The 38 Essential Osaka Restaurants

"American is a particularly gaudy example of a jun kissa, an endangered style of old-school coffee shop. The kitschy, mid-century decor and thick, rich pancakes draw dedicated regulars and tourists. Other classics, like the fruit sandwich and coffee jelly, have all but disappeared in modern Japan, but still feature proudly on the menu of this postwar relic." - La Carmina, Michael Sosnick

Feels like an old rich cafe- the kind maybe from the 1960s or 1970s. The seats are very low adding to the ambiance that you are supposed to hang out with friends here and relax. The food was a little expensive compared to the items and portion sizes. We were craving shaved ice but most of it had very little flavor and my little vanilla cake they called “mont blanc” was also pretty bland.

Super retro Japanese style “Kissa-ten (cafeteria). Great antique designs, coffee and traditional “hot cake (pancakes) is simple and the best. Reasonable and nice place to rest and refresh.

Very cute cafe with a very old fashioned American style vibe. They have a large selection of cakes, parfaits, drinks and some savory options as well. The waitresses even wear traditional outfits!

Delightful cafe to stop and take a break in. They have an amazing assortment of desserts & drinks. During out visit we ordered the... 'Bear Cake' 🐻🍰 'Fruits A La Mode' 🍉🥝 'Watermelon Frappe' 🍉🍧 all the items were delicious and very cute! This cafe is definitely worth a stopping at when visiting.

I was excited to try a showa style kissaten. But the coffee tasted really stale, like it was left in the pot for a while. Quite undrinkable honestly, and for a price of 570 yen...it's was so bad. The whole shop seems to be relying on it's nostalgia for business. It's a cool vibe but there are a lot of other showa style shops for the same price that actually taste good. As long you get anything that doesn't require any actual skill to make i guess it's ok.

Food was good. I really enjoyed the pancakes, they were a bit crispy on the outside and very fluffy on the inside.

Tourist trap literally, food was bad. Egg sandwich was dry no sauce nothing. We requested ketchup and mayo for that reason and they even requested extra money for sauce.

First of all this isn’t the best place for tourist. And isn’t meant for tourists either. I find japanese people are very nostalgic. Every detail of this restaurant reminds me of Showa era. The taste, the decorations, the uniforms and even the old lady at cashier (not very friendly but very Osaka lol) So if you are looking for something « modern », you will be disappointed. But if you like to see how Japanese cafe looked like in Showa era, I would definitely recommend this place.
