We went on the Queen City Ultimate Underground Tour. About half of the tour is above ground telling the most interesting stories of the area and how the city grew. Including some of its dark history that had been forgotten for many years and then unearthed - literally - when building an underground parking garage in a downtown city park. They found out the park had been a grave yard that only MOST of the bodies had been removed from. It's a crazy story you will definitely want to hear for yourself if you are ever in the area.
We visited a beautiful church and its crypt. The crypt floor was "tiled" with tombstones. The whole thing had the feel of an illuminati escapaded. Especially, when we accidentally got locked in the church. Our tour guide kept applogizing but seriously! How cool is that! Tours with a little upheaval are the best, especially when the adventure is unplanned and no one was hurt.
We explored several of the underground tunnels left vacant and forgotten after they stopped using them to brew beer, in favor of modern technologies.
Going down in the tunnels was super interesting and a little sketchy (which was part of the adventure and made it so fun). The "stairs" down, which is actually more like a ladder because they are steep, have their own crazy story which starts with a group of friends drinking and jackhammering a hole in a basement.
Needless to say, the tour was a huge highlight of our trip and made me feel like Indiana Jones (at least a tiny bit).
I saved the best for last. Our tour guide, Jordan, was AMAZING!!!! And deserves every single one of those exclamation points. You could tell he loved what he was doing and was super fascinated by the things he shared. He didn't just share facts, he shared stories and adventures from the past. It was like an old friend chatting with you, not a tour guide droning on. Jordan is the MVP of tour guides.
