18 Standout Thai Restaurants Around D.C.

"Around since 2001, this Logan Circle pioneer (formerly Thai Tanic) continues to serve consistently good pad Thai and tom yum soup in a friendly, family-owned atmosphere. Other popular orders include a gloriously large portion of Thai fried rice and green curry marked with a “medium” spice tag. A sibling spot upstairs called Takara 14 serves superb sushi and nigiri from a Nakazawa alum, with a lively Bangkok-inspired bar in the back accented with colorful string lights. Local go-to Thai spot. I ALWAYS order the Soft Shell Crab, which is perfectly fried and accompanied by a spicy yet tasty sauce. The past few times we have tried the Whole Flounder (pictured here). They tend to fry it a little too deeply, but it still is solid. My wife really enjoys the Thai Iced Tea as well. Service is good and the prices are fair.

Google
Solid spot for classic, decently affordable Thai food at a cozy, no-frills spot located on 14th Street and just a few blocks away from Logan Circle. I dropped by Ammathar for dinner with a friend who was visiting from out of town and deeply craving Thai iced tea, and we had a great time here. It's a relatively quiet restaurant, so it was perfect for us to hole up in for several hours and catch up about life and all that had happened since their last visit to DC. The staff was super friendly, and I appreciated how long they let us hang around the restaurant after we had finished eating. It wasn't a huge problem for us, since we were spending so much time yapping, but it did feel like the place was a smidge understaffed. The food took quite a while to come out, and the poor singular waitress seemed a little bit overwhelmed with the four or five tables that came in and out during our time there. Again, it wasn't necessarily problematically slow for me since we weren't in a rush, but I might recommend trying a different spot if you are in a hurry. Their food is all solid. The menu is quite large, so it was a bit hard to choose what I wanted, but I eventually settled on the pumpkin and shrimp red curry. It was super warm and comforting, with the spices from the red curry and the rich, mushy pumpkin adding to the cold weather / autumnal vibes. The shrimp was nice and tender, and they packed a great seafood flavor. My friend got their fried pork belly, which was also quite tasty; it was tender, fatty, and had a great balance of sweet, savory, and spicy flavors.

My friend and I went to this Thai restaurant for the first time. Service was great, but there were some other not-so-good things. The table had crumbs on the seats, which implied to me that it hadn’t been cleaned. The food was not so good too. The veggie spring rolls were mostly batter and had very little filling, which to me implied they were store bought frozen and simply reheated. The green curry I got was grainy, as if the curry paste was not fully resolved. The bamboo shoots were stringy and not tender at all. The tofu in it tasted old and tough. My friend enjoyed her noodle dish, and the mango sticky rice was very delicious, but I couldn’t get over the other downsides. For the prices they charge, I’d recommend trying other Thai places over this one.

This is one of my favorite Thai restaurants in town, the price is very reasonable! KANOM JEEN NAHM PHRIK is my favorite! And the staff are very friendly!

Google
TLDR: This is probably the best Thai food I've had in D.C. This is a family-owned restaurant and it really shines in the mom-and-pop eatery realm. This was the most authentic taste I've had compared to my time in Thailand and my mom's cooking. Don't tell her I said that. Everything I ordered was excellent and I was shocked at every dish. Not to knock Thai restaurants, but they Americanize their recipes quite often. I don't just mean with the spice levels either, but it's the flavors and ingredients. Remember, Thai food is distinctly known for combining the sweet, sour, and spicy components into a harmonizing melody that transports you to the motherland. Definitely my new favorite spot.

🌶I ordered the pineapple shrimp fried rice, which is my number 1 gauge for Thai restaurants. Needless to say based on the rating they blew me away. The rice was seasoned with the spice level (3) was perfect and the shrimp chicken and extra veggies were bussing. I'm so glad untried this place its definitely worth a stop no cap…

Delicious food. I just loved all the dishes we ordered. The thai coconut griddle was top notch yummy 😋. It’s a must try I would say. Parking is tricky.

Google
This no-frills little eatery serves authentic and flavourful Thai food. I had Tom Yam soup, beef salad and the green curry chicken, and shared a mango rice desert with a friend. They are all good. The manager (I guess also the owner?) is friendly and helpful. Will come back.

Yelp
I ordered in as I was craving some deliciously spicy Thai. This restaurant delivered. The drunken noodles were both spicy yet had a very like pungent deliciously flavor to them. The Tom soup had a spicy, sour flavor and it was so delicious to the last drop. The garden rolls added a really nice refreshing flavor and I loved the peanut dipping sauce. It was a step above the standard peanut sauce and was more subtle and nuanced. I am a vegetarian and found there to be many options available to order. They also had a lot of modifications available. I highly encourage visiting this restaurant. I cannot comment on the restaurant environment and service as this was a delivery order. But will update this review if I do visit IRL.

Yelp
Best pad Thai than even what I had in Asia. They need to bottle the sauce and sell it.

Yelp
4/12/24 Day 8 in DC, 4 museums, a park and other sightseeing walks, we are exhausted! So we stayed in the hotel for delivery YUM PED YANG Roasted duck shredded and tossed with ginger, scallions, celery, cilantro, and chili paste in a spicy lime juice. THAI STAR Minced chicken and bell peppers sautéed with fresh chili sauce and accompanied by whole shrimp and Hoi Jor (shrimp, minced chicken, and herbs blended to perfection, wrapped in tofu, deep fried). This must have tasted amazing freshly served in the restaurant because the driver seemed to have gotten lost because it look longer than GrubHubs estimate of delivery, so it came just lukewarm and it's still amazingly delicious! Next time in DC we will have to go in the the restaurant.

Yelp
Great local neighborhood place. Food always comes out with a spicy flavor so watch out. Great service as always from Taeng (?). She has been here almost every visit and always 5* service. This time, I had the Red Curry Chicken with extra peppers. I love extra veggies in my curry dishes. It was a little spicy but very manageable. This is a cute neighborhood place. I'd say of the 10 or so Thai places I've tried in DC, this is my favorite. Give them a try!

Yelp
I've picked up food from here a couple of times in the last few years since it's quite close to my apartment. It's always been fine in a pinch, but today I ordered pad kee Mao and it had a bunch of old and soft veggies in it. Key example if this piece of tomato that has a super soft spot on it, maybe it was turning rotten already. The bell peppers were also a little soft and the green beans were also a bit limp. Not sure how business is going, but serving food with old veggies certainly isn't going to help. The people who work there are quite nice, so it's really a shame. They should serve fresher food.

Yelp
Yes that is a dead insect on the shrimp in my Pineapple Fried Rice! Absolutely DISGUSTING! I will be filing a report with the BBB and reporting to the DC Health Department!

Yelp
Not sure where to start. So Ammathar took over from the old and well established " thai tanic" and Ammathar DID NOT deliver tonight. The food was cold and mediocre, and the wait staff was not even trying to take your order / deliver the meal while it was warm / follow up. We felt as if we were invisible, as did the patrons at the tables next to us. Not to worry " we will NOT be back" to give them a second chance. You just lost "repeat thai tanic " customers.

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch, and was immediately taken care of which was nice. Ordered a thai tea, tom yum, and some curry. The tom yum had a good amount of veggies in it, but not the most flavorful. The thai tea was pretty standard. The pumpkin curry though was amazing! Good flavour and spinciness. The pumpkin was cooked perfectly and the shrimp was nice and tender.

Yelp
While the food is excellent The waiter was perfectly attending Out of nowhere the hostess tells us we need to leave immediately as we are signing our more than $600 tab for 4 people. We were beyond our 2 hour window. We had been there for 2 hours 15 minutes. The hostess was so rude to us - and I have never been treated so poorly in my life. I will never darken the door of that restaurant again!

Keiko M.

Yelp
The services were superb and all dishes were excellent. It is definitely worth dining there.

Yelp
Super authentic and delicious food! Service is below average, order's were taken wrong with dishes being delivered to wrong tables and orders. Aside from that, the food alone was a 5. Haekun $9 - totally recommend. The sweet plum sauce was a delicious pairing. Thai Lemongrass $16 - came with a bowl of rice, spice, and flavor was delectable. Will be back for this! Pad See Eew $15 - Really great flavor, with decent pieces of chicken, the egg was also surprisingly flavored and a great bite. Totally recommend this spot, what an awesome hidden gem.

Yelp
It was good (3.5 stars), but would probably go somewhere else for Thai. The tomyum was great!! So clean and spicy and had great flavors. Everything else was just ok. The drunken noodles were a little soggy. The service was very slow. They were clearly overwhelmed by the number of people in the restaurant and there was only 1 (?) waitress.

Sarah W.

Yelp
Food was delicious. I had the green curry. Highly recommended. The staff was friendly and food was fast.

Yelp
I was disappointed with this place. We were the last take out to order and a couple of things warranted 3 stars: 1) curry chicken Panang was plain -nothing on the curry just sauce and chicken. Sticky rice wasn't really sticky We ordered papaya salad, Tom yum soup, Pad See Eew. Considering the Pad See Eew & Panang was $16.00 & $15.00 per dish it wasn't worth the money. I do not recommend this place
google avatar

Yelp
Ammathar was such a nice gem, it was empty when I went so the service was fast and excellent. It is a great spot for casual thai food. The papaya salad was very refreshing and not too spicy which happens to be the case with many of them. The pineapple fried rice was divine and the sweetness was not too overwhelming rather welcomed with the dish. The green curry was very spicy but that's just the nature of the dish, it wasn't too lemongrassy and truly a great overall dish.

Yelp
This location used to be Thai Tanic. Their name change confused me. The website says coming soon for Thai Tanic (it was there circa 2001-?) What a great time to be on 14th Street NW. On to the review: For a cold December's night, Ammathar's takeout counter was bustling. The restaurant was half full but got busier after we sat down in the window booth looking out to 14th street. A great booth if you can grab it! The staff were friendly, over worked with the consistent clientele coming in for take out orders. The place has a lot going and considering it, the food came out quickly. The menu is pretty extensive and authentic. A new dish I hadn't tried -- chicken stuffed tapioca. We started off with these as an appetizer and waited for our mains. They were interesting-- and, very chewy! The spice and flavor in the food is intense. If you don't like heat -- ask for mild. I enjoy a kick with my curry- but this certainly packed an extra punch. Overall, the meal was quick, authentic, and prepared well. The man who came in to use the bathroom and got locked in as well as the takeout line in the middle of the place kind of made things a bit strange. But, also, interesting!

Yelp
I ordered food for delivery from here. In the instructions, I put to call or text when the food was delivered. Over an hour passed and the app still showed my food as being prepared. I finally called the restaurant and they told me it had been dropped off forty minutes ago. I told them no one had contacted me and it was still showing as preparing in the app and they just said "Okay!" and hung up. The food was fine, average to below average, but also hard to judge since it was cold. I wouldn't normally let a delivery experience impact my review, but in this case the food was delivered by the restaurant and not through DoorDash, etc. Was extremely frustrating as not only was I starving from waiting so long, but I had cold food that I pretipped on and seemingly no recourse. The restaurant simply didn't seem to care.

Yelp
I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars but I love Thai food in general so 4 it is. Ammathar provides a tasty, if not quite perfect, dining experience. I ordered the pad see ew and a chicken satay. The pad see ew was delicious and I would get it again. The ingredients were all in good proportion to each other and well-balanced. I would have liked a little more browning on the noodles, and the beef was chewier than expected, but it was still solid overall. The chicken satay was sliced too thickly, in my opinion, and so the lovely grilled flavor and marinade didn't get all the way through the meat. However, the peanut sauce that it came with was amazing. I saved the rest (they included quite a large container!) and drizzled it onto meal after meal the rest of the week. Ammathar feels like a reliable weeknight dinner, an enjoyable, but perhaps not craveable, restaurant.
google avatar

Justin N.

Yelp
Not good but not bad. It's disappointing to me that the only Thai restaurant on 14th street is mediocre. I came here with a friend for dinner one night. The inside of the restaurant is boring and there wasn't any background music playing. The Chicken Stuffed Tapioca did not have as much chicken stuffed inside as my friend and I would have liked. The Soft-Shell Crab Pad Thai could have used a little more sauce and flavor, and more could have been done to incorporate the soft-shell crab into the dish rather than just dropping it on top with no sauce or seasoning. The Crispy Duck was very heavy and fried, and the dish could have been balanced out better with an acidic component.
google avatar

Ethan G.

Yelp
I am starting this review by bashing anyone that gives this place under 4 stars. In my opinion, Ammathar is the pinnacle of authentic Thai food. In a city where I have struggled to connect with Asian food of various cultures, I found myself getting a little emotional here. I found myself staring at the menu for 10 minutes, just struggling to decide what I wanted because there were foods that I had no clue existed, foods that looked incredible, and just so many options. I started off with the chicken stuffed tapioca. It was one of the most interesting textures of a dish I've ever had. Tapioca is something I've had mostly in bubble teas but I've never had it as one of the main components of the dish. It brought a nice chewy texture to the outside while the chicken was well seasoned on the inside. Combined with the crunch of the peanuts, this was an unexpected feeling for my palate, but the good type of unexpected. I then got the param long song (chicken breast in a yellow curry and peanut sauce mix). In a chicken dish, the chicken should be the star, but the real winner was the sauce. There was an abundance of flavor permeating throughout the dish which felt like my tongue was on a celebration of Thailand. The harmony between the yellow curry and the peanut sauce made me want to go in for another bite, but there was a tinge of sadness through each bite, as I knew I was nearing the end of the dish, and thus my happy celebration. In the span of 1.5 hours in the middle of Thomas Circle, I was transported to Thailand and back.

Kadin M.

Yelp
Great food, I got there right at 5 when they reopen for dinner service and there was no one to tell me to find my own seat so I waited for a few minutes and came back and was seated right away and had great service. But it was still pretty empty at about 5:10. Food came out very fast and was amazing and the crowd picked up a little around 5:45. Would definitely recommend for a bite after work or a quick meal with friends or family
google avatar

Richard S.

Yelp
Food is gas but when you order carry out and pick it up they get very confused and say they don't have your order. Also the rice portions are very small and they charge $5 extra for another small tin of rice. Lots of potential but disappointing
google avatar

Sharlene S.

Yelp
Vibes-we sat at a lovely window booth, best seat in the house if you can get it. Service- our server was attentive and respectful. We sat for quite a while and she removed plates and kept our waters refilled. It was great. Food- share shrimp cakes and dumplings. Super fresh and crispy. We got pad see ew, Bangkok seafood, and a soup. All were a large portion and very flavorful. Drink- we got a bottle of Malbec. $21 delicious. Great value and taste. We got a second bottle.

Yelp
I stopped here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon with my wife and son. Both of them are vegetarians and my wife is Gluten intolerant. The staff was great helping to figure out what meals would work. I had the red curry and Tofu which was very good. My wife had the lemon grass vegetables with tofu and she really enjoyed it. I would highly recommend the food here.

Yelp
YES YES YES! So good, so delicious!! This is a must go to and repeat kind of place. I stopped in for a drink and something light to eat. I started with a lychee martini at the bar and it was fruity, sweet, colorful and chilled. I ordered the Kanom Jeep appetizer. It has a nice presentation, was served quickly, perfect temperature and I loved how the sauce for dipping was blanketing the dish. It was so good and I ate them all!! I then ordered the spicy beef salad. The presentation was beautiful and the flavors were sweet with a little fire. The lettuce was fresh and the ingredients were crispy. It was wonderful. The staff is very friendly and efficient. The decor is minimal but I am there to eat not look at art. I'll be back!
google avatar

Dani K.

Yelp
Tasty plates at this little gem. Don't feel deterred if the staff seems rude at first they are actually really kind. The meals were made really quickly and everything was so fresh. I can't wait to come back!!
google avatar

Raghav A.

Yelp
Food was great. I just picked something off the top of the menu and my head and it was brilliant! Service was decent Ambiance was lit and the playlist sharp.
google avatar

Becca K.

Yelp
Ordered delivery from here and was unimpressed. Got the papaya salad, chicken larb, and chicken drunken noodles. The papaya salad and larb were pretty good but was disappointed with the drunken chicken. Noodles were gummy and there were no vegetables in it. I would have given a 3.5 review if possible. I'll probably order from somewhere else in the future.
google avatar

Paige S.

Yelp
This place was so cute! It is not the fanciest restaurant, but the exterior is adorable with these hanging flowers. The inside is bright blue and colorful, which made for a fun atmosphere. Honestly, I was overwhelmed with the menu options. There were so many different dishes that looked phenomenal and I liked that the menu included pictures of some of the food. Additionally, as a vegetarian you could make almost any dish vegetarian with either vegetables or tofu! I am not used to having so many available choices, so that certainly left an impression on me. The food itself was delicious. I enjoyed eating here because the Green curry I got was very spicy - which I love! The tofu was also nice and crispy. I also got fried spring rolls which came with a sweet dipping sauce, and the rice paper rolls which came with a peanut sauce. The green curry was the best part though. I would love to come back and eat here.

Yelp
Walked in without a reservation on a Friday night with another friend and we got seated promptly. The service was rather slow but the food was excellent. This place is the spot to go if you're looking for authentic Thai cuisine in town!
google avatar

Tonia K.

Yelp
First, I love Thai food! So I'm always down to try a new spot in DC. Now, Ammathar is not new...i just hadn't tried it yet. My first visit was for takeout. I ordered the Drunken Noodles w/tofu and a Tom Yum soup. The drunken noodles were good, though much more oily than I prefer. I got the medium-spicy level and it was perfect. I like spicy food and I'd say the medium-spicy level provides kick without being overwhelming. Sadly, the Tom Yum was not the best I've had. It too seemed a bit oily. The food was prepared timely. Perhaps the dine in experience is better. While this wouldn't be my go-to spot, I wouldn't rule it out for takeout.

Keith M.

Yelp
The service was gracious and polite . THAT address has been several Thai restaurants. This is by far the best I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT and will make it my destination for Thai food in the future.
google avatar

Rajit S.

Yelp
We both ordered the mee grob lad na, and it was very good. Definitely will be going back

Yelp
I came here on a Friday night around dinner time before an event on 14th Street. To my surprise, the place wasn't too busy! Soon after we sat down and ordered, however, the place started to fill up. The space itself is a bit on the small side, though they do pack a lot of tables inside. They don't take reservations, so keep that in mind if you do plan on getting to Ammanthar on a weekend night. All of the food we ordered was very tasty and of good quality. I had the bean sprouts with mushroom and tofu, which was a delightfully hearty dish while still being light. My wife had the khao soi, which was delightfully presented and tasted wonderful. The service here was very good until they got busy. Before they were busy, we were waited on promptly and often received water refills. Once the crowd started to turn up, visits to our table were much less frequent. I ended up having to go to the bar in order to pay for our check. I'll excuse the service issues when it got busy, due to the staff being very friendly and having smiles! They are very efficient and overall the place had a good vibe. This is the first Thai restaurant I've been to in DC, and it definitely delivered!
google avatar

Hong L.

Yelp
This restaurant on 14th street has some really well spiced dishes. My group came by on a Saturday afternoon and sat at the nice window booth. The khao soi was extremely flavorful along with nice presentation. My friend liked the crispy duck they got but I thought the duck was a little over cooked. Overall I really liked the dish I got and would come back again. It took a little bit for us to get the food and our waiter wasn't the most attentive, but I also feel like this is the type of place where you come for the food instead of the service.
google avatar

Kit G.

Yelp
What we love is- this is a local neighborhood restaurant and you really feel it. A bit off the beaten path and not swamped by tourist. This was not the best Thai, but it was good. We would be back for sure. Pricing was extremely reasonable. Four in our party. Split and shared four entres and a variety of appetizers. Used to be Thai Tanic. Now under new name.

Joanna A.

Yelp
How have I lived 2 miles away and not discovered this place yet? Food was SO good (had Caesar salad with salmon perfectly cooked), server (Oz) was excellent and got every specification right. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was it was a bit noisy - music too loud for a couple of us with sensitive ears.
google avatar

Jade B.

Yelp
Amazing food and service! Have order from here several times and has never failed to miss. The everyone is very kind and the vibe is low key and welcoming :) will definitely be coming back soon!!

Sharon M.

Yelp
My first time to DC alone. Me and a friend who lives in DC and works Downtown DC suggested we come here for dinner, I did have a taste for Thai food. The experience and the food was GREAT!!!! When I come back to DC I will make sure I visit again!!!! Sharon

Yelp
What a wonderful experience with fresh hot food delivered to the table. We walk in it is the cutest little place ever do you need to wear a mask when you come in we sat down and we're greeted by the cutest little server and she explained everything to us and what she recommended. We ordered pad Thai, lemon grass chicken and pork and mixed vegetables in a garlic sauce. First of all the flavors were bursting as soon as it hit all 3 of ours pallets. We looked at each other and said wow! I highly recommend this location!
google avatar

Freddie F.

Yelp
Mediocre Thai food. Easy to find better. Hole-in-the-wall feel which was fine/good but it was expensive for a very average tasting meal.
google avatar

Lauri P.

Yelp
Short and sweet...I have been in DC all week for a business meeting. Working long days and not craving overpriced hotel food I decided to walk to a Thai restaurant about a bloc away. I sat at the bar and ordered some takeout. It was not busy at all while. I specifically asked for massuman curry with chicken, NO onions. Got my meal and headed back to my hotel. Shame on me, I should have checked. Got to my room, my meal had a lot of onions. They charged me 5 cents for the takeout bag, with no mention. However, neglected putting silverware or napkins in paid bag. I could have gone back out and asked for those things but quite frankly after working almost 12 hours I was simply tired and hungry. Some of these places need to be more aware of their customers circumstances, special food needs, providing proper utensils to enjoy their meal with, etc. my bill with 1 small appetizer was $37, not chump change. Very disappointed in this experience.

Yelp
I am so sad to give this restaurant one star. I was here twice this week with my family. We really liked the food but last night I was absolutely shocked when the owner asked me to clean the milk spilled from my son's cup. ON THE FLOOR. It was an accident and not something on purpose. While two other servers were smiling to my apologies, the lady owner responded to me all pissed and asked me to clean. Not only I had complimented them for the food and be a courteous customer, the restaurant wasn't even full. I was so shocked I didn't want to create a scene and cleaned. After I finished she showed up with the mop. I want to notice I wasn't done with my food. So we paid and left. If you don't want families at your restaurant, put a sign at the door. Very very very sad.

Yelp
I didn't have high expectations for this place at all...but wow, Ammathar totally exceeded my expectations. Out of all the fancy places I've dined at in DC, this was the most memorable. There's nothing special about the decor or the service, but the food is truly spectacular. I'm used to Southeast Asian flavors, and it's been so long since I found a restaurant that delivers on those flavors that I've been longing for. The prices amazing, the drinks amazing, and the food is delicious! Truly will travel back to DC just for this Thai food.

Yelp
Thai Tanic is located at a busy part of 14th, and can be a little hard to miss (next to Baan Thai). I ordered the Moo Todh Kartiem Thai lunch special, which was a well seasoned pork and a side of jasmine rice. The pork was very tasty, but also a tard bit salty. The rice/pork proportion could have also been a little less modest, as I found myself wanting a lot more rice serving for the amount the meal cost. I did a pick up, and staff was respectful and friendly. The interior was not very well lit, but pretty cozy and clean. This is a place that you can stop by with some friends for a quick lunch or dinner.

Yelp
I used to come here about 15 years ago till 8 years ago, I visited every trip. Then I haven't been back to DC for awhile till now. I was a disappointed that Thai-Tanic wasn't around, I did a little searching. Realized that they are still own by the same family, just changed their name, I was so happy! Chicken fried rice was so good. Yum Woon Sen was as good as I remember. Tom Yum was perfect for a cold winter night in DC. Pork Shoulder and sticky rice and spicy dipping fish sauce was so good. I order mild so my hubby can eat it. He thought it was spicy... HAHA which means they are legit when you do spicy, expect to get a tissue box next to you and some water or better some milk! The place has been remodeled, bright, shiny, beautiful decors, very welcoming with a small bar. I'll definitely dining in on our next visit when it allows. Authentic food, well price, and good people.

Yelp
If I could give negative stars I would. The staff barely acknowledged our presence as we came into the restaurant, it spent them 5 minutes (all the servers were unoccupied and not busy!) to notice us and give us our ordered takeout. There was strange sediment in our Thai Iced Teas, I don't recommend this at all!! My family and I are Thai food eaters - we eat Thai food almost once a month due to cravings. Their Pad Thai was salty and tasted/smelled like cat food - what Thai restaurant fumbles their Pad Thai?! Their online website was confusing too - the dishes looked fabulous on their Thai Tanic website, but when actually ordering and getting the food, it was subpar and underwhelming. Disappointed and disgusted!
