To understand the whole picture I feel is important. First, I acknowledge reality, these facilities like hospitals is a business. It is always about the money and most staff are there to get a salary to survive. Understand many are govt subsided and it is not well decorated or equipped. It is not a hotel; private teaching hospitals are nicer. The food are not great, they are all standard; I knowing a director assistant myself at another nursing facility, and am told food are usually purchased from the same vendors in NYC. Don’t expect anyone will follow through or check in after being discharge, bed for next. They want easy cases; they want a patient in for profit and out once no money stops; this not a charity. Then there is an issue of short staffing. But this review is about the most important issue, how is the care. Most patients or guardians understand the more money the chance of better care and admit some patients are difficult. Highly note there are some staff at any place who genuinely cares and no matter how difficult the job, they like what they signed up for and their work. They are compassionate understanding, helpful, and professional. And yes they have their bad days and personal issues too but like a lawyer, one doesn’t take personal issues to court hearing; the lawyer just step way. I find a huge problem are the aids, nurses, doctors and case workers who are non-empathy, unhelpful, bothersome, abusive even, unhappy, rude, complaints to care givers/family/friends (complaining to colleagues is needed and therapeutic at times). Seems to me those feel like they are being forced into some factory line and then takes it off on others. To them I like to remind them perhaps, that job or position is not for them; and they need to find a different career. It is okay. we understand, it is not a fun and easy job dealing with difficult people. If an elderly is well and sane then they will not be in a nursing facility and the caregivers will feel less frustrated and more carefree. That also means some aids, nurses and case workers will be out of job too and facilities not needed. *I recommend not judging staff by its cover, you will be surprised who are not easy going; yes, some from day one reads ‘unreliable and out of touched’. I hope those who don’t like their job understands that one day it can be themselves or their friends/family members in these types of facilities or situations. It is not easy to for the patient or the caregiver either and you are their breakers. No doubt frustrating. One do not know what someone went through in life to make assumption why they behave they way they do. How would they feel if they were being yelled at or dragged or constantly bother like they could do anything when their minds confused? I think when hiring, if it is about ultimate caring facility then only hire those who really like social work and up for the challenge or maybe even those who has been through dealing with elder family members with issues; it’s not a bad idea to rotate staff annually throughout the system for their sanity. Understand elder and health care in America is negative. We do appreciate the staff members even security who are kind and patience I know Heaven notices them and to them I give stars.

My mother stayed in the rehab for as long as this deplorable institution could justify sucking her Medicare dry. Two weeks turned into two months. My mother was held hostage. She called me every day, crying and begging me to take her home. They only worked with her one hour a day, Monday through Friday. The rest of the time she had nothing to do and nowhere to go. The food was inedible slop. The only thing that kept my mother from complete despair was having her family and her caregivers come every day to visit and bring her good tasting food from home.

My experience with Amsterdam Nursing Home has been extremely disappointing. The level of care provided to the elderly residents is unacceptable and, frankly, heartbreaking. The meals are poorly planned and lack proper nutrition. Breakfast is just one small egg, half a piece of bread, and a small milk. Lunch consists of a chicken drumstick with a tiny piece of corn. Dinner is simply a sandwich. This is not enough nourishment, especially for elderly individuals who need balanced meals to stay healthy. What’s worse is the lack of basic personal care. Residents who cannot walk are left sitting in wheelchairs for hours without being changed. This kind of neglect is not only unhealthy — it's inhumane. It’s also nearly impossible to contact the facility. The phones are never answered, and you're always directed to a voicemail. Families deserve better communication and reassurance about their loved ones’ well-being. The environment is depressing, and it’s clear that many residents are not receiving the respect, dignity, and attention they deserve. I truly hope the administration takes action to improve the quality of care. Our elders deserve better.

During my father's stay at the Amsterdam Nursing Home, the leadership team was extremely responsive and intuitive to his needs. Any request or concern brought to their attention was addressed promptly and thoughtfully. The facility was clean, and the overall staff was satisfactory. I want to especially highlight the nursing team for their dedication and commitment to my father’s care—they truly made a difference in his experience. Thank you, Mosha, Raul, and Emily

I was a patient at Amsterdam House from 4/11-7/31. This rehab facility is horrible, it’s infected with rodents and the staff are highly unprofessional. The food is horrific, I got food that I had no idea what it was and when I could identify the food, I couldn’t eat it! Most foods were filled with garlic! For 3 weeks straight I got boiled eggs, stale bread and yogurt for breakfast! The only time I ate well was when it brought to me by my daughter! I asked to be transferred elsewhere and it fell on deaf ears. When you ring the call bell, it may take up to an hour to get a response and sometimes they don’t come at all. Medicine was never given at the appropriate times, I would sometimes get morning medicine at.noon, physical therapy was almost nonexistent and there were days when they didn’t bother to come and when they did, they stayed less than fifteen minutes! I had a cylinder frame on my left leg and no one knew how to clean the pins and only one person was willing to learn. The social worker Susan Perez couldn’t type a simple letter. No matter what you asked her, she never had a valid answer. With the exception of Veronica Epps, (nurse) cna Jacqueline, Swe, Whitley (no longer employee at Amsterdam) and Alma, the rest were lazy and lacked professionalism! My room was rarely mopped and the bathroom was filthy. Amsterdam has monies belonging to me and I’m getting the run around getting it back! This place should be shut down because it’s not capable of serving those who need rehabilitation! Rodents should never be in a healthcare facility. When you chose the healthcare field to be employed in you should have compassion and a high level of commitment to treating your clients well! The 11-7 pm shift should come to work with their pajamas on because all they do is sleep and talk on the phone, watch tv. This is unacceptable. I was depressed and frustrated my entire stay there If anyone ever needs rehab, go elsewhere! I’m glad I’m no longer there!

Amsterdam is great at taking care of patients. The staff is friendly and always makes sure you're comfortable during recovery. They respond quickly to any questions or worries you might have. The customer service is also really good, with clear communication and care that's focused on you. It's a great choice for anyone needing sub-acute rehabilitation

Amber Larsen

Google
Amsterdam is amazing! The staff, nurses, doctors, and housekeeping are all super friendly and really care about making sure everyone is comfortable. The place is always clean, and you can tell they really pay attention to every detail. It's a great spot for anyone looking for top-notch care during their recovery. Highly recommend!

Google
Absolutely Horrible Experience I would not recommend the Amsterdam Nursing Home in New York to anyone. My grandfather has been there for about two months, and the experience has been awful. The staff neglects basic care — they take over two hours to change him when he soils himself, which is unacceptable and inhumane. The way they treat him is disrespectful, and it breaks our hearts to see him suffer. Trying to communicate with the staff is another nightmare. I've called multiple times, left voicemails, and never received a single call back. It's like no one cares. We have even been struggling to get him discharged — they don't want to release him, and it's starting to feel like we're being ignored on purpose. Elderly residents deserve care, compassion, and dignity. This facility provides none of that. Please think twice before sending your loved one here.

Yelp
I enter to visit a friend who was recently discharge from a hospital to a short-term rehabilitation home for recovery and maintain self-management to regain physical, cognitive, and emotional functions affected by one's health condition. There are too many negative reviews. Yet many are accurate and truthful. I continue to despise hospitals including nursing/rehabilitation homes based on past experiences of family members and friends' insufferable inevitable demise. Amsterdam Nursing Home reception was stolid and curt when I check-in who flipped through some papers to locate his room number. I had to spell my friend's surname three times as the male front desk receptionist/ security guard is oblivious and inept of correctly locating to write his name. Furthermore, he mispronounced my own surname which is the easiest to pronounce!! There are no visitor badge or passes upon check-in and the front desk receptionist/ security guard will shout out "WHAT ROOM NUMBER ARE YOU CHECKING OUT?" which one visitor was exiting. I requested this front desk receptionist/ security guard to write down the room number on a flyer and upon my exit I submitted this stating "this is the room number that I am checking out." The reception and elevator lobby areas on the first floor appears home- ish with a traditional grandfather clock, sofas, and a family gathering common area. The medical care appears adequate as within mere minutes of my visit (I did not sit down) the staff entered ready to change his hospital night gown and possibly remove any soil on the bed. My friend stated the bed is better. The food is less humanity. "Tina, that is not apple juice- it is a horrible bad tea." I wonder if the patient care technician (PCT) bath my friend... I exited despondent and dispirited as my entire visit was twelve minutes.

David M.

Yelp
If anybody wants to be in a nursing home you shouldn't have never come here let me tell you a few facts about this place they have lazy nurses that doesn't really care about you lying up soil in your bed while waiting for death to come. For example I'm lying in the bed I just spoiled myself I pressed the button for a nurse nobody comes I came to this place last year it's 10 times worse than this year I called the social worker leave me a message that's all I'm living in hell. As far as for humanity is going out the window if you nursing home brother you're in trouble now without a doubt this place is a mess I like quietly for the nurse to come I'm videotaping the whole thing to prove one thing that this place is lazy

Yelp
We only stayed there for more than ten hours and left quickly. Don't go there because the service there will disappoint you and you will regret it.But the supervisor Oga is great!

Yelp
I agree with the other recent reviews here. Based on a friend's experience many years ago, we were happy my mother would have rehab at Amsterdam Home. But things have changed, apparently. While much of the staff seems dedicated and hard working, the fact that Amsterdam Home is advertising they are celebrating being the best nursing home in New York contradicts the reality, and rubs me the wrong way. My mother's insurance says she is eligible for many more days, but the staff is pressuring her, and seems to be working with an insurance rep, to change insurance or else she will be paying out of pocket much sooner than her current insurance is telling us. Seems like Amsterdam Home is in some kind of insurance scheme to earn money for their affiliated insurance salesman. In the process they are essentially wanting to push my mother out before she is medically ready. Made my mother with dementia and memory loss sign something she did not understand. Like other people say, they are impossible to get on the phone. Beware!! We are contacting our lawyer.

Mer C.

Yelp
The yelp and google reviews are dreadfully woeful and worrisome. IT seems they are under investigation by NY state as a poorly run facility. Some families complained about medication screw ups and legionaries disease! Others complained about awful inedible food and lack of diaper changing. I also saw many complaints that it's difficult to impossible to get anyone by phone. This is terrible. I'm so sad.

Phyllis J.

Yelp
terrible place inept staff dirty patients are ignored doctors and nurses do not see patients maintenance staff are the only staff that interacts with patients

Diane D.

Yelp
All I can say is, don't. You will never be able to reach any department. They don't answer the phone and don't return your calls. Dirty and understaffed. Staff are rude and impatient.

Frances D.

Yelp
I was recently a patient for 7 weeks at this facility.Note that earlier reviews, a year ago, were better! That bears out the rumors that the new managment lowered the standards and cut corners. Despite the valiant efforts of the nursing staff, too much went wrong, most due to understaffing. When I needed to contact someone in maintenance, housekeeping, recreation, laundry, etc. the nurse had to be the one to make the call. To get to the nurse,I had to go thru my CNA, who were caring and hardworking. but stretched too thin. I might ask my CNA to ask the nurse to contact housekeeping about needing toilet paper, but if another patient fell or the doctor needed them to do something, my request got lost. I was able to speak up and advocate for myself, and I found if I didn't lose my cool when I reminded the CNA, the thing eventually got done. I found almost all of the nurses very competent and conscientious, but they too suffered from too few CNA's to assist them. The PT and OT both were very good. I wasn't happy with my doctor, though our communication improved. As for the food, it looked OK but either had no taste or didn't taste good. However it was fresh, and effort clearly went into it. My appetite was a problem to begin with, so I lost about 10 lbs. There were activities every day, mostly geared to the permanent residents, many of whom had dementia. But students from Juilliard came once/wk, and I heard a really great singer. I think the recreation leader, Candy, worked harder than anyone else in the facility! I will never understand how management companies think penny-wise, pound foolish ever works, but I guess it keeps their Long Island or NJ lawns looking nice and green. Frances D.

Yelp
these are old reviews that are posted..look at the dates. I was there in summer and Fall 2022. The place is a hell-hole. Medical care is very poor unless you have a strong voice and can advocate. Food is less than human. I sat in my own waste for hours. The Director has no heart or soul. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE ps under investigation by NYS Dept. of Health for outbreak of Legionairres Disease..in all the papers..Patients NEVER TOLD AND SOME DIED. I was one of the luck ones.

Linda B.

Yelp
Any attempt to determine current condition of my resident relative was ignored; a request to have a Health Care Proxy completed was ignored. Multiple voice mail messages to the Finance person and to the unit's social worker were not returned. Overall, a very poor experience.

Mark M.

Yelp
My grandmother is here. I guess its ok as far as medicare/medicaid run nursing homes go. She doesn't like the food and you can never find any nurses or doctors on the floor. The orderlies and food staff are not the friendliest

Enrico P.

Yelp
I've seen a lot of nursing homes, and this one is one of the worst. It's a genuine hellhole. You may never get anyone on the phone, and there's a good chance they won't call you when your loved one falls out of bed and goes to the hospital. The second time our patient went to the hospital, we got a phone message that said 'This is Amsterdam Nursing Home. Okay thank you'. No information, and maybe 10 calls later, we reached someone who (eventually) was able to tell us what was going on. The food is like the slop from a giant bag on Orange is the New Black; our family member needed to eat a lot, and couldn't face it. The food we brought somehow disappeared after a day. Any medication prescribed 'as needed' never happened, as our patient was never checked on. We're not even sure the pain meds were administered regularly! Our patient didn't have a working phone or lights for days upon arrival. More than three days without LIGHTS. When the shared bathroom reeked like urine, it took repeated requests and several days to have it addressed. DO NOT USE THIS PLACE. Imagine having to put up a sign like this, telling your staff to respond to patients:

Yelp
This place is horrible. My mom had major bed sores while here. . The staff is rude and inattentive and extremely unprofessional. No one never knows anything and YOU WILL NEVER GET AN ANSWER when you call the facility or when you call the floor. The food is horrible . Don't let your love one have to go to the hospital they pack them up without calling the family hey kick them out and put someone else on their room/space. Horrible horrible experience. You can keep calling asking for answers and nothing . My mother been there three months with no progress they just want payment. These are names . Jason is one of the floor managers. Run! If you ever have to communicate or deal with him. He does not communicate well, he does not call or make necessary attempts to contact family in most emergencies. My mother went to the hospital at 10 in the morning and he did not call my phone until 6 at night and I live upstate. My job phone is provides. Forget about the social workers. Aaron! Never calls you back or provide ethical social work services. I had to hunt her down to get whatever little communication I did get. Take note to these names . Make sure you get everyone name you come in contact. Will definately be reporting their poor services look on my page you'll see other residents just sitting I. The corner being unattended to. Don't put your love one here. I'm in the process of getting my mom outta here.

Yelp
I am an RN I went to interview for a position in the dialysis unit The nursing care coordinator interviewed me and apologized for the low pay stating " u know. They're Jews" I looked shocked. She said " oh your not Jewish are u?" Yes I am Jewish! I left. It's an historical fact that people from the Philippines don't like Jews. They've said it to me many times

Dee M.

Yelp
Please do not send your relatives here. They may lay in their urine and feces for hours, the nurses are nasty when you ask them for help, and they probably will be served rotten food. Please go somewhere else.

Yelp
My father passed away in April 2020 from Covid while being a resident of Amsterdam Nursing Home (ANH). When I received a call from ANH informing me my Dad was not doing well they mentioned COVID. I asked if they would test him or treat him. The answer was no. I understand as that was the height of COVID cases in the city. When FEMA announced COVID-19 Funeral Assistance, I contacted ANH and was directed to contact the funeral director. The funeral director told me the doctor is the one who needs to amend the death certificate (DC). I first tried to contact the social worker at AHM but calls and emails were not answered. It was nearly impossible to reach ANH. I reached out to the Health Department; John Rudy pointed me to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) on April 1, 2021. When I finally reach Mary Delgado at ANH at the end of April 2021, she said COVID was noted on the DC but the doctor couldn't print his notes on the DC. Later I was told he didn't know how to change the DC. I reached out to the OCME. Robert Pelt from OCME assisted me and was able to reach Dr Bogdanov. On May 6, 2021 Mr Pelt informed me the doctor "would correct and change the cause of death on your father's death certificate to indicate COVID-19. He told me that he's going to call you as well". I never received a call. Once I got the new from Robert Pelt I reached out to Mary who asked me to call her back. When I did, she ghosted me. I had also reached out to NYC Council member Keith Power's office. Franklin L Richards tried to help me as I could not reach Mary. Franklin spoke with Mary in mid October and was told they (ANH) "unable to amend the death certificate mainly because there were other things going on with my dad." FEMA's guidance is such - the death certificate must indicate the death was caused by, may have been caused by, or was likely a result of COVID-19 or COVID-19-like symptoms. The letter may include similar phrasing. The doctor told Robert Pelt from OCME he would change the DC. Then he said he didn't know how. Then the excuse was there was a lot going with my dad when he passed. Give me a break. My dad was put in a SEALED metal box when the funeral home shipped his body to CA (to my gravesite) due to COVID safety concerns. ANH stole a lot of my father's belongings after his death. When they finally opened up in August 2020 we went to pick up the few boxes they had packed up from my dad's room. The boxes were mostly filled with clothes like underwear, socks, shirts. The expensive outerwears were not there. The TV I brought to my Dad's room was not there. His shaver and other things which were worth something - were all missing. I wrote a letter to the President and CEO, James Davis about this as it was disheartening that items were stolen from the dead, items that held precious memories for the family. True to their MO, I did not receive any response. The least they could do was to add "may have been caused by COVID-19". Those 6 words are true to the situation and could help my family. Yet they toyed with me and flip-flop with I don't know-how, yes and no replies. ANH is truly an awful place. As I read the review in the past 1-2 years, I realize how the place has gone completely downhill and I am not the only one suffering.

Yelp
My mother-in-law has been trying to come home the neglect that this staff has and their whole way of taking care of her is feeding her cold food putting her in with COVID positive patients and leaving her sit in cafeteria all day long in a night gown is NOT OKAY! Also since Saturday we have been reaching out with no word we need to get her out of there it's unfit for any senior citizen especially on Medicaid/Medicare!

Robert O.

Yelp
How nice of this organization for using up my 100 days allocated for my recovery from my insurance for 10 minutes Monday through Friday...never instructing me how to use the stairs. Now I am out of luck and must stay in my third floor walk up until 2024. I hope new patients choose another nursing home as my social worker at the hospital told me they should. Stay from Amsterdam Nursing Home as it run by uncaring (except for the money) Neanderthals.

Linette H.

Yelp
the social ser department is terruble they don't answer the phone when called. they claim they didn't receive your messages. the director is supposed to handle grevinces but she too is never around. the financial department milks your money and the food is harendously horrible. the nurses and nurses aids are overwhelmed with work and can barely give extensive care to the elderly that are somewhat incapacitated or very much dependent upon help from another. Di not leave your loved one here. you'll be chasing the carrot like a rabbit at a dog race due to the lack of informative information and if you're lucky to get someone you won't enjoy the song and dance.

Yelp
WORST COMMUNICATION EVER. Phone calls are not returned. Emails are not returned. I doubt I will ever see my brother in the foreseeable future. AVOID!

Yelp
Wish I could give this place negative stars. My father has been at this facility for the last few months after being in the hospital for rehabilitation. He had many complaints about the lack of staff, supplies never on hand, and terrible food, but managed because he just wanted to get better, so he dealt with the faults. They were releasing him yesterday and called me saying they can't get an ambulette to take him home to Brooklyn, so they were gonna put him in a wheelchair in an Uber. We live on a third floor walk up and he can't walk. He got home and couldn't make it up the stairs. I had to call an ambulance to get him up the stairs because I had no way of getting him into his apartment. After 2 ambulances and about 5 hours, they called the FDNY to come and assist in carrying him up. How can you release someone without making sure they can make it to their door? What were they doing in rehabilitation for so many months where he still can't even walk a few feet? This place is horrendous and I advise you to stay away at all costs.

Yelp
I've been struggling to give this nursing home facility a one or two-star review. Amsterdam Nursing Home was supposed to be the best nursing home in NYC, but there are very serious shortcomings to the facility. Do not be fooled by the nice architecture downstairs. My mother came here for a short-term stay of three weeks. She was brought on a gurney to the 7th floor which was rehab. Over the next few days, she was largely neglected by being left severely constipated, ignored and in severe pain. Furthermore, the alarm didn't work and her room was always cold. Some of the nurses were nice, and some didn't care about their jobs, even though there was a sign to remind them to take care of patients. In addition, her care was not particularly customized. She had a swollen leg and was only showered once a week in a general purpose shower. The nursing aid failed to put on her compression stocking, and when the nurse did put in on there was a scab on the foot. My mother became very depressed. It took her much longer to begin rehab because she was left weak and nauseated for the first week, and finally, when she got to rehab, the care was basic, with one of the rehab nurses spending more time studying cooking books on her phone I was expected that a nurse would regularly walk her. This did not happen, and she was left in bed most nights. Another issue came up when the supervising doctor did not allow her to keep her medical appointments which were planned over several weeks. Only one appointment was permitted, and two denied On the corridors, the nursing aids were supportive except very stretched. Family members have to advocate forcefully for their elderly parents; otherwise, they can be left unattended. The floor where she was located on was not always cleaned properly, and sometimes there was a mid whiff of vomit After a longer than expected recovery, she was finally released. Amsterdam is not suitable for short-term rehab.

Yelp
AVOID. AVOID. AVOID. I am a physician, a federal whistleblower, and a good son for my elderly mom. I am also a board certified public health physician. So BELIEVE me, there appears to be some sort of change management problem at this facility going on. It is NOT a place for the elderly or for any cognitively impaired rehab or NH stay at this time. It appears that either management or the building or the entire communications system has been undergoing an overhaul recently. While I did not expect 5 star level care at a Manhattan rehab facility, I never expected a nightmare of poor communications during what I hoped would be a routine rehab stay for my mom after she had several falls. From the first night, we were unable to contact my mom via the NH phone system, and for FIVE days we were NOT contacted by any physician. Since my brother is a hospitalist, and I spent a career in long term care, you can imagine our shock. We finally called our city council person, complained to the state, and then threatened legal action before I finally got a call from a Dr. Lansey. This physician appears to be the SOLE provider of actual daily medical care for a very large facility. Dr Lansey is probably a nice fellow and dedicated but probably could use another physician, or PA or two to help him out based on our personal experience. If a physician doesn't contact the family of a new rehab admit, who happens to be a confused elderly woman w/ a falls history, for five days, that's just not right. I'm sure that there are caring people in this facility, and the people running it probably mean well. Perhaps in a year or two they will get their act back together after they finish whatever transition is going on. The SW at the prior hospital had NO idea there was anything challenging or difficult at ANH. SO PLEASE BE AWARE ! AVOID this place for now for your elderly loved one, especially if there is any cognitive issue involved. Their visiting policy is Draconian and restrictive, their phone lines are being updated, the rooms are basic and dingy, and this is not a place for anyone to go who is limited cognitively or who cannot use a smart phone easily. Beware. ADDENDUM: ANH responded to my concerns and did provide good updates and care after I logged several serious complaints. They appear understaffed, with a messed up phone system. If you are patient and very solicitous and can deal with a very difficult visitation system, it's a 2nd tier choice because of the location. They could use covid staff volunteer additions on their nursing floors as the level of understaffing is known and discussed by the staff. Dr. Lancy is reasonable once he contacted me, ELSIE is a lovely nurse, and the SW did try to work with me assiduously. Again, I do not recommend anyone be sent there at this time who has any cognitive issues at all, or is in need of excellent communication and good staff:patient ratios. But they did try to improve thiings for my mom once I complained and brought my usual treats. MD MBA MPH MHA FACPM

Yelp
Several years ago I spent a month and a half here. Everything was fine. Several days ago, my cousin was admitted. For days, morning, afternoon and night I've tried to get his phone number. The operator tries to connect you to the nursing station. On the 26th try a man finally answered this morning. I asked for my cousin's phone number. He said to get it from his partner. I told him it was early and I didn't want to wake her. He said he would get it and call me within a few minutes. Four hours later no call. Next I called administration, Social Work, Human Resources and Administration. None answered. I thought there were some standards for these hell holes. Several friends who tried had the exact experiences. My cousin had been at several homes before and all were decently run. That I recommended him to come here is a shame I'll never live down. Stay away from this place./

Yelp
Amsterdam House is pretty on the outside and ugly on the inside. Everything negative you read is true. Stupidity galore, disorganized, incompetent and dishonest doesn't even begin to describe the horrible experience my mother had in this place. She left here emotionally and physically bruised and traumatized. They told the family she could walk and she couldn't even stand, she could barely sit up. The place reeks of insurance fraud and they vilify the residents to cover for their countless mistakes. Lack of communication with family members, nobody was taught how to answer the phone, the food is inedible and the staff is rude. Did I mention they lie, lie and lie again?! Run in the other direction...

Yelp
My Grandmother was placed into this rehab center after surgery which required high care and lengthy recovery. This center was terrible for many reasons: 1) the nurses are not very attentive, a family member had to be with grandma at ALL times due to this, we didn't feel comfortable leaving our grandmother alone. 2) the "physical therapist" was very rude and unprofessional at times, she tended to make comments that weren't funny and offensive such as, "was your grandma showered?" (Because she smelled) 3) they do not answer phone calls so getting in touch with loved ones/nurses was IMPOSSIBLE. 3) The food given to patients is not very great 4) going back to nurses, I didn't see passion and care for what they do, that is something that is very important to a recovering patient, I think that a rehab center is supposed to make them feel welcomed and plays a enormous role in how efficiently they recover. I simply do not recommend.

Yelp
Most nursing rehab's in NYC are crappy, and this one is no different. I have been trying to get in contact with a social worker regarding my client for two weeks now. I have left messages for the SW and the director of social work, and still nothing. I'm in the process of going above both of their heads. Communication is always important, but during times like these, it's critical! I can't go into the details, but please know that they are making it difficult for my client to get the care needed. Please steer clear of any nursing home if you can, but definitely steer clear of this one!

Yelp
HORRENDOUS. I would give negative stars if it were an option. I echo so many of the terrible reviews here regarding overall care while a resident/patient here, but I also have something to add. My grandma was given her second covid vaccine TEN DAYS LATE. Even though we called, emailed, and friends that lived nearby came and advocated for her, and we were given false promises over and over again. Ultimately we had to spend a ton of money and hire a patient advocate to help get the 2nd dose finally administered. She was discharged two days after, and because Covid(Omicron) was raging at the time, we believe she contracted it about 5 days later when she first ventured out, and ultimately died about two weeks later. A TERRIBLE SUFFERABLE DEATH. We will never know if she would have stood a fighting chance had Amsterdam House given her her second dose on time. A SHOT. A widely available covid vaccine. ONE SHOT, and my grandma might still be here. I believe Amsterdam House, including the administrator(well aware of the situation), has some responsibility in her death, and I will go to my grave with the firm belief that they have her blood on their hands. If you love your family member send them them anywhere but here.

Yelp
Being sent to Amsterdam Nursing Home for rehab after breaking my right shoulder and left elbow in an accident was like being sent to hell. The staff was totally unresponsive. The food was completely, horribly inedible. The doctor was absolutely scary. When I was admitted for a broken right shoulder and left elbow, they wanted to give me a wheelchair and a diaper, even though I am strong, can walk 5 miles easily, and am definitely not incontinent. I am certain that pneumonia was already present when I was released from Mt Sinai West. Two days after I arrived I was having trouble breathing and I had fever. Since nobody comes when you ring the call bell, I walked out to the desk about a half block from my room and said "I am having trouble breathing. I need to see a doctor." The attendant said "There is no doctor here at night." I said "Then get a nurse. I need help" And she said "If you really couldn't breathe, you wouldn't be standing here talking to me." When I refused to leave, she eventually called a nurse from another floor. She gave me oxygen I needed to be able to breathe and checked on me several times during the night. In the morning the staff physician, Dr Lansky, came in and said, without examining me, or asking me what was wrong, "You need to go to the hospital." I said "Yes!!!! I do and I'm taking all my stuff because I am never coming back here." I called my family to tell them I was being taken back to the hospital and they raced in from New Jersey to meet me at Mt Sinai West. I was admitted with pneumonia and a partially collapsed lung and spent the next 8 days recovering. After that I went to Village Care Rehab on Houston St. Compared to the hell hole Amsterdam House it was like a resort. NEVER let anyone you care about be sent to Amsterdam House.

Yelp
This nursing home displaced almost 100 of their residents to make room for Corona Virus patients - poor management decision and poor leadership. The home has had a persistent roach problem and the social workers are particularly checked out. I would not recommend this location. Food is also sub par, lobby staff are unprofessional and items were stolen from my grandmother's room on multiple occasions. I wish we knew before placing our family member there.

Yelp
Unfortunately, I agree with other reviews of short term rehab here at Amsterdam. I can't get out of here fast enough! I am supposed to get 2 PT sessions per day for a total knee replacement. Yesterday, my first day here - no PT evaluation or therapy. I was evaluated by an OT - which was unnecessary - who took my walker away from me & told me I'd have to use a wheelchair until I was evaluated by a PT. This was after 4 pm yesterday AFTER the PT department was closed for the day!! I'd been walking at the hospital with a walker for 3 days prior to rehab. I was also evaluated by a speech pathologist for swallowing & to test my cognition!! Again, not warranted. I am a 68 year old woman who was placed here for orthopedic rehab - not an evaluation for a nursing home placement. There was absolutely no information in my chart that would warrant these evaluations. Makes me think they did these evaluations solely for monetary reasons. Today I had a good PT session with a competent therapist. But, he had to physically hold an ice bag on my leg because he told me they usually use a gel pack for icing but the gel pack must have gone upstairs with another patient. Seriously??? They only had 1 gel ice pack in the place??? And I only had one session when I am supposed to have 2 per day - no explanation given for the missed session. The PT also promised that he would inform me today of the time of my sessions tomorrow & Sunday. He also confirmed with the charge nurse that he would visit my room before he left today to give me my schedule. He never showed up. The food is horrible athough I give the dietician much credit for trying to provide me with fresh food that is edible. The door to my room has to be propped open with a garbage can or it will close shut. The nurses & aides are wonderful & have been very attentive & responsive to my frustrations. I wouldn't recommend this facility to anyone for rehab & will definitely not come here after my second knee replacement ! I will also be informing my surgeon about my experiences as he recommended this facility.

Yelp
It was medical advised that my mother needed rehabilitation in order to go home after being in the hospital for three weeks. I am allergic to nursing homes services. I was unsure about the quality care of the place. Many social social-workers just give you a list to choose the place without caring if the place is good or not. They do not give time to shop around and search a little deeply. sadly for all these places patients are only numbers. My mother was not able to walk. My sister and I spent all and every day by my mother's side in the nursing home since the first day. My mother in her second day in the facility, the night shift nurse or assistant got upset and scream to my mother when she requested for bathroom assistance. We did not complain because we were afraid that they would hurt my mother. The food was the worse on taste and quality. Their website promote nutritional and attractive meals performing by nutritionists. It is far from what they promote. I am sure that dogs will not eat the food they provide. I heard many resident complaining about the food all the time. My mother is diabetic and she needs to keep a special diet. I was surprised when I saw the kind of food they brought it. Breakfast two slices of white bread, scramble egg, apple juice, black coffee, Lunch a hotdog, apple juice, and for dinner fried chicken, french-fries, corn, apple juice, a piece of chocolate cake. I was speechless, especially having a high glucose level a day before which was more than 300, We had to bring home made food every day. Those weeks were extremely stressful and the worse experience by leaving my mother alone at night. I dropped her food every morning before I went to work and security used to call upstairs for someone to pick it up the food for my mother but you can die waiting. I feel so sorry for those elderly residents that are left alone and they do not have no-one to advocate for them. My mother had diarrhea twice and I have to ask if they can give me something to avoid deshidratation. The nurse just gave me a ginger ale. I was disappointed So I went to CVS to buy pedialyte, chamomile tea and club soda. Patients come to die here. The room and bathroom were never clean while my mother was there. Especially if the space is shared and we are facing a pandemic. I tried to send a complain letter after my mother was discharged, but no one picks up the phone and when it is picked up they hung up refusing to give the right department to complain. I had an issue with my mother's medication because the nursing home kept a month of her medications. Insurance did not want to refill her prescription it was too early. The insurance's representative called AH and no one answered the phone. Prescriptions went to AH I was advised to go back to the nursing home to get her medications, but when I got there I was informed by the nursing home employee that medication and prescriptions were returned to the pharmacy and pharmacy reported that they never received anything and by safety drugs are nonreturnable. All nursing homes put profits before people.Google how many nursing homes are like churches in every corner? Never trust the care of your loved one to a nursing home or hospital. Always stay close to your family member if you want them to go home alive.

Yelp
A simply horrid facility. I recently visited a friend there who has dementia. She had been wheeled into the dining hall, and was awaiting her lunch. She kept insisting that I bring a tray that was sitting unattended over to her. I wasn't sure if that was her tray, but I brought it to her, and she immediately popped open a protein drink and started drinking it. The nurse saw it and yelled at me for bringing it to her. I apologized, but she continued to yell at me. Then she tried to pry the protein drink from my friend, who was clearly agitated and wanted to hold onto it. The drink went flying all over the place. This nurse's attitude was unforgivable. There was a better way of dealing with it. No regard for the patient. And each patient was left alone, sitting in front of their little tables, with little attendance and zero empathy. A simply depressing and unprofessional facility.

Yelp
This place should not be open...my dad had a massive stroke and was sent there for rehab after a week at Lennox hill... Amsterdam house starved him and dehydrated him and ignored a serious infection that set him back and left him on a breathing tube in the icu...thank God mt Sinai is across the street...DO NOT send anyone you actually love here!!

Yelp
My mother is a resident of Amsterdam NH, and has been since 2018. The staff are gentle & kind to her. It's hard to institutionalize your love ones, but she is doing very well since she was admitted. My family are very happy with her care and state of mind. I am grateful to Amsterdam & their staff.

Yelp
My wife unfortunately had moderately severe Parkinson's Disease but she was able to walk with a walker. Then she got covid pneumonia and was hospitalized for close to 3 weeks. This, of course made her Parkinson's much worse and she really couldn't move at all. She went to Amsterdam House sub-acute rehab. The PT and OT didn't help her in the least (it is a difficult situation) but since we took her out of there and hiring a PT and OT who treat her twice a week each she has made a lot of progress as opposed to the daily therapy she was getting at the nursing home. Even worse than this is that she entered the nursing home with a stage 2 pressure sore over her sacrum which deteriorated to a stage 4 under their non-care.

Yelp
HORRIBLE place, terrible care! No one answers any calls. Social workers do not return calls. My 95 year old had to do everything for herself during the day because nurses were not available. She got her cold coffee every morning by 11 am. Sham on Cornell Medical Center that they are still referring clients to this horrible place.

Yelp
I was the Power of Attorney for my uncle, who was a resident/patient there for more than four years until his recent passing. While the nursing care was excellent, the administration and finance people are horrid. They were difficult every step of the way. They only care about their income. When my uncle dies, not only did they not call to inform me, their sole interests were to demand that we arrange to remove the body, and that we disconnect the phone service so that they could accommodate the next resident. They are awful to deal with and I will recommend that Medicaid examine their practices.

Yelp
_Rehabilitation:_ excellent _Nursing home care:_ good and the staff is NICE to the patients _Hospice care:_ look elsewhere. They use the services of New York Hospice and the coordination between the staff of NYH and ANH is poor.

Yelp
If there are people in your life that you care about, don't send them to this facility. Where do I begin? You may be fooled by the nice lobby, the fish tanks the piano player when you take a tour- make sure you go to the floors where the residents stay for both long term and sub acute rehab. There's a reason private rooms are always available at this place. The care is atrocious. I don't know if the staff doesn't care about the patients or that they are overworked and spread too thin. Our family member had a personal aide with her daily and she was still unable to advocate to get her cleaned up, fed, properly cared for or even out of bed to sit in a chair. Another one of our aides came in one day to find her slumped in the corner alone head dangling off of the meal tray and a totally mess. She had a UTI the entire time she was here which the doctors refused to treat with a broad spectrum, instead making her suffer uncomfortably and wait 6 days for a the culture to come back which would explain what type of bacteria she had. At this point she was dehydrated, very uncomfortable, and honestly neglected. We immediately took her to the hospital seeing the state she was in and the odor (!) that was coming from her body. The doctor even said that he basically didn't have faith in their facility to treat her and we should just go to the hospital. What a joke. Honestly I think she would have died if we didn't get her out right then and there. The hospital we brought her to straight away started her on a broad spectrum and IV since she was so dehydrated from lack of care, which is what the facility should have done. She has almost recovered now and we thought she was about to go to hospice if that gives you a mental image of how bad it got. Never Mind how hard EVERYONE is to get in contact with, from the nursing station to the doctor to the social workers it was a royal mess. It would take days to get a call returned. Our aides said they've never seen anything like this in their career. I'm mortified we subjected our poor family to this quality of care and so happy she is now at a SNF where her care is paramount and we know she's actually being looked after by competent people. God help anyone here without family or an aide to watch over them. Seriously.

Yelp
This is an addition to my review of last year. I again had to go into rehab this June, but my choice was Mary Manning Walsh at 72nd and York. The physical therapy was wonderful there, one whole floor is dedicated to gym and other rehab procedures and is clean, bright and state of the art. The lower floors is the nursing home and there are 4 or 5 floors solely for rehab patients, most rooms being single rooms. My floor the 12th was being constantly cleaned. The food was just as bad as Amsterdam but the staff was wonderful with state of the art computers. If rehab is needed, forget Amsterdam and go to Mary Manning Walsh. The facility is run by Arch Care which is The New York Catholic Archdiocese, but is really non denominational.

Yelp
If your hospital wants to send you there for rehab, run the other way. Very poor care, poor pain management, terrible food and they do not provide special diets for diabetics even though they claim they will,

Yelp
Worst facility ever!!!! They should lose their license and go to jail for what they did to my aunt. They have zero regard for patient care and the staff there are criminals and unresponsive. I had an elderly aunt there in rehab for a broken pelvic bone. She was drugged with trazedone all day long, they shut off her phone so that she could not correspond with the outside world, and they had her sign over her supplemental insurance plan while she was medicated out of her mind. They canceled her insurance so they could bill her directly and make more money. The social worker Maz was absolutely useless and responsible for fraud and patient abuse. All they cared about was taking her money and getting her into their nursing home permanently instead of rehabilitation to get her home. We had to call 911 to get her out of there and back to hospital so we could transfer her to another facility. Avoid this center at all costs!!!!!

Yelp
I was in the adult day care program for six months. Eventually I left due to their persistent medication errors. During the period I attended, I was physically threatened by another attendee (male) and always felt a bit unsafe after that. The only action taken by staff was to move me to a different table in their roach-infested dining room. It was also quite a shock to overhear my case being discussed in the elevator by medical staff. How mortifying. This elevator, obviously, was being shared by staff, patients, and even visitors! At least I had advance warning that a request I had made was going to be denied, and I started thinking about dis-enrolling from the program right then and there. Now, even months after my departure, I am stuck with a nightmarish tangle of insurance errors and bills for thousands of dollars that I should not be receiving. I have e-mailed, phoned, and done everything short of a personal visit to get this straightened out. I gave two stars in recognition that some of the staffers are good, kind individuals whose acquaintance is a pleasant memory for me.

Yelp
Interactions with Amsterdam likely occur at incredibly difficult times when families are dealing with loved ones who are ill and unable to care for themselves. We were very unhappy with the treatment we received at Amsterdam. My mother needed care and was routed there following a hospital visit. It is a gloomy place that is poorly managed and understaffed. Do not be misled, this is a profit making, revenue driven institution that efficiently exhausts every penny of medical coverage from the government or insurer. Their primary goal is separating you from your savings. Their staff gave us conflicting and flawed advice, assuring us that care and services were covered and then... after relying on their assurances, set their finance department on us to collect out of pocket. Please be aware that we were not Medicare HMO, or Medicaid savvy and instead of their helping us navigate, they sent confusing and poorly drafted CYA letters which ultimately resulted in our our coverage lapsing and only after it was too late, came after us for services which should have been covered. A difficult and vulnerable time was only worsened by our being dunned by aggressive and rude personnel from their finance office. It ultimately cost me tens of thousands of dollars which should have otherwise been covered. I subsequently learned that they bill lower amounts to govt/hmo then to private payers so it is to their financial benefit to bill you retail....

Yelp
I don't write a lot of Yelp reviews, but this is a very important decision for people to make. I visited 3 nursing home/rehab centers in Manhattan - Amsterdam was the most geographically inconvenient for me to visit. I relied on what I saw and on the information on Medicare.gov, and I'm so glad I picked Amsterdam. Outstanding physical and occupational therapists, 7 days/week. The same PT and OT during the week, who worked magic with my mom and got her to a point I did not think possible. My mom received excellent care all around, including the doctor, nurses and aides. The facility may not be newly renovated, but it is kept very clean. Everyone on the floor makes it a point to get to know not only the patient, but the patient's family. Thank you so much for the great care you provided my mom.

Yelp
Was a post surgery rehab patient in 2018 and still grateful for the wonderful care I received. Came in minimally able to walk and deep open surgery wound needing frequent wound care, left climbing stairs, NP. PT and OT, Gym staff, compassionate, competent and went the extra mile, taking into account my preferences and goals. 12th floor RNs, LPN and Nursing Associates compassionate and skilled. Wish I could remember more names. I will shout out Claudette Edwards, superb nurse;in every way; what a difference she made in my healing! Dr. Lansey, hands on, the highest standards of care, felt like a life saver! The social worker also supportive. Front desk staff always nice, recreation staff brought in very good entertainment. Nursing Directer listened not only to praise but solicited areas for improvement. Only suggestion is for evening/night float staff to be even better prepared for patient care details. Maybe unnecessary number of swallowing evals, but S&L s were very nice. Would definitely recommend this place for rehab and would return if necessary.

Yelp
My grandmother was recently in the short term rehabilitation and I have to say, my family as a whole was not satisfied with the level of service nor professionalism exhibited by the administration level. After being here for the past three months while recovering from her colon cancer removal surgery, my grandmother was rushed one evening to Urgent Care in Memorial Sloan Kettering due to excessive bleeding from her catheter, which the nursing and doctoral staff at Amsterdam could not figure out how to handle. After being rushed to urgent care at 10pm at night, she was finally seen, treated and ready to be released back to Amsterdam the following day at 6pm when my family members made the gruesome discovery that she was not allowed to return back even though her belongings were still in the facilities. According to staff in the admission and finance department, they required paperwork and had already released her bed to another incoming patient because she had not returned to her room by midnight. (Now you may ask, when is any patient who is rushed to Urgent Care ever transported to and from the hospital, diagnosed and treated all in a matter of 2 hours??? Most would think none.) Mind you, she has gone three previous times to urgent care and this protocol was never required in the past. A clear indication of the lack of communication that continuously occurs at the facility. According to the facility, they had given her bed away and that a new patient would be occupying her bed by 7pm. However we were still there collecting my grandmothers belongings at 8pm and there was no patient in sight! Suspicious....I think so! For a facility that "prides" itself in its customer service, all the administration exhibited was their 'non-accountable' attitude and basically said it wasn't their problem she could not return back to a room. The bottom line was this, they found another patient who probably had a better health plan and decided to hold the bed for them instead. For the most part, if residents do not have attentive family members, we constantly saw them being overlooked which is why we, as a family, made it our business to be there every day and monitor everything. If the residents aren't sitting in the dining area, they are immediately rushed to bed. When residents call for assistance using the call bell, they do not get attended to right away. ALL THIS BEING SAID, I would not recommend this facility if you care for the well being of your family member.
