10 Best Local Eats in Amsterdam | Condé Nast Traveler

"If you’re looking for one of those classic Indonesian rijsttafel restaurants, with an unending parade of spicy, sweet, and sticky dishes, formality, and dim lighting, this isn’t the place. We’re talking modern small plates (around five to share between two diners is good), cooked up by Indonesian aunties, of staples like coconut- and turmeric-rich yellow rice, chicken satay, and sea bass cooked in banana leaf. On Friday and Saturday nights, this is the place to go for a date night or cocktails and dinner with the gang." - Clodagh Kinsella

We went as a group of four for a weekday dinner. I expected the sharing plates concept and so was not disappointed by the size of the plates. Moreover the staff took time to explain how the ordering process works. The wait was not too long. Definitely recommend the Beef Rendang. It was awesome. We shared 12-15 dishes between the 4 of us including dessert. The pancakes with minced beef were pretty good too. The desserts were different and unique.

The vibe and atmosphere of this place are really nice. Based on one of the waiter’s recommendations, we ordered the Ayam Pangang, Ikan Pepesan, Sambal Tempeh Buncis, Sate Mix (chicken & shrimp), chicken and vegetable spring rolls, and fried rice. The food was good overall, but our favorite was the chicken dish. It was very tender and flavorful. The fried green beans was our least favorite as its flavor wasn’t very prominent. The seabass tasted overwhelmingly of lemongrass. They offered us complementary dessert (Dadar Gulung), which was a very lovely gesture. It was interesting and not too sweet. Given that this restaurant is based on ordering multiple plates, they should consider bigger tables for parties of two. We reached a point where we didn’t know where to put the dishes.

I found that the service was a bit slow, which was somewhat disappointing. However, the flavors of the dishes did make up for it to some extent. I ordered the beef coconut curry, and while it was delicious, I felt that the portion size was a bit on the smaller side. The omelette with tiny bits of tofu in a sweet soy sauce. It was tasty, but I think a different veggie or side dish is more interesting if you’re new to Indonesian food. I’m generally dissatisfied when restaurants charge extra for rice, when the dish traditionally pairs with it. I find it very lame actually to charge for white rice.

Great food & cocktail options. Unfortunately the service is what I'll remember more. Some of the staff seemed completely lost, which we noticed from the moment we entered the restaurant. Though all were very friendly it was a bit of a chaotic experience trying to grab the staff's attention and get our order in.

Nice and great Indonesian cuisine. It’s not the biggest place but cosy and when you eat more than enough space. The food is amazing, not extremely spicy and very tasty. The staff is friendly but can be more accurate. They are busy and that’s not always helpful. The kitchen is open so you can look into this kitchen but if you’re close to the kitchen it’s not the best place. The establishment has two floors and is in the centre of Amsterdam. A place to come back to.

The place is beautiful, but the portions are on the smaller end and thus pricy (or maybe normal Amsterdam price, not sure), and the food looked and tasted Europeanised. Which is fine and still tasty, but not strong enough for my liking. We ordered two snacks, two mains, and a bowl of yellow rice to share. The snacks are good, but tiny. The fried fish with dabu-dabu sauce was more fish filet with salsa, which was disappointing. My friend said she wouldn't recognise it as Indonesian food and I agreed. The squid was on the overcooked end. Our homemade lemonade did not taste like lemonade at all, it was very good though. Overall I wouldn't go here if I was hungry, but if I were nearby and wanted a nice place to drink and a little snack I would consider the place.

Lovely place! I’ve been here a couple times and it’s delicious every time. Vegetarian and vegan options are also great! The staff is also friendly and helpful. We did go on a relatively quiet weekday but we had no complaints about service. Also, because of the sharing concept portions are a bit small but it’s really not much of a problem if you’re a group and everyone’s trying everything. No complaints really from our end :)

UPDATE 23 and 28 August: We brought our cousin and friend to Amoi. My friend had a dinner request before going back to the 🇺🇸: Indonesian cuisine. Where else would I bring him. On both evenings we had different dishes. Both of them were happy. Especially my friend who loves Indonesian food, was very ecstatic and enthusiastic. When I was there on the 28th, it was really good to see Karina again. She understands what hospitality means. So the service was way better and warmer than the 23rd. We really missed Karina during her holiday. But she made it all up to us. Hopefully auntie Nettie will be there next time when we have dinner again. ------------------------------ UPDATE 13 July: Visited Amoi with my family. An updated menu with some changes here and there. My cousin and his wife found it tasteful and enjoyed a delicious dinner. Nice to see Aunt Netty again. And dear Karina was also there to serve us along with her awesome colleagues. There was an accidental mistake made with the bill. Karina was very attentive and acted promptly. This saved us €100.00. Thanks for the good care and friendly service. See you next time! ------------------------------ UPDATE 26 May: After a long time, we visited Amoi again with our guest. We had planned to eat elsewhere but ended up here. No regrets at all. **Food:** The food is truly delicious. We ordered two types of vegetables, sate kambing, ikan pepesan, ayam goreng, rendang, and emping. We enjoyed it thoroughly! For dessert, the men had ice cream and I had cendol. No regrets there either. **Staff:** We were served by a Romanian young lady named Karina. What a sweetheart and so spontaneous. She did an internship in a hotel in Bali for six months and already speaks Bahasa Indonesia fluently—hats off! Karina addressed and served us in Bahasa. The rest of the staff was also incredibly nice. The bartender prepared our drinks wonderfully. I had a gin kelapa, which was delightful. 🤭 The men quenched their thirst with a beer or two. **Restaurant:** A cozy restaurant with a tropical decor. Amoi is definitely recommended. Next time, we will try Daalder Streetfood. **Location:** Easily accessible by public transport. On the way back, we walked, which was good for digestion..

Yelp
This was my first time trying Indonesian food, and it was fantastic! We were happy to see the menu was available in English, and our waitresses spoke English as well (since we are not Dutch). They gave great recommendations, as well. The ambiance of the restaurant was fun and eclectic. I was so happy to see a whole vegetarian section. The peanut sauce from the gado-gado was my favorite hands-down. I also really enjoyed the tofu skewers, even though everything I tasted was amazing. I wished I could have tried more dishes because of how good everything was! The drinks were also tasty. I had a mocktail, which I believe was the BERBUSA PIR. My husband ordered an alcoholic drink that was great as well.

Yelp
We got takeaway from here today for the first time. It was fast, courteous and quiet delicious. I can't possibly fully judge a place with a takeaway meal during a national lockdown though. I've walked by this place 1000's of times since it's at the end of the block of my Amsterdam apartment. Since the pandemic, it has been closed to indoor dining more than it has been open. I regret not popping in there for dinner when I had the chance. It's a vast space for Amsterdam. The front door is blocked with a table, candles and menus. Technically masks are not required outside, so if you're inclined to go maskless, this is more convenient. It's a very busy sidewalk during the day, but at night, not so bad. My friends were very satisfied with it too. They are smaller portions (by the sight) but they fill you up in a hurry! It was superlekker. I definitely look forward to exploring their menu options here. I can't believe I didn't try them sooner!

Yelp
Amazing rice dishes. A grilled sea bass dish must have been an error, it was too hot to eat.

Yelp
Our group of seven enjoyed a wonderful dinner, celebrating our two week bicycle loop around the Netherlands. Service was impeccable, friendly and professional. We started with different limpia snacks, then selected about seven different dishes (ordering two of each). The eggplant and the chicken satay were particular group favorites. The beer and wine list is small but carefully chosen. The Romanian Pinot Grigio and a local blond beer were excellent. Highly recommend eating here. Reservations are recommended

Yelp
Amazing Indonesian cuisine in Amsterdam. Wide selection catering to vegetarians and all dietary requirements. The staff are super helpful with selecting dishes. It has a cosy atmosphere and won't break the bank!

Yelp
We had some krupuk (crackers), sea bass, fried noodles, spring rolls and mixed satay, followed by the spectacular mixed dessert platter. It was all delicious, although some of the crackers could have been a bit crispier. Service was excellent, ambience great. Including the bottle of Viognier we had with it and coffee afterwards it came to about 40 Euros a head. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
Amazing food. Probably one of my favorite meals in Amsterdam so far. Was told by the server that the dishes are rather small and intended to be shared. For two people, it was recommended we get three or four dishes. Quite honestly, the dishes were pretty big in size and left us feeling nicely full with leftovers to take home. Must get the chicken thigh satay seekers. Come three per order, served with peanut satay sauce on the side. Absolutely delicious! Juicy, tender chicken well seasoned and perfect to appease any appetite. My favorite of the night was the chicken noodle soup. Bowl of soup came piping hot and full of shredded chicken on top of clear glass noodles. Garnished with fried shallots and scallions, each spoonful was full of flavor. After a long day of site seeing, this soup hit the spot. So incredibly rich and homey, yet light on the stomach. Honorable mention was the seabass prepared in banana leaves. Beautiful dish, heavily seasoned with herbs and spices that gave it a sweet curry-esque flavor. Best paired with white rice to soak up all the saucy, spicy goodness. Beautifully presented in the banana leaves it was steamed in. Well priced restaurant with amazing food, great hip, intimate atmosphere and awesome staff. I love this place and would love to come back if i ever come back to amsterdam!

Yelp
Excellent food service and atmosphere. We were recommended to this place by a local and man are we glad we asked the right person about Indonesian food! First we had a great server who really helped us through the menu. Not having much experience with Indonesian, the help was much appreciated. GET THE YELLOW RICE! It rocks. So glad we went with that. It has coconut milk and turmeric in it and some other yummy-ness, but it was truly amazing. I don't remember the dish names, but we had a spicy beef, a sweet sauced chicken and green beans with fried tofu. They were delicious! Now personally, I don't like sweet sauce on meat, but my wife does and she loved the chicken. So I can't ding it for my personal dislike. But I loved everything else. Also, I ordered the first cocktail on the list which the server said was also the most popular. Again, I don't recall the name, it was a Danish name, but a really delicious drink if you like it on the sweet side. All I All, we'd come back here again and again. If we only we lived here. :-p

Yelp
Amazing Indonesian food. Everything we had was absolutely delicious, service was great, and I had to say, their tropical house playlist was fire!

Yelp
We went to this place purely by chance on our 1st night in Amsterdam. The food and service were both so excellent that we returned tonight for our last dinner before flying home tomorrow. And the food is priced very reasonably. Moreover, they'll give you a carafe of Amsterdam's excellent tap water at no charge! The place is hopping from 8:00 on, even on weekdays. So either go early or make a reservation! We're sure to return and send all our friends here whenever we or they visit Amsterdam.
