16 Best Old Fashioned Cocktails to Drink in NYC | Eater

"You pretty much know what you’re getting into with a name like American Whiskey, and there aren’t many surprises here — wall-mounted bison and deer heads excluded. The wood-paneled interior is warm and cozy and the whiskey list is almost as long as the bar, with several tasting flights on offer. The cocktail menu consists of more creative drinks, like the cocktail special Strike Me Dead: an Old Fashioned variation with Elijah Craig Small Batch bourbon, with vanilla, pink peppercorn syrup, pecan bitters (which take two months to make in house). Then again, you also won’t go wrong with a classic Old Fashioned, made with Elijah Craig Small Batch bourbon, angostura bitters, and simple syrup, chilled over big rock ice cube and garnished with a lemon and orange peel. Snacks like smoked wings and fried cheddar cheese curds are the perfect complement to the booze." - Vox Creative

I came here before the Brandy & Monica concert. Really nice atmosphere. They were even playing Brandy & Monica, which was fun. I sat at the bar and my bartender was super sweet. I do have to say though, that she didn’t make the best drink. I ordered the cold fashion. It’s made with cold brew, and this was the sweetest old fashion ever. It wasn’t balanced at all, and I barely tasted the whiskey. It also comes in a very small, uneventful glass, and for the price I was charged ($15+20% gratuity, bringing the total to $20), I’d expect a mixologist-esque cocktail. This drink was poorly made directly into the glass. No sort of mixing or shaking at all, and it tasted as such. I kept the tab open, hoping it’d be a good enough drink for me to want to order another one, but I was good after that drink. Also, the menus were sticky and dirty. I wouldn’t recommend, unfortunately, mostly because of the drinks being so pricey, yet so lackluster. I don’t mind tipping 20% because I know the bartenders work hard, but the drinks need to be good.

Everybody likes to trash this place but honestly couldn’t ask for more when you’re going here before a devils game or concert at prudential center. I’m not sure what people expect out of a bar/restaurant that is right next door to a stadium/arena that is of course going to be packed right before an event. The food and drinks come out super quick IF YOU GET A TABLE, especially considering how packed the place is. We were seated immediately (40 minutes before puck drop). The pizza came out in like 60 seconds, not sure how the waiter even maneuvered back and worth to the kitchen through all of those people that quick. Pizza had great flavor and came out hot. Chicken tenders and fries were kind of lacking, tiny little fries like it was the end of the bag or something and only three chicken tenders on the small side. I understand it’s the location but for the price I would like less fries and maybe one or two more chicken tenders. Pretzels were awesome but the nachos were just alright. Still would 100% recommend if your hungry or looking to pregame before an my event at prudential center.

What a bad experience. We started by ordering 5 old fashions and we all had the same reaction when tasting them. They took them back and 20 minutes later they brought us new ones. Better but not great. The food experience was worse. One side of the table got their meals and about 15 minutes later the other side got theirs. Then a short time later we got our appetizers. The food was horrible. My burger was like a hockey puck. Nobody enjoyed their meals. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. I will say the waiter was very good and tried to rectify things but it was out of his control.

Google
walked in with a friend before the three days grace/breaking benjamin concert. we got sat down pretty quickly and there were some open seats around. we both got something quick to eat and got the tenders and fries. im sorry but the tenders were small, like from a school cafeteria. I notice one of my tenders was much smaller than one of my friend's, so they count them rather than doing portions. we got a lot of fries though. and we got charged $3 for a bottle of water. sucks no one told us beforehand, but definitely much more expensive inside the concert venue. they did have an outside bar set up outside and people were chilling which I thought was nice. anyone driving in, I recommend using spothero to find parking. It was an extra block or two further than the venue parking but it saved me about $10-$20.

Google
My buddy and I picked this place because it was next door to Prudential Center. The place was packed, and there was a wait to be seated. Our host and server were fantastic. As busy as they were, they were pleasant and fast. I ordered a Margherita Pizza. It looked burnt but wasn't. It was a well tasting charred pie. More sauce than cheese is always a plus for me. I would love to come here when it's not so busy. FYI- what we didn't notice was that the establishment adds a 20% gratuity to the bill. We missed this, and our server was double tipped.

8/2/24 Stopped in because we were early for Prudential Center event and someone in our party wanted a drink. We sat at the bar and ordered drinks and Calamari. Calamari were good, crispy outside and tender inside. The marinara was good, wished we had more lol Service was good, our bartender had a smile and very accommodating.

Google
I was staying locally for an event at the Prudential center and ended up spending quite a bit of time here. The service food and atmosphere was awesome. Pizza is great, really recommend the meatballs, the chicken sandwich was also great. Had a nice cold forged stout that was super creamy. Highly recommend

Google
This restaurant was the most friendly, hospitable place we have visited in Newark. The food was excellent and prompt. Service was top notch and they made accommodations for the dog as well. Will recommend it to anyone visiting the Prudential center!

Yelp
This place was surprisingly good in terms of beer selection. The bartender knows his stuff and even recommended some good beer. I've seen this place super lively right before an event and it's way cheaper than the drinks and food at Prudential so I great place to pregame. They sometimes close the road between Prudential and this restaurant which makes it a real tailgating experience. No happy hours during event nights at Prudential so keep that in mind.

Yelp
Came here with a friend the other night before a concert and wasn't too impressed. For starters, The inside is pretty big which is great but it could definitely use some better air conditioning. Food came out quick- we ordered the appetizer sampler with a side order of fries, and my friend and I both thought the size of the sampler was so small. The empanadas-were very good but the rest of the order left little to be desired. There were a ton of fries in our side fry order, and we saw a man next to us get tater tots and they look really good. For cocktails I ordered a dirty martini which was OK and my friend ordered some tequila drink which I thought was good but unfortunately noticed a fly in it half way through so she decided not to finish it. We get it accidents happen but the entire experience here was just bleh Our server was nice but outside of that, this place should prob just be used to grab a surfside to go and maybe a shot. There are other places in the area to eat and drink it but this place was very convenient since it was right next to the venue.

Yelp
This is really a 4.5 - see below! I've been in twice - once in the pandemic years and just tonight, both after concerts at Prudential. Tonight especially, they stayed open after a show for a few hours past their usual close specifically for the folks attending the show. Overall, I think the bar is great, especially considering that unless you plan something in the city, there are very few options for any sort of post event hangout. The drinks are decent and prices are reasonable for the area, the servers work their butts off even when 100 people arrive at the same time - they may be slow in the rush, but that's completely expected and they stay upbeat, are flexible with who you order from, and vibe well with the crowd. Tonight they even let one of the concert-goers DJ, so our EXTREMELY huge (no less than 75 ppl, probably more) group was hype the whole time and it was one of the best post-concert hangs I've ever enjoyed. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because honestly the food is pretty average. It's absolutely the only thing to shrug about. Otherwise, if they're open and you're waiting for a show or not quite ready to go home after one, it's an excellent option.

Yelp
This is the best pregame spot for a good meal before the Devils hockey game. Located right across the street from the doors of Prudential center it is the perfect location to eat before you're going to an event. The place is always packed. Go 2 to 3 hours before the doors open to get a table and have time to sit and eat. The food came out fast and was really good. Staff is great and efficient. Prices are also very reasonable. Bring cash to avoid the credit cars fee! I cant wait to get back here before a game.

Yelp
We were attending a conference at the arena and came here because we thought it would be quick. We were welcomed when we walked in and sat at one of the high tops near the bar. At first, it wasn't so busy, but the others attending the conference had the same idea we had. Our waitress came fairly quickly and took our drink orders, and that's when the speed ended. We perused the menu and decided what we wanted. And waited. And waited. Finally, she came over with our drinks and we grabbed her so we could order before they got overwhelmed. I ordered the Smoked Wings and a Cheeseburger. I tasted my beer and it was sour- that sour milk taste when the taps aren't cleaned. We grabbed her as she walked by again and she took my beer and I ordered another. That came fairly quickly, and thankfully, tasted great. Then time stood still. We didn't see our waitress for some time, we both finished our first drink, and looked for our waitress to order another one. No sighting. My friend got up to go to the bar to order another drink when she finally appeared- and asked us if we needed another drink. We said yes, and mentioned we still hadn't received our food. She got our drinks and then finally, our food arrived. While I was expecting to get my wings as an appetizer, they came with the burger. Okay, the food matched the service- mediocre at best. The wings didn't taste smoked and you could tell they were microwaved. The burger was mediocre as well, lacking flavor. We finished our food and beers and got out of there. I can only imagine what it's like before/after a hockey game. Maybe it was a bad night, but I wasn't impressed.

Yelp
Went to American Whiskey for some pre game drinks and snacks. When the waitress figured out we weren't in for dinner she did everything but ask us to leave to get us to free up the table. Poor experience - don't go here. ps the food we had was awful. Nachos aren't supposed to be cold!

Yelp
The pace is ok for the bar but when it comes to the food it is subpar. Let's start with the chicken fingers. 15.99 for three processed chicken fingers. You would only see this type of food at a fast food place. Their pizzas are ok. Again, they use low quality cheese. You can tell by the greasiness of the cheese. It you looking for fast food with a bar then this place would be your spot. I recommend nearby restaurants.

Yelp
Solid sports bar. Normally bars next to arenas are absolute tourist traps, so I was pleasantly surprised with American Whiskey. We came to the Prudential Center to watch some college basketball, and we hung around here for a couple hours before the game. Maybe twenty or so beers on draft. Mostly macros but there were a few local offerings which were all sessionable lagers. Beer selection was mostly in line with the typical arena beer crowd scene. The whiskey offering was excellent. Lots of great picks that were off menu. Great variety including bourbon, scotch, Irish, Japanese, and some locals too. The bar was super busy, so I didn't run the staff through the rigamarole of pricing out various pours; however, I'd definitely be included to return at an off peak time for the whiskey If I'm in the neighborhood. Food was solid too. We shared a margarita pie. It was a large, personal sized by which worked well for two to share. I suppose one hungry person could probably finish it. It was a Brooklyn style pie. Super thin and crispy. Some char coming through from the fired oven. Service at the counter was good for me. The bar ended up getting super crowded so some folks had to wait a bit. Lots of TVs throughout. Gratuity was automatically included even for just the two of us at the bar.

Yelp
Been here a handful of times because my husband and I love going to the Devils games across the street at the Prudential Center. However, my husband had a Miller Lite on tap and he says it "tasted dirty". I've had other beers on tap and cannot relate, but I usually drink IPAs or drink mixed drinks. Take that as you will. However, the main star of the show has to be the adorable Pitbull outside, who is probably the most obedient of its kind I have ever seen. Her owner was one one of the guys setting up the outside area and working the DJ system. There was a moment she went on the street, and although I hesitated to call her over on the curb, her owner said "get on the sidewalk", and she obeyed instantly. What a wonderful and well trained dog. I'd come back just to visit her!

Yelp
A just ok place if you want to grab something before an event at the Prudential Center. Surely couldn't be more convenient. Place was very crowded and had good energy from fellow fans. But almost too crowded. The main dining room tables were so close that you can barely move. They tried to put us at a folding table with folding chairs on top of the kitchen doors but we declined and went to the bar. Good beer selection but my draft wasn't all too fresh. But glad I at least got a glass as they started to use plastic cups. Pricey yet skimpy mixed appetizer platter was right from the freezer to the fryer. Our appetizer plates were paper. And the cheapest paper ever I might add. Burgers were fine but on the small side so couldn't be cooked to the requested temperature. Service was fine. Bartender was neither friendly nor unfriendly.

Yelp
Great spot for drinks after any event at the Prudential Center. The manager and table servers provided good service. However, the bartender working today (May 20th at 2:00 PM) was unpleasant and rude, displaying behavior that was far from customer-friendly for no apparent reason. Perhaps he's going through something personal--if so, I hope he gets the support he needs and also receives proper customer service training.

Yelp
A group of us went here before a hockey game. It has a good location being right across the street from the arena. They directed us to go upstairs where we were able to find a table. Def busy for game night. They even had it on the big screen. Where things took a turn was we placed our order and it was busy so we expected it would be a while, but after about 30 mins and we still had dent gotten our drink order we figured something was wrong. Also our server or any server never came back to us to check on us. We had to go to them and find out what had happened. They lost our order and by this time we needed to go to the game. They did offer to make us pizzas but we had to go, but the fact that no one came to check on us not really feeling that.

Yelp
Nice place to grab a beer before the Devils game. Service was fast but staff could've been friendlier and less creepy.

Yelp
We wanted to find dinner before a Seton Hall basketball game and this place was picked for its convenience. The service was good and we were given a table instantly. Our waitress was available and helpful. If you're looking for a great eating establishment - this probably isn't your place. If you're looking for a place to get a good variety of drinks - that's a different story. The menu doesn't have a ton of variety but has some solid options. I ordered fish and chips and they were OK. I'd probably come here again but wouldn't do it unless I was going to an event at the Prudential Center.

Ryan L.

Yelp
Went there after a devils game, and sat at a hightop table with my buddy. Waitress came over immediately, which was nice, but she basically told us what to order "Sounds like you need wings, what flavor?" and then the same thing with whiskey (proceeded to give us expensive whiskey which we didn't ask for and she clearly knew we wouldn't know the price). Made us pay immediately which is weird because god forbid we wanted to get entres. We had wings which were hot so we asked for water which took about 20 minutes to come while our mouths are on fire. When they finally come, it's two BOTTLES of water which she made us pay $8 for and then tip her again. What kind of restaurant doesn't have tap water? We were pissed and spent way too much for 6 wings and unnecessarily expensive whiskey. Used to be a fan of this place and that night ruined it for us.

Maxine J.

Yelp
Horrible service. Came before the Mary j and Neyo concert and got here early. Ordered drinks and apps. Our drinks were places on the table with the waiter saying "I'm not sure which beer is which" We tried to order pizza where he said something was wrong with the oven. When we saw other tables getting the pizza. we waited a while for the waiter for each order we made. We got forced to pay a 20% gratuity or else he would have barely got 10%. Do not recommend.

Sarah A.

Yelp
This bar has the potential to be great, but sadly I had a terrible experience. Came before a concert and arrived at 5:25 pm. It was almost empty and we did not get a server to come over for 20 minutes. Then it got extremely crowded and it took an HOUR to get a salad and 2 burgers. There was 1 server working. When we complained to the manager, another server started but people who came in after us were getting service and their food right away. The couple next to us got there before us and did not receive their food at all. It was ridiculous. Also, the waiter did not understand the drinks I was trying to order (a blue hawaiin and a dirty Tito's martini) so I had to send them back 3 times. Once my drink did come, my martini was served in a plastic cup. I have never had an experience like this before. I asked the manager for a free shot to make up for our experience, which he gave us. Once the food finally came it was pretty good, which is why I'm giving them 2 stars instead of 1. Good pre-show venue because of the location, and the music and vibe was fun, but they need to get it together before I return and give them my money again.

Yelp
Chill bar in the heart of Newark, it's right by the Prudential and Loft Life venue. My husband and I walked here from the Marriott Hotel. It was a short walk. The bar had only a handful of people in there. Our waitress was attentive. I ordered a margarita and my husband had a glass of whiskey. There was some live music going festival thing going on around the corner you could hear and some of the other patrons were either coming from there or going. We had a United voucher due to us being in Newark because of a delayed flight. The waitress at first didn't know how to accept it but her boss was able to use that form of payment with no problem. I would come back here whenever I'm in town for a drink and relaxed vibe.

Yelp
i had the basil maple and mixed green salad. the dressing was very good. i was surprised. next time i have to ask for no onions. i forgot :(. this place gets super packed during devil games as always. i hate it actually. i feel like they staff is wayyyyyy under staffed! they need tons of waiters walking around besides having one person monitor an area. especially if you wanna leave quickly and get the check and you have to wait. i was in the corner by the bar and its hard being over there with tons of people around. honestly this place makes bank every game. just pay your fucking staff to be there! why make people wait 20 mins to get the check???? their food is very good but be aware of devil games and concerts.
google avatar

Sahnyjah P.

Yelp
I understand you want concert goers to pay for your terrible food before they can use the bathroom but if I sent my bf in for food and I show you the receipt and you're still giving me a hard time to get in, you'd just an A-hole. And the food is subpar at best.

Yelp
Be careful when visiting this establishment. Bar..... 20% gratuity added in when I bought two beers which I wasn't aware of. I also tipped the bartender who never said the gratuity was included. Table-........ service was slow, food was ok. Had to ask our waitress 3 times for the check. When I got my change I was shorted $4.

Yelp
I feel like it is so random that this place had awesome pizza. I love a sweet sauce and this pizza dough was PERFECT. 10/10.

Heather M.

Yelp
The food was excellent, the service was not. We went in around 3:00 for an early dinner before a Devils game. We were seated right away and got our food in a decent amount of time. After that, though, the waitress kept disappearing and finally I had to ask another employee to get our check. When that finally came, it wasn't until my husband filled it out that he noticed that a 20% tip was automatically added to the bill and the tip he left was an "additional tip.". I don't recall seeing any notice of this policy on the menu. A heads up would have been appreciated, but then again, I guess that's how they game the customers.

Grace M.

Yelp
We were waiting for three members of party of seven, but were kicked out of our table. The hostess was very rude and not understanding of our situation. She came by saying that we would have to be moved from our table if they didn't come in 30 minutes, but she moved us after less than 20. We ended up not eating there. Very disappointed. On the boom meter, this gets a DOOM!
google avatar

Yelp
Owner is rude and nasty! Unprepared for Devils Game days!!! Go next door to Redds instead! My kids waited and hour and a half for food and had to have 2 rounds of drinks before it came out! There were only 2 of them!!! She talks to owner bc HE asked how it was going and he was unapologetic and rude!!! Don't waste your time or money!

Yelp
Came here to hang out before seeing a concert at Prudential Center. It was a convenient spot since it's basically located right across from the arena. Having to kill some time before the arena opened, we ordered some wine and a few appetizers. The wine was pretty good. Just got two glasses of red wine. The food we tried was the margherita pizza and side order of sweet potato fries. They were both pretty basic and average. There's nothing to brag about. They did still taste good, and we finished everything. This place got packed as it became closer to show time, as expected. Most people probably hang out here before entering the Prudential Center to save some money. Overall, it's an okay spot. No issues.

Yelp
Briana took very good care of us before the Devils' game. The ribs were fabulous. Good location and atmosphere.

Yelp
I came to the bar , which I thought was Edison ale house . But apparently it's changed . The service was okay . The food is good , however it was the service. The bartenders act like their at a strip club, so if your not a man forget about . The atmosphere gives off racism. No African American workers. We're downtown Newark . Just Spanish women ladies flaunting their assets . I had to ask for a menu 3 times in order to get food. The drinks are subpar. The bathrooms are very clean . The music is cool . They still have a great drink selection . Maybe I'm spoiled. But I miss the bartenders . Tim , Mallory , Derrick , and the lady that ran the place Arieal . She made you want to stay spend all your money . Especially during devils games . She helped her team out . The owner dropped the ball

Yelp
I went here last night before the Devils Flyers game. Even though it was crowded due to it being a Saturday night game and the 20th Anniversary of the 2003 team, my wife and I were seated with 5 minutes. Food is good and atmosphere is great especially being around a packed bar of Devils fans!

Yelp
Great location as it is right next to Prudential Center. Met a few friends there before a concert. Most of us were able to sit at the bar. Ordered wings and shoestring fries and it was good. Bar was busy as expected but service was good.

Jodi V.

Yelp
Do not go to this restaurant. It is such a shame because it is such a great location. Before a big event at the arena, we got there before the crowd. We had a group of 7 so they made us go upstairs to an event hall, even though there were seats downstairs. The event hall was on the third floor and had plastic tables with paper plates and napkins on them. This space had large screens with video game type graphics playing and loud computerized music. Our waiter, Ryan, tried his best but it was doomed from the start. We ordered drinks, beers. They came about 15 min later. At that time we had also ordered apps. From what we could tell he had to go up and down the 3 levels to get everything even though there were two bars upstairs. After waiting for 1hour and 45 minutes at our table we did not have apps or our meals, we also didn't even have the next round of drinks we ordered. Many tables were leaving. The people who did get food said the food was horrible. The manager was so rude to the waiter who was really just trying to help us out. We paid for our drinks and left. I hope Ryan goes to work for a company that appreciates him. That place was horrible!

Michael F.

Yelp
I'll be honest I was there a couple of times and got ge great service but this time the male bartender started out great but then walked away and started talking to other co workers. I don't care if people do that but I finished my drink and was waiting for another for about ten minutes not good. Also my drinks were $34.50 a piece plus that guy also charged an automatic 20% tip for himself. Yeah not going back in a construction worker I'll make sure none of the job house there as well. plus the food isn't that good anyway. The head guy I've met he is a great guy but I never got a 20% tip added

Yelp
While nearing the Prudential Center by car to see the Cirque Du Soleil ice performance, we found a parking lot adjacent to the arena. We wanted a lite dinner before the show and found American Whiskey a few steps away from the lot. (There is another American Whiskey location in NYC.) The time: around 6:30PM. Only a few other customers were seen upon entering. My first impressions: Neat, orderly, comfortable. We were greeted at the front door, shown to a table and handed menus. Their menu is quite extensive, offering a good choice of Apps as well as Mains. My wife had the seafood wrap with sweet potatoe fries. For me, the cheese burger, well done with all the customary trimmings, it was grilled to my liking and was very good. Our food portions were more than ample. We went lite on the drinks as we wanted to enjoy this very special performance at the Pru Center. It should be noted that our server was very attentive. Although we had been to the Pru Center before, we had not had dinner in that specific area. American Whiskey, Newark, is highly recommended as a safe haven for grabing a quick bite or, enjoying watching sports on their wide screen TV's. If given the opportunity, I would return to American Whiskey to sample more of their menu choices.

Yelp
Heading to the Janet Jackson concert last week, with a couple of friends and discovered this great spot. Decided to drop in for a drink and a small bite. Great atmosphere and the Service was great as well. My bartender, Sara was welcoming, warm and quite skilled. She made me the best old-fashioned I've had in a long time. Believe me, I've had my share of bad ones. It went well with the pizza. Great vibe in this very chill atmosphere.

Yelp
The staff are lovely and the margherita pizza was chef's kiss!!! Definitely would return. Not too crowded on a Friday during lunch hour.

Yelp
Went here for a networking event. The pizza, chips guacamole and drinks were great. The day we went there was only one bar tender so the service was a little slow, but there were many of us. Great vibes.

Yelp
3 friends and I stopped in tonight for dinner before heading to the Prudential Center to watch a concert our kids were in. Big shout out to the entire staff and owner who provided not only stellar service, but checked in on us through the meal. We had the pizza, pretzel and nachos appetizers and all 3 were mouthwateringly delicious, and the drinks had that razzle dazzle which added to the perfection of it all. Kudos!

Yelp
I went here before a hockey game a couple months ago. I was by myself and sat at a bar table near the back of the restaurant. I was told I could sit wherever I wanted. I ordered the wings and a few beers, and they were what you'd expect from a place like this. Part way through my meal, I was told by my server that where I was sitting was a seat that a "more regular" patron usually sits and if they show up I would have to change my seat. No further explanation as to why. I paid my bill and left. I can't ever come here again with a clear conscience after essentially being told my money wasn't good enough here.

Yelp
The food is just "okay" and is very overpriced. We only went here because no one else was open for Easter. The music was way too loud to enjoy or to talk. Our waitress was very sweet, however.

Yelp
Buyer beware and look at the check. They automatically add 20% gratuity then add the tax on the food plus gratuity. When I brought it to the managers attention he played dumb. Let's just say I paid cash minus the tax I shouldn't of been charged

Yelp
Fantastic watering hole and kid friendly restaurant. More draft beers than you can shake a stick at. We ate here before taking our 5 year old grandson to Disney on Ice. Bar food was delicious. Huge portions. Fast friendly service. A must eat!

Yelp
As a Black person if you go here on a night where there is not a Devil's game you will be treated with royalty and respect. If you got during an event you're treated like a second class citizen. Came her after the HBCU class at Pru and there was a line of Black people waiting to get in. Saw the owner/manager who is a white man with light hair open the door and let a white couple in. Walked to the door to see if we could come in and he shut the door in my face and I asked how come the white couple got in and he said because it's my bar and shut the door again.

Yelp
I never write reviews... but feel I have to a this establishment. Went in for Happy hour and they just overcharge. Now I know we all been overcharged at one point... but the way they tried to explain it so it looked right didn't sit well with me. And on top of that 20% gratitude included in the bill.. I gave 2 stars because the bartender was nice. She was not the one who explained the bill. Maybe management?
