The 18 Best Cambridge Restaurants | Eater London

"Amphora is the new arrival that, in a small way, clinches Cambridge’s ascension as a food and drink city. It’s always had quality wine bars, especially the service side of the namesake Wine Merchants shop. But — perhaps, in part, due to the fact that the strongest cellars can be found not at restaurants or bars but at the university colleges — the city has been excessively allergic to widening its taste in wine. Step forward Amphora, medical science graduate Cong Cong Bo’s shop and bar named for the ceramic vessel probably most famous for its role in ageing Georgian orange wines. The bar boasts an impossibly, brilliantly broad list that spans Portugal, Georgia, Armenia, Greece, and Moldova." - James Hansen

Fantastic little wine shop. Don't be worried if you aren't a wine officianado, the lady will help you out and get some nice wines for you to try based on your pallette. I personally like sweet wines and I got a good selection to try including one off the menu. Small selection of snacks available. I loved the sweet ice wine, it was incredible! Will be back.

If you know nothing about wine, Cong will help you figure out what is to your taste and you'll leave with a bottle you'll love. If you know a thing or two about wine, be pleasantly surprised at the range of lesser-spotted wines from all over the world, with a particularly strong selection of old vines and wines from small independent vineyards. They also serve the largest selection of wines by the glass in Cambridge. And whatever your level of knowledge about wine, the wine tasting events are a great evening out and are made accessible to beginners while being an adventure for more experienced tasters. You should visit Amphora if: - You know little about wines and want to identify what wines are to your taste; or, - You want to buy a wine to impress at dinner; or, - You want to give someone a gift of a wine they will remember for its taste; or - You're fed up of drinking mass-produced supermarket wine lines; or, - You're a more clued-up wine drinker and want to try something new; or, - You've managed to get your hands on one of their wine tasting tickets! Most of the bottles range from ~£10-£35, though there are also fine wines priced above.

I popped in to get a couple of interesting bottles for a friend’s birthday and ended up staying for an hour. Cong’s knowledge is phenomenal and she’s more than happy to share it. As it was quiet, I was able to enjoy a small flight of three fabulous wines, which Cong let me taste blind. Although, I did not get them all right; all were delicious. There was then a fantastic wine selection to pick from and Cong talked me through the options: even suggesting a wine she does not stock as she cannot beat Waitrose on price: a refreshingly honest approach. I will definitely be back again soon.

Hands down the best wine bar in Cambridge and probably much beyond; supremely knowledgeable and helpful owner, excellent and large selection of partly highly unusual wines. Each visit a voyage of discovery, never disappointed. Can't recommend highly enough.

Very special place for wine in Cambridge with a superb, excellent and charming sommelier! Quirky selection of unreserved wines from underrated places at a fair price. On top, you can get to meet very lovely people there in a nice community!

This business goes far above & beyond a typical wine shop. This gem is not a place to pass by without a quick stop or wine tasting if you're visiting Cambridge. Cong is a wine connoisseur with a natural gift and an inordinate amount of knowledge to kindly share. Not only teaching her patrons about their wine selections but supplying them with an abundant variety of wine to choose from; many of which are uniquely selected and/or hard to come by. Servicing all types of customers from those who are lovers of wine, to those who know little to nothing. Cong can assist you in establishing what types of wines you may like via her "wine diagnostic." If you're a wine enthusiast, ever been at all interested in wine and/or you've been wanting to learn more. Don't miss out on this unique experience and check out one of her fabulous wine tasting sessions if you're in the area. You won't be disappointed!

This is LITERALLY my favorite wine tasting experience that I've had anywhere in the world. We stumbled upon this fantastic wine shop on our way to dinner one night - there were 3 of us with varying levels of knowledge and appreciation for wine. Cong offered us a "wine diagnostic" - we gave her some suggestions on either wine types or flavor profiles that we liked or didn't like, she asked some clarifying questions, and then she used her extensive knowledge of wine to pick wine tastings we would love. I know a decent amount about wine, and she selected my flight tastings perfectly - I loved her focus on lesser known, niche wines and all of them were to my liking. One of the people I was there with claimed to not even like wine, but after a wine diagnostic that took into account flavors he liked in other things, he found that he liked everything she presented him as well. Our group was having such an enjoyable time, we decided to do a second round of tastings, but Cong was concerned that we needed a palette cleanser between flights and brought out some delicious sheep's milk cheese. It was overall such a pleasant, relaxed, hospitable experience that I can't wait to return the next time I'm in Cambridge. This place is not to be missed if you are in Cambridge. Sit down with Cong, let her do a wine diagnostic on you, and relax with some of the best wine you'll ever find. Should you want to purchase a bottle, she has a large selection available at reasonable prices.

Amphora is definitely a "MUST" when you are in Cambridge. The proprietor, Cong, will guide you through a carefully curated selection of old and new world wines in a relaxed atmosphere where you can imbibe, learn, decompress, socialise or relax - it's up to you! There really is something for everyone here. I’ve enjoyed a glass at the wine bar where Cong’s “wine diagnosis” was spot on and she remembered what I drank a few weeks before - and more importantly, what I enjoyed. I’ve purchased lovely wines at price-points similar to the supermarket - and above - for enjoyment at home or as gifts meant to impress. This is also a great venue where larger groups of friends and colleagues can gather for various occasions. The wine tastings are not to be missed, as they are a great value for the wine and knowledge on offer. Book early (as seats fill up quickly) to understand why you do/don’t like features of certain wines, appreciate the chemistry behind wine making, and enjoy amazing pairings by a knowledgeable and charismatic wine enthusiast who is set on making sure you enjoy a lovely glass. Make sure to stop by Amphora!
