The 14 Best Irish Pubs In NYC

"Many Irish pubs in NYC are at least 50% sports bar. An Beal Bocht, on the other hand, feels like a cottage where you can socialize with your neighbors and hear about how their grandkids are doing at school. This Riverdale spot started out as a booze-less cafe back in the ’60s, but it currently has a full bar, in addition to an old stone fireplace and a boat hanging from the ceiling. Most nights, there’s some kind of performance—like music and storytelling—that you can enjoy with a side of fish and chips." - bryan kim, willa moore, will hartman, neha talreja, sonal shah

An Beal Bocht Cafe - Review - Riverdale - New York - The Infatuation

"The pint glasses feature both the Guinness and Notre Dame logos, and the yellowing walls are covered with vintage whiskey ads and posters for plays by Sean O’Casey and Martin McDonagh. If you couldn’t tell from the name, it should become apparent once you step inside the cottage-like space in Riverdale that An Beal Bocht is a very Irish bar. Hang your coat by the door, then grab a table near the old stone fireplace and enjoy some heavily browned bangers with a pile of mash that’s as stiff as plaster (and buttery too). The atmosphere is as quaint and casual as any small-town pub, and there’s live entertainment on most nights—generally music, but also open mic and impromptu storytelling." - Bryan Kim

An Beal Bocht Cafe is a nice hidden gem restaurant! This restaurant gave really homey and cozy vibes. They have traditional Irish brunches like fish and chips, English beans, grilled cheese sandwiches, and sunny side up eggs. But what takes the cake and beats everything are their fries, their home fries are so good! The service here is also very good, the waiters are friendly and informative. The food also comes out pretty quick and they even have live music on the weekends. This place is very festive, and can also get pretty busy and crowded. It’s very old school, traditional, and cozy here! The prices are also decent, you can get meals from around $10-$20! So if you’re in the area, stop by here! The only criticism I have here is that they should just have the name of their restaurant more visibly written, so people can know the name of the place. Price:$10-20💸 Rating: 8.5/10 📝

Google
Snug, cozy little Irish bar close to Gaelic Park. About 8 or 9 outdoor tables for at least 4 ppl, including a couple of 6 person picnic tables. Was there on a nice weather late September Saturday afternoon. Sat outside with the bride & another couple. Very nice Guinness pints. Service was good. Both couples each split a burger & curry chicken. Both dishes very good. Wish my local was this good.

À very happy place. Good fun, drinks, friends and live music. Slainte! 🍻🇮🇪💚

Google
Awesome spot. Super cozy. Irish breakfast is a must. Lots of meats, to the point they offer ‘half meats’ for about $4 less. Even their “vegetarian” Irish Breakfast is 🤤. One of those businesses that charge you for using your card, so try bringing exact change. Not sure why they don’t give back coins, but just bring the exact change so you don’t have to pay an extra card surcharge or have to wonder why anyone would think it’s ok just to not give you your correct change. One of the best restaurants I’ve eaten from in Riverdale.

Google
Honestly had a great time in this bar. I got some wings and fries, and they were good. My experience was great until someone nearby was complaining about the cheesecake. But realistically, who orders cheesecake at a bar?

Google
What a wonderful restaurant and bar/pub. It's filled floor to ceiling with ambiance. You get very personal service from the amazing staff (sometimes in that uniquely Irish way). The food is better than the traditional basic pub fair. They have a great dinner menu with Shepard's Pie and the lot. Today I had the Chicken sandwich with a side of fries. It was very fresh, and the bread cracked slightly as I bit into it. This is a must for a toasted bread. If you're in the neighborhood, please, please stop by and enjoy An Beal Bocht. They have both indoor and heated outside seating!

Went for trivia night the past two months. Love the dedication from the hosts they put on a great show. Bartenders are cool and the guinness is solid. Have really enjoyed all the food I've had here too. Fun spot overall.

Google
Took a trip up to Riverdale for lunch. Met a friend up there who recommended Au Beal Bocht cafe. An absolutely adorable little place. A short walk from the subway.(Up a very steep staircase) Very charming place. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Had to wait a bit for a table. There was a large party in back that I believe took up a lot of the seating this place has. Food was great. We had the traditional Irish breakfast and the omelette special they had. Delicious! Brunch came with a free drink. We got the mimosa. It came in a medium size ball jar! It was yummy and left me with a nice buzz. I totally recommend this place. If you're up in Riverdale or wanting to visit definitely stop here for your meal.

Yelp
I had an amazing time here at An Beal Bocht Cafe! The food is just super tasty and fresh! The service is very quick and friendly! The ambiance is also super chill and cute! 5 stars for sure!

Yelp
For 33 years, An Beal Bocht Cafe has been a favorite neighborhood establishment. Centered as a spot for artist to gather and performs. The owner has created a space to showcase all of the local talents. Music; Irish and all other, Poetry, Painting & Photography and Theater. ABB's Team is warm, friendly and will make sure your visit is enjoyable. Good food and libations. Keep up the outstanding work ABB! If you're ever in the area. GET SOME!!!!

Yelp
Delicious pub fare. Staff is friendly and helpful. Their drinks are generous with lot of beers on tap. Old Irish newspapers and Irish themed photos covers the walls. Always a good vibe. Check it out. You can't go wrong.

Dick W.

Yelp
An Irish pub presenting different live performances. I prefer the once a month storytelling nights, and the once a month team Trivia night, as well as the weekly Irish music seisiun. There is also a poets night, and the occasional theatre piece. But mostly they have a different musician every night. Friendly. Regulars. Not too far from the 238th street station on the 1. In a nice enough Riverdale neighborhood.

Yelp
I thought I wrote a review already, but alas I must have been mistaken. I love this place! It's everything I thought it would be. It's an Irish bar with a community that is faithful and shows up. A friendly barkeep and a menu with decent food. Our bar stool companion said "you can't go wrong with the fish&chips" and after all this is a standard which should deliver, and deliver it did! Great music, many taps, art and theater next door ample schedule of events. Thanks for a reel good time.

Yelp
Not bad! Pretty good bangers and mash, and very good service. I ate outside, but the inside seemed just fine as well. Slainte!

Yelp
Always a good place to talk and enjoy the neighborhood folks. So friendly and casual you never feel overwhelmed. Friendly service and yummy menu.

Yelp
Great ambiance. Relaxed cafe / bar with great music and friendly service. Nice local spot to hang out at the weekend.

Yelp
This is the real thing! The drinks are wonderful, but what makes it fabulous is the live music. The food has never disappointed and the live Irish theater is also a great added benefit of this wonderful institution.

Suran S.

Yelp
This bar is heaven. It is a stroke of lucky karma that this place exists to go to-- the lovable, unique staff set the tone for the inclusive atmosphere, the art shows, the fantastic local music, the lunchtime menu, and the sun streaming through the giant windows .... the name of the bar, the bar is called heaven, or, An Beal Bocht Cafe!

Yelp
The Jeremy Bar-Ilan Band performance brought my family to this Riverdale, Bronx cafe. You can really get a feel for the venue atmosphere if you go to UTUBE and watch the clips of the performances from this night. Look up January 19, 2019 Jeremy Bar-Ilan Band at An Beal Bocht Cafe. This local restaurant, cafe, pub, sports bar, music venue is unique in my eyes. At the same time it's typical. Music variety and schedule is posted on their website. They serve food that looks delicious. Our party didn't eat. The band performed 9pm so we ate before we went. Hats off to the service staff that maneuvered the small space between the bar and the band. Yes it's a small dim lighting type venue. The crowd consisted of fans of the band and the cafe regulars. People come to drink, eat, socialize and enjoy the music. I believe if you live in the neighborhood or want to feel a city vibe you will have fun. I would like to eat here in the future. I doubt I will have the opportunity unless I'm invited to a band performance in the future. I'm giving it four stars just because, that's my gut feeling. It's a good time. You judge for yourself......

Yelp
Authentic Irish comfort food and experience when you come to An Beal Bocht. This bar (or statement of the neighborhood) serves wonderful food and drinks. They have indoor and outdoor seating. They often have live music as well. I recommend the Irish breakfast, bangers and mash, and shepard's pie.

Kadeem J.

Yelp
One of my favorites places in Riverdale. Big thanks to Ryan and Cass for always going the extra step to show they care. great hospitality and there brunch is the best kept secret in Riverdale.

Yelp
An beal bocht is such a cool chill spot for brunch. I had the huevos rancheros and hubby had the farm breakfast with a side if irish bacon. Very good, both were tasty and the service was excellent.

Yelp
I've been coming here for nearly ten years, and it has become a second home with a second family. It's the perfect combination of food, drinks, people, and music to keep you coming and then hanging out all night. Over the years we've also become close with many of the staff - Bronagh, Keely, and Caitlin to name a few - who are some of the most wonderful, warm and welcoming people you'll ever meet. I just can't recommend this place enough.
google avatar

Haley M.

Yelp
This is my favorite neighborhood joint. My everyday go to for a ice cold beer and authentic Irish atmosphere. Feeling more of a brunch atmosphere? Go! With every brunch entree, a free mimosa or Bloody Mary comes along. I highly suggest any Irish dish, especially the traditional Irish breakfast.

Adrienne F.

Yelp
Nice outdoor seating! Standard Irish pub type place. Quiet midday, enjoyed a long lunch here
google avatar

Sally S.

Yelp
This place is authentic... came back after not being here for a while. Was in the 'hood. Besides having that Irish authenticity- including the warm people who come here... the chicken curry with basmati rice really hit the spot on a cold February day. Not just pub fare. Long Live An Beal Bocht. It's an oasis.

Yelp
This place feels like an institution, although it seems like it's in the middle of nowhere. Lots of students and professors. The girls next to us kept talking about Jascha Heifetz, and I really wanted to jump in with a loving comment until I remembered just how long ago it was that I was going through my own Heifetz obsession. Although as a matter of fact I did listen to his Bruch Scottish Fantasy at least two dozen times a couple weeks ago. But how exactly does one bring that up while trying to act naturally. In a place like this, where the feeling of familial conviviality pervades, it probably wouldn't have been an issue, but still. Anyhow, I've been meaning to come here forever, and am glad I finally did. USEFUL TIP, you seat yourself. USEFUL TIP, don't be afraid to go chase someone down to get what you want, they're always falling behind and, it's very crowded. UEFUL TIP, although not exactly cheap, if you need to get out of the house and go somewhere unique, I highly recommend having a few beers with friends. USEFUL TIP, the food is okay, but expensive, I'd eat elsewhere...

Yelp
If you havent been to this spot, you're missing a true gem in the Bronx. I played a gig here and the staff was incredible, the patrons were awesome, and the vibe was perfect. On top of that, the food was so good. Tries the wings, bruschetta and a quesadilla. These bar nibbles were so good and so fresh. Please go here at any time and you wont regret it.
google avatar

Shannon E.

Yelp
Very yummy. Went to this place in my first night after moving. Well priced and the Gaelic burger was very good! Highly recommend. The Irish bacon is very tasty as well!

Katie R.

Yelp
Okay, maybe I've been taking this place for granted for 7+ years and didn't realize it. But it's hard to ignore during pandemic times when they: - have leg-level heating seating areas outside, which means MUCH warmer booths than bars with ceiling-level heating units (heat rises ya know, so science wins here) - actually check vaccination status for indoor customers -fill their wine glasses to the brim - have the best Guinness pour in NYC - have live music more nights than they don't -have bar staff who'll chase you into the convenience store across the street bc you forgot your beanie and it's cold out I'd live here if I could, but I can't, so I live a block away and love it. Brave the stairs for it - you'll earn the beer on the way, and have a story for the way home.

Yelp
Imagine a pub with music, art exhibits, theatre, great food/ staff and the best cutomers/ supporters N.Y.C. and you have the Beal..no t.v.s to be found. Viva the arts..Viva the people

Yelp
3 stars for the friendly staff but ZERO stars for the food. We went on Dy. Patty's Day. There weren't enough servers so service was slow, food was poor, BUT the beer was good.
google avatar

Evan R.

Yelp
I walked into this place for the first time tonight and enjoyed a nice drink while listening to music. I was looking forward to coming back until the bar tender decided to never come back with change when I gave her a $50. She then accused me of leaving the table but I was sitting down, working on my IPad the whole time. Please fire this bartender immediately and pay me at least $100 for this horrible experience.
google avatar

Yelp
All I can say is everything is amazing! I had the fish and chips and it was crispy and not greasy. the beer was cold the food was hot! and the music amazing.. cant go wrong!

Mary-Beth S.

Yelp
The Poor Mouth. Relaxed atmosphere, good food and beer, live music and theater. I wish it were closer to me in the Bronx, although I'd be there all the time if it were.

Jesse A.

Yelp
Absolute gem of a neighborhood institution, with good food great drinks sweet staff live music / theater and outside seating. What's not to like?

Steve C.

Yelp
Nice ambience on a misty day, good service, decent food. Nicest touch is the live music.

Yelp
The service was excellent. The employees treat you with respect and give you a warm welcome.

Yelp
When happiness is contagious Bright smiles Comes from within To be enchanted Where it is noticeable by others For my poetry writing is voiced and acknowledged In the merriment of fellow poets, writers and emerging musicians When happiness is contagious Where the demise and disrespect are none Only dreams of what may possibly become For I am not in a state of despair I'm still ALIVE!! When happiness is contagious For I've learned not to depend on others to make me happy Where my happiness initiate from me Laughter induces levity Smiles enlighten my inner spirit That the sun is shining through My love light is glowing That I'm free as a bird To conquer new adventures As life is short to be unhappy My poetic travels has disembark a noteworthy stop to An Beal Boucht on a Wednesday night for an open-mike. With my good sincere, respectful poetic friends of writers I was having the time of my life where enhanced by good food and somewhat good selections of drinks. Space encompasses good acoustics and a clear audible microphone with an attentive audience of appreciative interest makes a world of difference to performers like myself. An Irish pub where the upper level of An Beal Bocht Cafe was detached from the bar and only accessible from the second entrance outside. Under the bar contains hooks for personal belongings to hold a place without touching the floor. An Beal Bocht Cafe is accessiby via #1 train to 238th Street and walk up the steps or the Bx7 bus to 238th Street. Angry Buffalo wings are hell spawn hot which are not for the faint weak tongue. Our pizza was the unfortunate burnt. Service is somewhat attentive yet courteous and friendly with a smile. My burger was dried but two glasses of Pinot Noir enticed me to be just me. The week's lineup of live entertainment and events is surely no shortage for an abundancy of merriment. Wednesday night for an open-mike poetry performance in DA BRONX expels all poison of the demise and dismissive fools!

Yelp
seisiúns at 4pm Sundays and into the night Tough parking situation but was lucky. Music was great Craic! #GuinnessPints were perfect. Community tables and made new friends from #TheBronx, #Jaspers, #FordhamRamily #pubfood was good, staff attentive. Bathrooms at each level. Wish there were hearths burning peat. Fun activities of literature, theatre and music.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, welcoming and a cool location right near the college. The waitstaff is nice and they're accommodating. I showed up with a VERY large, unannounced group after an event at the college. They didn't hesitate to make it work and get us all served in a hot a minute. I'll definitely be frequenting more often. I only had drinks, can't wait to see what's on the menu.

Yelp
Simple good food with veggie options. Quirky interesting place in the north Bronx. Come for show. Eat a good meal. Linger over a pint. Neighborhood feel.

Yelp
Went to see our friend Maeve Price perform in " The Donohue Sisters" and have a Guinness and dinner. Very cool bar / restaurant / adjoining theater space - small, fun, cool, eclectic. Had a avocado sandwich with salad. Lovely!

Yelp
The perfect place to drink an Irish car bomb or Black and Tan on St. Patrick's Day, or any other day for that matter. Bonus points for having Smithwicks on the beer menu. Ambiance is wonderful. Love the painted missus so busy stirring her cauldron she's got her fanny facing outward. The signage exhorting goat owners that they cannot keep their goats on property after having received said notice, really caught my eye, as did the license plate that expounds a hearty "Pog Mo Thoin"- ha! Cozy and comfortable, they serve a mean corned beef and cabbage. The accompanying boiled potatoes and soda bread were superlative. I'm so not a bread or potato kind of gal, so this is high praise. One star subtracted from what would be five star for the abysmal service. Lots of smart locals take to going behind the bar and serving themselves. Adding the menu as it's hard to come by, not being listed on the venue website: Breakfast Fresh scones, bagels, rolls and breads w/butter,jams, cream cheese, etc. Eggs with your choice of bacon, sausage, cheese, Irish beans, home fries. *Traditional Irish Breakfast - Eggs, sausage, Irish bacon, black & white pudding , home fries and beans served w/ brown bread. *Vegetarian Irish Breakfast - Eggs, Irish beans, tomatoes mushrooms and home fries served with brown bread. ALWAYS AVAILABLE Home made soups , sandwiches, assorted salads LUNCH AND DINNER An Beal Bocht Burger with your choice of toppings. Fresh Hot Pizza with your choice of toppings. Sausage Rolls w/beans and brown bread. Shepards Pie with salad Chicken Curry with rice and salad. Irish Stew with brown bread. * Irish Bacon, cabbage and potatoes served with salad. DESSERTS Rice Pudding w/ fresh cream Apple Pie w/ fresh cream Carrot Cake Assorted Irish Chocolates Coffee, Teas We also serve Irish , French and Mexican Coffees * Expresso, Cappucino and Iced Cappucino BEVERAGES Besides our "Perfect Pint" of Guinness, we proudly serve on tap: Harp , Bass , Woodpecker , Stella , Smithwicks, Brooklyn and the brew of the month. BOTTLED Bud ,Coors Light, Heineken, Amstel Light,Corona ,O'Douls plus the brews of the month.

Yelp
Until today I've only gone for drinks with friends and it was always a good time but this morning I checked out their brunch and it was amazing ! SO delicious & affordable . I had a vegetarian Irish breakfast , two eggs any style , potatoes , toast , roasted tomato and mushrooms, and a complimentary mimosa (or Bloody Mary )- $10!! This is my new breakfast spot ! Check them out ! You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
I've been putting off writing a review for An Beal for some time now, and for 2 reasons. 1) I want it to remain MY local bar and not yours. 2) I don't really know what to say. I'll put it as simply as I can. I love An Beal. Everything about it. The outdoor seating, the crazy pictures on the wall, the beer, the food, the tiny cramped bathrooms that you can hardly turn around in, the bartenders, the live music, the not-live music, the free wifi, the bartenders (yes, twice), the art "gallery" in the back, the copper bar, the dogs, the wooden floors, some of the crazy riverdalians, and, well, the bartenders (obviously my favorite part ...) I suppose I'll finally have to admit that I'm a regular now...
google avatar

Gabe F.

Yelp
Great place! Loved the atmosphere, it felt a little hipster-y but it was cool nonetheless. The food was awesome! I like the fact that they have so many beers available, and the prospect of live music in a chill environment, not far from home is always going to get bonus points from me! I particularly enjoyed the decor, it almost felt like you were in a time warp, looking at all the Irish regalia and history that lined the walls. I definitely feel this place is worth checking out, and look forward to going back soon! Try the bangers and mash!

Yelp
I was at Mr. McGoo's enjoying one of their many backyard venues, when I ran into this cat who suggested that I head over to An Beal Bocht Cafe if I really loved music. I do. I do. I really do. As soon as a stepped into this establishment the vibe of the place sank into my marrow. It could have had a lot to do with the croonings of Burning Spear on Keith's iPod. An Beal Bocht Cafe and I became fast friends. In the following..... sorry blanked out for a minute, Al Green just came on. Speaking of which, in the following weeks after this, I was awed by open mic talent in the neighborhood, treated to Blue Vision [pictured] and some fine Nawlands second line, and others nights lots of indy, folk, blues, and reggae. And as I list these genres, the names do little justice to the intensity with which the bands here play. I love intimate settings just for that. An Beal Bocht Cafe has been an institution in the Riverdale hood for 23 years according to Keith. It has expanded to two rooms. They put on a plethora of events. Okay the food. Excellent. Burger [pictured], I've had a few times. Definitely making my top 100 burgers in NYC list. The Shepard's Pie was suggested to me by a patron. Yeah, I could see why he orders it pretty much every time. The dessert is... sinful. I know a lot of people throw this word around, especially in advertising. This don't know what the heck they're talking about. When I say sinful, I mean the makers are thinking only of taste in the preparation. And from the first bite you must refrain yourself from ordering another plate prior to finishing the first. Then they throw in the occasional backyard barbeque to sweeten the pot. If I sound like I'm gushing. It's because I am. This place saved my experience here in the Bronx. Brooklyn, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and now the Boogie Down Bronx with a lot more boogie thanks to An Beal Bocht.
google avatar

Steve P.

Yelp
Ok. The beer selection is average at best. However, there is such a great mix of neighborhood folks here, and I love it. The bartenders are pretty damn good, and they treat people right while always being friendly. The only bad thing is the Manhattan College students who are a wretched group of entitled and dumb kids. In addition, ABB has some really good live music most nights of the week. The place is a bit small for it, but it's often pretty damn good. This place is a real Irish bar down to its Gaelic name.

Yelp
It's in the middle of nowhere Riverdale. I honestly don't think you can get here unless it's with a car. I suggest you find that car or that person that's gonna drive you there because this place is on point!! Happy hour (4-7PM) $4 well drinks $5 wines $3 beers on draft They have poetry Tuesday, open Mic night, comedians & bands. A creative, festive, genuine decoration theme and the Irish men are everywhere. Service is great, drinks not watered down. This is the kind of place you can adopt as your own. Come here and support!

Adrian G.

Yelp
Did I need the extra 67 drinks? Probably not- but did I drink them? Absolutely! What a gem, its almost like this place sucks you in my the tippy top of your soul and then spits you out a whole new man. I walked by the other day and just like a black hole- I just started getting sucked! Boom! I was in the bathroom! I mean the backroom. I play a small violin vertically like an upright bass, so I plan to bring that in to play at the open mic on Tuesdays. I hope they like it!

LISA N.

Yelp
When my cousins come and visit and say it's the best french toast we've ever had, it's a good sign. Came here for brunch, with a nice selection and a mimosa or bloody mary included. I ordered the Irish breakfast, and my cousins ordered one as well, with another order of french toast. The Irish breakfast came out first, and they totally forgot to put in the other order. We weren't in a rush or what not, so we mentioned it to them and they put it in afterwards. It was well worth the wait since the french toast was delicious. On top of that, they were super awesome! Not expecting to get the dessert we ordered on the house, they felt terrible we had to wait for our french toast. Super genuine and great service considering they were fairly busy with only a few workers on deck.
google avatar

Desirea R.

Yelp
No complaints, best bartenders ever, drinks are amazing! So well made. Food is on point. Bloody Mary is spool good here. Service is great. Workers are so friendly and attentive. Never considered price because everything is so good. Always worth the money we spent & we always leave a good tip! Excellent place

Frank M.

Yelp
Love this place. Wonderful selection of beers and Guiness. Love the hard ciders. Many friendly patrons. The food was surprisingly terrific. Burgers are mouthwateringly tasty and made to your order. Do not forget their Onion Rings. That is the best side order on the menu. Also terrific is their Chili. This place is one of the few jewels in this area.
google avatar

Jane L.

Yelp
Came here with three others to support a friend during their Tuesday Open Mic Night. Was really impressed by the quality of the performances. So many impressive musical performances. The food was also surprisingly good! The burger I got was superb. Everyone else liked the food they ordered too. A bit hard to get a drink at the bar but nice drink selection. Decent prices. I would totally come here more often if it wasn't so far away.

Nan M.

Yelp
Very nice neighborhood spot. Great burger. Nice people. Home made slaw. I'll be going back for sure.

Yelp
Come back Sunday morning for breakfast! They have a delicious Irish breakfast with eggs, potatoes, black & white pudding, rashers, beans and sausage. It's seasoned just right, and not too salty / greasy. This $12 brunch dish includes a mimosa with a very generous amount of champagne! In addition to the great food, the music playing at this time is nice and mellow, the perfect theme for a Sunday afternoon. Oh, and the waitresses are total sweethearts !
