The 12 Iconic Dishes of the American Heartland | Eater

"A regional chain that serves the old-school deep-fried, cornflake-battered grilled-cheese treat in the traditional manner: thick-sliced white bread smeared with mayo, stuffed with American cheese, battered, fried, and finished with two crinkly pickles on the triangles." - Eater Staff

Slow service, long wait for not being busy. Cashier ignored me when I went to purchase a separate soda after placing my main order. It was a hot day and had been waiting so long I got thirsty. Think 20 minute wait for a nachos, a salad, 2 burritos and a crisp and only 1 order ahead of me. Strange for a fast food restaurant. Food is always good price fairly average for what it is. Good selection of condiments. Good if you have time to sit down. If speed is an issue, go to their food truck. The man that operates it is much faster and he has more customers when I go. Also he is the only employee so he hustles.

I'm from out of town and we don't have anything like this where I'm from. The service was friendly, the overall setting was nice, and the food was really good. I definitely had a good experience here.

Had a bad experience with this Amigos. My box deal had way less food than I ever had before. The chips were maybe the most stale chips I’ve tasted. They didn’t put the ice cream in the kids meal. The staff was friendly enough but food was not good.

I ordered a large drink along with my bowl which they charged me for $2.99 and it was missing. I tired calling three times but don't pick up at all. I am not gonna die from losing $2.99, but I just hate that you don't take things seriously.

Every time I go to this Amigos I feel like a got darn amigo! They are friendly and work like got darn champs! Quick as a greased up leopard butt that just backed up into a rose bush! Give them a high five and a raise i say, got darnit!

Google
Scary!!! I was eating my food when I found some type of small metal object like a sponge Brillo pad in the food. Really turned my stomach and I took a picture. This was just a waste of money. First impression was everything. I will never go there again. And if anyone had swallowed this, it could be very dangerous.

Visiting from Florida. Amigos was amazing! I've gotten tator tot nachos from sit down restaurants paid more and gotten less. Wish we had Amigos in Florida!

Google
we pulled up at night to place and order since everything and they refused to take our order, we had been on the road for 10 hours that day and that’s how we were treated when we arrived . Worst restaurant in the U.S. I’ve encountered

Yelp
A lot of things come to mind of an Amigos if you have ever been to one in Lincoln during college...great pre or post drinking food! I hadn't honestly been to an Amigos since college. I had known of this location for a longtime but had never tried it until this morning. I researched what they have for breakfast food as any other Yelper would do before taking the plunge. I was quite impressed w/ their breakfast options...for me breakfast burritos are my jam & it's honestly hard for me to really pass up on really any breakfast burrito on a menu, lol. But, I was quite pleased w/ the service...all considering a fast food restaurant. I had ordered the Monster Burrito and wasn't disappointed. It was fast, hot and she brought it out to me in their dining room. Also, if you like hot sauces or a plethora of salsa's, it's very nice they have multiple options w/ their condiment bar next to the soda machine. I would honestly give it 3.5 stars if I could. If you want a low price point w/ many breakfast burritos, with lots of salsa options & quick service, try this Amigos for breakfast.

Yelp
Went to order and they refused to take our order. We couldn't fit into the drive through cause of the truck we were in and they refused for us to order

Yelp
Still overall a fan of this place. Still love the breakfast burritos and they are typically pretty pleasant here. Don't come as much as I used too but at least a couple times a year. Oh, and they still have my favorite fast food hard shell taco here. A bit greasy sometimes but the shell is the best I've found for fast food tacos.

Yelp
Great food for catering. Clean, fresh ingredients with lots of topping options. Good for tacos or bowls.

Yelp
I think we can all agree, the food offered here is best eaten in the restaurant? Right? Trying to get it home or delivered is gonna not end up as an optimal serving or presentation. I say all this because the dining room is closed! What did I do? Ordered a competitor, on their app, in your parking lot! Food was ready after the short drive! And we ate it in their DINING ROOM!

Yelp
For those who aren't local, Amigos is a Nebraska's version of a Taco John's: mighty tasty Mexican-influenced fast food. This location is A-OK. It is small, but the pros are, you can get through the order line fairly quickly and there's a good amount of seating. The cons are the condiment and drink counter are in an odd spot so the line will back up when people are going through. Also, the last time I visited, the television was tuned to a channel that was broadcasting a daytime talk show that was discussing some below the waist subjects that I would rather not have had to listen to during my meal. Obviously, taste is subjective, but I think the television could have been tuned to something a little more neutral. Anyway, it's an Amigos, nothing more and nothing less, and since it's been a long time since I've been local, I did enjoy visiting an old time guilty pleasure.

Yelp
Amigos is one of my must-eat places when we are back in NE! This location is always tricky to get in and out. The drive-thru wraps around the parking lot so getting out after you're done eating can be hard if they're busy. The soft tacos are my favorite. I've always loved their regular salsa too. I wish they would bring back the veggie burrito! I'm not a vegetarian but their veggie burrito was delicious! We always order crispos when we leave and these tasted stale. I think they use leftover tortillas to make them. I will say I've gotten crispos that taste stale more than once. I still love Amigos and I will always go back because their soft tacos & salsa are the best! It's just one of the places I MUST visit when back in the midwest! They also show respect to our military men and women by offering them a discount! Thank you, Amigos!

Yelp
Amigo's is one restaurant, specifically the location on Dodge in Omaha, that has gone downhill since the start of the pandemic. Apparently, they now charge for their condiments (Ranch, Queso), even though pre-COVID, everything was free. McDonald's doesn't charge for their ketchup, yet Amigo's tries to make extra on items that were free previously. Additionally, the customer service through the drive-thru was terrible. I'm not sure who, if anyone, hires or trains these people. Furthermore, 4 soft tacos, a drink, mexi-fries and condiments should not cost over $20. This is supposed to be fast food. The greed of raising their prices, and charging of items that once were free, as well as poor customer service, are reasons why I won't be back. I can get better food, with great service, for a fraction of the price, elsewhere in Nebraska.

Yelp
I go here a lot. This time sucked. They are stingy with their red sauce and had barely any meat in their burritos and tacos. Don't need to go again any time

Yelp
Not sure how a taco joint and a donut place got together, but whatever. I really wanted a donut, so I swung through. I went through here and ordered 2 donuts, early in the morning when they should have been fresh. They were rock hard and somehow burnt. I called to complain, the manager got my information and said he'd send coupons to make up for it. They never came. I emailed their corporate office, because at this point, I'm just pissed off on principle. They said they'd send something out. 2 months later, nothing - and they're not responding to new emails. So yeah, all I know about their donuts is they are burnt and stale and probably quite old - and the management is unreliable.

Yelp
I had never been to this Amigos before. The place was not super clean and it was really cold. However, the staff were amazing and the food was really good as well.

Yelp
Extremely sloppy coffee. Spilled all over my car and even kept spilling as I was holding it. It is not the same coffee that is sold in Lincoln Nebraska. Their food is not the same as in other cities and states.

Yelp
Terrific fast food! There's nothing I can really add with regards to the menu. Other reviewers have said how decent this local chain's good is, and I agree. However, the one TERRIBLE thing about Amigos that causes me to drop two stars... The drive-through attendant's bad, lousy, miserable attitude. I keep getting the same guy somehow. I think his name is Dan. For the purpose of this review, I'll refer to him as such. Here's a typical order sequence as placed through Dan's talking menu box: "Can I get your name for the ticket?" "Sure... it's Rob..." "Go ahead, Bob. Order when ready." "Uh, hi, I'd like to order a number two combo with a diet..." "What kind of soda for that number two?' "... A diet coke. And could I get the extra ta..." "A number two with a diet coke. Can I offer you and extra taco for one dollar?" "co... Yes, I was... I was just ordering the extra taco. I'd also like some hot sau..." "You want any hot or mild sauce with that?" Christ on the cross, Dan! Please just shut up and let me finish my order! Nothing irritates me more than being interrupted mid-sentence. Especially when I am being assaultingly interrupted by a harsh, grainy PA speaker. (Be advised, this is not a language issue. Dan speaks perfectly clear English.) But still, the food is amazing! So for now, I'll remain a customer... But just be prepared to stop and enunciate every single item singularly if you brave the drive-through. And dare you try to best the person on the other end of the microphone by trying to spit your entire order out slowly, clearly, in one attempt (as you would do at any other fast food drive-through), be prepared for a futile battle of wills with Dan. (I've actually tried. He still asks you to repeat everything one. at. a. time. No combination. No exceptions.) Favorite menu item: crisp meat burrito!

Yelp
I would highly suggest that anyone who /thinks/ they like late night taco bell runs try here next time, you'll never go back (to Taco Bell, I mean). In the interest of full disclosure, I really only eat here when we've been drinking heavily; but I do frequently DD, so I'm not /always/ drunk. Now that that's out of the way, this is easily the best fast food Mexican /anywhere/. If I were to attempt to sum it up in one sentence to an Amigos virgin, it would have to be 'deep friend taco bell', but it is so much more than that. Amigos has been a mainstay in Lincoln for a long time, and they are littered all about town. However, there is only one in Omaha, and it is mostly centrally located, and has also been there a long time (15 years that I can remember). They are also at the interstate in several small towns, so it makes a nice road trip stop. The single Amigos in Omaha has always been combined with something else, A&W, Kings, Winchell's, it often changes, but Amigos is always there; so we will concentrate on their menu. The main features are, as we often call them, 'crisp things' and 'soft things'. It's kind of like a 'choose your own adventure' game. Basically the only thing you can get here is a burrito, but with choices. You can choose the filling (ground beef, chicken, or pinto beans), you can choose the style (regular, or 'supreme'), and you can choose your healthy level (Deep fried, or not). My personal recommendation? one soft-beef burrito, and two crisp-pinto burritos, but pretty much everything on the menu is delicious. I also like mexi-fries as a 'filler' if you are still hungry. A note, I'm not really sure what makes them 'mexi', as near as I can tell they are just regular potato gems. The best news is, it is open until 3AM on the weekends, less important now that I'm old, but it was a life saver in college. Overall, this place is absolutely great, and is pretty much a required stop if we've been out on the town (it helps that I literally have to drive /right by it/ to get home from downtown).

Yelp
I grew up in Lincoln where Amigos has sort of a following, so one night I was feeling hungry and craving the good old Amigos I remember so dearly from my childhood so I decided to drive through. I grabbed a cheesy, two ranches (because amigos food is useless without the ranch), a spicy chicken roll up and a large mexi fry through the drive through. I get home and I'm missing my cheesy and ranches (and like I said before the food is useless unless doused in that wonderous ranch sauce) so there goes my meal for the night. I called to ask if I could come by tomorrow for a refund since it was already 8pm and it was snowing, they said they "don't do refunds they send out gift cards" so she proceeded to ask for my address and name. So here we are 15 days later and I get my "sorry we messed up your order, here's some more money to spend here to make up for it" letter and I get a measly $2.50 gift card!!!! I spent $11 on a meal that was ruined and you send me a gift card that doesn't even cover the cost of the food YOU FORGOT TO PUT IN MY BAG. So disappointing. Never coming back. You can keep my $2.50 gift card.

Yelp
Food is decent but damn who hires these people?!?? Every single employee I've had has been so rude, obviously they know nothing about good customer service and that's on PERIOD

Yelp
This is a really convenient place to stop and have lunch. There are three restaurants in one business. Winchell donuts, coffee and Amigos. I've only visited this place maybe twice before and I'm always skeptical because the inside doesn't seem to be maintained as good as it should be. It's filthy and I think they need to hire just a dining room attendant to maintain the high level of traffic. The condiment bar is always empty when I'm there to eat. The cheese they offer is hot in a soup (well) but discolored and not changed out. Has a funny taste to it as well. Not sure if this is a canned item or made fresh daily? The food was alright, I ordered the #8 consisting of a stuffed burrito with you're choice of protein offered inside and a side of tator tots. And a soda. She offered me to try the burrito hott, I'm guessing like pepperjacks fireball? It was spicy at first but not in the middle and then again at the end. I also ordered a cheesy burrito thinking the big burrito wouldn't do the job. It did and I left feeling more than full. I'd give the food a 7 from a scale 1-10. Service was great. The only thing I didn't like was how dirty the surroundings were. Makes me wonder if the kitchen is kept up in good state regulation standings? I'll have to try the coffee and donuts another day.

Zachary Sam Z.

Yelp
A friend of mine describes Amigos best, when he says it's like Taco Bell, only fried. Yikes. Coming here often is definitely a shortcut to a coronary, but inevitably when I visit I will go out one night with my O-town friends, get completely wasted somewhere in the Old Market, and insist that the designated driver stop at Amigos. Because, really, if you're going to wake up feeling crappy, why not just go all out?
google avatar

Bret L.

Yelp
I'm biased here. My first job was at an Amigos. We've got history like it was a first girlfriend or a first kiss. I still remember going to get two soft tacos and a drink for $2.10 when I was a kid. That represented freedom because my overprotective mother wouldn't let me stray too far from the house and it was only two blocks away. So why do I love this place so much? I love the food. It's not Mexican food, so don't be confused. I don't even know if I'd call it Tex Mex. So we'll just say American Mexican food. And it's delicious. Their soft tacos are bomb. They use awesome spices in their meat that gives it a really unique, delicious flavor. Then there are the delightful creations like the crisp meat burrito (think something like a taquito but better), their buffalo chicken items (when they make their appearances), and their homemade ranch dressing that is heralded throughout the land. Again, there aren't many things on the menu that I don't like. This particular location itself isn't the most convenient. It's at the corner of a busy, odd intersection, so the parking lot can be a pain to get into at times. Further, the parking lot arrangement is...unique...and can be a pain when it is full. But these are the types of things that I'm willing to gloss over. I stop at this place every time I'm back in Nebraska, without fail. You should do the same.

Yelp
Ordered off of uber eats and I'm currently in deep regret. Two words, food. Poisoning. I didn't even get through half the food I ordered because it was so disgusting. Now I'm curled up in a ball with the chills after throwing up their nachos for the past half hour.
google avatar

Matthew B.

Yelp
3 words. Crisp, Meat, Burrito. They should get their own food group. I've been eating at Amigos since I was in high school and will continue till the crisp meat burrito keels me over. All you need when you go is 3 crisp meat burritos and 3 sides of ranch dressing. Maybe a side of Mexi-Fries (tater tots) would do you in. It's not fancy, it's not authentic. It's just damn good. I also wish there were more than 2 in the Omaha area but luckily I work within driving distance of the new location. Thank you Amigos! Please don't change anything!
google avatar

Matt J.

Yelp
Out of all fast food "Mexican" restaurants this place is the best by far. I just wish they had more in Omaha. When I went to college in Lincoln, it was a weekend ritual of going through the drive thru in the wee hours of the night. I have been to this location a few times and it is just as good as it's Lincoln counterparts. Way better than Taco Hell or Taco John's! The soft tacos are frickin great! It's a little more expensive than $.89 tacos at Taco Bell but well worth it! Only gripe is that they don't take AMEX and that they don't have one next door.
google avatar

Niccole K.

Yelp
Wow, Amigo's sure is not how I remember it. I was in for a quick lunch yesterday and the girls working appeared hostile and less than pleased with actually having to work. Weird concept, right? At least I know now I am not missing much.
google avatar

Shaunita J.

Yelp
Went here, just because I kept driving by it. I know it's not super authentico, but I thought I'd give it a whirl. I got the #1 combo--soft tacos and potatoes and a drink. First of all, I hate hash browns, and didn't realize that the potatoes in the meal were hash browns/tater tots. Maybe if I had gone inside rather than the drive-thru, I would have noticed this. So, once I got home and looked inside the bag, I almost immediately tossed those. I had maybe one, and they're not that great and greasy--pretty standard tater tots. So, if you like tots... The tacos were okay, a little heavy on the sour cream, but not too bad. Somewhere in the Taco Bell category. But, for seven bucks, I don't know that it was a real value for soda, two smallish tacos and tater tots I didn't eat. And, later, I ended up vomiting, probably not due to the tacos (I have a head cold), but who knows? So, not going again.

Yelp
Let me just say that I have driven to Omaha with a friend from Vermillion SD, 2 hours away just to get Amigos soft tacos. go there and fill your face with tacoy goodness if you have the chance

Steven T.

Yelp
This particular Amigo's location is terrible, especially when ordering food to go, as they often give you something other than/cheaper than what you actually purchased. Having ordered here off and on for years due to proximity, it is clear to me that the people in the kitchen simply don't care at all--as opposed to other Amigo's locations (such as Gretna) where the chicken is far better and where they assemble all food with care and with fresh ingredients. Parking in the Dodge location is cramped and confusing, the dining room is dirty and unwelcoming, and the employee turnover rate is predictably high. I do not recommend this particular location at all. Does this place even have a manager?

Grant W.

Yelp
I've only visited this location once. I used the drive thru and the employee on the other end was rude and not friendly. I made it to the window after a long wait and it was an assistant manager that was working the drive thru. After getting my food and being rudely ushered on my way, I made it home to find out I was missing half my order. I contacted corporate and they were very helpful.

Rose F.

Yelp
Reading past reviews I can say that this amigos has turned things around. They always hire the friendliest, most respectful kids (and adults but most of the workers appear high school age, etc). Yes the drive thru isn't ideal, and the parking is weird, but food is great and they are open late and the staff is friendly!

Jaime T.

Yelp
Nothing fast about this place. I would have left but I couldn't get out of the backup of angry drive through people. There's been van here taking up the drive lane for at least 15 minutes and it is late at night. Tell them to F off and get on with it. Train your employees to handle later evening traffic. Wish I could leave
google avatar

Trisha T.

Yelp
Came at 8, cashier wasnt too happy even though they don't close till 9, as if her dog just died, but it's a sticky mess in here. And the soda machine gives black flakes if you get mt dew. Food hot so i know kitchen is on point.

Greg S.

Yelp
Ordered amigos using Uber Eats. I don't understand the negative reviews.$5 and it arrived at my door. Delicious with great home made salsa. I recommend. Again, as to the location and such.... I cannot speak to. I had the Barbacoa platter and one hard shell beef taco. Filled mt Mexican craving at a reasonable price.

Janelle B.

Yelp
This is a great mashup of Qdoba and Taco Johns. Cheap and good. Forget overpriced Qdoba when you can get more and better - Build Your Own Burrito - right here! Hot queso on the salsa bar, ready to add to everything. The crab rangoon burrito sounded sketchy but was best crab rangoon I've ever had! Huge, crunchy, zesty! Enchilada dinner was very good. Hope you expand into SD!

Nick S.

Yelp
Wow, either run the business right or shut it down. Just what I needed comin home from a late night at the office, cold food! The help was weak! Didn't ask if I cared for any hot sauce. The place is a dump anyway! It is what it is. Hi ho! Thought I would give it another try?!? Worse than ever! Can a drive thru get any slower?!? Get a clue!!!
google avatar

Kari R.

Yelp
So much better than Taco Bell for a quick Mexican fix. Fast, friendly and tasty
google avatar

Jason G.

Yelp
A friend took me to lunch here today...Upon walking in, hoping that since it was also a Winchell's I could get donuts, I was both disappointed and shocked...Disappointed because of the poor selection of donuts, and shocked at how dirty the booths and dining area were...I ended up ordering a cheeseburger and a crispy burrito, which was really just a big tacquito...The prices were good, though not as cheap as TB, but certainly far cheaper than Taco John's...I liked what I ordered and would definitely come back, though hopefully by then they'll have cleaned things up a bit

Kaeli N.

Yelp
Went here for breakfast as it was right on the corner and easily accessible. The drive thru girl was very nice and made sure she heard us clearly when ordering by repeating the order for us. Food was hot and fresh! I do not live in omaha so I am not used to chlorinated drinks so I was disappointed in my soda, especially since it costs more with breakfast because breakfast combos are only served with coffee and not everyone likes coffee. I would return here again, great location, great food, and friendly service.

Yelp
For fast food Mexican in the Midwest this one of the best i've had ( coming from Cali) Good solid menu, good for 2am visits too. Also serves as a winchells!
google avatar

Jennifer Y.

Yelp
Worst tex-mex ever! Ugghh everything here is disgusting and tastes plastic-y.. Awful, hate this place.
google avatar

Jared H.

Yelp
The only amigos around for miiiiillllessss so if you want amigos, one location is kind of inconvenient at times. Food is usually good but occasionally sub par...

Kevin B.

Yelp
My first indoctrination to Amigo's was a random ride through Nebraska City. Years later I'm pleased to find Omaha has one. It's rare now to find a mexican place that fries anything. That kind of sucks because there is nothing better than fried flour tortilla. Enter Amigo's... The fried burritos are to die for. The soft tacos are excellent too, my only advice on them is to eat them fast though because the heat wilts the lettuce.
google avatar

Nicholas P.

Yelp
Best soft shell tacos for sure! If you wanna top it off w greasy, yet delicious tots I wouldn't blame you!

Annelle H.

Yelp
Amigos 147th and Maple St. in Omaha, NE. Had a horrible experience at this location. Went through the drive through at 7:37pm on Monday evening. Placed our order and waited over 8 minutes to receive our food. We watched 2 young male employees goofing around instead of preparing our order. Should have known it was going to be messed up when we were over charged on our 2 tacos for $1.99 Monday special. Got home and my skinny beef taco salad was a chicken taco salad in a shell, no ranch dressing, or mild taco sauce as requested. Called Amigos and was hung up on the first time. Called again and spoke to another male who said he was the next thing to the manager. He immediately knew the 2 young males who were messing around and provided their names. He wrote up my complaint and now I will wait to speak with the manager Tuesday morning. I doubt that I can get my husband to go back here. I typically enjoy eating here, but this service was very frustrating.

Craig H.

Yelp
Amigos has Great Food! I love their soft tacos! I look forward to Wednesdays when they have their taco special. But, their their location and their service is in serious need of help. The last time I was there, I was surprised at how long I stood at the counter while the two young ladies behind the counter talked about text messaging. I literally had to ask them if I could place an order. They giggled and joked about it. I know they meant no harm, but they were actually being very rude. The soda machine had what seemed like hundred of little gnats or fruit flies flying around. The counter around the condiments looked like it hadn't been cleaned in several hours. There was random trash in the otherwise empty dinning area and several tables had crumbs and even trays left out. In a more recent trip, I was stunned by the complete lack of social skills displayed by the counter person. I ask if they had a nutritional chart and she answered with a straight "no" and stood their staring at me without so much as a smile. She seemed irritated and uninterested. The dinning room had about 10 people (about 1/3 full) and there were again random pieced of trash on the floor that several employees walked by without picking up. The table I sat at was also sticky. Not all days are like this and not all their employees are so inept. I have also been there when it was cleaner and the staff was much nicer. I look forward to updating this review as I see changes. I will still go to Amigos but their food is very good. But they need to clean up their service and dinning area.

Yelp
there is NO comparison to Taco Bell with this restaurant. Authentic flavor, quality, and great value. The food has more of a homemade taste and feel, and there is so much more variety. Excellent.
google avatar

Julie W.

Yelp
Wow, sadly disappointed because these were truly the worst donuts I've ever had! How do you screw up donuts? Can't comment on the mexican food since we just had donuts but it seems to me that you do one thing and do it better than the rest, ya know?

Sharon W.

Yelp
Don't get me wrong, the food is great. Crisp meat burritos and soft shell tacos and fries. Breakfast items like donuts and coffee. Delicious. The problem lies in the staff. Every time I've gone, the staff seems like they'd rather be anywhere in the world than at work. You can tell by their demeanor and the cleanliness (or lack thereof) in the dining room. There are always gnats by the cheese and the ranch dressing areas. Unappealing. To the owner of this business: I would go here much more often if it were cleaner.... my opinion? clean house and hire people who want to work. I've had better service at McDonald's from high schoolers.

Brad H.

Yelp
The best fast food Mexican food ever! Huge fan of their beef tacos and crisp meat burritos. I just wish they had locations in west Omaha.

Carrey H.

Yelp
Always a stop when I am in town! Crisp meat burrito is one of my favorite Omaha foods. Mexi fries are perfectly seasoned! Pay extra (or go inside) for the homemade ranch dressing! I love everything about this place!
