10 Best Seafood Restaurants in Charleston, S.C. | Condé Nast Traveler

"There’s a melange of styles competing for your attention as you enter, the rustic charm of the exposed bricks and beams framed by Jazz Age cartoons and caricatures festooned across the walls. The most striking feature, though, is the glowing oyster shell chandeliers. Coastal-industrial with a hint of Art Deco, which may sound like too much, but it works." - Paul Oswell

The location is in the heart of Charl. The exterior and the feel when you walk in are nice. The tables are very small, and the waiters are always on their toes when two dishes arrive. I recommend not going without a reservation. Generally, the food, and of course the oysters, were good. However, the cocktails were abysmal. They were very simple, flavorless, and lacking in attention. Even though our son took some great photos, don't let them fool you. :)) The prices are quite high. I'd say it's in the middle of the price-performance ratio.

Google
Great place, awesome location and wonderful service. The shrimp were cooked perfect, tons of flavor. Oysters top notch, topsail were my favorite. If you have kids, definitely try a bite of Fry's or mac & cheese...both were delicious. The shrimp and grits was dynamite and nice sized portion. Only critic was the crab cakes a little dry, but packed with flavor.

Google
An amazing experience, even for all the great food possibilities in Charleston. Quiet enough for easy conversation. Great bar seating as well as tables/booths. The tuna tartare was the best I have ever tasted. The classic mussels were tasty and plump; that we had to enjoy as we showed up on Mussel Mondays. Crab cakes were classic Charleston. The special of the day, Tripletail, served blackened with ratatouille was moist, mouthwatering, and fulfilled my desire for a superb fish meal. A definite place for return visits. The alcoholic beverages were good, and priced appropriately. The only intermittent non “5” was for the rare quirky music played through their audio system.

Google
Great place if looking for seafood. The plates are great portions and delicious. We started with the tuna takaki and wanton chips. Very good. I got the salmon on grits with collards. My husband got the fish of the day, both amazing. The pecan old-fashioned was one of the best I've had. Very smooth. The blackberry cider was great, too. Both of the drinks I recommend. We'll I recommend everything we had. I definitely will be going back.

I last minute booked a reservation for my husband’s birthday at this place. Before this dinner i had never heard of Amens but oh my god was it the right choice. They got us into our reservation an hour early (we were happy to wait, but figured we’d would just ask), our server Danelle was AMAZING! Danelle absolutely elevated our experience at amen. She gave us plenty of suggestions, never rushed us, and was so pleasant to interact with. The food was also 10/10. We are new to eating oysters and i think we may like oysters a lot now 😂 bourbon glazed salmon is a must if you try Amens!

Google
SO GOOD!!! The food was so yummy. Highly suggest the she crab soup and the shrimp and grits. Oysters were also had by the table and were really enjoyed. The service was also great and the atmosphere was really nice. It was upscale while still being comfortable.

Google
2nd spot we visited in Charleston for oysters and they were delicious and fresh! Great spot to stop by and the cocktails were good as well! I had the spicey tequila and cucumber drink (Forgot the name) but I had a few! The salad was good as well, we got it with salmon and it had good flavor. Will be back on our next visit!

Kathryn Swaim

Google
5 star experience here. It was amazing seafood. We really enjoyed the risotto with scallops. We also enjoyed bourbon glazed salmon and the strawberry salad was very tasty. My dad ordered the swordfish and it was fresh and flavorful. Everything we had here was cooked to perfection and we had incredible service. We’ll definitely be back next time we’re in the area.

Yelp
Stopped by for late-ish lunch. Sat at bar. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Had a half dozen local oysters. Really good and I liked the sauces. They tasted homemade. Had the shrimp and grits and it was excellent. A different recipe - specifically the red sauce that was the perfect mix of smokey and spice. With the andouille and pieces of vegetables it was just delicious. The texture of the grits was just right. A very satisfying dish.

Yelp
Joined some friends for restaurant week, 3 courses for $45. Started off with some (3) delicious Virginia oysters on the half shell. They were nice a chilled with some amazing cocktail/ horseradish. Then I had a cup of she crab soup (this was an additional purchase) which was very rich and good... like she crab should be! My main course was not as good as I had anticipated. I ordered the crab stuffed flounder. It was room temp when it arrived at the table and the skin on the bottom of the flounder was very tough and hard to cut through. The serving size was very small. I would not order this again! The last course was a delicious chocolate torte. It was small but it was delicious and just enough. The service was very good and the booth seats were super comfy (bonus)!

Yelp
The presentation was good but the ratio of fish to bread seemed lacking. The service however needs attention. When asked about the sides and the server pointed to the menu and said we could read it under the selection. She did not offer suggestions and was not acknowable about the fresh catch or presentation. She did ask if we needed anything but my water glass sat empty at the edge of the table and was ignored. She did not ask if we wanted a dessert and wanted us to give up the table. I doubt I will return!

Yelp
We stopped by on a Saturday night to have a drink at the bar and an appetizer. Their raw bar sampler was a nice mix of seafood. We didn't care for the raw clams at all and the cold steamed mussels lost something without warmth. The peel n eat shrimp were nice size and the oysters were very fresh. The real star was the absolutely delicious fried oyster appetizer that came with the most amazing aioli. The oysters were fried to perfection and so tender. Definitely get some of those if you like fried oysters. We had great service at the bar.

Yelp
I stumbled on this when looking for some happy hour in the area and I am so glad I did! Their happy hour prices for wine is $6 and you can't beat $1 oysters! We also got the calamari steak slices and while it was not what I was expecting, I could have eaten two bowls of them! The sauce that they came with and the lemon over top really made this the best happy hour I've had in downtown Charleston! Make sure you sit at the bar as the bartenders are very, very nice and friendly. Since it's located on Bay St., the parking is not ideal, but if you are already walking around downtown and in the area, this is the happy hour spot for you!

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch and drinks. Hostess sat us immediately. Our server was attentive but not pushy. Had the date salad with pancetta and the catch of the day was flounder, which was seared on top. Also enjoyed a pecan old fashioned. Restaurant is larger than it appears from the street and nicely decorated. Would definitely come back.

Yelp
Many of us have gone to a restaurant and said why did it take so long for me to try this place. This is the feeling I had after dining at Amen Street Fish & Raw Bar! The place was relaxed and refined at the same time. Beautiful dark hardwood, high ceilings, Charleston brick, and amazing oyster shell chandeliers greet you as you walk in. I was nice to enjoy a place in the middle of downtown that was not the least bit touristy. Starting with cocktails my wife tried the Spicy Pepino, a Tequila, Cucumber, Jalapeño, Agave, Lime, and Triple Sec drink that packed a very nice back heat. I went with the much-touted Pecan Old Fashioned with William Wolf Pecan Bourbon, Brown Sugar Simple, Chocolate Bitters, and Angostura Bitters. It was so smooth and was like getting a warm hug on a cold winter day! One of the better ones I have tasted! For our starter we had to try the Famous Shrimp Corndogs. They were seriously delicious with a light and sweet corndog batter covering large shrimp on a stick. It was like gourmet Fair food. A sweet ketchup and spicy mustard provided the perfect dipping sauces. If you don't try these, you are missing out! For entrees my wife got the Shrimp roll with had a nice, toasted bun loaded with fresh local shrimp. I appreciated the fact the fries are included as many places are now charging for them. They were some of the best fries I have had in a while, perfectly crispy and packed with flavor. I went with the Fresh Catch Sandwich which to my joy turned out to be swordfish which was what I was hoping for! The sandwich had a nice sized filet grilled perfectly and coated with a flavorful spice combination. I really enjoyed every bite! I see a lot of people looking for a great date night option and with Carmella's right across the street this would surely fit the bill. We will definitely be going back!

Yelp
Stopped in early on a Saturday evening and we were seated right away. Service was spot on, our drinks were fantastic! The pecan old fashioned was probably one of the top drinks I've had. Food was good, but nothing really was over the top in terms of unique flavors, which is why I scored it this way.
google avatar

Cynthia L.

Yelp
The service and food were exceptional. I ordered the catch of the day which was swordfish. I also tasted my friends shrimp poboy sandwich and it was delicious the sauce and everything was really good. Everything tasted sooo fresh and was served hot. Right out of the oven or where they cooked it. We didn't go during a busy time so we didn't wait long nor had a long wait time. We didn't try dessert since we walked across the street to Carmella's. This is a very nice area to walk and have dinner. I love Charleston. We had to park along the street that is the only thing that can be tricky about the location is where to park.

Yelp
Stopped in on Halloween for a quick meal and as always a great meal! We really didn't know what we wanted so we played it safe with the seafood platters and they didn't disappoint! Great meal!

Yelp
Yum! My friend and I got a recommendation to come to Amen from our hotel for fried green tomatoes. I unfortunately couldn't eat them because I have to eat gluten free but my friend was able to try them. I got the New Bedford Sea Scallops and the scallops with risotto were amazing and fresh. They label their menu well for gluten free and are knowledgeable. Their baked oysters unfortunately have Worcestershire that has gluten so I wasn't able to try those either. The scallops with risotto were about 36 dollars which is normal for fresh scallops. The restaurant had a great ambiance at night but it does get a little loud.

Yelp
Just wow. It was a total disappointment for what began as a well-planned outing downtown for Father's Day. I could not have been more embarrassed. My dad asked for two things for FD: a carriage ride (we live here, so we last did one 20 years ago) and a fish dinner. Since my parents are in their 80s, the distance from where we parked, the barn, and where we would dine, mattered. Amen Street was selected for this reason. I've been to this venue many times before when I worked on East Bay Street. I knew Gerry and going here was always a good time with the promise of professionalism and great hospitality. Never have I experienced what I experienced during our visit. Our waitress...I am going with she was just loud and crazy, inattentive, and I swear, drinking when nobody was looking. To sum it up in one word: fiasco. I left our table twice, looking for a floor manager, hoping to get a new server or ask what the heck was going on. During one of my walkabouts seeking management, I caught another server telling her to "chill out." The hostess told me I could talk with the bartender if I wanted to, but there was no manager. What...? The food was good. Not excellent, but good. Would we go again? Honestly, never. The thing that gets me is that this restaurant caters to tourists. Folks unknowingly wander in here and very well likely end up like we ended up: paying for nonsense and not having had the opportunity to enjoy what could've been a great night due to one person's poor behavior. All I want to know is what happened to this place--my gosh.

Yelp
For starters we had an awesome server and I wish i had his name to give him a shout out, but he was attentive and knew the menu and restaurant very well. Had awesome recommendation for other local spots, and was very animated and funny and really took our dining experience to another level. Another thing I really appreciate for a seafood spot is that inside it doesn't smell like a seafood spot. And there is fresh season and oysters all over the place. My shrimp and grits were amazing and the two sides that were ordered were tasty as well. My group ordered a couple rounds of oysters and they all very much enjoyed them as well. Awesome place i think everyone should check out.

Yelp
What a wonderful choice for a meal. We are definitely happy customers. Our server was Kevin, he was a fantastic server for us. Lead us to the right choices. It's a great place and love the vibe of the place. We started with a sampler of oysters which were so good! Kevin suggested Shrimp and Grits with blackened shrimp. Oh My Gosh! He was spot on. It was delicious. The only disappointment was the Bloody Mary. It tasted fine but it was a little small for the $12 price tag. We would definitely return and would definitely want Kevin as our server again.

Yelp
Just the best scallops I have ever had. Giving this a 5 star review simply because of this dish, which sat atop the creamiest most delectable mushroom risotto. My trip to Charleston is over but I have definitely not stopped dreaming about this.

Yelp
I had a perfect lunch here whilst visiting Charleston from Los Angeles. Attractive spot, great service, incredible po'boy. This was a decade ago, but my experience here is still a great memory, and I'm pleased they're still open.

Yelp
service was top tier , food was fast and hot , mussles tasted so fresh and u can tell a difference in fresh and old seafood it was so light , salmon cooked perfectly and the grits pair so well , loved the experience a easy place to go for lunch!

Happy Hour and Oysters plus great service! Awesome combo made or afternoon complete!

Yelp
I think I just went wrong by ordering the lobster roll, so I definitely wouldn't order that again. It was extremely overcooked and dry, not worth paying $36 for at all. It needed soooooo much more butter, but really, it just needed to not be overcooked. I would not recommend ordering the lobster roll here. I also ordered a cup of the Amen Street She-Crab Soup, which was pretty good and would get it again (though the sherry is already mixed in, and the best places usually let you pour it in yourself). I also got a glass or two of the Prosecco, which was pretty good. Ambiance wise, it was pretty nice with not too many people around us. I will say I would not sit at their bar since they only have stools with no backs (I'm old and need some back support at this point in my life lol). Service was nice, though I felt like the guy stopped by a bit too much when we were just trying to talk to each other. I'll come back, but I'll try something else next time.

Yelp
Phenomenal experience for our anniversary dinner. There's not a bad thing to say about this place. The Waite staff was attentive, but very mindful of not rushing us. Loved the fact that they had varying non-alcoholic adult options on the menu. The blackened mahi-mahi may have been the best fish dish I ever had. I see why this is one of the top seafood places in Charleston. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
PREFACE: I usually give 5 star reviews because in general I'm typically very happy with most things - I'm a glass half full type of person. My husband on the other hand is rarely ever impressed - we've been together over 10 years and I can count on one hand the number of times he's called a meal delicious. So, our week long vacay in Charleston, trying as many highly recommended places that we could, proved to be a real food journey! Welcome to my series: An Optimist and A Pessimist Eat Charleston. 2nd dinner - came for the oysters! Since it was night 2 in Charleston, I was feening for some seafood! I think this would be considered a higher-end place...great looking bar, no kids menus (they did have kids options on the menu but no coloring page or anything like that). This was our first order of hushpuppies and fried green tomatoes - we would have them both again at a later time and place - little did I know how much I enjoyed both! I remember eating hushpuppies from Long John Silvers as a kid and thinking they "sucked" but not these ones! They're sweet and have that nice crispy outside and soft inside! But the fried green tomatoes, this was something I'd never had before and was blown away by! I'm a tomato person anyway so deep fry them and add some tasty pimento cheese, my tastebuds were amazed! I was also really happy with the oysters but I'm not gonna lie, I'm a total novice when it comes to them. I've never had an oyster I didn't like. Oh, and the crab cake was so yummy! My husband was totally unimpressed with everything. He said our daughter's kids burger was the best bite of food from this place. He was also really unhappy with the service. They sat us in the back room, where we waited for a long time without even being greeted. The waitress did apologize when she got to our table but proceeded to still be MIA for most of the meal. We felt like an afterthought which always stings a little more at such a pricey spot.
google avatar

Julie H.

Yelp
I can always depend on delicious food, great service, and cozy atmosphere when I dine here! Today's appetizer - the fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese were so delicious and I could eat a bucket of the pickles okra that comes with it. I had an enormous swordfish sandwich with fries and my husband had the fish tacos. All plates were clean in minutes! I appreciate the non-alcoholic cocktail and beer choices here. And the lemon cake for dessert was divine!
google avatar

Victoria B.

Yelp
Great nautical/coastal vibes, lots of wood everywhere and feels cozy. Food was great, shrimp corn dogs were a hit and scallops a la plancha with that risotto was chefs kiss! The oysters were yummy and fresh. Service was super slow - our oysters came out over an hour after we ordered them. Not sure why.

Todd H.

Yelp
Had never been here in my many visits to Charleston. One of the well known fish places in town, just had visited other places ( big Hank's fan). I would recommend Amen to there as we had a good meal and the service was good. We were stuck in the front corner so ambiance was so-so. However it was quieter than the rest of the restaurant so we could actually talk which was great. Every dish was good. Nothing blew us away, but very solid. Lots of competition in town but Amen is a place to hit.
google avatar

Steve M.

Yelp
The seafood is good and fresh.Great happy hour fantastic drinks.Great service and the restaurant is clean.

Yelp
Fabulous oyster and Fish restaurant! We tried every type of oyster that they had. I had a half dozen of the 6 types of raw oysters they were serving. Oysters with horseradish cocktail sauce and mignon sauce. Excellent selection of tasty oysters. Next week baked oysters Rockefeller. This was delicious, warm and cheesy with the usual spinach. Lastly we had the fried oysters. Originally, I was disappointed that they didn't have a Poboy however we decided that this was better because we didn't have the bread getting in the way of the tasty tender oysters. we also had the she crab soup, which was both delicate and rich, and topped off with sherry . The weight staff was attentive and helpful at making recommendations . We also had yummy drinks the owners frozen peach Bellini , tapped off with dark rum and a delicious South Carolina IPA: Edmund's.... We would definitely come again. The ambience was Beautiful with cool prints , brick walls, and cool oyster chandelier lighting .

Yelp
Excellent food incredible service; short wait; great time. Was looking for a place with seafood and this was definitely a hit!
google avatar

Meghann B.

Yelp
We came in and sat at the bar for Happy Hour, the oysters and mussels were delicious and so were the drinks! I wish the bartenders were a little more friendly, but we did get some great recommendations from them on where to go out late night!

Yelp
Best find in Charleston! The food, service and ambiance were spot on. No one in our group was unhappy with Amen. Highly recommend going when you are in the area.

Yelp
A must stop when visiting Charleston! We've been going here since 2015! Our must order is the fried calamari every time - it comes with bacon and corn and is so tender! We also love getting oyster shots here, always fresh and delicious!
google avatar

Lin C.

Yelp
Happy hour 3-6 is wonderful. Friendly staff. Calamari steak picture. Just go and order this. It is literally a meal and delicious. I don't read long reviews do you?
google avatar

H M.

Yelp
Service was very good. We ordered muscles as an appetizer. That was disappointing as muscles were overcooked and microscopic, but the tomato base was quite good. Having said that, we ordered Caesar salads one with salmon and the second with catch of the day (tripletail). Fish was perfectly spiced and grilled.
google avatar

Amanda V.

Yelp
Dude. The food was fantastic. The ambiance: gorgeous. The service? Wild. It's so crazy to have your server visit the table next to you, with her back to you, and not check on you. I had to wave my hands around like a crazy person to get a refill. When I did that, she brought the check. Honestly, I would come back if I thought I'd be treated properly. My husband and I had reservations to celebrate our 16th anniversary. I don't know that the table next to us did to deserve 5 star service and us to get the old shoulder but... noted. There are plenty of raw bars in Charleston.

Yelp
Amen (& Hallelujah)! While in Charleston for a girls weekend we decided that Amen Street fish would be our first stop. We arrived at 5:30pm with hopes of trying their happy hour but it's only at the bar and there weren't enough seats for us. We were seated at a front table in a tight corner which wasn't my favorite place to sit because I felt we didn't get a chance to see the ambiance of the restaurant. Additionally I don't like sitting next to high traffic areas like the hostess stand or kitchen. We met our friendly server Ashley who offered us some suggestions and insights on the menu. We started with the hush puppies, peach salad, and fried green tomatoes. After we loaded our plates and took those first bites we immediately knew why this place is called Amen. We all let out a satisfied "oh my gosh". When we thought it couldn't get any better our entrees came out. The shrimp & grits, salmon and jerk halibut. I got to sample the shrimp & grits and immediately wanted to make plans to come back. My jerk halibut was honestly perfect I swapped spinach for collard greens and I'm being happy I made that request. Everything was bursting with flavors that also got verbal nods and exclamations of satisfaction. I tried to eat every single morsel but couldn't finish all of the coconut rice. We didn't save room for dessert but if I'm ever back in Charleston I'll definitely make a second stop here. I recommend making a reservation there was a pretty long line when we left at 7:30pm.
google avatar

William H.

Yelp
This is one of our go to restaurants in Charleston. Great place for oysters. Always a great variety. We had the tuna tartar, oysters, tile file and scallops. All were great! Good service. Noise level is the only negative. It is loud at time. Otherwise everything met expectations again.
google avatar

Angie L.

Yelp
Good place for lunch which is what I had. Picked this place based on the reviews of the Lobster Roll. I was a bit disappointed to find that they discontinued it, however, maybe it just wasn't as good as the reviews ...I am in the south and lobster isn't usually their thing, but given I saw The Black Dog here, I thought I'd give it a try. I digress...I ended up with the She Crab Soup and the Arugula Peach Salad with Fried Oysters. Both were very good and the salad , as described by the server was "refreshing ". I would recommend both. The service was good, nothing spectacular but good. Food was above average for flavor and quality. I recommend , Amen

Yelp
By far my favorite restaurant in Charleston! Amen Street is a Charleston classic with fresh oysters and delicious seafood all around. My staples there are the crispy calamari (the best calamari I have had in my life), the she crab soup (the best in Charleston), and the oysters of course. The ambience is fresh and top notch. Service is always good considering how busy they get! Pro tip is to go for happy hour and sit at the bar for great deals.

Madeline Y.

Yelp
We LOVED this experience. We came in the middle of the afternoon on a hot day for the cold sampler platter, a frozen beverage, and a beer. The platter was supposed to have clams, but our waiter doubled the oysters since it wasn't a great season for clams. We also ordered the hush puppies, just in case. ;) All of it was wonderful. Service was excellent. It was simple and straightforward, but definitely an experience we'll remember well.

Yelp
This place was delicious! Had the scallops and risotto.... Both were really tasty. Our waitress was awesome and the food came out quickly.

Yelp
Driving from Port Canaveral, we decided to stop in Charleston for dinner. Who knew Charleston on Sunday night would be packed?? We were able to get a table for four at Amen Street Fish & Raw Bar. My wife isn't a raw shellfish person so we had to appease her palette as well. Walking inside, it's a beautiful space. The long bar with the oyster showcase was a nice touch. While waiting for our table, it was nice to see an offering of rotating seasonal and local draft beers. I chose a pint of a local beer, very good! Once we're seated, we ordered mussels and Amen Street's Famous Shrimp Corndogs. Four shrimps dipped in corn meal and is served with lemon pepper ketchup along with carolina spicy mustard. Deelish! *Pro tip: Order the sauces on the side Mrs Bill S also liked the Mussels sautéed in white wine. We also ordered the Hushpuppies with a side of local wild flower honey and when in the south Fried Green Tomatoes are a must! A side of pimento cheese was a great addition to this side. I'm feeling pretty packed at this point so we ordered the Seafood Tower for all of us to share. Mrs Bill S had some of the peel & eat shrimp. The mussels, raw oysters and clams were all low country, South Carolina goodness. The Tuna Tartare was my personal favorite. We had the best meal during our short stay in Charleston. Can I get an Amen?

Yelp
Excellent selection of fish and seafood love the atmosphere and service! Front window seat fast service for a busy night! Drinks kept full, timely delivery of food even for a full house! Absolutely love everything here! Enjoyed the drinks and food so very much! In town on business and much needed dinner with friends! Definitely recommend this restaurant and cannot wait to come back!
google avatar

Sonia C.

Yelp
Amen's service was attentive to the customers. Our server took our order quickly and was courteous. The Holy Basil drink was very good and refreshing. If you enjoy baked oysters, you must them at Amens.
google avatar

Kyle D.

Yelp
Overall: Amen Street exceeded our expectations and is a great choice! The good: The food is fantastic! My wife and I never pass up calamari steak slices (they have more oomph than the usual fried calamari you find on menus), and we were not disappointed. The shrimp corn dogs were a fun and unique appetizer and were delicious as well. The shrimp and grits has bold flavors, is high quality, and filling. Service was friendly and helpful throughout, they have plenty of drink options, and also lots of seating. The not-so-good: Prices are a little high, but it's almost a given for the area that you're in. Food/drink: 9.5/10 Atmosphere: 9/10 Service: 9/10

Lauren G.

Yelp
Had our favorite meal of our 5 day trip here and the BEST service too!! We loved our experience so much we contemplated eating there 2 nights in a row :) The scallops dinner had huge perfectly cooked scallops with the best risotto I've ever had. My husband got the special - crab stuffed flounder. Also outstanding. Also loved the shrimp corn dogs. Our server Michael was extraordinary and a wealth of knowledge and hospitality.

Dwight E.

Yelp
Decent place. Super friendly staff. Imaginative menu and fair prices. Next time I'm in Charleston I'll definitely be back. The food was super tasty. Very fair prices. Ambiance was great too!

Yelp
Amen's hostess, Cody, was the best. She recommended I try the crab cakes and the nightly special, the jerk halibut, and was right. I highly recommend!
