While I take no pleasure in writing a negative review, I feel it would be a disservice to future travelers to not. The Anantara Angkor in Siem Reap is marketed as a 5-star luxury hotel but, unfortunately, this is nowhere near accurate.
While most of the staff is lovely and you can tell they want to provide high end service, it misses the mark. Upon our arrival, we were told we were being given a “double upgrade” for our room as we are Titanium members. However, we were actually given the base level room (which could be found on the website as such). We did not appreciate the unnecessary lie. When we inquired, we were told the room was indeed an upgrade. Then, they offered to show us a “better room”, which appeared to be of the same quality but was slightly bigger, and it wouldn’t be ready for us until after 10:30pm (we arrived around 8pm). We were also expected to pay for said upgrade even though we were originally told we were being given the upgrade.
While the resort has potential, it needs serious upgrades. The rooms are dismal, with clearly damaged floors, tiles, and furniture. The bathroom finishes are so old they’re yellowed. The grout has visible discoloration and what appears to be mold in the shower. The bed sounded near collapse anytime we’d get into it. It looks as if the furniture has not been upgraded in at least 15 years. The rug was ripped and tattered and the chaise lounge had cigarette burns in it. I’ll also note that the bedside USB ports did not work.
The restaurant is OK, but for 5 stars, better quality food and overall ambiance should be expected. Most dishes lacked proper seasoning. The furniture also seems old and tattered.
An additional note, the public restrooms in the lobby and by the courtyard did not have hand soap. The options were hand sanitizer, body wash, and body lotion.
We have been fortunate enough to stay in 7+ Anantara resorts across Southeast Asia, so we are familiar with the expected quality. Unfortunately, Angkor does not stack up to its Anantara counterparts. If they advertised as a 4 star hotel, it would be more accurate and I wouldn’t feel the need to be as harsh in my critiques.
I’ll also note that the staff were well aware that we were unsatisfied and while some did check on us throughout the stay, the GM never did despite his presence on the night of our arrival and when we left. This could be explained away, but it felt odd regardless.
On a positive note, the restaurant waiters are so friendly and personable. We appreciated their recommendations and attentiveness.
