Anak Baba

"Since 2018, this cosy little gem tucked inside the Little India has been serving authentic Southern Peranakan cuisine that melds Indo-Malay flavours with Chinese influences. The must-try nasi lemak with ayam goreng kunyit is the quintessential national comfort food – coconut milk lends a subtle sweetness to the rice, in stark contrast with the juicy fried chicken, fiery sambal and crisp water spinach." - Michelin Inspector

Unsure why rating only 4.0 here but here's my honest review about Anak Baba @ Brickfields. Location: Near to Nu Sentral by just 5-mins walking distance via the main entrance. A bit hidden because the restaurant is not facing the main road, but still easy to access through Google Maps. Food: In terms of variety, Anak Baba offers alot choices, such as Ayam Pongteh, Ayam Sekbak, Nyonya Curry, Udang Masak Nanas, Bendi Sambal, Tauhu Sumbat, Pai Tee, Ikan Goreng Gerang Asam, and not forgetting the signature Cendol Gula Melaka. Each dishes are authentic, although it's not as heavy-seasoned as in Malacca, but you can still taste the originality. Cendol Gula Melaka (shaved iced) is a must to order as an ending, not too sweet and the Gula melaka isn't the watery type. Service: The food serving speed is quick, unsure if we reached before lunch hour. Even we add on a few dishes during the peak hour, we can still get our dishes within 10 minutes after ordering. Price: Each dishes starting from MYR 10, and the portion ideally for maximum 2 persons per dish. I suggest to order more items if your group are more than 4 persons. For Cendol Gula Melaka, I ordered the Shaved Iced version that is MYR 9 per bowl, they have cubed ice version with lower price around MYR 7.50. Ambiance: Anak Baba has indoor and outdoor seatings. Indoor has 2 sides that is chill section, and another side with sunlight if you like to have more vitamin-E. Plenty seats that can accommodate single, 2 persons or large groups dining. In short, it's definitely a comeback for another round of bendi sambal, ikan gerang asam and ayam pongteh. I know you can find peranakan/baba nyonya cuisine inside the mall, but it's worth to walk here to enjoy the authentic Malacca peranakan cuisine.

Have been coming here since 2018. Menu changed over the years but the nyonya food has always been delicious. Prices are very reasonable here for most dishes. Have tried a variety of food on the menu. We really like the nasi lemak (sambal is not too spicy, anchovies crispy) and laksa nyonya melaka. Pai tee is a little on the pricy side, tasted alright. Nothing offensive on the menu so far. The restaurant is very tastefully decorated. But it’s more suited for smaller groups. We came in a big group the last time, had to order a variety of ala carte dishes to share… it was fun. The only real down side to this place is that parking is very challenging to find, very limited.

The place and ambience is great and feels cozy and homey. The food is rather so so, we ordered mi goreng, nasi lemak with chicken, and cendol gula melaka. the crispy chicken is good yet the nasi lemak and mi goreng nyonya lacks flavour, no umami taste..

Anak Baba hits the sweet spot for soulful Peranakan cooking. We started with tasty pie tee, soft and flavourful popiah, and stuffed tofu with peanut sauce—all great for sharing. Highlights from the mains included the comforting ayam ‘O’ (rice in savoury chicken broth), spicy-sour asam pedas fish, rich and fragrant nyonya laksa, and the bold, fiery sambal grilled fish. The mee Siam had a lovely tang, and the nasi lemak was a satisfying classic done right. For dessert, we enjoyed a trio of local favourites: creamy bubur cha cha, generous ais kacang, and a luscious cendol topped with thick gula melaka and coconut milk.

Ordered laksa nyonya, meesiam, Popiah. Popiah was the MVP !! Must order !!! Inside the shop was hot 🥵 2 aircon but 1 not functioning… service was slow also believe that they have not enough working. Only 1 worker taking order & cashier. Another 2 kitchen crew. We order 4 dishes, 2 dishes was come so late after we finish all the others.

They were awarded Michelin for 2024 and 2025. Service and ambience were good. Laksa and Mee Siam were just ok. Pie tee and popiah were below average. The skin of the popiah was too thick and lack of flavour.

This is an understated and rather unassuming restaurant in a quiet part of Brickfields. Food is generally good with a few exceptional items like their Nyonya Laksa. Dishes worth trying are the Pai Tee (top hats), Tauhu Sumbat ( stuffed tofu), fried chicken, sambal prawns and ladies finger with sambal.

Been to this restaurant few years back. Now they have Michelin award but I'm not too sure in term of what. Sis & I feel wanna get some icy dessert. I has suggest this place cos we try is before & good. As usual I order my pai tee which my sis dislike it.The taste remain. Coffee was ok. Cendol & ABC not what we expected. Taste not good. The ABC only had cendol & red bean inside. Both authentic dessert spoil- don't have coconut milk & Gula Melaka taste at all. Disappointed with it. Due to Pai Tee still good, I give 3 star for this comment.
