The Best Ice Cream Shops in Houston, Texas | Eater Houston

"This quintessentially Austin ice cream company brings Houston its flavors like Mexican vanilla, Belgian chocolate, and Oreo, with mix-ins like Fruity Pebbles cereal, fruits, Ginger Snaps, and various chocolate candies. Don’t miss out on their specialty flavors like its peach cobbler, which is riddled with roasted peaches and crushed Nilla wafers. Those 21 and up will want to check out Amy’s boozy selections, such as the chocolate cherry whiskey with Jim Beam Whiskey." - Brianna Griff

Google
This place is for sure one of the best ice-cream places in Houston. Ice-cream is flavorful but not too sugary. The staff is very friendly. They are open late at night.

Google
My wife and I wanted ice cream and came here and blown away at the variety this place has. If I remember correctly, we were told there are 11000+ varieties of ice cream they can create. While they have such nice flavors, they should consider a remodel. There are too many areas in the shop with broken-down furniture.

Google
Quite and clean. Nice server, i didn’t get her name but she was cute with very pretty braids. Her service was fast and convenient. I got 2 scoops, Strawberry and Jasmine, and 3 scoop banana split. Both were yummy and wonderful.

Google
Place is great best part is that they stay open late. Kid friendly and ice cream flavors are bomb. Try the Peeps one for Easter it’s very cute and tastes so good.

Google
I highly recommend going here if you love ice cream!!! My brother and I were driving back home from a part of Houston we’ve never been to before when we passed a COW… HOLDING. ICE CREAM!!! I IMMEDIATELY skrted the car into that parking lot. We were greeted by the nicest employee ever - his name is Peter :) I told him both my brother and I aren’t from Texas and literally randomly decided to stop here just now and his energy made the whole experience (alongside the ice cream)!!! He said we could try as many flavors of ice cream as we wanted which was lovely to hear as that always gives me, an indecisive queen - ANXIETY. He was so helpful and kind and gave us the rundown of how everything worked while making us laugh the entire time! I got half mango, half belgian chocolate. My brother got half oreo, half belgian chocolate. THE ICE CREAM IS TO DIE FOR!!! It is so creamy, just the right amount of sweetness… i could eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner… and then get it for dessert again 😭 and this is coming from a lactose intolerant girly. Anyways, give my boy Peter a raise, and please open an Amy’s Ice Cream in Columbus, OH and Chicago, IL as that is where I live <3

Google
Good price and nice employees they thank you for coming and make you feel good even if you didn't leave a tip. I have not seen customer service like this in a long time. They are genuinely happy to be working there. Keep it, Amy. You just gain my business from here on out

Google
I went to Amy’s Ice Creams and loved it! The ice cream tastes amazing, and you can tell they’ve been around for many years. Great place with lots of flavor options and a fun vibe!

Google
We were in the neighborhood from out of town and decided to stop in at Amy's Ice Cream. What a great choice! Lots of great flavors were available, and the service was excellent as well. My husband ordered the Mexican Vanilla with the pecans praline sauce and he LOVED it! We will definitely be back. I hope more of these will come to the Houston area.

Yelp
LOVED the ice cream here! Went on a late night (and by that I mean late for a weekday since it was 9pm on a Wednesday) hunt for some ice cream. I had heard of Amy's before and seeing that it was only 10 mins away and open til 12, I decided to give them a try. Upon arrival there were a few families in line, but the wait went quick. There were 2 people taking orders and both were friendly. I sampled the banana pudding and knew it was exactly what I wanted! Got some chocolate chips mixed in and honestly could've done without, the ice cream was so rich and creamy and the banana pudding flavor was on point! Tasted just like the real thing. My bf got the Mexican vanilla with Cinnamon Toast Crunch mixed in and it was really good as well. We both got small sized scoops, which were more than enough with the huge waffle cones they have. The waffle cones were actually super good as well, perfectly crunchy. It was pretty pricey, $19 for 2 cones but the quality of ice cream makes up for it for me. The spot itself is cute, kinda retro looking with some seating inside and outside. They also sell pints and ice cream cakes. I'll for sure be back to try other flavors.

Yelp
Wr have a horrible experience with a team member. Upon entering she rolled her eyes . Reckon we are weekly customers and are familiar with most of the staff. We had an a specific incident as we placed our order and we were asked if there was anything else we assumed it was for the ice cream order she was currently making and proceeded to say no. As we went to pay we told her we weren't done ordering and rolled her eye yet again and said " that's why I said if there was anything else " she sighed real loud and rudely walked back to the ice cream bin. She made sure to charge us first before making our ice cream. She has a nose piercing is African American , wears fake eyelash and has and cross contaminating Apple Watch on as she proceeded to keep the same gloves on while making multiple orders . We will be coming back to the establishment, however will be requesting to be served by a different team member. Rude customer service

Yelp
When people suggest a place for ice cream, they often recommend the holy grail Amy's. I'd say give it a shot, but don't expect it to change your life. I'm not an ice cream snob, but I found their infamous Mexican Vanilla to be just okay. Maybe I'm not a "vanilla person" and I'm quite adventurous with my flavors. If you are the kind of person to mix in a bunch of random candies and cookies - then you'd like it. I would come back to try their other flavours but I just wasn't impressed with their "Mexican Vanilla." Also... for one tiny cup... it wasn't that cheap either.
google avatar

Andrew W.

Yelp
Got some ice cream but overall it's about 3 stars. It was 1 star when we got a vegan icecream with Oreo as it was like salt icecream but we got to replace with vegan strawberry and it was better.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
I picked up a tiny size of Mexican Vanilla Ice Cream tonight, which is equivalent to one scoop. It's hard to believe that any vanilla ice cream is worth eating by itself or without toppings bc vanilla is usually boring and too simple for me, but this Mexican vanilla version is on another level of awesome. Imo, much better than any Vanilla Gelato, French Vanilla, Breyer's, Blue Bell, etc. It was very delicious, very creamy, dense, cold but not frozen, sweet and fragrant in its unique way. It's so good, I rarely add anything to it and has a sweet heavy cream, egg yolk profile to it. I wouldn't be surprised if it had a smidge of amaretto or coconut due to its full vanilla bean, exotic taste that's hard to fully pin point in description. Great, friendly service tonight as well.

Yelp
Sweet tooth? Can't go wrong with Amy's. I like that they have a "tiny" option if you're looking to get your fix. These days I go for the sweet cream with a mix in. Depending on when you arrive, you'll likely have to wait in line.. but it's worth it! Everyone is very friendly at Amy's and they have a funky fun aesthetic. Rich flavors and great options for mix ins! Give it a try, you will not be disappointed.

Yelp
Our friends told us about this place, and we decided to come here after a Friday night dinner. We each ordered a different flavor of ice cream. None of the flavors stood out, I felt like all the flavors needed a boost. Both vanillas tasted the same. There was nothing special about this place. Better ice cream from the store.
google avatar

Emmy S.

Yelp
This place is always packed, which is well deserved! This place is amazing! Offering a wide variety of flavors with numerous toppings the combinations are never ending. Their ice creams are so creamy and very reasonable priced. I always make the drive out here because i like it THAT much. The place itself it super cute n hip, i recommend this place to everybody i know!

Yelp
I've been a loyal customer of Amy's Ice Creams for years, but my recent visits to the 3816 Farnham location have been incredibly disappointing. The service has become downright rude, and wait times are excessively long. Staff members argue with guests and show no sense of urgency, which makes the experience frustrating. It's common to see staff lingering in the back, engaged in outside conversations, while the front remains unattended. There's a clear lack of management, as employees openly laugh at guests who mention complaining and seem to believe there are no real consequences for their behavior. The facility itself is deteriorating. One of the two bathrooms has been closed for about a month, and the overall cleanliness of the store has significantly declined. I sincerely hope that these issues are addressed soon because I hate to see such a beloved store go downhill fast.

Yelp
Good ice cream but not the best we've ever had. They had some unique flavors on the menu but we opted for sweet cream, mint chocolate chip and Oreo sundae. Hit the sweet spot after dinner! Wished they had more seating inside for hot summer days but we came on a crowded weekend day so to be expected.

Yelp
Came here after dinner for my date night with my fiancé. We were pleasantly surprised when they asked the entire room who wanted to play a game. Without asking me, my fiancé volunteered me. I had to catch a scoop of any ice cream with toppings in it into a large bowl to get free ice cream for myself or catch it in a smaller cup to get free ice cream for both myself and my fiancé. I wanted a challenge and went for the smaller cup! There was a fun count down and I ended up catching it! My fiancé got Ube without any topping and I got Belgian chocolate with toffee bits. The flavor was amazing!! I especially love Amy's bc I went to Austin for undergrad and it brings a sense of nostalgia. The only downside is the ice cream has a low melting point and didn't hold its consistency very well or for very long. It mostly melted by the time we were finishing up our ice cream. Overall an amazing experience! We will be back for another surprise hopefully!
google avatar

Johnneshia R.

Yelp
The ice cream is pretty good but the line is always LONG! And you will stand in the like at least 45 minutes to an hour. *its not really worth it to me*

Yelp
Solid 4! We have beeen here a few times and my gf really likes this place. I like it too. Ice cream: the first time I had Oreos and vanilla. Really good. Their version of cookies and cream. This time I opted for an cookies and cream Oreo cake. 15.00 lol holy hell that's a rip off! For one that is priced wayyy too dam high and second it took 40 mins to defrost. We couldn't even eat it right away. It was as hard a rock. So we shared her ice cream and ate this hard frozen rock later at the home. It was definitely good though. Over priced in my opinion. Customer service is good. I asked for a metal spoon or knife and I might as well ask for some sort of surgery. It was like the most intricate question I have ever asked lol hahahahah. We will definitely go back.

Yelp
Amy's is a cute spot, and I love that there's a dessert shop in the area that is open until midnight! My oreo ice cream topped with Kit Kat was good but did not exactly fit my preferences. The oreo ice cream was creamy, but it wasn't sweet enough to really taste over the Kit Kat topping. Also, I wish the Kit Kat topping would have been chopped or crushed more than it was - I was basically getting whole mini Kit Kat bars on top. The ice cream was good, and I would return to try more flavors. It was a bit overpriced for what I got, but I still enjoyed it regardless.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
The service is the best in Houston. Every employee was smiling and extremely helpful. You can't go wrong with sweets and ice cream. I would say be prepared to wait in line because everyone tastes each flavor before making up their mind. Just enjoy the high energy feel of the atmosphere. The only downside is the price.
google avatar

Andrea R.

Yelp
Love this place and I love the theme of it. I also love the milk shakes that they have. I would say I definitely I love the chocolate Ice cream here more than any other place I'm usually a vanilla kind of girl.
google avatar

Roma B.

Yelp
Love Amy's ice creams! Been a couple times in Austin, was excited to try out the Houston location. Got the turtle sundae (Mexican vanilla ice cream with hot pecan praline caramel sauce and hot fudge). Loved it, satisfies sweet cravings! Portion is huge! Definitely recommend trying.
google avatar

Yelp
Stumbled upon this gem. It gives Houston vibes. Many options to choose from. The customer service is superb the ladies and gent are very nice and friendly.

Yelp
Enjoyed the mexican vanilla ice cream that I got. Cute little place. Seems like a good date spot.

Yelp
I can see why people like Amy's ice cream so much! I came here for the first time last night with some friends that live out of town. We all really enjoyed the ice cream and shakes, there are so many options to choose from, many toppings, and they are very vegan friendly too, super inclusive. Overall, ice cream, we loved! It was a lot more on the sweeter side. For me, I got the strawberry ice cream mixed together with the sweet cream one and it was super delicious, and with a waffle bowl. It was more than I had expected it to be, but a good problem to have if you're a sweet tooth like me I was pretty disappointed in the waffle bowl. It was way too sweet and didn't taste good. I actually didn't eat it. It was kind of stale and slightly bendy (not because of the ice cream though), it tasted like an artificial a slightly underdone sugar cookie... They open quite late! With how popular this place is, it makes sense to have more seating but there weren't a tone of places to sit, by the looks of it. We did sit outside, which wasn't terrible but periodically had some bad sewage smell. However, ambiance was great, the staff were pretty great and helpful too! They were friendly and guided my friends and I well. My friends also really really enjoyed their ice creams and shakes too. Would recommend to people! Although, may not be my go-to first choice.
google avatar

Habiba K.

Yelp
The flavors aren't unique which is why all the mix-ins are allowed. The service is really slow (but the employees are kind.) The aesthetic is nice inside but that's about it. I ticked this place off my bucket list and I'll probably not rush to come back.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
Omg. We will be back. Amazing ice cream. Fun music. Servers dancing. Loved loved loved it. Service was amazing!!

Tomeka W.

Yelp
I have been going to Amy's for 14 years. I have enjoyed every moment of getting my ice cream from there driving from Pearland to try every flavor. Taking wonderful chances on the play of season and holiday menu combinations. Tonight made me regret even driving 30 minutes to enjoy my favorite ice cream place. A young lady named Maya gave me a bad taste. Her customer service is not what I have been receiving from my beloved ice cream favorite. She was loud, talking crazy, and down right rude after ignoring us standing at the counter for about 15 minutes while another server was helping customers that had already ordered. The server that was helping the other customers eventually stepped in and completed our order, then apologized for her behavior. Not his job but he was awesome. I will reconsider driving so far to receive unacceptable behavior.
google avatar

Erika O.

Yelp
I love how Amy's has a ton of flavor and topping options. The vegan options are great too! Service is great at this location. I had Oreo with sprinkles and the tiny size is perfect!
google avatar

Patricia Z.

Yelp
I always find this spot to be pretty ok when I walk in and even better after buying the ice cream. The inside could be updated a tad but who am I kidding, no one really cares about that part. The ice cream is the real star. They currently have vegan flavors like banana pudding that are coconut based so that's something new, I think. I would steer away from raspberry lemon sorbet as it just doesn't come together well in terms of its texture which was quite crumbly today. I loved the tangy taste of it which was different than other places nearby where the sorbet tastes like a tablespoon of sugar. The service is also probably the must friendly and fun here. Our ice cream scooper even did some tricks, throwing and catching the scoops with their cups. Fun place that definitely worth a visit !
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
If you want to watch someone take vanilla ice cream and smash cookies into it then call it cookies 'n' cream come here. They literally get their rage out working here, I was very confused about this process. Here I thought I was getting something specially made, nope they just toss item together. If you look at my photo, she said she would put the Twix on top, she literally drunked it in the side. By the time we paid and got the ice cream it was already melting. The seating is extremely limited, and line was very long but the ice cream was underwhelming. If you're drunk this is probably the go to spot, if you're sober you'll hate yourself. Just go to Walmart and get yourself some better ice cream for the same price. There was a box that had lollipops, which wanted a dollar for 3. I believe they have the honor system. The ambiance was not worth sitting around for inside or outside, all I kept hearing was oh my god from the conversations around me.

Yelp
Amazing ice cream thanks AMYS. RICE's HANSZENites love yall. Tasted creamy and delicious
google avatar

Lili S.

Yelp
My friend recommended we check this place out and I was already excited upon pulling into the parking lot and seeing a giant cow at the front of the shop. I was even more surprised by the vegan menu. Albeit smaller than the regular menu, it too had unique flavors. I chose red velvet with ginger snap toppings and was quickly served. The ice cream didn't taste vegan (which is a good thing) and had a creamy consistency that I appreciated. Sitting outside and enjoying this dessert was the perfect way to end a summer night.
google avatar

HsiaoCheng W.

Yelp
The staff is very nice. But I found the ice cream to be only "ok". The Belgian chocolate wasn't very cold and kind of runny. I think for the price point I may not go back. The chocolate dump cake has a pic of a cake but actually is ice cream. It's good. But again same issue with the Belgian chocolate ice cream. Lots of construction in the area.
google avatar

Allison N.

Yelp
Great customer service. Reminds me of an old ice cream shop from childhood. Has a very rugged homey feel. Awesome energy in this place. They have amazing vegan options. Always have at least 4. U can call ahead to see. Homemade in store ice cream. CANT BEAT THIS PLACE!!! Great Houston gem!!
google avatar

Ken B.

Yelp
Consistently amazing ice cream and flavors. Always a highlight. Service is usually very good and the decor is fun.
google avatar

Maria S.

Yelp
I was craving gelato but ran into Amy's so I decided to give it a try. I asked if they had low-fat ice cream and they said they have vegan ice cream. I really don't think vegan equals low fat. I saw two ices, lime and aloha. I chose the aloha which was like a piña colada. It's delicious. However, at $4.50 for a tiny scoop, I find it overpriced.
google avatar

Clay M.

Yelp
I frequent the Amy's Ice Creams in Houston, TX. Last night, 3/26/22, I purchased a medium ice cream with mix-ins. As I ate my ice cream, something hard hit the back, right side of my mouth. I spit it out, and went to the sink to rinse it off. Totally shocked me to see a piece of blue plastic about the size of a penny! I washed out the rest of my ice cream cup, and didn't see anything else. However, I was nearly finished eating, so I'm terrified to think I may have ingested more of this blue plastic. I have no idea how this occurred, but it's incredibly concerning...
google avatar

Kennedy W.

Yelp
I enjoyed Amy's. The ice creams were a bit sweeter than I would have preferred but I think the base for all of them are sweet cream flavor. The service was good but they did try and upsell us which was annoying for my friend lol but we recognize it's just a part of the business. Would we return, maybe. Would I recommend to others, yes.
google avatar

Faiza Z.

Yelp
The best place for unique flavors! Their menu changes from time to time, but it's a great way to try something different whenever you want something sweet after dinner. Love that they stay open late, and whenever it comes back on the menu, I highly recommend the Ube flavor.
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
I love Amy's ice cream in Austin. I was ecstatic Houston had a parlor, but over the years, have found this location could use work in their ice cream quality and employees. In the Austin locations, the employees were jovial and performed tricks like throwing ice cream. The Houston employees generally don't look happy to be there; it's a bit of a damper to where I don't walk out of the store that happy either - even though I'm holding ice cream! The ice cream was generally consistent with Austin's until my last visit on Sep 21, 2020. My go-to Belgian Chocolate tasted off. I pondered if nostalgia was throwing me off, but encountered an unpleasant gritty texture on the second quart. I speculate some cocoa powder wasn't properly dissolved. I emailed them as I believe management should be aware of quality issues - but they never got back to me. $28 for 2 quarts is pricey for "meh" ice cream that I'd rather toss than eat. Separately, a few years back, I bought a pint of Belgian Chocolate only to discover it was actually coffee flavored. I called and was asked to bring it back. I drove all the way out with the still-mostly-full container only to have the employee openly doubt me and try a spoonful. I was stunned at the blatant distrust and mildly disgusted at the unsanitary sampling. Nevertheless, with the mislabeling verified, I got the flavors swapped.
google avatar

Yelp
I really like coming to Amy's ice creammmm They have awesome hours, where I can go fairly late and get a scope! Friendly staff who occasionally flip scopes and give generous gummy bear servings + u + (thank you.. ) And they feel quite local..! I honestly mistook them for a htown local business (b/c of the UH-Main flag in store) until I looked it up but they're still a TX based business which is pretty awesome Anyways! Very comfy and very often the first place I think to go get ice cream when the suns down and I'm out with friends~
google avatar

Yelp
On 6/22/23 Thursday at 1110 pm my girl and I we're taken aback by the absolute disrespect we had ordering a cone with ice cream and caramel, that we did not know that the caramel would compromise the cone and probably melt and or break it down. Instead of letting us know the alternative we ended up with, we were told "does it really look like I can put the caramel in a cone with out it getting on your dress?" In a absolutely discourteous, abrasive, and condescending manner by the Caucasian girl , with platinum blonde and colored streaks with a bandana on her head. I hope someone from management speaks to her about how to politely let those that do not understand the way caramel and a cone would react to one another like someone who's JOB is working with these often. All I can suggest to others is to preface that they have not worked in an ice cream parlor and to not be unnecessarily rude for asking for something they want.
google avatar

Amber S.

Yelp
I've been here a few times, and this was my favorite visit! I usually get the large, where you can get 3 scoops/flavors for $6.50. I got two seasonal flavors (pumpkin pie and dark bark, which is dark chocolate with peppermint bark) and coffee. The price is pretty fair for the size, and the employees are always so nice and let you sample flavors. The only reason why I am docking a star is because their flavors tend to only cover a certain profile (think Marble Slab) so I actually usually have some difficulty finding 3 flavors that I want!
google avatar

Cierra M.

Yelp
Nice staff, great vegan flavors, and a vegan friendly fudge! So glad I accidentally found this location... it's a hidden gem!
google avatar

Christie E.

Yelp
I was in town hanging out with my cousin and she insisted on taking me to Amy's Ice Creams and I'm glad she did. I had the honey bourbon and spice of fall and the flavors were *chef's kiss* amazing. The spice of fall had all of the...spices of fall plus chunks of Biscoff cookies. Lots of cardamom, cinnamon, and other warm and tasty spices. The honey bourbon had a nice subtle hint of bourbon and now I need more alcohol flavored ice cream in my life. Amy's is definitely on my list of places to visit when in Houston.

Yelp
In less than a year after giving this place 4 stars, I am downgrading to a 3 and actually considered giving a 2. I didn't however because some people don't mind what they pay for things so as long as you know it's expensive it's your choice but not mine. I visited a couple of days ago for an after lunch dessert ordering my usual hot fudge sundae. My last visit was in 2019. They weren't allowing any dine in options (Covid) so I had to get it to go. That's ok because that's the world we live in now. But then when paying I realized that the cost was about 10% higher than last time. With tax it was over $7.50 and that's for their small size that doesn't come with a cherry or nuts which left the vanilla ice cream, hot fudge and whipped topping. I'm sorry but this is getting a little rich for my blood. I'm not talking about taste but the cost. Yes it's in the loop pricing but I know several other places that are just as good but at least $1 cheaper for the same thing. I'm sorry Amy but you lost me.
google avatar

Yelp
Ice cream was good. The ambiance was super crowded and the service was terrible. The old lady that helped us was super rude. She did everything with an attitude. It made me not want to go back. 6/10

Ellen W.

Yelp
Service was friendly and quick. The two flavors of ice cream we got (chocolate fudge and coffee) were soooo good! I've never had ice cream so smooth and flavorful! It's not cheap, but it's worth it!
google avatar

Jake Y.

Yelp
Tried to order two pints of ice cream on a whim. Ordered online and had my order cancelled because they didn't have both flavors I asked for. Tried ordering two other flavors and this time got a call from the store saying "we don't have any of the 4 flavors you asked for because the app is updated off of the Austin location and we don't always have the same variety!" Well it would seem that Amy's Houston is not living up to Amy's Austin's quality standard. The Austin location is awesome, but I'll probably never try the Houston location again. -$40 on my credit card for ~21 business days and zero pints of ice cream, I'm sure that's not what Ms. Amy had in mind. Their stuff is overpriced anyway, I think I'll stick with blue bell.
google avatar

Yelp
Amy's is such a classic Houston gem. I haven't been to Amy's in almost 10 years, and I was thrilled to see it's still just as wonderful if not better! Now that I'm on a plant-based journey, I am constantly seeking out vegan friendly establishments. Amy's has a daily vegan ice cream option, as well as oat milk to prepare the milkshake. I got the vegan cookies and cream milkshake and it was very good! It was rich and creamy and made with no mistake! If you are looking for a classic milkshake or plant based delight, Amy's is the place for you!

Ann N.

Yelp
Friendly service! Our first time here and the server gave us some recommendations. We got a small cup with a scoop of coffee and american pie flavor.

Yelp
I have been coming to this place ever since I first tried one of their chain locations in Austin. The actual location of the store is a bit awkwardly placed since you have to turn in from a weird angle sometimes. However, the ambience is very chill and casual. The seating area is a bit worn down and torn up so it would be nice if they fixed that up. They also have a wide selection of ice creams to try and you can get mix-ins depending on which size you get. I usually get a small, so you get one Mix-in. My personal favorite is the butter pecan with chocolate chips. My friends always get the dark chocolate with Kit Kats. I like getting mix-ins because as they are mixing the toppings in, the ice cream gets softer and easier to eat. However, this also means they melt a little faster. Definitely one of the best ice cream places in Houston during the hot Houston Summers! Their ice creams are also reasonably priced in comparison to similar ice cream places.

Leandra S.

Yelp
Visited the Amy's location in the Heights and was blown away with how rude the ladies working there were. It was my first time there and couldn't decide on what I wanted. They asked me to move out of the way to help the people behind me and offered them samples but not me. When I asked to try a flavor, I was ignored and yet again the lady coming in to pick up an order behind me was helped. Absolutely the worst service! Will never go back! Rather go to smoosh ice cream!
