donut shop or a cafe, but a place where you can go in and make a few friends as you sit and wait for your coffee. Amelia the owner is a sweetheart, you can tell how much she cares for her shop and her customers. I just had their soup of the day during rainy weather while on my lunch break, it was delicious, but what promoted me to make the review is that it was so cozy, with a sense of community, it was a good escape and break well needed from work. Her husband works making sure the meals are ready and the two just make an amazing team that over delivers to the community and tourist.

Jane C.

Yelp
Old fashioned donut is the best I've ever tried! Breakfast burritos are so good. Very cheesy, the perfect amount of cheese! Gooey cinnamon rolls. And they're open early! Best in town.
google avatar

Tamara C.

Yelp
I just swung by to get a glazed donut but WOW! That donut was spectacular! Will definitely be coming back and try other things. :)
google avatar

Logan G.

Yelp
Excellent donuts! Great people who run it, easy to talk to and makes you feel at home. They also had a great selection of breakfast burritos! The cherry on top was the cheeseburger special they have for $9 it was a delicious burger with fries and a drink! I Happily recommend!
google avatar

William K.

Yelp
Had the best apple fritter ever. Amelia makes her apple fritters with big chunk a of three different kinds of apples and has a very light glazed icing, which brings out the apple flavor. Not a lot of sugar. Thank you Amelia and Jim!
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
We really wanted to love this cute little shop - and support a local business, but I'm with the folks who found the donuts VERY oily. We tried twice. Both times, the donuts were hard and greasy. Maybe it was a case of a bad batch (bad batches?) - but the donuts were inedible. (I held back on posting this for a long time because I didn't want to hurt a small business. But knowing the owner is a fervent Trump supporter means there's an even better reason than terrible donuts for not patronizing this bakery).
google avatar

Chris D.

Yelp
Gluten free options! Amazing cinnamon rolls! Warm donuts! Crowd pleaser but be sure to get there early as some of the favorites might sell out.

Angie L.

Yelp
I was so excited to try this place after reading all the superb reviews. Unfortunately it was a miss for me, though. The Cinnamon Sugar donut had an odd, fishy note to it. I couldn't eat more than one bite. The Traditional Glazed donut was much better, but it was so oily that I couldn't take more than two bites. Definitely disappointing. But WORST of all is that because I used my credit card there was a 7.75% "electronic fee" and a 3.9% bank fee--neither of which was mentioned. I would've used cash to pay had the cashier been transparent. Only later when looking at the receipt did I notice these additional charges.
google avatar

Chris V.

Yelp
Best donuts I have ever had. They aren't the same mundane donuts you find everywhere else. Give them a try, you won't regret it.
google avatar

Erik V.

Yelp
Donuts were good but kinda pricey. We spent about $25 of donuts and 1 medium coffee, which I immediately spilled on ACCIDENT. I told the owner that because I didn't want their porch to get sticky, she proceeded to splash a cup of water on the coffee and walked away. I would've bought another coffee if the vibe wasn't stunk up by the regulars who couldn't stop staring at my partner and I. I'm not saying they owe me a coffee, but if I already spent that much money and didn't even sip my coffee, the least you can do is offer a small coffee. Even if you don't want to, it's the right thing to do. On top of everything, my partner couldn't stand the odd smell inside the shop, kinda weird.. Donuts were good, check em out if you don't mind not getting a coffee if you spill it on accident.

Chad W.

Yelp
Great people making amazing donuts and more. I don't particularly care for donuts but these donuts just looked delicious. I ordered the maple bar and apple fritter. Right away i could tell these are homemade and made with love. WOW!!! I guess i DO like donuts if they are homemade. I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Patrick F.

Yelp
Stopped by here to try the donuts. Actually, stopped the previous morning but the selection was not very good as there were only a few items Came back the next day and the selection was still minimal. Went ahead and got a maple donut with a coffee. The coffee was good and I liked it. However, the donut was oily and I was not able to finish it. I will try to get in the door really early on my next trip up to see if the selection is better and maybe try a lighter donut.
google avatar

Jenny L.

Yelp
Love this place. My new favorite local spot. I love all the puppies that walk through here. Fresh donuts churned out regularly so donuts don't sit out for too long. I really enjoyed the breakfast sandwich mcjack. Cozy couch in front as well. Owner operated business with Amelia serving you and husband hand-making the donuts on-site. They even rent out chairs for their customers for the big annual July 4th parade. Will be returning regularly.
google avatar

Kamara S.

Yelp
If you like a side of uncomfortable politics with your donuts, this is the place to go but you may be judged in the future. If your politics don't agree with them! I really wish that wasn't the case but the last time I popped in I felt like I wasn't welcome. Based on a conversation I uncomfortably had the visit before. I'm saddened by a world that doesn't allow for free commerce to just exist in that manner that is equitable- I guess Democratic dollars for Republicans are poison
google avatar

Connie V.

Yelp
We came on a family get away,.. and of course visited Amelia's donuts I can tell you this is the BEST DONUT SHOP I've ever ate at the coffee is amazing but the donuts are made with LOVE and it taste that was!!! Best place we ate at all weekend !!!
google avatar

Josh P.

Yelp
Absolute best place on the hill for donuts , great food and service. I love the grilled ham and cheese the onion rings are amazing. Owned my Amy and Jim, the food is top notch and you'll definitely be coming back again
google avatar

Jill G.

Yelp
This place always makes me happy! I'm on Keto and all I had to do was ask what she offered..she hooked me up and the food was delicious! I had a keto cheeseburger and got a keto donut to boot!!! Thank you Amy and Jim!
google avatar

Monica F.

Yelp
Donuts didn't taste good and the overall ambiance was lackluster. I've had better donuts elsewhere.
google avatar

Sara J.

Yelp
These donuts are delicious. My daughter and I have to eat gluten free. We were pleasantly surprised by not only the flavor but the texture. These are the best gluten free donuts I have had. They are the only gluten free donuts that i have had in So Cal that have a texture most similar to a non gluten donut. I told my husband that I'd be willing to make a day trip from LA to buy more.

Gloria R.

Yelp
It was an awesome experience. Amelia and her husband Jim are the Batman and Robin of doughnuts. Oh and don't forget the carrot cake muffin.......delicious
google avatar

Maureen C.

Yelp
SO worth the wait!! We absolutely love this bakery/cafe. Stopped in for a breakfast burrito, donut and cinnamon roll this morning and OMG was everything just the tastiest. I felt like we were going to someone's home to eat! Everything was freshly/made, warm and tasty. The staff is super friendly and the cafe has ambiance for days. The prices are absolutely fantastic compared to most restaurants these days so that was a really welcomed surprise. Terrific value for the cost. Wish I could've had one of everything but we will definitely be back next time we're in Idyllwild. Thank you so much for a delicious visit!

Yelp
An adorable shop with adorable owners. If you love buttermilk doughnuts, this place will make you think you've never tried them before. They have an airy crumb and crunchy exterior, not too sweet and a delicious cakey taste. Their cinnamon sugar is almost a churro doughnut, because of its crunchiness, and their strawberry tastes like strawberries. But the Maple, oh the maple glaze. There are no words to describe it. If the earl of doughnuts could have tasted this doughnut he would have known how much of a fraud he really is!! Try these doughnuts.
