My Favorite Spy Stories Are Set in Europe, so I Planned an Espionage-themed Trip Across the Continent

"A grand, Belle Époque palace-style hotel in Budapest that has frequently stood in for other Eastern European locales in spy films; the author checked in, extended their stay twice, and appreciated its cinematic aura, including its role as the setting for a scene in which one character trains another in tradecraft." - Chris Wallace Chris Wallace Chris Wallace is a New York-based writer and photographer. He recently published his first book, "Twentieth-Century Man," about the late artist Peter Beard. His work has been featured in The New York Times, The Financial Times, and other publications. A Summer Wellness Getaway in Budapest's Storied Baths

"Skin-softening Lake Hévíz mud is also the star of a signature offering at the Anantara New York Palace Budapest Hotel’s cocooning underground spa; in this rendition, it's applied to the back and paired with a milky lavender foot bath, sea salt and olive oil scrub, and a coconut oil body massage."

Anantara New York Palace Budapest (Budapest, Hungary) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"It’s been well over a century since Budapest’s New York Café first opened its doors in 1894 — the day renowned Hungarian writer Ferenc Molnár allegedly seized the keys and tossed them into the Danube, ensuring the café would never close. Situated on the ground floor of an ornate palace just off the Grand Boulevard, the beautifully restored café remains the crown jewel of the Anantara New York Palace Budapest. With its original frescoes, Venetian chandeliers, and gilded details, the space exudes old-world charm. Soaring ceilings, sixteen grand windows, and twisting columns adorned with golden stucco make it a true architectural masterpiece. Among whimsical sculptures of devilish fauns and "El Asmodai"—an ancient symbol of coffee and meditation—the café's signature 24-carat gold New York cappuccino awaits to be savored." - Tablet Hotels

Where to Stay in Budapest (Updated 2025)

"A lavish five-star property with an opulent palatial lobby, Anantara NY Palace stood out for its indoor pool, sauna, steam bath, large fitness center, and a cocktail bar with live piano where I enjoyed great drinks; the rooms are huge with super comfy beds, desks, sofas, minibars, and beautiful, massive-tub bathrooms." - Matthew Kepnes

The 6 Best Hotels in Budapest in 2025

"With an opulent interior and a palatial lobby featuring massive ornate pillars and a lofty ceiling, this immensely lavish five-star hotel feels like a Versailles-style retreat. The property has an indoor pool, sauna, steam bath, and a large fitness center, and I especially love the historic 20th-century café—an extraordinary coffee house where guests can enjoy an expansive breakfast spread before it opens to the public. There’s also an elegant bar with live piano music and excellent drinks. Rooms are huge and airy with dark, sleek décor, super comfy beds, desks and sofas, minibars, and flatscreen TVs, while bathrooms are large with gorgeous tiles, marble, massive bathtubs, and separate walk-in showers; you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more luxurious hotel in the city." - Matthew Kepnes

As an extension of our Uniworld River Cruise, we stayed in this amazing hotel. It is absolutely beautiful, elegant, and luxurious. The entire staff was attentive, and went above and beyond to be of assistance. A very special thank you to Concierge Bella Jennifer Dani, who answered my countless emails regarding our trip before we arrived in Budapest. Our room was beautiful, spacious, and very comfortable. The amenities were spectacular. We had dinner at the White Salon which was delicious, as was breakfast, and lunch at the New York Cafe.

Stayed here for 2 nights as part of Viking Cruises extension, wow what a beautiful hotel, our room was so lovely, huge comfy bed, large clean bathroom and plenty of bottled water available. Air conditioning very poor though. Breakfast was good, although hot food was pretty much cold, the hot plates do not keep the food hot? Plenty of other choices though pastries, bread, cold meats, cereals etc. The spa area is very luxurious and we enjoyed a swim and a sauna. Had a very comfortable stay.

Avoid if you expect luxury, as returning guests we can confirm the standard at this hotel have disappeared. ||Disappointing from start to finish, just to a highlight a small number of issues we had:||Arrived at advertised check-in time (3pm) but our room wasn’t ready until 3:40. No apology, no offer of a drink, and when we sat down for 20 minutes, no one bothered to take an order. This is systemic as other guests were treated the exact same way.|Housekeeping is chaotic: inconsistent cleaning, one day not done at all, another day a cleaner barged in without knocking and told us to check out (she had the wrong room). Even asking for fresh sheets didn’t work — the request card was simply placed back where it came from and the sheets remained dirty- our stay was for 5 nights. |Food & drink: regularly cold. Pancakes at breakfast, £10 cup of tea ordered to the room and pasta from room service — all served cold. One night we tried for an hour to order from their “24-hour room service” but no one ever answered the phone. Another time it took 1h20 and three requests just to get mugs that hadn't been replaced during inconsistent cleaning.|For a hotel claiming to be “Leading Hotels of the World,” this was shambolic. Inconsistent, inattentive service and a total lack of polish. We left genuinely amazed this property carries that badge, and were very sad because we returned after loving it so much the first time. If your thinking of returning here as you enjoyed a trip in the past please please spend your hard earned money somewhere else and avoid disappointment.

The hotel is an architectural and design tour de force, beautifully showcasing its belle epoque origins. ||Our room was spacious, comfortable, and very well placed near the center of the hotel overlooking the main avenue… but very well sound insulated.||Most important, hotel personnel were attentive and professional across the board. Attribute to staff as well as management. ||The landmark building first caught my attention in the late 1980s when the interior was just a ghost of its once opulent self. The opulence is back in full style!

The most unforgettable 5-star hotel I've ever been to was absolutely amazing. From the bellhop to the front desk receptionist Gergo was professional and polite. He even let us check in early, which we really appreciated. Every detail surprised me from the moment I walked in, when the lifts took us up, it was yet another wow moment. The hotel’s service was top-notch, truly the best! The server at the white salon a young desk receptionist, he is so gentleman, and our table server’s Domokos, he was super kind and took a ton of great photos and videos, which really added to our experience and made us smile :) The room was incredibly stunning and spotless, and the selection of teas was such a treat. I will definitely 💯 be coming back soon!

Just had fantastic lunch at White Salon. Our server was András - he did everything to please all our cravings. He really made our day lovely. The food was great but without such a great service it would not taste that good. Thank you!

Thank you to Richard for providing the ONLY good service we had in Hungary. We only stayed a night before we headed to my home town but everything was 5*. We will be back for sure and please give this guy a raise and promotion. He was the only server we didn’t have to waive down and was informative and helpful during our breakfast. This is what international guests expects! Rooms were spacious and we had everything we needed. The receptionists were also nice and the little welcome lemonade was a nice touch!
