BLUF: A nice place to sit down for some good chat with your favorite people, but the cakes were nothing special. The ones in the cases looked nice, but the cakes were dry & unremarkable on the inside. The buttercream was kinda blah. Service was 50/50. First staff member looked really annoyed that we were asking questions about the goods & was not at all welcoming nor hospitable. The other who eventually served us was absolutely wonderful & quite the opposite of her co-worker. She seemed like a person who would go out of her way to make sure you left a happy customer.
While the cakes, cookies, cupcakes looked appealing & much better than I could ever create, they didn't seem as unique & tasty as you would expect a specialty bakery to push out. The cookies looked like those you could get at a supermarket but more expensive. The lemon blueberry cake that I had was bland, dry, and the buttercream filling was sugared out- gritty, dry, just sugary with weak flavors barely coming through.
While it looks like a nice little cafe you'd want to sit & enjoy, they don't sell slices. The small rounds & cupcakes are your best bet, but nothing like tasting an actual slice of their cakes. Based on the small, pricey mini that I chose, I'd not splurge on their full size cakes. As full size cakes go, the price seemed fair, but be aware that your cake may just be so-so. I've enjoyed more delicious cakes from a grocery store & paid less.
If you're in the area, need a break, want a cup of java, and have a sweet tooth, it's a decent place to try. If you want stronger coffee, Weird Brothers is across the way. There's also a place next door to grab a bite to eat. Should I ever go back to the Amphora diner, I'd probably have a slice of cake. Why? 'Cause it's just what you do at a diner! Maybe the cakes taste better after indulging in all the salty diner yums, but at this point, I'd find another bakery from which to purchase a specialty cake.
