This space used to occupied by an old slice joint, but after renovating the space it looks like they kept around a few signs from the old place as mementos or trophies of war. From what I saw of how this places operates however, as opposed to most of the new pizza places opening in this area of Brooklyn, thankfully its the former. Its very homey inside, and they even had a kids' menu with a large mom-and-kid clientele to match. The menu was basic with only pizza, salad, and pasta, but had a good mix of basic and more ambitious options. The service was very friendly and relaxed, with the owner front and center but not lording over things. I loved this place as an establishment, and thankfully the food matched up.
The pizza I got was called "Will to Live" This was worth ordering if not only for the epic receipt I received at the meal, as it was labeled on there as such. Anyway, it had fresh mozzarella, shallots, pecorino romano, blood orange slices, and watercress. While this sounds like one of those pizzas that a chef might think of when he's high, it simply worked. The crust was a great example of the Roman style: thin and crackery, with the end crust having some nice softness to it and a bit of char too. The mozzarella, romano, and shallots blended together beautifully, and were subtle and delicious. The watercress added a little pepper in, and the blood orange brought it all together. The bittersweet juice combined perfectly with the rest of the ingredients. The biggest reason I'm not giving a better rating is because the blood orange slices were cut way too thick on average, and there were far too many of them. They were overwhelming things, so I ate some of them off and we were good. . Cheating notwithstanding, this was still a great combo and a great pie, and thus worthy of the rating.
Instead of super pretentious pizza restaurants, this is exactly the kind of simple places that need to open in New York because they will resonate with the local populace and thus do well. I'm also glad to see a Roman pizza place that represents the style well, as this is only the second I've found thats even worth mentioning. Very strange, seeing as pizza al taglio is similar to our grandma slices, and Roman pizza bears a resemblance to Staten Island "old-fashioned" style pizza. Suffice to say, this place is a winner and I will be back.
