This Solo Traveler Traveled All Over the U.S. Over 30 Days Using a Single $499 Amtrak Pass—Here's How

"For $499 the pass lets you take 10 domestic rail segments within 30 days across 500+ destinations—worked out to about $50 per ride for this traveler—enabling a coast-to-coast itinerary (including Washington, D.C.; Chicago; Denver; San Francisco; Los Angeles; San Diego; New Orleans; Miami) and, when extended, a total of roughly 230 hours on trains between Jan. 28 and March. The experience emphasizes slow, reflective travel: she journaled on long stretches, felt more present than when flying, and found fellow passengers unusually open to conversation and shared activities like card games. The pass is limited to coach-class travel (not available in Business class or private rooms); coach seats are relatively wide, recline and have leg rests, but several overnight trips in coach caused back pain—she suggested scheduling a massage afterwards—and traveling off season sometimes yielded two seats to oneself. Overall, it provided an affordable, scenic, and sociable way to see much of the country while prioritizing the journey itself." - Rachel Chang Rachel Chang Rachel Chang is a travel and pop culture journalist who contributes to Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler, Lonely Planet, and more. Amtrak Zephyr is a nice experience which tries to give you a nice old world charm experience. Zephyr is one of the scenic drives particularly between Denver and SLC. Denver station has a nice hotel though the station itself is just a bunch of tracks and platforms. The Zephyr boards in the morning at 9 and the process is smooth. The coaches are 50 years old and have two levels - seating on top and toilets and luggage at the lower level. Seats are large and spacious and comfortable, though dated and a bit rickety. The observation deck car is promptly occupied by enthusiasts who hog the seats ad infinitum - remaining people have no way of knowing when a seat will be vacant. Most of the clientele is old couples and few young people take the train. One young student from France who was taking the entire route was bored to death on the first day itself. Actually most of the route is monotonous and only the Rockies are scenic. The announcements are regular and efficient and in our case the steward was entertaining as well. The dining car was a nice experience, well laid out and with big windows. The dining room stewards are pompous and show a lot of attitude - quite unnecessarily. The three course lunch was good though for some reason the plastic packaged dessert was served first. Caesar chicken salad was very good. No receipt was provided. The scenery is good, constantly changing and follows mountains and rivers for a ling time. Many tunnels dot the route including the longest 10km rail tunnel in US at Moffat. Amtrak schedules are subservient to freight trains and these freight trains can delay Amtrak any time. Once delayed, recovery is impossible. In summary a very enjoyable experience. To be done once.

They were amazing on helping unload and den a carrier and get organized. I was able to take 4 duffle bags (20$ out of the 2 which I carried in myself) and 2 - 28” suitcases. It was late and raining but that wasn’t their fault necessarily. The people around were kind and service as well. I got lost and they guided me where to go. I had my medical service animal (they do allow emotional service animals I found out so thank goodness he wasn’t). They were sweet and greeted him at distances. No items damaged when I received at the end. I was exhausted and slept well in coach seating. I definitely recommend for moving since that’s what I was doing, didn’t get motion sickness even. Way better than flying.

My friends and I took the train to Winter Park from Denver for the day. On the way back to Denver we had to stop for wind hazard reasons and Train Conductor Chris kept spirits high through the whole ordeal! Plus we had a pretty view while we were stopped and that helped too! Minus one star cause our original cabin had a funky smell, but we spent most of the trip back in the observatory cabin so it wasn't an issue for us.

Yesterday was my first time with Amtrak. We made a trip from Denver to Winter Park Resort. Was an amazing experience. The train is clean and the staff is kind. We truly enjoy that trip and want to go back soon.

I took the train from Denver, CO to Lincoln, NE. It was about an 8 hour trip both ways. I was in coach and it was still pretty comfortable, however, I took the overnight train so if you’re ever in for a long train ride, a sleeper roomers might be more comfortable. Coach is way cheaper though and if you don’t have a seat partner you can just stretch out and sleep. My tickets were way cheaper than driving, as well. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. I had to ask around a bit but they were able to help me out! I would always prefer to travel via Amtrak if I can!

My first time riding Amtrak. It was a very interesting first experience. The train was 8 hours behind. After getting on the train the ride to my destination went very smooth. Amtrak gave me a voucher for the train being 8 hours behind. Only advice I will give is to except the train to be late.

In the private roomette, we got the seats that turned into a bed and didn't have instructions on how to put the seats back into seats once turned into bed. Thus, my bf cut his finger, trying to adjust the bed back into seats. The room was extremely filthy, outdated, broken table, filthy used dirty tissue box, sticky fuzed closed safety instruction pamphlet, dirty shoe print walls on the top bunk (from a previous person who had the room), duck tape ceiling near the vent for the ac and the air in our room didn't work until half way on our train ride. When trying to get food/drinks, we "tried" to use the tabel. The tabel is at a 60 degreese angel downward. So we had to hold our open top drinks so they wouldn't spill.... The room "tabel" seemed to have gotten broken / bent because it was hard to lay flat and put back into its stow spot. The "chef" inspired meals were ALL microwave meals. The lady in the dining car definitely tried way to hard for those tips. If they served real food, maybe it would be worth giving extra money on top of the hundreds we spent to be on a nasty outdated train from the 70's/80's. We couldn't leave our door to the roommet open for to long, since we were near the restroom; all we would smell is the toilets. I'm never going back on an Amtrack train ever again.

Station is located conveniently in the heart of downtown Denver. Great coffee shop inside the station. Amtrak boarding process was well organized and platform employees were helpful making sure you board the right car.
