The Best Cups of Hot Chocolate in and Around Boston

"With shops on Newbury and Harvard Square, Amorino is best known as a gelato shop, but the hot drinks are a sleeper menu that would be a shame to miss. The thick, rich original hot chocolate is made with Italian chocolate, but the real standout is the gourmet hot chocolate, topped with whipped cream, coulis, and crunchy candy pieces." - Tanya Edwards, Eater Staff

Hey, the kid inside you will surely love this place ❤️🙌. Amorino Gelato is one of the best places I have been to around Boston which impressed me in the first visit. The gelatos are not only tasty but super cool in the look too. The best part is watching them prepare one 🥳. I had a blast and would be visiting this place again for sure. My personal favorite, Coconut and Tiramisu, are delicious and mouthwatering. Highly recommended for all ages.

Google
This place is too hidden! It's a shame because the gelato is amazing! This place should be packed 24/7 but you can't even tell it's there. I had the Amarena & Pistachio cup and it was absolutely delicious. We will be back.

Google
Delicious! You worry that when something will be so cute that it's gimmicky or won't taste great. Not the case here! Absolutely delicious and beautiful! The marscapone fig and coffee are delicious. And the macarons on top, adorable. Highly recommend.

Google
They shape your ice cream into a beautiful flower, which makes it both delicious and Instagram-worthy! What I love most is their wide variety of flavors, from classic favorites to seasonal and exotic options. Every visit brings something new to try, and the quality is always top-notch.

Google
Absolutely love this place! Their gelato is incredibly tasty and rich in flavor—truly some of the best I’ve ever had. It’s become my go-to Boston landmark; I bring everyone who’s new in town here, and they always end up hooked too! The variety is amazing, with flavors sourced from around the world that really highlight a celebration of natural, authentic taste. My all-time favorites are the mango and blue raspberry cheesecake—both are bursting with flavor. If you’re a coffee lover, you must try the tiramisu gelato. You can taste the richness in every bite. Beyond gelato, they also serve a great selection of drinks and Belgian-style waffles that are to die for. And their presentation? Absolutely beautiful—every detail is thoughtfully done. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a sweet treat or to impress a guest with a local gem!

Google
4.5 stars good gelato with some decent vegan options. Place is packed and obviously loved by many. You order from touch screens but can ask for taste samples beforehand. Staff is friendly. There is seating deep inside.

Google
Really enjoyed our gelato. Went late night after seeing a show, so thankful they are open late. I loved the macarons on the gelato, and the cones come with flower shaped gelato. My bf got affogato, which is his favorite.

Google
Good gelato in a small and somewhat cramped location. I found the ordering process fine, and they got my order out very quick. Convenient location if you are on newbury street

Yelp
Its been a while since I been here and they have self ordering kiosks now. The place is still a bit small with minimal seating compared to how popular it is. The gelato is amazing as always and their waffle is very yummy. The waffle is freshly made so we did wait a long time for it to be ready. Overall this is one of the original and popular destinations for gelato. They have their iconic rose shaped gelato but this time I went for just the gelato instead of the visual appeal haha

Yelp
This is what dessert my daughter wanted for her birthday after our dinner at Beacon. This is a little walk down the road and if you aren't looking you'll miss the place. Signage is small and the entrance is up some stairs. Walked in and the male staff were so focused on the girls in front of us that it was annoying. The small talk and lack of focus so that we could get in and out. We didn't realize that you place the order at the kiosks down to the right of the entrance and it wasn't until another staff member, female, let us know. Placed our order and waited. When you get your gelato in a cone, they made it look like a flower. Good stuff!

Yelp
Hands down the BEST gelato I have ever had. First, when you walk in you're greeted by a friendly crew of staff. They allow you to sample the flavors you want but what I found to be efficient and stress reducing is that you then order your gelato on their mobile ordering kiosk station things. I loved this because it actually alleviates so much pressure of having to remember your order and be put on the spot to have a clear cut answer. I went with the regular cone of up to 4 flavors and was able to pick my flavors calmly. I had the dulce de leche, blueberry cheesecake, pistachio, and coconut. The coconut had flakes infused into the gelato so it was double coconutty. To my surprise, the pistachio flavor was probably one of my favorites and really enhanced the flavor of the combo I had. It was nutty, it was creamy, and it was a bit salty but also sweet. The dulce de leche was good. The blueberry cheesecake was also "berry" great and creamy (pun intended). The portion size was perfect--not overwhelming but also not too little--although it still leaves you wanting more at the end cause it's that good. The prices were average. I paid $8-$9 which is about the same price you'd pay at most places. I had this cone to go but if you are looking to sit down, there is a cozy looking dine in area tucked in the far right of the place. It is on Newbury street so needless to say, parking isn't the best but my friend and I parked near BU for an event and then Ubered here. If I am in the area again, this will be on my "to go" list.

Yelp
I was walking around Boston and stopped in this cute, little gelato shop! I think parking could be challenging to find. There was a short wait and I got a cone with a single scoop of coffee gelato. The price felt a tad high for the quantity, but they do shape the gelato like a rose which is a unique twist!

Yelp
Came here for a sweet treat after a Red Sox game! It was late and pretty crowded but the kiosks to order yourself make it go quickly. It was a nice summer night so lots of people were eating outside along Newbury but there are some tables in the back to sit at. The gelato itself was super yummy I ended up getting a few sorbet flavors that were really refreshing! So glad I got to try!

Yelp
From the outside, Amorino Gelato looks like a small shop, but the inside has a lot of space. Walking in, I was greeted by the worker asking if I wanted to try any samples. I tried some and decided to get the mint chocolate chip and yogurt in a mini cup. The gelato tastes like any other gelato place, and I would say that it's less creamier than most. Most of my cup was also yogurt, so it was more 75% yogurt and 25% mint chocolate chip. I do appreciate the kiosks so I don't feel rushed when ordering too!

Yelp
My family and I were visiting Boston and we stayed on Newbury St. We found this gelato shop and went every single night we stayed! The gelato was amazing, and so were the macarons. It is a casual little shop with tables inside. The service was quick. We loved it!

Yelp
Food: good selection of gelato, I loooove gelato, it's my ultimate weakness. My friend and I were walking around town in Newbury St, he suggested we grab some dessert. Despite it being November and way too cold and windy for this socal gal, I couldn't say no to gelato haha. Together we shared red berries, chocolate, and hazelnut in one big cup, with a cute touch of chocolate macaron on top. I just wished they had a little stronger flavor profile, like a little stronger darker chocolate, a little stronger tart berry, a little stronger nutty hazelnut. But all in all, still a great experience and satisfied my craving, well worth the cold fingers and some shivering that ensued Price: small size was $5.25, class size was $6.45, and large size was $7.55, which are all reasonable in my opinion. I went with large, go big or go home hehe Ambiance: cute little dessert shop, warm and cozy vibes, slightly cramped and narrow in the entrance with the glass gelato displays. In the back, there is a space for about 4-5 small tables and seats Service: no issues, the person taking my order was nice and let me try different gelato flavors before making decision Parking: my buddy and I ubered and walked around downtown Boston area before going into this store. I am not sure, but the neighborhood seems busy and crowded without much parking space. All the streets were full and I didn't see any nearby public parking lots, good luck haha

Yelp
Amorino is a long time favorite and the gelato is still excellent after all these years. However, the line management and ordering system at this shop was a fantastic mess!

Yelp
When I came across Amorino Gelato, I knew I had to try some. This looked like fancy Gelato shop one might find in Venice. The inside is small, but the variety of gelato flavors is anything but. They were even offering samples. The flavors are innovative and they also have sorbets. I got the caramel, later I thought I should have gotten Dulce de Leche. There was a problem. The servers behind the counter are there to hand out samples, they don't take orders. They have around five self order screens. You must order your ice cream on the screen, then they will scoop it up for you. This machine wasn't user friendly at all. I was getting two cups, one chocolate and one caramel. I hadn't even touched the screen, it was adding a vanilla cup to my total. It kept doing this. I was getting pretty frustrated, until I called one of the servers. She came over and said "that's weird", and she charged me for the vanilla, but handed me the caramel. This caramel gelato was absolutely heavenly. It makes me think of the shell of a creme brûlée, in ice cream form. Their other flavors sound delicious also. They need to do something about the ordering system, getting the ice cream took a lot longer than it should have. Amorino Gelato is a sweet spot in Boston.

Yelp
Amorino's is located in Harvard Square and Newbury St. in Boston serving a variety of smooth, dedadent gelato and tasty macaron flavors all built in the shape of a rose on a cone Some of my favorite gelato flavors include tiramisu, dulce de leche, blueberry cheesecake, and good ol' chocolate but if you're feeling fruity, they have a lot of refreshing flavors like strawberry, mango, blood orange, lemon, lime, and passionfruit I tried their hot chocolate and although I wouldn't recommend it, I love bringing friends here for some good gelato, especially on a hot day or a summer night

Yelp
Saw a line outside of this place and was craving something sweet, so decided to check it out. They serve many kinds of gelato, gelato drinks, macaroons, gelato on waffles, and more! Prices aren't too bad, small starts at around $6, and they are $0.50 more if you want a cone. One weird thing is they make you order and pay before getting to sample any flavors. I get it, they don't want to just hand it out for free, but if I know like a flavor, I would buy a larger size. I didn't think it was weird at first but thinking back it was a little odd that they do this...ice cream places don't do that. I ended up getting a small chocolate hazelnut which was so fricken good. I wish I got a larger one but again, I paid for it before I tried it. But yeah, it was really good. They also put it in a cute flower shape, and to my knowledge you can pick more than one flavor for your order. I was also surprised at how packed this place was considering it was a cold winter night. Not an empty seat in the house...must be a local favorite. Will be back when in the area.
google avatar

Alison M.

Yelp
Their menu looks wonderful (pricey but quality) and I was inside browsing and looking over the flavors during a lull and the gal behind the counter actually screamed at me for my ticket. When I said I was browsing and hadn't purchased yet she loudly and rudely told me she wouldn't help me until I had a ticket. I had some questions about the flavors but after that I wasn't spending $10 on ice cream here so I immediately walked out. Nope!

Yelp
Great spot for picturesque gelato. While the hype for Amorino has gone down, there are still sometimes long lines and the prices are relatively high. This is special gelato- fancy gelato that have to be scooped a certain way to get just right. It is good- don't get me wrong, but since trying it once I haven't gotten the itch to go back. 4 stars bc I feel bad doing less but it's a very touristy location.
google avatar

Yelp
Solid gelato spot! Fun novelty items like gelato macarons, waffles, gourmet cups, shakes, and more. Not cheap though, big macaron was 7$ but my brother said it was worth it! They make the gelato into a flower which is super cute. You can order online on a tablet. Friendly employees!

Yelp
Unfortunately, we weren't able to visit this place in person but nevertheless it didn't stop us to place an online order to get it delivered to our hotel. I was surprised how well it was packed. Their to go boxes for the cones and ice cream looks so pretty and fancy. Just the packaging itself makes you very excited to have your first bite of their gelato. We ordered strawberry, coffee and chocolate gelato. It was so good that we couldn't stop eating it! The gelato is velvety, creamy, flavorful and not too sweet at all. You forget that it's gelato as it's so light. Our kiddo was so excited to have a cream cone without leaving the house!!! 5 stars all the way!!!
google avatar

Flora L.

Yelp
Compared to France, Spain, and Portugal locations that I've been to, this is smaller but has a variety of flavors to choose from. Entrance is a bit tricky as it feels like you're going to someone's house. When you enter, you order at the counter and then you can pick what flavor you want. You can try as many flavors as you wish but just be mindful of the line behind you! I got a large with 3 different flavors (dark chocolate, pistachio, and chocolate hazelnut). So delish!!

Yelp
We came in on a warm day and luckily the line wasn't too bad when we walked in, however, once we paid for our gelato the line was going out the door. Service is alright, I can see how this place attracts tourists due to the attractive gelato rose that everyone takes pictures of on the way out of the shop. They have many flavors to choose from when you walk in, and I am impressed with how they can layer on the ice cream to look like a rose. After quickly taking pictures of the gelato, it soon started to melt and so despite the pretty picture, it felt like I wasn't getting much value for $10 for such a small cone. We just happened to walk in at the right time, but when we sat down at a table to enjoy our gelato we could see that the line moved quite slow for the long line out the door. Personally this spot still seems like a tourist trap that has not died down or lived up to the hype and will probably not come back.
google avatar

Nishanth D.

Yelp
One of the best gelato, it is usually crowded and there's a line. But if you get a chance to sit and eat, a nice cozy place. Good range of options or flavors for the gelato. Their milkshakes are also quite good. My favorite is the hazelnut.
google avatar

Jenn L.

Yelp
Hella small location, best time to come would be at night as you'd have a better chance at having a table. We ordered four different flavors: mango, passionfruit, mint choco chip, and tiramisu. Ordered a shot of macchiato as well. The mango was my fav. Tasted like you're eating an actual mango. Smooth and flavorful. Definitely give this spot a try if you've never been, though it truly is a tourist trap...lol
google avatar

Connie L.

Yelp
A little pricey, but the gelato rose has plenty of icecream. Got the smallest size which came with two flavors and a macaron on top. The chocolate hazelnut gelato was my favorite but the blueberry cheesecake didn't taste that strongly of cheesecake (more like plain vanilla with some blueberry purée swirled in). The macaron was a bit too sweet but the texture was spot on. Service was pretty good, I'd only suggest they re-organize the line because it does wrap oddly so customers walking through the door would accidentally cut the line.

Yelp
I became a fan of Amorino once I visited in New York and I guess it's a chain around the east coast. Not only is their gelato delicious, but it's also aesthetic. They carefully craft each order with petals of your desired flavor and the service is wonderful, both apply to every Amorino I've been to. In addition to classic gelato flavors, I've found Amorino has tasty specials which allow room for exploration with fallback options as well. You're not limited to just one flavor either, so it can be fun to match flavors and see how they pair, for future reference of course because you will be back. Blueberry Cheesecake - I've gotten this at every Amorino and it's my foundation here. Love cheesecake so obviously I can't skip it. While there aren't any cheesecake bites, the overall flavor cheesecake with a hint of blueberry and they've been consistent across the board. A must have for strawberry cheesecake lovers, which is a more standard ice cream flavor.
google avatar

DeeShawn R.

Yelp
Extremely popular, small, and busy. There is absolutely no space up front and insanely hot standing in line. I feel like the line is set up backwards. There are some settings like maybe 5-7 seats if you can catch some open Although they do fill the cups, it's pretty pricey. Customer service is also just ok. Ordered a mango and a blueberry cheesecake flavor. Liked both and had good flavor. Although the cheesecake one wasn't much cheesecake flavor. It was good however.

Yelp
If you water it, it will grow. On a rainy night in Boston, our hearts rose with the flower gelato at Amorino. While the ambiance was bit cramped, this Boston staple allows us all to tap into our inner iPad kid: no face to face contact for ordering required. Instead, happy introverts and confused extroverts alike can punch in their orders at the nearest screen. I liked the array of options were available - something for everyone with flavor mixes, toppings, even ice cream macarons. However, the steep prices left the lily in our pocketbooks a wilted. But all in all, 4 stars

A C.

Yelp
Great gelato ice cream taste and a variety of flavors to select from. The gelato here is good, freshly made. I like the flower style they do for the ice cream, it's a very nice touch. I have been here a few times and the service is truly a hit or miss. Some of the servers and cashier's are very annoyed at times and constantly rude to customers asking them to move up or down, looking annoyed if you're not ready in seconds to order, or stare at you til you're ready to order. Other times, servers are really nice and friendly. It really has been a hit or miss for me and sometimes makes me not want to go back. But, the ice cream is good and the location is great if you're already in the area. They also have plenty of seating and public restrooms which is nice.

Yelp
Had a variety of different gelatos! The presentation of the rose gelato is picturesque. I recommend going on weekdays lunch time when it's not crowded.
google avatar

Brooke C.

Yelp
I got the signature in a size large and it was delicious. My gelato flavors were strawberry, mango, and red berry. I got the raspberry flavored macaron on top. This was very tasty and I liked the choco cone it came on as well. Figuring out how to order was a little bit tough and the inside is very small/hard to navigate. Still the desserts are so beautiful and delicious that it was very worth it
google avatar

Hursuong V.

Yelp
I recognized this chain from Italy! Solid gelato although pricey (compared to regular ice cream and prices in Italy). You can get as many flavors as you want, no matter what size you get. I really liked the chocolate hazelnut, as well as the coffee - the flavor was strong. I should have gotten it in a cone had I read the reviews! One of the few places open late on Newbury St. so there will be a surprising amount of people even on a weekday night, mostly with college students. I love kpop but kpop blasting in the background didn't seem to match the vibe. The server seemed to be rushing me, even though I was the only one in line when I went...
google avatar

Monica L.

Yelp
love this place! the shop itself is tiny and crowded, especially on weekends when the line is long, but the service is speedy and friendly and they let you sample flavors! the gelato itself is sooo good. it's rich, creamy, and each flavor I've tried hasn't disappointed. They are strong flavors that taste natural rather than artificial and even the small cup is more than large enough to satisfy the after dinner sweet tooth. I personally really liked the hazelnut and blueberry cheesecake! every so often I gotta come here to get my gelato fix
google avatar

Janelle L.

Yelp
GREAT ice cream. The coffee was my favored by far. With the signature you can get as many flavors as you want! Service was efficient and fast. Cute little dining area inside but only 5 tables so it's small!
google avatar

pantea T.

Yelp
PERFECT! Ice cream tastes AMAZING and each flavor is really rich and real! Service and ambiance is perfect too! Try this place!!
google avatar

Grace L.

Yelp
Hot chocolate was very thick and creamy and gelato was delicious. Personally, I thought the macarons tasted like pure sugar and little flavor.
google avatar

Joey W.

Yelp
One of the few things open late on Newbury St so I decided to stop in. Amorino is a solid gelato chain. I got the gelato in a cup but I should've gotten it in a cone because I love how they make it into a rose. Pistachio - super creamy and solid pistachio gelato. Tiramisu - the chocolate crisp was really overwhelmingly rich so I wish it didn't have it. It was definitely more chocolatey than tiramisu. Blueberry cheesecake - super creamy and loved the streaks of blueberry compote. The blueberry added a nice contrast to the cream cheese.
google avatar

Jordon S.

Yelp
It was great! They had a lot of great flavors to choose from. Loved the salted caramel, coconut, and hazelnut chocolate. Now, I wouldn't go out of my way to come back, but it was really good. Service was pretty slow.
google avatar

Cathy M.

Yelp
My daughter and I had gelato at Amorino Gelato on Newbury Street. What a delight. Best gelato we ever have.
google avatar

Angel P.

Yelp
Good gelato and dessert spot in the Back Bay. No matter what size you get, you can get as many gelato flavors as you want. I got mango and banana; interesting combo, I know. Both flavors were good and not super sweet, which I like. It is pricey, even with the small size but it makes sense as you are in the Back Bay. There was a line outside the door but workers are efficient. There are very few tables outside.
google avatar

Diana L.

Yelp
Always see a line out the door so decided to go one day that my friend was in town. Many many flavors to choose from and different ways to blend different flavors (in a cup, on a cone, they do that popular flower where every petal is a flavor). Hazelnut gelato is my go to so went with that. It was yummy. My friends enjoyed the pistachio gelato. Staff were friendly.
google avatar

Bill G.

Yelp
I took a group of eight people here after a business dinner. The line was out the door, but we waited. When we all got outside, I asked, "was it worth the wait?", they all agreed YES. Great selection of flavors. Each cone is really a work of art. The employees really are artists. Definitely a go to spot in Boston.
google avatar

Kyle G.

Yelp
Wanted a quick bite of Gelato and wow this place was packed out the door. Waited for about maybe 10 mins and had ordered a classic cup with 4 flavors and a macaroon. The hazelnut nut and the milk and chocolate were the best. Wanted to try the blueberry cheesecake but for my cup that was the majority even though I had 4 other flavors. Had the vanilla macaroon and it tasted very plain. But I can't hate since it was a quick bite.
google avatar

Rojein M.

Yelp
Super cute store, a little small and packed, but staff were very nice even though it was still super busy at 10 pm. They gave samples and recommendations, and the gelato was very good. Good stop for a date night or with friends, worth a try!

Asad A.

Yelp
Delicious gelato, can get multiple flavors in one cup. Staff was polite and friendly.
google avatar

Ken C.

Yelp
high yield alert Wanted some dessert after dinner nearby so we decided to hit up this place. I got a small with scoops of hazelnut and dulce de leche. It was so amazing - super creamy and not overly sweet (unlike a lot of American ice cream). I was really savoring every spoon. Interestingly enough, I felt very satisfied with the small size because every bite was so creamy and delicious. Highly recommend, one of the best gelatos I've had. Def on par or better than the gelatos in North End. Tip: Unlike other gelato places, you can have as many flavors as you want regardless of size. Technically speaking, you can probably ask for a molecule of every flavor, but at some point you would probably be unable to distinguish them depending on the resolution of your taste buds.
google avatar

Sally A.

Yelp
Visited for the first time and ordered a gelato shake. We picked the chocolate flavor as the basic/plain flavors are pretty limited. With the line being long and the gelato drink being almost $10, I had high expectations. It was definitely not what we expected. Flavor wise, it was just okay, but it was super watery and not necessarily a shake. It's also a small cup. I ordered a shake from shake shack across the street and it was definitely a better choice. I'd stick to ordering regular gelato and not the shakes for this place.
google avatar

Lana E.

Yelp
I had the BEST gelato of my life here. They offer their gelato in cups, cones (arranged like a beautiful rose), on waffles and crepes... it's absolutely delicious. Their flavors are made with all natural ingredients. My cone consisted of hazelnut chocolate and strawberry gelato. This location was on Newbury Street which is the perfect place! The line was out the door but went fast. Once you get in, it's pretty much a counter and you make your way from right to left and back out the door. We all LOVED what we ordered. I wish they'd open up shop in Orlando.

Kin C.

Yelp
A really nice spot in the Back Bay! Good ice cream with a unique presentation. It's a bit crowded at times but worth the visit.
google avatar

Andrea D.

Yelp
This place is great! A lot of good flavors to choose from! There's options to have as many flavors as you like in your cup! I got the amarena & dulce de leche in a classic size cup. My only suggestion which is why I gave 4 stars was the size. My picture isn't showing how small a classic size is lol. There was also a long line to order. The place is small as well. Otherwise it is awesome and friendly staff to match! I would definitely return!
google avatar

Sania M.

Yelp
Always so good and definitely a stop for me wherever I travel. The macaroons particularly our delicious. I say if you have not been here get the flower. You can try up to 4 flavors with it and it's so pretty too!
google avatar

Valerie Y.

Yelp
The most aesthetic, tasty dessert whenever you want to treat yourself! I love coming here for the rose gelatos. The fruity flavors are SO GOOD and fresh -- my favorites are raspberry and mango. I usually also get chocolate as a third flavor to balance out the fruit. I love how you can get as many flavors as you want so if you're adventurous and like a mix of flavors it's perfect! The ultimate treat would be to get the macaroon on top but I haven't gotten that yet. Prices are steep but worth it for a tasty treat.
google avatar

Eve Neider N.

Yelp
Gets very busy, but worth the wait! Many different flavors in gelato and sorbet, bonus is that they make it into a pretty flower if you get it on a cone! Line moves fast but it is tight. Prices do look like a lot but most gelato prices are like this. I wish they had a vegan flavor in the gelato. I got blueberry cheesecake and caramel both were delicious!
