Ammos Hotel, near Chania, Crete - Explore & Book

"Anonymous chain hotels on Crete are legion, so Ammos - owned by the Tsepetis family since the 70's and now vibrantly redecorated and brilliantly run by the effervescent Nikos - makes a hugely refreshing change. Fifteen minutes' drive from Chania’s bar- and restaurant-lined Venetian harbour, it gazes out over a sandy bay, whose warm shallow waters are ideal for younger bathers. Lovingly redesigned by Elisa Manolas, the woman behind the very chic Orloff on Spetses, the style is light, airy and Scandinavian: lashings of wood, glass and wicker allied with colourful artwork and loads of modern comfort, including cushy sofas and high-speed internet. But the real secret of this hotel lies in the details: kitchenettes in every room (great for budget-conscious families), fragrant Apivita toiletries, multilingual and attentive staff, and the thoughtfulness of Nikos, who is everywhere at once. More than ‘just another beach hotel’, Ammos is one of those rare places where the personal touch has been wrought to a fine art. Highs Superb yet unobtrusive service: with his quick thinking and impressive array of contacts, Nikos can arrange anything in 5 minutes flatLarge and luxurious bathrooms - obviously designed by someone who has spent time in hotels, and particularly rare in GreeceTruly delicious food served throughout the dayThe beach is sandy, shallow (i.e. relatively warm in the early season) and sheltered (great for kids)With Chania on your doorstep, it's ideal for those who want to combine a peaceful beach retreat with sallies into town for nightlife, shopping and museums Lows Often full in July and August - book early! The area around the hotel is suburban and rather charmless - not the sort of place for strolling around (though you can walk along the sandy beachfront)The beach can get crowded in summer, but Ammos has plenty of loungers and parasols, so you don't need to stressNot the easiest to find - make sure you do like we didn’t, and print out detailed directions (attached to every i-escape booking confirmation)" - Heidi Fuller-Love

Ammos Hotel | Best places to stay in Crete

"Under the watchful magpie eye of owner/manager, Nikos Tsepetis, Ammos has evolved from a mid-range, mid-size 90’s hotel into a landmark property on Crete (and indeed Europe). Diehard fans return year after year for the hip design (with new additions and fresh looks each season), excellent Cretan comfort food, and warm, genuine service. The location on sandy (if unspectacular) Agioi Apostoloi beach, a 10-minute drive from Chania town, is another major draw, especially for families. A seaside pool, playroom, and a few hours of free childcare  on weekdays make this an extra attractive proposition for parents of young children. " - Rachel Howard

When art meets hospitality – that’s exactly how Ammos Hotel in Chania feels. Elegant design, warm and thoughtful details everywhere, and a unique artistic atmosphere that makes your stay unforgettable. The vibes are simply amazing, the food is outstanding, and the whole place radiates comfort and style. Perfect both for a relaxing family holiday and for enjoying time with friends. A true gem in Crete.

This is a wonderful hotel that strikes a balance between high end and family friendly. It's a stylish boutique hotel yet at the same time laid back and charming. All the staff are wonderful so it be wrong to name individuals as I would be worried if I missed someone! Food and drink are very good and we loved our room. It large and stylish with a balcony. We will definitely return as we loved it so much.

I was so pleased with this place- the service was impeccable, so warm and thoughtful, this came through all staff members who go out of their way to accommodate. The breakfast was joyful and the food in general was really great, even the kids menu was really good quality. The place was really relaxing and easy to like. As a new mum I can only really be as happy as my baby and it was so wonderful that she was catered for so well. In fact for the first time ever, she wanted to be carried by the waiting staff at the restaurant rather than me! A very unique and special place. Thanks Ammos team- I hope I get to return :)

I just love small luxury hotels. I’ve stayed at this hotel twice now. The food is fabulous. The hotel is beautiful. The people are so kind. The beach is amazing. Chairs, towels and water included. Great massages. highly recommend this hotel.

Eclectic small hotel on the beach. Staff and food - 5 star! |However, this is a family hotel and unfortunately some children were allowed to be out of control at meal times by their lax parents. |There is also a small hotel dog who is not controlled in the restaurant at meal times. The dog does the rounds of the restaurant and sits and begs at the tables, especially if you’re eating meat. One night - the dog actually jumped up at me whilst I was eating! |The hotel specifies no children in the gym or roof top bar , but this is overlooked by parents and staff.

If you wonder whether this is actually 4.9/5 hotel - I must say that it actually is! A bit on a pricey side compared to other accommodations in the area - but you get an experience of a 5-star hotel. Every single detail is thought of. Very friendly personnel that seems genuinely interested in you having the best experience. Exceptionally kids friendly. There are even beach and water toys available. Kids room with nanny works only several hours a day, but still feels like a very nice compliment. Beach is very close. Amazing that you can freely use sunbeds that belong to the hotel, and there is always enough for everybody (or personnel will find you one). Restaurant is a bit pricier than all others in the area, but food is really great. The only restaurant where our kid was enjoying kids menu. Breakfast was not included in the room rate and was quite pricey as well, but was very great! More or less everything is 10/10 experience. May be some suggestions for improvement (if you are very picky!): - Given sustainability focus of the hotel, great to move to full size bathroom amenities instead of many single use bottles of shampoo/conditioner/body wash - Having unlimited towels for the pool/beach is nice, but can really lead to "overconsumption" easily. May be great to encourage 1towel per person/day :) - Also would be nice to have room rates with breakfast/ half- full board options. It is quite unusual for the hotels of the same price range to have breakfast not included Overall, this was one of our best hotel experiences. Thank you!

The hotel was very relaxing and simple, I think that was the vibe they were trying to get at. The hotel also had their own part of a beach with free sunbeds that was right below the hotel which was very convenient for us. I also highly recommend this place for a family.

Amazing staff, location, design, food, hotel, everything. But just as a warning: if you plan to drive around and see Crete, take a different hotel. The place is so great that you don’t want to leave it.
