Solid local Sammy shop offering classics. Order 3 half sandwiches to get a fair sampling: Italian, meatballs & Cuban. All were excellent, but Italian was clear winner. Sat outside and enjoyed the weather. Highly recommended

So much to love about this place. The jalapeño spicy gardenia mix on the classic sub might be one of the best things I’ve ever put in my mouth. The bread used for the roll is crispy on the outside and fluffy and pillowy on the inside…. absolute perfection. The shady back patio with all of the plants was a perfect backdrop to enjoy this 10/10 sandwich experience. Highly recommend!

It’s not worth it $14 for a sandwich with one small piece of meat and a bag of chips save your money and just go somewhere else. Order my food at 11 o’clock Says it will be ready at 11:12 I go to pick up my food and they say oh well unfortunately we have a big catering order so all orders are gonna take longer. To me that’s unacceptable. If you have a large catering order, you should be reaching out to your mobile orders and letting them know that Instead of waiting until they show up. If you guys not realize That people come here on their lunch break with only 10 or 15 minutes to spare. I didn’t end up leaving until 1130 with my sandwich that I ordered at 11 o’clock. But I get it. They’re just money hungry and it shows. Not having the same respect for one person versus a group order is just not a good Look. And I guarantee you, the owner is gonna come into these comments and not accept any responsibility but just combative that’s what they do here. I’m not really understanding why. But I won’t make the same mistake again. They should be ashamed to serve food that is looking like this. And don’t even get me started on the fact that it has no flavor at all. You can honestly get a better more flavorful sub at Publix.

This places reviews are very misleading. I moved here from Charleston and was looking for a good sandwich place. I came across this place in my brief search, and wish I would’ve kept looking. The sandwiches have maybe one or two pieces of meat and for the price is insane. Only thing going for them is their cute logo.

Solid local sandwich shop! Went for lunch at noon on a Saturday and there weren't many people there, but the lunch rush did pick up around 12:30. Staff were very friendly and helpful, and food was ready in good time. There is seating indoors and outdoors on a nice garden patio for those who want to eat in. FYI, bottled water ($.95) is the only option for water. Ordered a half Italian sub and a half cheesy meatball sub, both with potato salad. Sandwiches were a generous size (a full would easily feed two), ingredients were high quality (especually the bread), and the potato salad was some of the best I've ever had!

This is one of my favorite places in Birmingham! The sandwiches are delicious and the staff is so much fun and kind!! We love to eat outside on the patio. It's so great!

Sandwiches are good, bread was a little though. But the prices are a little out of control, 45 bucks for 2 Sandwichs, 1 bag of chips, and 1 potatoe salad. So Ampersandwich replied, I got 2 FULL sandwiches from publix for 22.98.

This has become my new favorite lunch spot. I got the Italian sandwich and the flavors all go together so well. The bread tastes great, and it has the perfect hint of spiciness. My order was also ready very quickly after ordering online. I highly recommend if you have a sandwich craving.

The bread is soooooo chewy and delicious I got the Italian for my first time and loved it. I always get all the toppings and half sandwich (and still can eat only half in one sitting). The person behind the counter helped me decide what to get, and I'm happy I followed their recommendations. No such thing as too much pickle, I got the pickle beer and chips! It's the first glimpse of fall, so I enjoyed the cool weather on the patio. It's mostly covered and I sat in the cushioned bench seat. Parking was a breeze on this Monday afternoon.

I am NOT a sandwich girlie but this place is amazing!! I was so torn on what I wanted to order. I debated between the Italian, Cuban or the club. I went with the half club and it was sooooo good!!! This sandwich paired nicely with spicy dill kettle chips. The staff members were hardworking & helpful. I will definitely be back here whenever I'm in the mood for a yummy , delicious sub sandwich with awesome bread!!! The vibe is casual so you can kick back and chill inside or on the outside patio.

This was my first trip to AmperSandwich - It will NOT be my last. I was very impressed. We were in a rush, so I had to get a couple of sandwiches to go. We got the Hot Pastrami and the Italian, I told the guy making the sandwiches to make them like - he likes them-...DONT SKIMP. Both were delicious and have all the classic ingredients plus their own pickled veggie mix. The Italian is the most popular sandwich and was very good. As was the Hot Pastrami, it was also delicious and also popular. They have their own pickled veggie mix that really works well on their sandwiches. I'm already looking at the menu again to order - enjoy

This is my second time visiting here, and I figured out the perfect order! Once again staff was super friendly, and my food came out pretty quickly for only having one person on staff. It has a very laid back vibe with some cute cats that will visit you on the patio. I ordered the buffalo chicken salad which was packed with flavor, and the half sandwich is the perfect size for one person. The blue cheese makes this chicken salad sandwich really stand out. I also tried the potato salad which was delicious, but I think could have had a little more seasoning. Luckily the bacon added a punch of flavor to it.

The food was great. The service is perfect and ambiance was chilled. Tasty sub couldn't go wrong with a good Italian sub.

I've heard such great things about Ampersandwich and was excited to finally visit. The store is near downtown Avondale and has plenty of parking. The inside is small, but cozy and the staff was quite friendly. I kept my order simple this time with a turkey and cheese sandwich. The seasoned peppers were my fav element but the bread was a bit harder than I prefer. I also tried the potato salad and enjoyed it!

Enjoyed the fried SPAM banh mi, and my fellow diners had good things to say about the Italian and a regular turkey and cheese. The bread was a highlight for all of us, and the regular was plenty for lunch. Would definitely come back.

I found the experience to be a mix of highs and lows. The sandwich I ordered was satisfactory but lacked distinct flavors that would make it memorable. However, the bread was a standout--fresh, hearty, and clearly crafted with care. It's tough because the bread that makes it--like all truly great sandwich shops. The ambiance of Ampersandwich is inviting, and the staff is attentive. Given the quality of the bread, I believe there's potential for a more flavorful sandwich experience in future visits

Y'all, One of my customers told me about the restaurant and said I must give it a try. Well I am here and I ordered a club sandwich all the way. The bread was soft and the toppings on the sandwich was delicious. It's a small quaint restaurant with a good size parking lot. They also have outdoor seating right next to an event center so if you're sitting outside you can hear the music. It's a sweet peaceful place. I also had a Grapico and Vicky's BBQ chips to set it off. So if you like a good sandwich stop on by.

Seriously fantastic sandwiches. I made a pit stop in Birmingham for lunch on a long day on the road, and I was shocked how good this was. Really fresh and flavorful ingredients, made with care and attention, and really nailing how a sandwich should be constructed. The mac salad was fresh and excellent too. Nice, chill staff and ambiance too.

Went here with a friend for lunch the other day and was pleasantly surprised. It had popped up in some recommendations, but had never went to find it. It is located behind Avondale Common House, so it can be hard to spot if you aren't looking for it. They offer a variety of sandwiches, both cold and hot, as well as some bagels - the pizza bagels did look interesting - but I ultimately had to go with one of my favorite sandwiches, the meatball sub. I will say, a half sub will fill up most people, especially if you get chips with it, unless you are just REALLY hungry. They do not skimp on the size of their sandwiches. The meatball sub was good. The meatballs were flavorful, and the cheese was plentiful as well. My only nitpick would be that it could have used a tab more sauce - but again, that's a nitpick. My only warning is that if you're getting a drink, don't assume they have drink fountains like other restaurants. I ordered a water, but was not told that I had to get a bottled water. A heads up would have been nice. If I had known that, I would have ordered a soda instead.

This place has a wonderful concept. The sandwiches are made with lots of love. If you haven't tried them what are you waiting for get in there and try them out ASAP

I should have visited this place before this week. I've been missing out! I only ordered whole Italian sandwich to go. I did ask to substitute chipotle mayonnaise for the chipotleless mayo. That worked out nicely. The bread was how bread should be, fresh and toothsome. There were generous portions of cold cuts, fresh and flavorful toppings and a dill pickle slice that took pride in being more than "just" a dill pickle. The standout were the tomatoes. Going to whatever lengths that it takes to get REAL red ripe tomatoes in April in Alabama is impressive! Somebody is serious about their tomatoes. I'm sure getting those hard, mealy, pink, flavor free greenhouse tomatoes is unavoidable in December. We all know that there are times that it's not unavoidable in Birmingham AL and yet they still do! I think greenhouse fauxmatoes in an Alabama summer has got to be a sin. How it didn't make the Ten Commandments, I don't know. (Maybe it was number eleven?) We should pass an ordinance or something. While we're at it we should ban selling iced tea without the option of a slice of lemon punishable by law as well. Selling fries when you know you are out of ketchup as well. I'm going back to Ampersand because they recognize that what ingredients are does not matter as much as the quality of those ingredients is. Is that so hard?

A great classic French bread sandwhich shop. Wonderful portions. Hearty meats. Warm cuts, cold cuts. Their topping selection is A+. My favorite is the spam banh mi. I'm a sucker for those pickled veggies.

I couldn't believe I had never been here before. I was getting my food to go and got a half meatball sub. It was amazing and had tons of flavor. I want to go back soon so I can enjoy the lovely outdoor patio.

Yes. Yes yes yes yes yes. Visited for the first time today and was really pleased. Tried the Italian (great), the meatball (delicious), and the roast beef (unbelievable). I almost offered another roast beef to go. That's how good the sandwich is. Great bread. Fantastic, plentiful fillings. All that and that good good potato salad with the bacon and ranch-y dressing. Make it a part of your rotation. And take advantage of the outdoor seating, where you can listen to all the musical happenings next door at Avondale!

We came for a unique sandwich experience on our way through town. We were so glad we found this place! Quick counter service set up with about 5 or 6 tables. The drink options were bottled/cans in a case. I was happy to have a Fresca The fried spam bahn mi and Italian was soooo good! Kids got a nice toasted ham and cheese. Only regret is not trying one of the sides.

My wife said, "Let's go get a sandwich from a new place called, Ampersandwich." I looked it up on Yelp as I always do and saw great reviews. Off we went. This is a little sandwich place that make every sandwich to order. As we walk in, I see something that was not on the menu. A Meatball sub. SOLD. It reminded me of Growing up in Long Island NY and getting the same thing. My hopes was it was just close. The hardest part is the bread. They get their bread from a local baker, and it is very good. Then comes the meatballs. Really good and I was not expecting that. It takes real talent to make great Meatballs. Finally, the sauce known as Italian gravy. Great sauce however, very spicy and hot. Just like I like it. Some folks that don't like spicy will not like it. As I was ordering the Sandwich, I saw cookies. I want for it. Crispy and good. All in all, great place for informal dining. I highly recommend it and will be back. Eat, Drink and Live well.

YOU BREADER BELIEVE IT! I have been craving a good old fashioned sandwich. Not some slimy meat that is placed on a soggy bun and wrapped up nice and pretty. Those sandwiches had their days in the sun, but I was craving something a little more out of the box. Something that was hand crafted and had some character attached to it. I searched through my resources (Yelp & Google) and came across this small sandwich shop located in Avondale. Thinking I had explored all that Avondale had to offer, I was shocked to see that Ampersandwich was located in an area of Avondale I had not yet explored. It is located right across the street from the Axel Roe apartments and next door to Iron City Nutrition. (They are in the same building is what it looks like from the outside. The inside is very simple. It is exactly what you would expect from a sandwich shop. Counter service a couple tables on the inside and a back patio for you dog lovers to bring your pets. Simple and easy. There was a small section at the front of the restaurant for you to grab a menu before stepping into line. The menu is a one pager subs on one side, some salad options and bagel options too. For the sandwiches they have the option for you to get a half or a whole. Which is something noteworthy. Most of the time I have seen with a lot of the older generations and some of the young ones too cannot eat a whole sub/sandwich and would much rather share one or get a half. So giving the option for a half sandwich is definitely a nice touch. Bravo for that Ampersandwich!!! After you pass the menu stand you see a a row of coolers. These coolers mainly have coke products inside of them. But I also noticed some local beers too. Love the concept of coming in and grabbing a sandwich and a local brew. Then you are not only supporting one business but instead you are supporting two at the same time. When making my decision, I decided to get something a little different from what I typically get from a typical sandwich shop. As this was a new experience for me, why not try something out of my comfort zone. I decided on getting the Turkey bacon Avocado bagel. It was amazing. The flavors all worked so well together and the spicy mayo that they used on the sandwich really complimented the whole sandwich. I believe that the bagel they used was an everything bagel, not sure where it was from, but it had some good flavor to it and wasn't overly salty either. All in all this is not your typical sandwich shop. Its one of the hidden gems that Birmingham has to offer. If you have yet to check it out, I highly recommend coming in mid afternoon to grab a sub and a brew or two!

We stopped in for a quick bite on a road trip and couldn't be more impressed. The service was great and the man working was very friendly. Our sandwiches were amazing, and the bread is really tasty. There was great music playing and it was clean. I'll certainly be stopping back in any time I'm nearby!

Finally, a classic sandwich place in Birmingham! As this city tends to do, we're just now getting around to having places that others have had for decades. Went in on a Sunday for lunch and was blown away by my Buffalo Chicken Salad Sandwich. The bread was awesome, and the veggies were crisp and delicious. Absolutely can not wait to come back. If I had one criticism, I don't think there were multiple bread options on the menu, and we were just given wheat bread. It was delicious, don't get me wrong, but if I want the full sandwich experience that doesn't usually feature wheat bread.

First time experience here. Strait forward, no-frills sandwich shop with a laid back feel. Sandwiches were excellent. We had the Cuban and the turkey melt. Ingredients were fresh and delicious. Bread was fresh and moist. Definitely a repeat place for us.

This place is in a really good food spot with some good choices all around it so I was curious to see how it was setting itself apart. It's the fast service place (can be) versus the more sit down places in the area. The food is pretty good. Meatball was one of the best I've had. The pastrami was forgettable. You do get a LOT of food with the whole sandwich which is good, but very few side choices- basically bags of chips. My big drawback was honestly the service. The guy taking our order could not be less enthused to talk to us, was very short with everything... it was so weird like I didn't make him to come to work! I would come back for the meatball sub if I really was craving one but would not come back otherwise.

Very filling and delicious Cuban Sandwich. The pork was good and fresh cooked. Service was decent with good soft drinks to choose from, I got a canned root beer. It's right near Avondale Park, maybe a block or 2 away.

First off, the name is genius. Second, the sandwiches are great. I got the roast beef this past weekend, perfectly thin shaved pieces on Bandit-baked bread...I was reminded of the time Kramer put a meat slicer in his apartment because by slicing your own meat "it's all surface area, the taste has nowhere to hide!" He also said "welcome to flavor country" in that episode, which has me wondering if Guy Fieri should come clean about the origins of his slogan and stop impersonating Smash Mouth's lead singer, who still owes my friend money for mowing his grass in the mid-90s btw. Not cool Harwell, we expect that from Violent J, but not you. Oh, and the patio out back is super chill. Edit: My apologies to Steve Harwell, the guy who owes my friend money is the lead singer of Cowboy Mouth

They carry the best chips there. Voodoo is my favorite and ate it with the Bahn Mi. I highly recommend trying it. Don't let Spam scare you off because it's well balanced, and delicious. The parallel parking spots near the building are free to park in as well. The patio is gorgeous too. I cannot wait to have a party out there

Used to be my favorite spot for 2 years, but now charging me 5 dollars extra a sandwich to split. Used to come here every week. Watch out for extra charges.

We needed a place for a quick bite. This was the place. Sandwiches were delicious and like a mom and pop deli shop. They offer local brews as well. Recommend this place.

What an awesome sandwich joint. The menu has a little something for all sammie lovers. Bread, meats, veggies all on par for a great lunch spot. They have a Fun patio seating that is perfect for the good weather in bham. Glad to have them in the Avondale neighborhood.

WOW what a great sandwich. I got a small Club and it was the best one I have ever had. Many more ingredients than usual and it worked fantastic together. I thought the bread was over done when I opened it and I was completely wrong. The bread was perfection. This was my first visit and will not be the last. Reasonably priced for a good kicker.

So, ham and cheese sandwiches have been my favorite food since I was at least five years old. I've eaten many from many places. Good, bad, and just-plain-alright. Y'all. Ampersandwich's Hot Ham & Cheese is my favorite ham and cheese sandwich. The half is bigger than my forearm. Equally as awesome? The precious patio. It's huge. I ate outside during lunch, and I can't wait to come back in the evening after visiting Avondale Brewery next door. If you're visiting Birmingham, love sandwiches, or need food then eat @ampersandwich
