Yelp
Americanos is a perfect example of "looks aren't everything" when it comes to food. Everything looked picture-perfect & instagram worthy. Their plating game is on point. Also, their tortillas are texturally perfect, and their service is great. Great re-model too. Very modern.
Now the bad: First off, no pozole at 2pm because it's "not ready". If it's dinner-only, you should say so on the menu! What happened there? Okay okay, no problem, tacos it is. But while we wait, chips and salsa: perfectly crisp chips, but the most dismal selection of salsas EVER. They look great, but they are SO bland with zero spice (heat) and not enough salt/onion/garlic. The ones with the chips were beyond mild; there was no heat whatsoever. They tasted like jarred mild tomatillo salsa from a Frontera. Such a disappointment there.
One mushroom veggie taco & one chorizo with sweet potato taco, because I like it weird. Fillings were abundant, and again everything looks great! But the chorizo is dry. Mushrooms are just okay... not the "Macho Taco" level greatness I am expecting. My mom got the fish taco and said that the breading wasn't crunchy and fluffy like it *looked*, but dense and oily. Not right. As you can already guess, it's the same story with her chicken taco which is very, very bland despite all the toppings. Where's the salt?
The worst part for me is still the salsa. Two more come with our meal. One, the Habanero salsa is laughable. Not hot. Not tasty either. How is that even possible? Two, the Red Pepper salsa? There is an off-flavor. At best it's vinegar-heavy and at worst it's starting to go bad, which is very strange... and yep, bland again too.
So, they're like "Mexican light" for people that can't handle spice or don't want to eat any authentic Mexican food. I don't get it. It's like they can't decide who they want to be as a restaurant. The American-Mexican concept isn't working. I don't see them lasting long here with all the phenomenal Mexican just to the south of them in Blue Island.
Best part of the meal (besides the service) was the Mexican Coke. So, I don't think I'll be back as much as I want to try their pozole. Oh well.
Also, their first lock in girls bathroom stall doesn't really work and the locks are literally screws which is really gross to touch. Finally, the guy in the entryway (not our waiter... maybe a manager?) lets the door close on us. Nice way to end the experience. Lol! Dear god... someone help this place!
