Lately, I have been using the train to travel between Washington, D.C. and New York City. The train is a reliable unreliable source of transportation. Let me explain.
They will get you where you have to go. You just wont know if you'll get there when they say they will - or not. Its a draw, particularly along the Northeastern Regional route.
Some train conductors (or the employee that collects tickets) are very thorough, consistent, approachable and helpful. While others are not. There's one conductor (in particular) who consistently does the bare minimum (see photos). I know he's the conductor when I go 3 stops and my ticket has not been scanned.
You can literally ride for FREE on his train (guaranteed) between the NYC and Trenton stops, because you will not see him - maybe in passing. Right before we cross into Delaware, he makes a grand appearance and that's it. He does not make any announcements to the quiet car. You know, reminding people to be quiet, because this is the quiet car. He is not available to answer questions, if you have one. If you see him in passing (as he literally does a slight jog through the cabin), he will not stop if you say, "Excuse Me."
Trust me, I've tried.
It does not get more "government employee" than this guy.
He is usually on the 8 PMish train leaving out of NYC to DC on Saturday evenings. I've been on his train twice now. You can roll the dice on this guy and will come out a winner every time.
I don't see how Amtrak is profitable. I understand they are a quasi government entity, but how they will sustain or be able to continue to justify their operating model and profit and loss margins is something altogether different.
