Best Secret Menu Dishes From Austin Restaurants - Eater Austin

"While it’s not a secret menu really, Amy’s offers up various flavor combinations not written out on its boards. The Elvis, a combination of bananas, peanut butter, and Mexican vanilla, and The Rico, a blend of Mexican vanilla, graham crackers, cinnamon, and strawberries, have become household names among visitors and can be ordered at any time." - Sommer Brugal

Google
I hadn’t been to this location before. The parking was a little bit of a challenge but we managed. Just like any Amy’s Ice Creams, they serve delicious ice cream, my favorite being their Belgian Chocolate. Though, this time, I opted for their Coffee flavor in a waffle cone which was amazing. My husband always gets their Mexican Vanilla, with Golden Oreos and Fruity Pebbles mixed in. You should try it, it’s delicious! This location was pretty spacious inside with some tables and chairs for sitting but we took ours to-go.

Google
super cute ice cream spot, delicious ice cream, and very sweet and cool staff! i got dark chocolate with bananas mixed in topped w/ sea salt and no mistake, there was nothing left! will definitely return next time we're in austin.

Google
Cute place, I like all the children's art on the walls. The hand written flavors are charming too. The ice cream is EXTREMELY rich, so my friend and I shared a small rosemary flavor cup. If you're a movie connoisseur, they have a movie quote every day and guessing correct will get you a free topping! I usually just get fresh strawberries if I get it right. What I don't like is that I find the ice cream too sweet, as they use a lot of sugar. The employees are fantastic at their job, but also overworked during rush hour, and don't get paid enough for what they do.

Google
Awesome ice cream in a really cool spot. I got the Where’a Waldo and enjoyed every spoonful! Really friendly staff too

Google
Sweet spot for a sweet treat! Great flavors and ad-ins. Service was fabulous! Truly enjoyed our time!!

Google
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! Holy cr*p this is the best sweet cream ice cream I’ve ever had. The quality and texture was freaking perfect. I bet the other flavors are just as good. Y’all need to come to Dallas please!!!! Parking is a bit difficult but this is so worth it. The service was also wonderful, the girl that helped us was super nice and full of energy.

You cannot visit texas and not have an amys ice cream . The server threw that ice cream in the air like a right boss. The ice cream too was incredible. That nice we had another one. Go get one guys honestly well worth it.

Google
Such darlings work here! The ice cream was delicious and they have unique flavors and combinations. Check out this local chain!

Yelp
Hadn't done this type of thing in years but it was very good. Loved the coffee ice cream plain in the smallest cup; they give you a larger portion it seems if you don't ask for topping and whatnot. Everyone loved it; good friendly service with a simple ambiance and a nice seating area outside. Worth a visit.

Yelp
I haven't been here in years but finally decided to give it a try. I wish I didn't. The place is fine and people are great but the ice cream is not. It's the sweetest ice cream I've ever had. It's so full of sugar that it overpowers all other flavor. Why does one need this much sugar in ice cream? The texture isn't ruined by all the sugar though which I guess is good as some ice creams could be. Anyways, never coming back.

Yelp
delicious ice cream with classic flavors and good mix ins. Fast service with nice spots to eat. The Mexican Vanilla is delicious and unique.

Yelp
This place has a unique vibe and really good ice cream. Similar to cold stones but with its own special touch. Decent customer service and cool atmosphere
google avatar

Liang Z.

Yelp
The server chops up the ice cream and mixed in the goodies (crunshings, chocolate chips, etc), before serving it in a cone or cup per your liking. We enjoyed the ice creams and it was a generous portion. The ambiance was worldly and friendly. They have markers for people to express their artistic side, also pins for visitors to share where they came from. The only down side was that there was just one person serving everyone, so the wait was extended, not sure if that was just because it was a week day.

Yelp
Not gonna lie. I've slept on Amy's for the 7 years I've lived in Austin until today and it did not disappoint. I stayed basic (because on the first try you have to confirm that a place can do basic good), and I ordered a small of the dark chocolate fudge with rainbow sprinkles and whipped cream. While I do prefer the real whipped (they use some sort of cool whip type), the server was MVP surprising me by asking if I wanted the sprinkles on top or mixed in. Like cold stone style? Yessir. Both staff members were super sweet and easy to work with. Young, and put in the work with a long line! Pro tip: sign up for their newsletter and show your ID on your birthday and you get a free scoop. Definitely looking forward to returning to celebrate ringing in a new year with Amy's.

Jada G.

Yelp
Very good ice cream. Has a vibe of cold stone with the way they add their mix-ins but definitely better. Everyone was very friendly and they even threw the scoop up over their shoulder and into the cup for a bit of performance. Will definitely return.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream! They have unique ice cream names and flavors. I tried the coffee, which is your typical coffee flavor, but creamier! I also tried the white lightning, which is their ice cream that is flavored white mocha and contains 5% alcohol. It was a good balance and was sweet from the white mocha flavor. The staff worker was super kind and patient and let us try as many flavors we wanted to. The ice cream shop is pretty big with plenty of seating to hangout. If I end up in Austin again, I would for sure stop by for some dessert!

Yelp
Amy's Ice Cream has some of the creamiest, delightful flavors. Their ice cream came highly recommended from some locals, and my friend and I indulged in a few samples. The quality of the dairy is evident, and their portions are quite generous. Being in Austin, I knew I had to go with the butter pecan, topped with pecan praline sauce. It is meant for those with a sweet tooth- that's for sure, but it was totally worth every calorie! Also nice that they have a location at the Austin airport if you need one last fix. Considering the quality, fresh pecans, and price- it is quite the deal (calories and all).

Yelp
This is the ONLY Amy's location where everything tastes like Febreze... EW! It's worth taking an extra 15 minutes to go to one of their other locations, where toxic chemical fragrances aren't sprayed all over the food, equipment, and air.

Yelp
This review is very overdue from when we visited Austin in April last year but I am still occasionally thinking of this place. I've been recommending Amy's to anyone visiting as it's so good! When we were playing tourist back in April, we walked around and stumbled upon Amy's ice creams. The weather was 85° and eating ice cream is truly one of my favorite ways to cool down. When walking in, there were a lot of options on the menu as well as suggestions to mix in different toppings. My husband and I ended up getting coffee and sweet cream ice cream and wow, it was so good! It wasn't overly sweet but incredibly delicious. There were lots of toppings but I wanted to try the ice cream as is but for those who love a little something extra on your ice cream, you definitely won't be lacking in options. I highly recommend this place to anyone in the area as you won't regret it!

Yelp
Amy's was the perfect afternoon treat after kayaking in the morning. It's a bit hidden away in West Austin, but it's worth the drive out. I love seeing hand-written menus. The store is like any typical ice cream store with indoor and outdoor seating. The inside was decorated with Amy's merch, fun facts about the store, and local news. This location doesn't typically have a line, but the day I went, my friend and I had to wait about 20 minutes. The group in front of us was trying all the flavors, and only 2 people were working behind the counter. I got the cookies and cream and added some rainbow sprinkles, which was 10/10.

Yelp
I love Amy's and I love this location! It's so cute and the staff was great. I got a tiny which was expensive but had enough ice cream for me. If I could change one thing it would be the prices, but I know how hard it is to keep an ice cream shop open these days!

Yelp
I discovered this location while looking for the best ice cream in Austin and with the help of yelp I found Amy's. I ended up going on two different occasions due to the ice cream being very good. While the ice cream is high quality the same can be said for the friendly and helpful service. On my first trip, I sampled sweet cream, vanilla, and Oreo. I ended up getting a large cup of sweet cream with Oreo toppings chopped in (8.57$ after taxes). The ice cream was very creamy and rich and got better with each spoonful. On my next trip, I sampled vanilla, Mexican vanilla, Belgian choclate, and sweet cream. I ended up getting a pint of vanilla, Mexican vanilla, and sweet cream with Oreos chopped in (10.76$ after taxes). The pint wasn't as good as the first time I had it but it was still good. Amy's ice cream is a pretty good ice cream spot that I would recommend to all and return to if in the area.

Yelp
Pretty nice ice cream shop, has a few specialty options. We stopped by here on a recommendation. We got the creeper and mangonada, mangonada was really light in flavor, creeper was more classic in flavor. Its maybe been a while since I've been to an ice cream shop but it's a bit more expensive than I would expect to pay. The workers were pretty friendly though! They do also have a reasonable unisex bathroom for use, requires a code.

Yelp
We were visiting Austin and wanted a cool treat on a hot day. We got a large with strawberry, vanilla, and 2 other flavors (I forgot what they were called, but one had pie bits and the other one had animal crackers) and all the flavors were rich and creamy. I expected more "chunks" in the pie and animal cracker flavors, but nonetheless enjoyed it. Service was quick and fast, and we were able to try some flavors.

Yelp
Who doesn't love Amy's ice cream! One of the oldest and most favorite ice cream shoppe in Austin. There are so many cool flavors and toppings to choose from and I absolutely love their waffle cones. The staff is always so sweet and friendly in all locations.
google avatar

Melissa I.

Yelp
Extremely lovely staff! I tried Amy's ice cream for the first time the other day and everyone working there was very nice and quick! The cold pressed vanilla is SO good and I highly recommend visiting to try out different mixing and matching with the toppings you can add. Very reasonably priced and the atmosphere is that of any regular ice cream shop!

Brad S.

Yelp
If you love sweet ice cream this is the place to go to. Ice cream is so sweet and delicious. Perfect for a summer night. My kids loved the strawberry.

Taylor B.

Yelp
My favorite Amy's to go in the central/south austin area. The staff is really nice compared to other locations

Yelp
Great ice cream place with fun mix-ins and a vibrant friendly duo we found while visiting on 8/15 around 6:30p in Anakin and Mari (excuse the spelling). Anakin was super helpful and kind and let us try a bunch of flavors amid our indecision and new to Amy's visit. Anakin is a great spokesperson for what Amy's is all about giving us the lowdown of flavors and combos in 20 seconds. I would hope they are working if ever we are in Austin again. :) Mari was efficient in taking the rest of our groups order and got us checked out quickly as a line built. True sign of professional to notice and adapt! This is a spot you don't want to miss while in Austin - especially this location. There are plenty of gorgeous homes to check out on Baylor near the shop, or peruse the original Whole Foods and waterloo records nearby.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream, and I got free rainbow sprinkles because it's a rainy day! I love Amy's, they're so perfectly Austin
google avatar

Suzee Q.

Yelp
Sorry, I wasn't impressed. There was only one worker when we came in and there were five young dudes in line ahead of us and it took painfully long for the girl at the counter to both attempt flirting with them (REALLY painful to witness as the guys were NOT interested) and fulfill their ice cream orders. She even made one totally wrong and had to redo it. I got the dark chocolate ice cream w pecan praline. I didn't know the praline was liquid, expecting it to be a mix-in, but instead it was just poured on top, super sweet. The dark chocolate wasn't as rich as I expected, having asked the difference between it and the Belgian chocolate. So, disappointed there. With a waffle cone, my treat was over $10. Also, this place could use a THOROUGH scrubbing.

Yelp
We stumbled across Amy's while visiting Austin. The ice cream was delicious! So good that we had to visit once more while in Austin. did not disappoint either time and we went to two different locations.
google avatar

Courtney Ann R.

Yelp
This ice cream was so good and the staff was super knowledgeable and sweet! There's a lot of photo opportunities a great stop while you're in Austin!
google avatar

Audrey L.

Yelp
Great spot for ice cream! They have a variety of fun flavors and toppings, and they mix it up for you similar to what you would see at Cold Stone. They also allow you to sample flavors before you decide! I got the Mexican vanilla ice cream with golden Oreos mixed in. It was yummy - the Mexican vanilla is a stronger and creamier vanilla compared to a regular vanilla, and I liked how my topping was mixed in well. Overall this is a fun ice cream spot, and a great place to get a sweet treat on a hot day. There's so many flavors and toppings it's hard to decide - which means you'll have to come back again :)

Jim F.

Yelp
Disappointing to say the least. No butter pecan. No strawberry. No cherry. No dulce de leche. Nothing with a caramel swirl.
google avatar

Victoria W.

Yelp
Came here for a refreshing scoop of ice cream on a warm December afternoon. I opted for a more standard flavor, the coffee ice cream, as that was what I was feeling at the time. The scoop of coffee ice cream was enjoyable and was good, but did not blow me away. I probably would have been more impressed if I had tried out one of their more unique signature flavors, but that will be for next time! Pro tip: I think there may be a small discount if you mention that it's your first time there, like 10% off or so. I overheard the customer in front of me mention something like that.
google avatar

Kyle S.

Yelp
Wonderful service. Fun to be able to mix in different toppings but not my favorite ice cream.
google avatar

Peter E.

Yelp
Best ice cream ever! Must-visit when in Austin. Please, please, please come to Dallas!
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
When I arrived at the local ice cream place of some repute, I was greeted by someone attempting to throw a scoop of ice cream across the street for a customer to catch. Apparently this is a normal thing here. I took my ice cream handed to me the old-fashioned way. I wanted to try the Mexican vanilla, and it was indeed an aromatic flavor that tasted of sweet spices. I didn't quite grasp how much they emphasized mixing in toppings, but I imagine it's suitable for that. On the other hand, there was no reason at all to mix anything in my mint chip, which was even more richly flavored, tasting like a mix of several fresh mint varieties and with ample chocolate chunks. It was definitely in the upper end of mint chip ice cream, and I eat a lot of mint chip ice cream. They had vegan flavors as well; what's not to like?
google avatar

Melisa M.

Yelp
This might be a slightly different tune of review for Amy's, but we come here solely for the ice cream cakes. They come in varying sizes - all the way from personal to family sized - and are almost always readily available for pickup (though it is best to call ahead to get your order prepped). Our July-birthday friend has a soft spot for the Oreo ice cream cake during the sweltering Texas heat. The cake consistency is less soft serve, more frozen. This certainly does not inhibit the flavors and sweetness from coming through. It is also decorated elaborate enough for a birthday celebration. The staff here are clear professionals. The cake comes with thorough instructions on prep and storage. The cake itself comes frozen solid; you've actually got to thaw it for 30-45 min prior to consumption. This makes it pretty darn ideal for transporting. The line in the store is always a tad inconvenient, but they make up for it with the easy parking right past the store on w 6th St. Be back next year for that ice cream cake!

Vince L.

Yelp
The skibibity toilet flavor is skibibity shit. Everything else is good but they managed to mess up my ice cream somehow some way.
google avatar

Dustin F.

Yelp
I read that this ice cream place was amazing, and to be honest didn't really believe it but it lived up to the hype. It's unbelievably delicious. And the server behind the counter was exceptional as well.
google avatar

Midori G.

Yelp
Super yummy ice cream with a fun atmosphere and staff! I am not from the Austin area so I was pleasantly surprised with this chain. They had so many flavors and add-ins to choose from! What I ordered: I got a small Texas dirt with cookie dough added in. This is one of those ice cream places that smashes the ice cream and toppings together (which I like). The ice cream was rather expensive. I feel like I have gotten similar things for less money, but it was still good nevertheless! At this location, they are only allowing one group inside the building at a time. Make sure to bring s face mask!
google avatar

Renee P.

Yelp
Amy's ice cream was a joy all around to visit! The person working was super welcoming and explained all the flavors and how the whole process worked. It's very similar to a Coldstone where you can pick whatever ingredients to mix into the ice cream. I got the Mexican vanilla with Reeses which was delicious. Very cute and kids friendly - they even do tricks sometime with the ice cream!
google avatar

Raecheal T.

Yelp
The best Amy's location, imho. We love coming here for our ice cream cakes and cones for the kids. The staff is always friendly and the vibe is excellent.
google avatar

Jennie B.

Yelp
So yummy I went back twice in three days. The ice cream flavors were unassuming but delicious. Sweet cream, vanilla, Mexican vanilla, strawberry, I loved them all. And that hot fudge is addictive! Whipped cream was just ok.
google avatar

Keizzel C.

Yelp
To skip the line head to this location over the one on Congress. Our server here was super friendly and let us try as many samples as we liked. The faves here are def the Mexican Vanilla and Belgian Chocolate. I opted for the Belgian Chocolate in a cake cone and they stuff the cone with at least 2 large scoops. The chocolate here is nice and creamy but not too sweet which was great for a hot day. The shakes here are also winners and they're not too expensive for what you get coming in ~$6. Check out their combos on the board for the shakes. We tried the coffee lobster shake and that was delicious!
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
Great little ice cream chain spot kind of similar to a cold stone but better. They have quirky cool concoctions and all the normal favorites. All the different types of ice creams are all great. Staff is cool here very nice. Not much to really say it's ice cream ‍ JKs pro tip. Get the Mexican vanilla!
google avatar

Terry N.

Yelp
We had a few people recommend this ice cream chain in Austin so we decided to try it while visiting. Full disclosure: we're more of gelato fans than ice cream, so we may be a bit biased. The decor was colorful and bright and the flavors were fun: White Chocolate, Mexican Vanilla, even had a Vegan (Chocolate) and boozy option (Brandy Alexander). They had a more relaxed Coldstone smash-the-toppings-in vibe, but the toppings weren't anything particularly different. The ice cream is aight, it'll address your craving but won't wow you. There's gotta be better choices in a city like Austin.
google avatar

Shalini M.

Yelp
I ordered the turtle: great combination of Mexican vanilla, hot fudge and pecan and praline
google avatar

Andrew L.

Yelp
Amazing ice cream, imagine if you took cold stone and gave increased its personal touch by about 20x Set of creative flavors (such as mudslide and beer flavored) but enough "normal" flavors to keep everyone satisfied Super wide assortment of toppings, I cannot imagine an ice cream lover ever getting bored coming here Staff was also very friendly and willing to let us try a sample or two and had no issue with us mixing as many flavors as we want into even the small cup!
google avatar

Joshua N.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream, nice staff, and the ability to create your own ice cream! Kind of like a local austin version of Cold Stone Creamery. About the same price as Cold Stone, too. Quirky and fun atmosphere, definitely worth going back.
google avatar

Ele M.

Yelp
This ice cream rocks! Omg! I'm not crazy over the whole chilled, scrape, crazy topped ice cream scene but Amy's has got it going on! They've got cute little benches outside for you to safely social distance and enjoy some awesome ice cream. They require you to mask before you enter and only allow a certain amount of people to enter at a time. The attendants working behind the counter are super pleasant and you can still feel their smiles behind the masks. I ordered the Mexican Vanilla in a Waffle Bowl and I don't think I will ever forget that combo. It's strawberries, cinnamon, vanilla bean ice cream, and has pieces of waffle cone in it. It sounds simple but the flavor is so much more complex! I had never heard of Amy's until now and I wish there were some back home in Arlington but whenever I'm near, I've got to stop here!
google avatar

Vidya P.

Yelp
This sweet cream ice cream was to DIE for! It was definitely a very welcome treat from the Austin heat! The ice cream was incredibly creamy and wasn't too sweet! The line was long but it was completely worth the wait!!! All of the servers were friendly and offered samples. I'm so glad they did because they have a lot of wonderful flavors to choose from! The price is decent as well. Would highly recommend on any trip to Austin!

Yelp
What has happened to staff training? I recently visited two Amy's Ice Creams after moving away from the city. I'm confused what has happened with Amy's and it's staff's training. I specifically requested my toppings be mixed into a small sized ice cream with two flavors. Yesterday when I requested the same ice cream set up the toppings weren't mixed in automatically. However, upon asking for my toppings to be mixed in, both flavors were mixed together with the toppings... I am not positive what is happening, but I've never had to request for ice cream toppings to be mixed in and never had both flavors mixed together. My significant other who didn't specifically ask for his toppings to be "mixed in" only had his toppings placed on top. Ice cream flavors are spot on. However, staff training is questionable at best.

Yelp
Austin friend's spoke highly of Amy's. I felt bad when my experience wasn't remotely close to their praises. Underwhelmed were my taste buds. I wasn't a fan. The ice cream was still a bit frozen to where I had to wait for it to soften before I could dig my spoon into it. Not my cup of tea.
