There’s a Speakeasy Hiding In Franklin’s Mellow Mushroom | Eater Nashville

"To find Franklin’s newest bar I had to walk past the crowds toward the historic Williamson County Chancery Court Clerk house and slip behind Mellow Mushroom’s patio into a back alley, where a gray electrical box hides a “Frankenstein switch”—pull it and a green light alerts staff to let you in. Inside, the space feels like a Prohibition-era speakeasy with a back lounge furnished with tables made from red boxelder trees and wooden pews from the Grand Ole Opry, a stamped tin roof, vintage mirrors from a Nashville consignment shop, framed black-and-white photos of Franklin and Nashville during Prohibition, and a large wooden island repurposed from a 200-year-old Amish barn. The cocktail program, led by bar manager Hunter Thammavongsa, features 17 twists on classic cocktails—take the Volstead (a riff on the Old-Fashioned using four different rums, rye, sherry, housemade coconut bitters, and mole bitters) or the Impassioned Sanctuary (with lemongrass, lychee, and jasmine tea), reflecting Thammavongsa’s effort to honor Southeast Asian herbs and ingredients and to introduce people to cocktails so the culture survives; he wants the drinks to be memory makers. The menu of unfussy small plates leans into comfort food—four different kinds of sliders (classic, hot chicken, beef barbecue, fried chicken and ranch), gouda mac and cheese bites, and a cheese and charcuterie board—and even features a bourbon pecan pie from neighboring Merridee’s that can only be found here and one other Nashville location. I appreciated that they offer a Locker Club membership (the $50 monthly is sold out, but a limited $300/month VIP remains) that includes a locker for up to three bottles, an Amendment XVIII app for immediate door access, reservations for up to two people three hours in advance, and free admission to monthly tastings; the bar’s later hours also help fill a gap in Downtown Franklin’s scene and bring in guests from nearby restaurants." - Jackie Gutierrez-Jones

I’m now a regular! I love, love the speakeasy vibe. The drinks are fabulous, the bartenders are talented and the management and team are very observant and quick to protect their patrons from unwanted attention. I always recommend them to customers. Tyler is my #1 bartender followed closely by Dave.

This is such a cool hidden gem. This place really takes you back in time. The cocktails are made with in-house syrups and bitters made fresh daily. The variety of cocktails and drink options were great. Highly recommend for a special occasion or just a Tuesday night out.

We had been wanting to visit Amendment XVIII as we love speakeasies and noticed that it was close to where we live. The best way of locating it is finding the rear entrance for mellow mushroom and there is a parking garage conveniently located to it. In order to enter, you need to flip the Frankenstein switch which is next to their door alerting them and turning on a green light. We went late Friday night and were surprised that it was fairly empty and that there was no wait time. We were immediately assisted and asked if we had any questions regarding the menu as it was our first time. After a few minutes, we decided on our drinks and asked if it was possible to make a small modification to them by removing the egg whites due to both dietary/preference needs. We 100% understand that this can modify the original drink intended and we understood the consequences by doing so. It wouldn't be the first time we ask to have this removed and have always enjoyed our drinks. The waitress had to make sure but then the bartender came to our table and seemed very territorial about the drinks. Explaining that it would modify the drink and we repeatedly told him that we understood. Despite this, he continued to try convincing us to get something else and we ended up ordering something different than what we wanted to avoid the discussion. For this reason, we are giving 4 stars instead of 5. We will be coming back as we enjoyed the ambiance but hope to be able to try something that we actually wanted.

I had delicious food. A wonderful welcome, especially finding the "key" in. The manager i met was delightful. The bar experience could use some work. While the cocktail menu looks exceptional the bartender I had was mediocre at best. I am hoping my next experience the manager and welcoming hospitality i saw previously will extend to the rest of the staff.

Downtown Franklin needed a speakeasy, and this place fits the bill. Highly recommend, really good drinks and good customer service. Only been here once so far, but definitely plan to come back. My friends and I all had positive experiences with our drinks, although not every drink is worth five stars, but on the whole good vibes.

Last night my husband and I went there for our second time and once again it was a wonderful experience. We ordered the Buffalo dip as well as the meatballs. Both excellent. The underground vibe is relaxing and easy. The service both times has been top notch and it seems these days good service can be hard to find. I highly suggest this hidden gem.

Phenomenal atmosphere! The team here is friendly, genuine and highly talented! Very creative with their drink offerings. They made a few “custom” drinks that far exceeded expectations! All they needed was a flavor profile and a few moments later, a delicious and refreshing cocktail was slid in front of us! Definitely swing by and give this spot a try! A sensational experience!

The older man hostess at the front door was extremely rude. When I told him our group has never been there before and would like to peek my head around the corner to see what was inside before we wanted to sign up on the waitlist to even see what we would be waiting for and instead of taking someone else’s spot in line we wanted to make sure our group was interested in going. The man replies back “ I’m sorry we are too busy for you to peek ur head around the corner” I replied “ just for me to peak my head around the corner ?” Obviously they weren’t that busy if he had the time to turn around and say that. He said yall can sign up on the waitlist and no of course we aren’t signing up on the waitlist. We don’t even know what’s inside if we want to wait. He was extremely rude and our group left and will not return. Service 0/10 very rude and not happy our group was disappointed!!!

Yelp
The vibe is amazing! Decor is on point! The staff is friendly & fantastic! Food is fabulous! Then there's the drinks,,, y'all earned the 5 stars!! If you can't find it ask around cuz it's the newest hot spot in town! Pull the switch on the green light & don't worry about the wait,,, it's worth it. *Hint: if the wait is over 15 minutes then go to the Mellow Mushroom bar & pregame there

Yelp
Come for great Drinks! Cocktails are GREAT, Staff Great, Environment Great... FOOD IS ABYSMAL. Soggy over battered cauliflower, rock hard sliders (chicken and beef, super cheap tasting meat), Charcuterie tray was sliced orange cheese and deli bologna with sweet pickels. Awful. However, it's right next to Mellow Mushroom so if you're hungry, order a pizza. I really DO RECOMMEND this spot for a nice night out, lots of upscale, interesting, beautiful (and delicious) cocktails. **If you own this place, please, for the love of God, spend some $ on good quality food or just partner w MM. Drunk people will order ALMOST anything. Sweet Potato Fries and sauces? Air Fryer Salmon and butter lettuce salad? Can your mother make a casserole??? There must be a solution...

Yelp
A cocktail bar with pretty good drinks. The service and attitude of the staff was not not good. You would think for a cocktail bar they would be happy and engaging. Won't go back.
